Stopped by Sputnik late on a weekday for some grub and a couple of beers. I'm not trendy enough to really be at Sputnik, but the staff didn't notice, because they were friendly. I went for the falafel, which was surprisingly unique, and with a chewy yet toasted pita sandwich. Some kind of unique hot and creamy sauce was added to the falafel balls, giving them a kick. My friend went for a cuban pork, also delicious. Plus Sputnik has a decent beer selection, comfy booths, and customers have awesome tattoos to look at. read more

Oh for the love of hipsters! This place is a hipster mecca, but don't take that the wrong way. Sputnik has awesome food, good beer choices and amazing people watching. I mean, where else can you enjoy a tofu bahn mi with sweet potato fries and sriracha ranch, drinking a good local beer while watching a caped man knit at the bar? Nowhere else. That's right. So many "interesting" folks stumble in here, so it makes for some great dining entertainment. I've been here for night food and for brunch and have never had a bad meal. The bahn mi is great, as are the chilaquiles. I liked their noodle bowl, too--although I think this changes seasonally. So grab a booth or a stool and get ready. Ordered the Brussels sprouts as a starter, then the roasted vegetables and butternut squash curry for a main. The curry came first. The bowl was entirely rice with 4 pieces of butternut squash and a handful of beans. The Brussels sprouts didn't make it until I asked about them. After reading all these reviews, I was all set to HATE Sputnik. My almost-hipster BFF wanted to start a Broadway bar tour here, and I'm always game to check out new places so I grudgingly agreed to meet here. It's definitely hipster heaven, but not as obnoxious as I expected. Everyone kind of kept to themselves and we got there early enough on a Saturday night (7:30) to snag a comfy booth. Our service was much better than I expected! Our server was on top of it, even after more people started filtering in. I hadn't eaten dinner before we went but everyone else in my group had, so I split some (white) fries with pork green chile with my BFF. These were GOOD fries. Hot, salty matchsticks of potato perfection. I like skinny, crispy fries and these fit the bill. YUM. The portion was HUGE and I was stuffed even though I hadn't had anything to eat since noon. My drinks were average-priced but not as strong as average. After 2 little vodka tonics and a double, I was not-drunk enough to demand shots at the next two bars and I'm a little bit of a lightweight when it comes to liquor. Boo. I'd actually give Sputnik 3.5 stars but since it's not quite my scene and I can't see myself spending a significant amount of time here, I rounded down. I'll be honest, I went to Sputnik the first few times to get ideas for a "hipster-themed bar crawl" and stare in amusement at the more interesting members of the crowd (they must win the "Most mullets in Denver award). As circumstances have brought me back again and again, I can't help but find myself liking the place. My review is likely biased because I am neither a hipster nor have I ever pretended to be. It's dumb luck that I bought in Baker right on the cusp of "Sobo", but I digress. The basket of sweet potato fries was so HUGE that it would take 4 sober people or 2 very drunk people to finish. But man, were those fries tasty. The fries were perfectly crisp, and the perfect balance of sweet and savory; they tasted great with the vegan creamy garlic dip and banana ketchup (do not be so tragically unhip as to ask for/use regular catchup here). I also sampled the macaroni(good, but nothing to write home about) and a corn dog (not sure how much one can say about the quality of a corn dog as they are essentially exactly the same everywhere).Though I will award bonus points to a place that is not a carnival that offers corn dogs when I am trying to cheat on my diet:) The service was average but nothing special. And, I might be willing to raise my rating a star (or at least a half) if the place weren't so loud and so dark. But, hey, it is a bar after all... read more

Sputnik is a great place to grab a beer and some grub in the late evening or to hit up on the weekend for some tasty brunch and bottomless mimosas. Being veggie/vegan is super easy here - which always earns points in my book, try the Tofu Banh Mi for lunch. Make sure to get some sweet potato fries and sample many of the accompanying delicious sauces like sriracha ranch or the banana ketchup for something sweeter. The RTD Route 0 South drops you off right at the front door. How cool is that? Timing is everything when it comes to Sputnik but I am for sure a fan of this place. Sometimes it gets very crowded which can be a bit of a turn off but over all it's a great place to do some drinking, some eating, some people watching, and some general South Broadway types of things. I've come here a number of times and there are always some interesting people around. During the day it's the "Hangover and in need of the hair of the dog" crowd and at night it's the "Let's party so much I need hair of the dog tomorrow" crowd. Service here is more times than none right on the money. You never have to wait very long for a drink or food. The brunch here is great. Lots of options to help cure the night before. They also have carafes of mimosa for like $8 which is a steal of a deal. Get your Bloody Mary game face on cuz they don't mess around in the day time. I like that there are options for munchies, even late at night. It's a real laid back vibe and I like that there are booths, tables, high tops, or just room to stand around. What I really like is that they rotate the wall art and there is always something new and exciting to look at. The lights are turned on low and there's a real cool atmosphere. It's a hip place to be and a lot of fun for the drinking crowd. I don't think I ever refuse and invite for Sputnik. read more

Went here for the first time with my dad for dinner cute little small place playing music . They have a brunch menu and a later eats menu. Vegan options as well as Meat options and friendly servers . If you plan to come here for brunch on the weekend, try to get there before, oh let's say, 10:30 AM. The joint was full by 11:00 AM including the bar and table/booth seating. The waitress wasn't rude but wasn't friendly either. She seemed very busy and the wait staff seemed undermanned. The service suffered a little from the ratio of wait staff to patrons. We basically saw our server to take our order, bring our drink/food orders, and then to deliver the check at the end. We ended up paying with cash since we didn't know how long a credit card would have taken. Now for the food... I mean, I love me some hash! Who doesn't love their favorite breakfast foods all chopped up and served together? (Hash comes from the French word hacher meaning "to chop". The more you know. Insert star with a rainbow trail here.) The chorizo was tasty. It's spicy and well seasoned. There were very large pieces of what looked to be kale that were tough to cut through with the butterknives you get. The menu should really say french fries instead of potatoes. I was hoping for home fries, hash browns, or some other breakfast potato that wouldn't get soggy under all the cheese. The two stars are for the food itself. The service, atmosphere including the loud music making it difficult to talk to others across the table, and overall vibe scored zero stars. I was expecting some bored eye rolls from behind horn rimmed glasses, but our server was not a complete douche. Definitely not stellar service, but not awful either and she warmed up as the afternoon continued. First she informed our table that only brunch was being served (on a Saturday at 11:30) and no lunch items could be ordered until 3. I was kind of annoyed since I wanted to try the mac n cheese and sweet potato fries, but the savory brunch options ended up working out well. I had the chorizo hash with a fried egg on top and it was quite tasty, although a bit heavy on the salt. I stole a few bites of the breakfast enchiladas and those were yummy. The $6 carafes of mimosas are a great deal to share, but super light on the booze. I drank 4 champagne flutes worth and didn't feel a buzz. The bloodys also tasted pretty watered down, so maybe beer is the way to go here. I don't frequent the neighborhood very often, but I would try this place again for happy hour. read more

Very interesting crowd, pretty awesome decor, and who knew they actually served food!? I ordered the bibimbap, and it was pretty decent. They had a DJ playing some great music, but most people were sitting at the bar having drinks. I had previously been to Sputnik late night. I came to visit Denver for the holidays and continued to find wonderful places. This place was no exception. Maybe I'm used to the sticker shock on drinks in San Francisco, but the nice selection of drinks and the their corresponding price tags were refreshing. I strongly recommend the bloody mary. Holy heck, I've been craving it since and it's been over a month now. Ok, in honesty, I didn't taste or feel much alcohol -- but even as a delicious spicy beverage (or cold soup) it's pretty awesome it's worth it. While we were hanging out, squashed into a booth -- we took turns taking goofy photos in the photo booth, photo bombing each other and unsuspecting victims. Everyone was friendly -- but I'm pretty sure Denver is just full of friendly people. In a semi-surreal experience -- about 10 people in Santa/elves costumes came in all quite, well, jolly. As we suspected it was a Santacon/Santarchy event (although they told us they got off work from the mall). It wasn't huge like the ones I've seen at other cities -- but I think that's what made it even better. On particularly nice Santa lent me her sequined hat. Hee hee! Ho Ho! OH, their sweet potato fries were great too! Better than most restaurants easily. The grilled cheese sandwich was wonderful -- buttery, cheesy, toasty deliciousness. I did get pretty crowded as the night went on -- but man, have I mentioned how nice Denverians... Denverites? Denverese are?? Even the hipsters don't seem stuck up -- but this might have been through my clouded vacation goggles and brain-freeze shock from all that cold white stuff from the sky. read more

There is something sinfully delicious about this place. Is it the dimly-lit atmosphere with funky lighting? Or the awesome music they've always got going? The amazingly delicious and naughty "diner-esque" food that they make with their own personal touch? The assortment of lip-smackingly good beers? Somehow we always get lucky and get the booth in the far back. Still a great enough angle to people watch from, which Sputnik is wonderful for. The service is also pretty good. They aren't always the fastest to come right over after you've sat down, but once they do, they are on top of their sh*t. Everyone we've had wait on us has been great, helpful and definitely had a sense of humor. Ok, now the food. The fries - omg. I always get a basket for myself. What?? They're THAT good! And take advantage of the many different sauces you can try. My favourites are the vegan ranch, creamy garlic(v) and the Berbere ketchyp(v). I've also had the: Stacks of Vegan Power - licked my fingers when I was done. Jackfruit Tacos - several different occasions and they were amazing every single time, with just the right amount of spiciness! The Cubano (v) - my husband ordered this and I tried it. It's really tasty as well and I may have to get on my own! And if this review still hasn't quite convinced you to check out Sputnik yet, we've brought friends of ours here who are some of the pickiest eaters I've ever met and they have LOVED everything they've tried (fries, breakfast burrito, hand-dipped corn dog, hush puppies and grilled cheese). The server was nice but not attentive and the food took forever to come out. Walked in and found a seat though on a Sunday right away, no wait. You have to check this place out if you're ever on Broadway. If you're looking for a relaxed yet edgy/hipster, come as you are, kind of vibe, this place is it! The restaurant is rather small and dimly lit kind of like a bar. Sputnik has a wide variety of vegan, or vegan-option, meals on their menu as well as a fully stocked bar. I don't drink, so I can't attest to the drinks, but I have heard good things about the drink menu, but the falafel wrap, soul bowl, and tacos are DELICIOUS! There is always loud music playing from all kinds of artists which makes the atmosphere fun and energetic. I have always had great service from the waiters and waitresses. They remembered my face after only 2 visits. The whole family has stopped in on a few occasions. I wouldn't bring kids in the evening though. Even my kids loved the food. I have even stopped in a couple times to sit in the window seats, people watch, and enjoy a happy hour serving of fries. I have to admit, this place isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea. I brought my bothers when they visited from out of state. The atmosphere was too different from what they were used to, so it made them feel uncomfortable. read more

I live on this block, so I frequent Sputnik about every other weekend. I haven't really eaten much here, just mostly drinks! But they have a cool bar that lights up at night, yummy hot chocolate and a full espresso bar. Vegan options, pickle vodka, habanero tequila, and ginger liquor marinating at all times. If you order fries, get the handcut ones or the yummy sweet potato fries. They have a bunch of cool dipping sauces, like spicy berbere ketchup and garlic mash, and siracha ranch (yum).The servers are real nice and friendly, and will remember you if you frequent the bar. It's a hipster haven, for sure, full of mustaches, skinny jeans, and PBR, but I go anyways because it's divey and comfortable. Complete with a photo booth. read more

I think the 3 and a half stars on here is about right. We went because I'm always trolling for new breakfast places and it's down the street from Goodwill (so you can kind of walk off the breakfast). I had a bloody mary, green eggs and ham (with home fries) and a coffee. #1 -- this IS a hangover breakfast. The problem was I wasn't hung over, so it tasted DELICIOUS going down (really greasy, buttery english muffin, loads of green eggs and ham, enough swiss to actually taste it), but a couple of hours later I suffered from a bout of heartburn and indigestion the likes of which rival my father. Seriously. I'm only 25 -- I should be able to EAT these things and be like "whatever! let's day drink now! I love dance music!" but it was just AGITA FOREVER *capslock*. The bloody was good and spicy (but that's not exactly ideal when your belly is sensitive apparently) but I honestly did not like the coffee. I take mine black and I don't drink it much so it's like a little treat, but this was bitter and acidic (obviously) and while it had a rich flavor, that kind of sucked cause it wasn't a GREAT flavor. #2 -- on hipsters, you know, yeah. The staff dress really cool and they have artful haircuts and I would wager dimes to donuts (lol wut?) that they are like 98% vegan BUT they were also super kind and talkative and friendly so you know back off, bros! At least they're not yuppie assholes. #3 -- the seating is terrible and stressed me out. Good luck getting a table (there are like 4) -- most likely you'll be sitting at the bar. My food was ready in under twenty minutes and the food was delicious - "out of this world"! We love the Cubano sandwich at this place, but got tired of being treated like garbage, ignored, or literally yelled at by the serving staff and bartenders. Sandwich isn't that good. Last time we got ignored for 15 minutes and then the server had the nerve to raise his voice to my girlfriend for no reason whatsoever, so we walked across the street to the Historian, spent less money, got better food, and were given free shots after we told them what happened. We both work in the service industry - that's what good service looks like. Saturday night especially I wouldn't recommend coming for anything but a quick draw, if you can find room at the bar. My water was never refilled in the 45min visit. The waiter was not friendly. Example: we asked that our bills be separate and he said "you still gotta order" and appeared annoyed. The Soul Bowl was disgusting. The greens were not cooked down as they should be and added a horrible texture. The mashed potatoes were instant (if not then a new supplier is needed). Sadly I had a better bowl at KFC. The good news is that our vegan friends did say their food was good. With all the options on South Broad it is hard to commit to going back here. read more

This place has earned it's poor rating. Don't get me wrong- the food is awesome. It's some of the best Mac and cheese I've had in Colorado. But the customer service is so incredibly bad. I get it's a hipster spot, not cool to be too friendly. But my bartender ignored me for 20 mins, only helping the man sitting next to me. I almost left, I felt embarrassed. Then the other bartender, a woman, refilled the guys drinks, asked how it was, didn't even look at me. There were 3 people at the bar, and wait staff ignored me to the point of making me feel bad. This place is the perfect place to nurse a hangover at a discount. The food is straight forward with good flavors. A craffe of mimosas is super cheap. The decor is simply put Colorado hippie/hipster but it isn't obsessed with itself like many other South Broadway establishments. I have had the breakfast burrito and several other items on the brunch menu which keeps changing. They have all been above average. I have never done it for happy hour but that's a huge error on my part as they have 1.50 corn dogs as well as some munchies for your (likely thinner) vegetarian friends. If you are in the area and looking for something that is a lot more local feeling that PBS, this is good bet. The service is good and you should feel comfortable bringing your children for breakfast if they can handle a few off color bumper stickers on the wall. Not sure that's a good move in the evenings... Seemed like just about everything could be made vegan or vegetarian. I got the jackfruit tacos and was blown away, first by the taste and then the spice. They have amazing flavor but sooo spicy. My husband got the bahn mi but didn't realize it was pork belly instead of the traditional meat in it so he didn't like his food. I was excited about the huspuppies but they weren't what I expected. Still good but more of like a very dense donut rather than the southern cornmeal ones I grew up with. Still can't wait to go back! read more
