The gelato here may be divine, but I'll never know because I absolutely cannot tear myself away from the homemade popsicles. And with flavors like strawberry sage, French toast, lemon blueberry basil and nutella (yeah I said nutella) can you really blame me? I think they sell for around $3.50 a pop so it may be pricey to some, but my mouth thanked me with every sweet lick of that frozen concoction on a stick. Spuntino was a great experience. Staff was friendly, ambiance is good. I almost drank the broth that came with the mussels. The baby squid was perfect as well. For apps I had the steak and she had the cavatelli. Like some have said, the portions are smaller but that gave us the room to try a couple more things. The only thing I thought was disappointing is they have this big, beautiful bar and only serve wine... no mixed drinks or beer. Weird. Maybe they'll have a full bar soon? Also super weirded out by some of the reviews on here. 1 star rage/anger for the portion sizes? I am not sure whether I feel more anger or disbelief when it comes to Spuntino. I just finished lunch there, and to say I left disappointed and wanting underestimates the depth of those feelings. Wanting because the food truly is delicious and tasty. Disappointed, because as a consumer, I do not appreciate feeling short changed and taken advantage of. I ordered the pork belly meatball sandwich. OUTSTANDING. Wanted more and more. However, for the price, I expected more than a 3 inch sandwich, sliced in half with two sliced meatballs, and a side of marinara sauce (ALSO OUTSTANDING) I further made the mistake of going to this place in a large group, which automatically meant a 20% tip added to the bill. Splitting amongst the eleven of us, I footed a $14 payment portion. No sides offered on the sandwiches, and anything extra meant an upsale charge for potato salad or a side salad. Everyone enjoyed the food, but when it came to the rest of the experience my group felt split. Portion sizes fluctuated and no two portions sized up equally. Some sandwiches showed more girth and substance, while unfortunately, the meatball sandwich I ordered, which really served more like one slider, left me starving afterwards. In closing, I do understand the concept and direction of Spuntino's. A hip, trendy, yuppie catering Italian Bistro really fits in the Highlands neighborhood. However, that area also sports a myriad of competing restaurants, pizzarias, cafes, and bar/grills that serve equally delicious food for a better price and portion sizes. I want this place to survive for great food always gives a restaurant a great foundation to build a business, and Spuntino's food is excellent. However, if consumers leave hungry and feeling they did not receive an amount of food commensurate with the pricing, that recipe spells failure in the long run. read more

I marvel at the food this place puts out with a kitchen that consists largely of an electric flat-top grill and one convection burner. That's pretty barebones for a restaurant kitchen. Not only is the fare amazing given that limitation, it's solid across the board. The small but frequently changing menu presents my favorite challenge in a restaurant: What to order. Because EVERYTHING looks amazing. And from multiple visits, it is. And because the menu is so incredibly shareable, it's not hard to get through lots of courses and tastes. Small plates are interesting and flavorful and range from a daily assortment of fresh and pickled seasonal veggies, rillettes that are as good as any, daily rotation of interesting cheeses, interesting salads (a recent asparagus salad was a particular favorite but it's given way due to seasonal changes), and a house made porchetta that's truly amazing (pork tenderloin wrapped in pork belly and thinly sliced). Pastas are consistently perfect. As good or better than any in town. Whether stuffed (sheets of pasta filled with spring peas, asparagus and a blend of cheeses served in a little light chicken broth) or not (cavatelli with pesto and guanciale), they nail them every time. Entrees too are extraordinary. The seared chicken thighs with cannellni beans and chorizo and romesco sauce is proof that chicken doesn't have to be the menu for people who don't like anything else. Outstanding quail and rabbit dishes too. The wine list is small and reasonable, but with some interesting selections, and cocktails are well made with great small batch spirits. And the staff is knowledgable, attentive and seems passionate about their food and the business. It's a winner across the board. read more

I loved Spuntino! Someone from work had recommended this place and I'm so glad I listened to their recommendation! We were able to book a same day reservation for 7:15pm on a Friday. While the place wasn't full when we arrived, it definitely filled up pretty quickly after our arrival with a good number of walk-ins. I did hear the host say they had a little bit of a wait around 7:30-7:45, so maybe reservations are a good idea. As for the ambiance, food, drinks - I loved everything. It's definitely your slower Italian style service, so just be prepared to lazily make your way through dinner. This isn't the place to try to get in and out for a quick bite. Take your time and enjoy your company! I had the carbonara pasta and the hubby had a pasta special - both of which were excellent. We also started with a Brussels sprout bruschetta and some porchetta, and gobbled up every last morsel. Pro tip - they only have reservations via Yelp. read more

Definite A for a dessert and an americano! My friends and I descended upon Spuntino rather randomly last night, standing across the street in the cold and wanting not-cold dessert. They were warmly accommodating as a rather large group of us came in not too long before closing; we received genuine service and beautiful sweets. Being a group of 7, we ordered a handful of desserts to share which ended up being an abundant amount: +Orange olive oil cake with pistachio gelato: The gelato flavor was subtle, or perhaps just in comparison to the cake. I really enjoyed the texture of the cake, which had a nice crisp but soft/moist/spongy inside. +Tart of the day (something & pear) paired with the nectarine cream gelato. Not too sweet, and the crust was crisp and semi-flaky, nice taste. +Macaroons: Amazing. They felt light, and has kind of ruined other macaroons for me. +Meringue (I apologize, I don't remember all the details of this one): Nicely tart, if you enjoy tart. It had a nice light airiness, but needed a while to thaw before becoming easily devoured. +A cup of gelato (nectarine, mango, and tiramisu): Nectarine was smooth and sweet, mango really popped with flavor, tiramisu was lacking definition. AND there were drinks. Americanos were superb, nice and rich. Exciting wine selection (well, the fact that they have Infinite Monkey Theorem's wine in a can is exciting for me). read more

Spuntino is one of my very favorite high end restaurants and I have always had the best experience there whenever I have dined. First off, the staff is world class in terms of their knowledge about the food and drinks, their kindness and their overall professionalism. My husband loves to nerd out with the bar staff about cocktails and different liquors and they often will give him a little taster or two of something they like he might be interested in, just because they enjoy sharing what they love (thanks Janine!). As for the food, everything you order is top notch in terms of quality and taste. We we always love trying the arancini and burrata (they change it up every season so it's always on the menu but with a new twist throughout the year) and I was envious of the couple next to us that ordered the verdure board as it looked so good. I am not a big meat eater, and appreciate that the menu always has several vegetarian or vegetarian friendly options throughout that aren't just side notes. Finally, I have always seen the owners working elbow to elbow with the staff every time I've come, which is just plain awesome. 5 stars. read more

We had the most amazing pasta with truffles as well as pork with a Moroccan flavor palette. We also got a bottle of the most fantastic Grenache at the recommendation of the sommelier. Since it opened, Spuntino, is and has been my favorite "go-to" restaurant in my Highlands neighborhood. Not only is the restaurant quaint and beautiful, especially at night with the soft warm light and the inviting open decor but the food and service never disappoints. Elliot and Cindoo have continued the local, seasonal, inventive menu selections that began with original owners, John and Yasmin, and have added wonderful new touches making Spuntino evolve into their personal vision of culinary magic. The entire staff ensure that diners are made to feel special. Each plate is seasoned just so making each bite from appetizer to dessert delectably memorable. Wine and cocktails are excellent--last night I had the "Bourbanator" which was magnificent and refreshing. The gorgonzola bruschetta was perfect along with a gorgeous asparagus, arugula, farro, tender bacon belly and a mustard dressing that was superb. The Super Tuscan red paired nicely with the home-made Tagliatelle with Hunter & Gather stinting nettles, house made pork sausage and pistachios that was fresh and flavor-rich while melting in one's mouth. My dinner partner enjoyed the Melanzana an inventively tasty variation on a traditional Moroccan tagine of roasted spiced eggplant and spring vegetables. On to heavenly desserts that embody a sweet note without being too sweet. I enjoyed the macaroon with the sea salted caramel gelato with dark chocolate while my sister chose the Apricot Blueberry Tart that was paired with cardamom cream, toasted graham cracker and for di panna gelato along with Boxcar Espresso. Wow, dinner here was amazing! Not your typical Italian restaurant, that's for sure. Incredible salads, unique and delicious small plates, and a phenomenal butternut squash risotto for the main course. Everything here is so fresh, creative, and flavorful. Almost all ingredients are sourced locally or made in house. The service was incredible - our server Tyler was all over everything we needed yet was never intrusive. The owner and head chef each stopped by to make sure we had a great experience. I have eaten here multiple times and always had a truly great meal. My boyfriend and I went here on Saturday night after we read the 5280 25-Best review. They place was really busy, but luckily we got a spot at the bar. Sure, there was a little wait for things but the place was hopping, and frankly, from what we were smelling, we were pretty sure it would be worth waiting for. We had the duck liver mousse, and all I can say is WOW. The texture was so incredibly light, truly a mousse. Incredible flavor, too. So smooth, so creamy, not at all harsh which can sometimes happen with liver. Forget chicken live pate. Too dense, and too sharp and harsh a liver flavor for me. Blech. I'll never order that again after having this duck liver mousse. We also had the Angnolotti, or I think it's on the menu as Squash Tortellini. It was pretty clear to both of us that this dish was from start to finish made by hand, by really, really skilled hands. I even asked, and the chef said they make their own pasta each day, which was pretty clear from the beautiful, silky texture. And they roasted the squash - no canned crap here - which was made obvious by the incredible flavor of the filling. I read a couple of review where people whined about the portion sizes. First of all, I think those Negative Nancy's are masters of hyperbole. Every dish I saw go out, including ours, had 8 lovely, plump agnolotti - not four. And frankly, I think the portion size was perfect for the price, given the care they obviously take in making all their food from really high-quality ingredients. It's not Olive Garden - thank GOODNESS. So if you want to stuff your gob with massive quantities of sub-par food, don't go here. If you want to really savor and enjoy great, expertly made food, then definitely come here! read more

Just went here tonight to celebrate my birthday with my sister and friend from out of town. This is really not a true Italian restaurant. It has to much of a spicey flavor, that overwhelms the food to call it Italian. The pasta dish we had was so over spiced, that it felt like they added pasta to the spice. When told the owner was from India this made sense. The other pasta dish was under cooked and again bland and over hot spice. The $12 salad was good but extremely over priced. We were told we could split it, well no, it was barely enough for one person. We had to ask for bread and when we got it, it was one type, not impressed, taste store bought. Now I've been to many nice restaurants, 4/5 star. I'm not making my review in comparison to them, but to a Urban neighborhood, slightly upscale Denver restaurant. On a positive note I enjoyed the ambiance. Would I return, probably not. read more

Spuntino is over-the-moon delicious. That's all ye need to know. In a complete personal opinion way, they are too meat based for my liking. But, that's because I'm mostly vegetarian. But, their salads are simple and they are so well put together. When I think of Spuntino, I think of a little sidewalk cafe in Italy. I suppose that's what they were trying to accomplish and it worked. It's very European--simple, straightforward, but you know that behind they scenes, they work hard to put together something that is so yummy. I think they must overnight the best ingredients from wherever it is they get their ingredients, because unlike most places in Denver (the air is dry and altitude), they have extremely fresh ingredients. They have these desserts, from gelato to chocolate chip cookies and macaroons (I don't even like macaroons) that are the best! read more

This was the best meal we had while visiting my sister in Denver! I'm really happy we stumbled upon the listing when looking for a nice Italian dinner spot in the Highlands neighborhood. The atmosphere is trendy and cute with a great "recycled" look to the wooden bar. Think industrial chic. Every single person we interacted with, from host to server to manager at the end of the meal, went out of their way to be friendly and accommodating. Very personable! Best of all the food was delicious and even somewhat inventive. We tried: - Seasonal vegetable plate with pickled vegetables, fun for different tastes - Beet Salad and Asparagus Salad, yummy, they do veggies well - Mussels, this was the only dish deemed only "okay", missing some punch - Chicken with romesco or harrisa, delicious - Baked Salmon was the market fish of the day, perfect - Homemade Pasta special of the day was ravioli with zucchini blossom and ricotta and fava beans, something entirely unique and delicious - Dessert was the sea salt caramel gelato with chocolate ganache, holy cow this is heaven (and bigger than expected for price) I like how they had a $28 bottle of wine that they were promoting as their special that night... in fact, our total bill for Bottle of Wine, Appetizer, two Salads, four Entrees and Dessert was $130 before tax and tip. Maybe my Chicago pricing is off, but seriously, how are people saying this place isn't affordable as far as a nicer sit-down restaurants go? Nestled in the hot neighborhood of Highlands Spuntino is one restaurant worth visiting. They have their own private parking lot which in this neighborhood is a definite plus! The interior is comfortable and the ambiance is quite warm and welcoming. The staff gives personal and professional attention to all of their guests. The seating is comfortable and the decor reminded me of an upscale Italian Cafe'. We dined at Spuntino as a private party tonight and I was blown away by the menu selections! I am a vegan and was the only one in my party and they prepared a special dish just for moi! They created a divine salad that had a sophisticated palatability. Each dish was definitely created with exquisite care and presentation. I look forward to my next trip to Spuntino! read more

Why has it taken me so long to get into Spuntino? I'm so glad I finally went for lunch, and I have to say I am eager to return. Today I had one of the best sandwiches I've had in a while. The bread was perfect, the greens were lightly dressed and the steak in my sandwich was oh-so rare (actually, it might have been too rare for anyone who doesn't like their steak close to raw, but it was perfect for me). Service was nice and the menu made me want to order everything on it. This isn't quite a place where you'd like to sit and linger, as the atmosphere is definitely more grab and go than enjoy a relaxing meal but it was perfect for a week-day lunch. One complaint: I do appreciate that you want to keep your gelato case free of little fingerprints and smudges, but please don't spray a ton of Windex on your case right when I'm about to dig into my steak sandwich. The chemical-y smell of Windex doesn't to much for the appetite right when I'm about to dig in to my meal. Also, I've had their popsicles in the past and I think they are hit or miss. However, I love that they are always experimenting with flavors, and I'd rather they keep playing with new combinations and I'm happy to drop a few dollars on a honeydew melon/pepper popsicle just for the sheer novelty - even if the flavor wasn't a keeper. read more

Went her for Denver restaurant week and was not overly impressed. The food was very bland and similar in taste. The homemade pasta noodles were good so that's a plus, but had to order pasta on the side because the only pasta they had on the menu couldn't be made without mushrooms. For Italian, I thought I'd be able to eat pasta.... I was very happy with the bottle of wine, we ordered the Pinot noir and it was delightful. I understand that they finished renovations just last weekend (weekend before Labor Day weekend) and the place looks great. Since we recently relocated from the Bay Area, I have no idea what the place used to look like, but the "new" Spuntino was homey and cozy. Where I was disappointed was the portions, just another Yelp reviewer posted. I agree, the food is tasty. We had the special (a Hawaiian fish) and the spring pea pesto brushetta. Be forwarned: you get two pieces of brushetta, which was difficult to share between a party of three. Of the entrees, we found the pappardelle with lamb bolognese to be average and the flank steak to be pitifully small and not flavorful at all. The only standout was the fish of the day. My $9 glass of wine could not have been more than 4 oz. which was disappointing. Most restaurants these days pout 5-6 ounces of wine. The next night I went to dinner at Bistro Vendome and was very happy when I got a regular 6 oz of wine. Because appetizers and dinner was so disappointing, we decided to go elsewhere for dessert. I hope that Spuntino can improve the portions or reprice their dishes to reflect the tapas-sized dishes. I'm not asking for ginormous portions like what you get at standard American chain restaurants, just something fair enough that I don't feel robbed with the prices I'm paying. read more

Boring and pretentious. My wife and I fell in love with gourmet popsicles last year in St. Augustine, FL. After reading the article about Spuntino's in 5280 we were really excited to give the place a shot. We pulled up to the drive through and were sort of greeted by an unenthusiastic guy that seemed to cool to ever really work a day in his life. He informed us that he "couldn't really tell us what flavors they had"...?... OK... so I parked the car and hung with my dog while my wife went in. She came out with two popsicles and said "We are never coming back here" Apparently the too cool for life attitude persisted when she went inside and she was made to feel like an interruption in the day of the staff. I had a pistachio chocolate pop and she had a berry pop of some sort. Mine was really gooey -gelatinous- on the outside and hard in the middle. The flavor was good enough but not anything like we expected. Her berry pop was more refreshing and the consistency was more of what you expected from a popsicle. I was really looking forward to what they had to offer and was really excited about telling them what I had tried in other parts of the country. You can do really great things with popsicles! They are not doing great things. I really hope someone moves in and fills this niche. BTW, we went on June 4th at around 5:00. If I were the owner I would think about having a meeting with the staff who were on duty to train them on basic customer service. read more

My experience at this restaurant was fine, given that I was dining with 3 other people and catching up with 2 of them that I had not seen in a couple of years. I think if I had the same experience but with just one other person, I would have been a bit irritated with all the mishaps in food and waiting so long for food to come out. First, I think it was very nice of the restaurant to give us some time to look over the menu and let us put in our appetizers orders first, rather than the entire order all at once. Our server was just lovely, very polite and gracious in general, although we saw her less and less throughout the evening. We were told that our mains would come out quickly, but waited nearly 20 minutes, which we later on found out was miscommunication with the kitchen. Our server was apologetic, and comped one of our desserts for the wait, but as I mentioned, generally increasingly not as attentive as the meal went on. The appetizers were great. I was really looking forward to the pasta course where I'd ordered the pasta del giorno (cavatelli) for one of my friends, and risotto for myself. I was very disappointed by the risotto - it was like eating porridge with beef stock poured over it. Either they don't know how risotto is cooked, or it was sitting on the stove for 20 minutes waiting for the other dishes to finish. The one small chunk of short rib was dry and not tender at all the way you'd expect short ribs to be. The cavatelli dish was so salty it was inedible after one bite. My friend with self proclaimed limited taste buds offered to eat that dish instead, but couldn't make it through a quarter of it. It felt like the idea was there, but the execution was pretty off. Our table also ordered the ravioli and the striped bass dishes. I didn't try them but the two guests that did said they were very enjoyable. Anyway, the service was pretty good, maybe just needs to be a little more consistent; and I feel like if a restaurant prides itself on food and is going to take the care and hand make their own pasta (and sausage!), it's disappointing that they aren't more aware with tasting each dish before those dishes come out. read more

This restaurant proves to me that Denver's food scene is alive and vibrant (and away from Downtown) chose this restaurant because of its write up in Westwood--and it surpassed our expectations. Everything that i tasted--from the porchetta appetizer to my chicken thigh entree (although the fish was much, much better) and the olive oil cake--was simply sublime. Best food I've had in Denver in a VERY long time...and this comes from someone who eats in NYC and New Orleans restaurants regularly. Soooooo good! My friend mentioned that I should give Spuntino a go so I did and I was blown away. The sabroso sandwich was spectacular! It is a perfect dose savory and filling on their housemade focaccia. My friend had the grain salad which she said, and I quote, "made me feel better about life." We were told all the gelatos and pastry's were made in house so we tried out the pear almond tart with torrone gelato on the side... seriously amazing. Spuntino is a truly fantastic little gem tucked next to Park Burger in the West Highlands. The service is amazing with very personable staff. Further the food is top notch with delectable pastas and other traditional Italian fare. The best part about the food is there was always something unexpected and delicious, for example the pancetta in the lentils for their scallops and the fresh corn in their farfalle. Wow! This place really is as good as it gets. Small, cool neighborhood place with amazing service and even more amazing food. I've been here several times for lunch (love their salads, the porchetta and the muffaletta sandwiches) and dinner (cavatelli or any of their homemade pastas are always a knockout). Spuntinos is a great place to share some small plates. Often an overlooked tasty gem of modern food and wine, you need to check this place out. Even though I stopped in during Restaurant Week, you would never know from the quality and attention each plate gets. Our waitress was sweet and knowledgable about all the dishes and the wine selection. She also help convince my friend to try their octopus and sea vegetable appetizer - which was my absolute favorite. The octopus texture was meaty and no where near the common chewy you often find. We also ordered a small cheese plate, something I will return just to snack on again. With almonds, honey and aged Spanish goat cheese. Yum! This place isn't terrible. I expect to pay a bit more for Italian food, but for the portion I received, I felt a bit jipped. I ordered the special ravioli and paid $15 for 6 medium-sized ravioli. I thought the sauce was amazing, but my food was cold and the service was pretty lacking. While our server was nice, he was MIA for most of our meal. I feel like this place has the potential to be awesome. It has a great location and the layout and decor of the restaurant was cool. I'd suggest offering more in the way of alcoholic beverages (only beer and wine are served here) and lowering the prices. Simply put, they need to tone-down the stuffiness. read more

I really REALLY wanted to like this place. It's down the street from work, it's really quaint and the food sounded amazing. I even went there twice in an effort to try to like it. The first time I went, I ordered a salad and added chicken to it. It was on the pricier side as far as salads go ($10 plus a couple bucks for tip), so I was expecting an amazing salad. I ordered it to go and they boxed it up in a really big box. I got back to work and was ready to enjoy a hearty salad. Boy was I wrong. This thing was TINY. IT looked like it was portioned for a five year old. It was good, but honestly I was hungry for the rest of the day. Definitely not a $12 salad. Not even close. The second time, I met a friend for lunch there. I learned my lesson- no salads. So I ordered a muffuletta sandwich. My friend also ordered a sandwich. I had about 45 minutes for lunch, PLENTY of time to grab a sandwich and dine in. WRONG AGAIN. The restaurant wasn't busy, only a couple of tables were occupied. But they took 25 minutes to make our sandwiches and serve us. My sandwich was very mediocre. I wasn't impressed, as I could have made a better sandwich myself. Our waitress was taking her time picking up our bill from the table, so we got up and walked over to the register to try and speed things along. You would think she would have taken the hint. Instead, she watched us wait as another employee was busy offering samples to some people in front of us that had to try every flavor of gelato in their freezer. The register was free and she could have rang us up. Instead, after the people had sampled around a dozen flavors and paid, she walked up to us and said, "Oh, are you guys ready to pay?"
