I was at square burger today with my boss and some partners for a lunch meeting, I ordered a burger made as a salad due to a gluten sensitivity. There was a bunch rotten greens slimy mush, the "burger" to salad ratio was absolutely insane. The mountain of greens and lack of literally anything else was shocking. I'm not a huge burger fan, but Square Burger is a staple in Downtown McKinney and I wanted to give it a shot. We went there on a Saturday, didn't know it was the same day as the Arts Fest so parking was kind of tricky. The wait wasn't that bad, surprisingly, about 45 min for a table of 5. There are about 6 burger options on the menu, they all sounded equally delish, but I opted for the most basic burger they have (the first one on the menu) with lettuce, tomato, pepperjack cheese, and pickles. The burger was definitely good, but I think there are better burgers out there. We ordered regular fries, onion rings, and sweet potato fries for the table. While they all tasted good, they were a bit too stringy for me. The onion rings are cut so thin and stringy that it's even difficult to grab with a fork. I will say that they have a great beer selection on tap. Lots of unique and LOCAL beers to choose from, which I always love. The service was great, the prices are right, and the food was good. I won't be running back (again, b/c I'm not a burger fan) but I wouldn't be opposed to trying other things on the menu in the near future. read more

Wow! Really awesome burger. That's saying something as I love burger joints. I've had a few. Ate here Saturday July 28th, 2018 around 5:30 pm. Got a table quick even though place was full. Our waiter was super quick and very helpful for these newbies. I ordered the BBQ cheddar burger and it was juicy and good with sliver onion rings, lettuce, tomato and BBQ sauce on a large bun. Wife had the Smoke Jack burger and loved it too. We devoured these burgers. They didn't stand a chance against us. We also had the sweet potato fries. Holy Crap, them's was gooooood! Walking around old town McKinney first time visit to the state of Texas. Decided to stop by at this burger place, saw a lot of patrons in there and thought must be good because they were busy. I purchase the Lamb burger and was not disappointed. Ground lamb meat perfectly seasoned with all the Greek fixings one could ask for including tzatziki, feta cheese, red onion, tomato, lettuce on an amazing ciabatta bun. Their french fries were homemade skin-on and their onion rings were made with tempura batter and amazing. This restaurant is located in an amazing area (McKinney square). Overall, it is a genuinely really good burger. I got the square burger with sweet potato fries which were wonderful. Everything was very reasonably priced, and it seemed like they had a very good draft beer selection. Our go to burger place! Nice thick burgers cooked to perfection. The Smokey Jack Burger is my favorite. My husband sticks with the Square Burger with lettuce and tomato (he skips the onion and asks for swiss cheese). He also always orders onion rings which he inhales! We love to sit outside so we can bring our dog. They treat her like a princess: a dish with ice water arrives immediately and we always order her a small beef patty. I will say they serve an amazing burger and thin onion fries. The service however was really poor. The servers themselves are so sweet, but they are being ran ALL over the place with, what it seems, no direction. You are allowed to sit anywhere you like, so you have to run for a table. Then the servers don't seem to have designated areas to serve so you are waiting a long time to order, for your food, and the check out. We were there for a total of 1 hour and 40 mins, the majority just waiting for someone to take our order. I would hope they would change the system and have a hostess to seat you and servers more organized. I felt so bad for the workers. We ordered some spicy crunchy wings, which were quite crunchy and paired well with the dip. Came with about 8 wings or so. Also ordered the full size of onion rings and sweet potato fries. The fries were shoestring and perfectly crisp with the right amount of salt. The onion rings were huge, to the point that they had to be cut in half to actually dip. They could have used more seasoning, but were crunchy nonetheless. Ordered a simple green salad and a Caesar salad, both of which were tasty. The lemon herb vinaigrette was perfect for the green salad. Lastly, we ordered the smoky jack burger which was cooked well, had the right flavor and the bacon was crispy. Very big burger and came with onion strings and a fried pickle, which was delicious. Portions were appropriate and the prices seemed reasonable. This place has a full bar with a lot of craft beers on tap to try. If you're looking for a good burger or some tasty desserts (they all looked so good walking by!), then stop in, grab a drink and you won't be disappointed. read more

We've come here twice now and enjoyed the food. We've had the lamb burger, bison burger but my favorite is the fish and chips. The fish and chips aren't on the actual menu, but it's written up on the chalkboard so if you see it, get it! The fish melts in your mouth and it's the perfect amount of crunch. One thing that could be better is the service. Everyone here is nice, but we've seen a lot of delay in getting refills on water and removing dirty plates (even when it's not busy). read more

Haven't given out a 5 star in a while. I reserve this for places that I'll not forget for a long time. This place does gourmet burgers right. They deserve to be called a gastropub. No wait on a wednesday at 5pm. Simple modern decor. Mostly whites, pastels, comfy seating at booths and tables in the middle. Bar in the corner with chalkboard of drinks behind it. Waiter got to us quickly, took our order, recommended his choices, and he was off. The prices were not cheap, but after tasting what they had to offer, I will say I'll be back again (if only to impress my girlfriend or someone else). Waiter brought out burgers and proceeded to explain what we ordered and how it was prepared at the side of our table. I think that part stuck out the most to me for 2 reasons: 1. Believe or not most of the time between you ordering and the food coming out at most places is enough time for you to forget what the heck you ordered exactly. 2. explaining how the food you're about to eat was prepared and with what exact ingredients adds so much charm and experience to your dining that it's memorable. The food. Wow. Just wow. I kid you not there were flavors in there that I have never tasted in my life. The meat was cooked through but still slightly rare which was great. Bleu burger: The onion marmalade on the bleu cheese burger was bitter and sweet at the same time, adding a perfect compliment to the bleu cheese. The arugula allowing you to get a burst of fresh veggie. Parmigiana burger: basil garlic sauce added a kick to an otherwise relatively flavorless patty. Olive oil with paremesan cheese added a rich creamy bitterness. Smoked mozz left you with a gooey feeling to balance out the crisp arugula. Hands down one of the best if not the best burgers I've ever had. Everything including the sweet potato fries were served with an aioli sauce. Fries were enough for 2 people to share especially with how big the burgers were. Definitely recommended if you're looking for a bomb burger in far North Dallas! read more

The 'fried apple pies' were a complete rip off - extremely greasy - I couldn't eat even eat one - and there was pie filling dumped on top of them - what?!? I almost felt as though I needed to go back outside and verify the name of the place!!! My Buddy ordered the tuna 'burger' it was burned!!! My bacon-cheese burger had 'bits' of bacon on it... My friends and I came here about a month ago and 30 minutes before closing time, and the staff was visibly annoyed when we arrived. We ordered as soon as we could and got our food 10 minutes before closing time. We started eating and the food was really good! We were super hungry so ate as fast as we could as well. My friend had asked for a drink while we started eating and the waiter came back and slammed the drink on the table. We already felt bad for coming late, and so we tried to scarf our food down as they were winding down for the day. As we were finishing up eating and in the process of paying, they started playing songs like "Closing Time", which we laughed it off because we understood they didn't want us to be there. But then, the music got more and more aggressive with "Hit the Road Jack" and some heavy metal rock song saying to get out. Decent meal, exceptional and friendly staff, and nice location but the lack of signage and dirty tables are a turn off. It took us a good minute to figure out where Square Burger was because they don't have large signage out front like all of the other shops and restaurants do. The only thing that lets you know you're there is the small font on their door -- maybe it's different if you enter from the Virginia side instead of Tennessee. The cleanliness could be better. Our table had cup rings on the surface and we saw some gnats buzzing on the inside of the window as well as an ant crawling up the sill. By no means do these cry "this place is filthy, don't eat here" but it is unsightly and left me feeling itchy. Nonetheless, I enjoyed the house salad but my favorite part was the side of sweet potatoes I ordered. Top 5 for sure. I asked the waiter if he knew what they used to season the burger but he was not interested in helping me find out. I have tasted a very similar seasoning once before at a different burger place that was run by middle eastern people (I think) so I am not sure if this is a similar situation where they use a seasoning I don't care for. read more

Worst restaurant experience I have had in years! Sat down with my family only to have to wait for 30 minutes to even be acknowledged. Meanwhile every table around us was waited on and served. Watched as the hostess had to argue with the servers as to who was going to take our table. Took 50 minutes to get an ice tea, a lemonade, and a beer. Food finally came and my order was wrong. The waited another few minutes to see if my kids food would arrive, only to watch another table next to ours being promptly served. Contacted the manager who promptly gave the bail out excuse that it was busy and they had been negatively affected by Covid. Give me a break! This place has been on my burger radar for some time, finally made the trip. Yep, we waited, but not long, maybe ten minutes and the place was packed. No intimate conversations here, its a loud place. Mushroom border and turkey burgers with fries/onion string combo. Bottom line, well worth the trip. Mushroom burger was a home run, all the flavors shined. The meat was perfect, great beefy taste and texture. If sauteed onions were added, it would be a grand slam. Turkey was good, very dense, really needed additional spice and/or toppings, skewed to bland side. Both fries and onion strings were great. Fries had nice crunch with just right amount of salt.
