Passing by Seattle and we were looking for a Fish & Chips place. I mean it's on the coast and they should have good seafood places. If you're looking for Fish and Chips, this is not the place to come. The fish is fried Fish, no beer batter and the batter had cinnamon in it. Fish batter with cinnamon, come on chef! The worse part of course,- the fish was not fresh at all. The fries were mediocre at best. But Alki beach is a great neighborhood, you'll enjoy the seats outside. read more

I always want to call this place "smugs" because it's across from Green Lake park, not because it's pretentious. This place is an anachronism - literally a throw back to an earlier, simpler time when no one gave a tinker's damn about polyunsaturated this or cholesterol that. Instead, it was just good clean food, deep fried, served fresh and hot, in and out in no time and you're full thank you very much. Yes, the milk shakes - the fries - everything is so old timey tasting. This is a terrific place to go if you need to get out of the cold or the wet. There's one down side - parking is pretty sparse, and they actually employ those fascist private rent-a-cops to give bogus tickets to people who park in the spaces behind the restaurant. But given where they are and who patronizes the place (you Seattle people, that's who) I guess I can understand the need for them to police their scarce parking resources. Go for the food, and if you're lucky and you go during a lull you might even meet some local color and have a nice conversation along with your food. read more

Prawns are to die for! SO FRESH and juicy and cooked to perfection, they POP in your mouth! They're by far the best I've had in Seattle - no joke. Way better than Salmon Cooker, Ivar's, The Brooklyn and Cutters (yuck). Tartare sauce is also delicious - it has a nice light yellow color and a tangy mayonaisey flavor with lots of diced sweet relish. Very, very nice. Cod was also cooked to perfection. This is a great year-round fish and chips place. The scenery is awesome but locals stay away in the summer. It can get really really crowded. They have gotten horrible in customer service and quality. The other older lady with long braids was awesome and isn't there anymore :( the fish is mostly bread and not fish. The staff doesn't smile and is pretty rude when asking for things or if things are included after ordering hundred and fifty dollars for our 5 person order. Totally has gone downhill and sucks... not worth the trip to alki anymore except for the view itself. Go to another location or try a similar place such as Ivars or any other place that sells fish and chips on alki. :( read more

For my family there is NO BETTER fish and chip place in the country! Flaky fish...in an amazing breaded coating. If you are counting carbs....LOL...I guess you could peel the crust off but man oh man....their fish is pure heaven. Fries are no biggie....fresh cut standard fries...tartar sauce is great and so is the vinegar. Parking is very very tricky when the weather is warmer..but you can't beat the view for lunch or dinner when you dine inside. We now live near San Francisco and let me tell you.....as close as we are to the water NO ONE can make a decent Fish and Chips. Either fishy...soggy....even on Fisherman's Wharf....yuck. Whenever I crave Fish and Chips I cry a little because we are too far away. But you can bet every single time I visit Seattle....this is my first stop!! We drive over from Sammamish whenever we feel the need for Fish and Chips. It's been our favorite for nearly 50 years. It might be best described as take-out, but there are some areas, especially upstairs, that are great for viewing the beach activity and the often interesting traffic that goes by. The line can get out the door sometimes on a nice day but the wait is usually not long. read more

Nothing fancy just good ol' classic Fish & Chips. Had the nice location on Alki Beach and was a walk up to order style restaurant which I think is ideal for my idea of classic fish & chips. I ordered a Double Order (2 cod filets and a large fry) and a cup of chowder. I give them both 7.5/10. Chowder was nothing to write home about but good enough that I finished the cup even after two nice sized filets of cod and fries. Menu was fairly priced and I would recommend stopping by if you're in the area and craving some fish & chips. Well, I'm only 30, but I've been coming here since I was born (I'm sure prior) my parents met at alki, married now this will be their 46435th anniversary I also met my spouse at alki, 11years ago, so to say alki is special to me is an understatement I was also proposed to at alki, and theirs no other place I eat every single visit than SPUDS ! But unfortunately I'm coming to realization that the familiar faces I've seen throughout the years are becoming very scarce and without sounding mean, but honestly, with new people who just don't know how to cook fries to spuds perfection, unfortunately I don't eat fish, but those chicken tenders have been my meal since the first time I stepped into spuds, and let me say this, when did chicken and fries turn into kids chicken strips(special menu option) 3 tenders about the size of my pinky my family and I went this last Sunday, and of course enjoyed the social distancing. They were open ! very friendly, but the fries WERE SO SALTY !!!! I've never even tasted that much salt on a fry and we got 4 separate meals, 3 of the meals were $45 I know the fries have gone down hill which is so unfortunate but to have the much salt on an entire batch. I'll just say, the kids enjoyed feeding the birds our fries. Again, my heart will always be with alki and spuds, but it's looking to be an end of era of great cooks, but I will leave with THANK YOU FOR BEING FRONTLINE WORKERS AND CONTINUING TO FEED SEATTLE, we all do appreciate you all working. This is a West Seattle landmark - we grew up eating here. The location is awesome and the chow is great - classic fish and chips with a shake is the perfect meal. Their coleslaw is so good! Nothing could get better than the view from this restaurant. Or so I thought before I tasted my first fish and chip there. It was perfectly crispy, tender, flavorful, and the sauce/vinegar is divine. I ordered the 3 piece fish with fries which is enough for 2 people. The fish was not overly breaded and fried nicely golden brown:) Not to mention super meaty! Fries were just ok. I used to love coming here but last visit was very disappointing. We got an order of halibut and chips, clam strips and pint of clam chowder. Clam chowder was great as always. However, the portion of clam strips and halibut was ridiculous. 3 halibuts look like 1.5 but divided by 3 :-? And it costs us like almost $38 dollars. I could have brought in and asked them but oh well it's social distancing and I don't want to give anyone a hard time because of the current pandemic. But come on please look at your portion and the price again since I don't think we can come back with this. What makes this food so good, honestly, is the location. I think if it were anywhere other than Alki beach, it just wouldn't work! The one thing I can say for sure about Spud's is that it is a love it or hate it place... Went with a group of 4 people, we walked there from my apartment. And half of us loved it, the rest of us hated it. I thought it was greasy and didn't feel very good after eating it. I did enjoy the view, and I thought the service was friendly and the price wasn't bad, but...... 1/2 of my family members who live out of state have it on the top of their list of places to go when they come to Seattle, the other 1/2 would only go if there was cash payment to them involved. So, I can't say it is a bad place because it has it's fans.... but I wouldn't go just because, I would only go if I was with family or friends that already knew they loved it and that's where they want to eat. read more

been eating here for many years. Yesterday ordered a take out. I am 75 yo and it was cold out. So I asked the young lady if she would bring the order to my car, (I was parked in front, at curb). She gave me a bad look and said 'we only bring the order to the door.' So my wife waited outside for order. Came home and starting eating. The fish had a bit of unusual taste and smell. Well, I know I'm going to offend a few people but that's alright, this is only my opinion.. My wife and I decided a little trip to Alki would be good, so we stopped in and saw "Spud" on the left, so we stopped in. The place is very cool looking, something you would see in a fishing town, and the servers were all very nice and welcoming individuals. The food, was really just mehh. The fries were pretty good, but the fish lacked a traditional English feel to it, with the Cod being a bit rough and chewy, and the breading being unlike anything I had eaten before. Maybe it's a recipe for some people, but for a beer-battered taste the only place I seemed to have found that meets the greasy English expectations is down in Portland, which is not my favorite place to go, and the Flying Scottsman. We went there for the first time. A friend of mine spoke highly about this place. She had been going there since she was a child. The food was good I think they over cooked my fries though. We ordered cod and chicken strips and clam chowder. We ate on the second floor we had a great view of the beach. This place is very popular people everywhere. I'm glad we found a spot on the second floor. They have only two toilets one for women and another one for men. So be prepared to wait to use the bathroom. The staff was very friendly. read more

This place is a West Seattle icon. I don't live very close which makes me kind of sad every time I get the craving for fish and chips. I usually order cod because it is really good. Last time I tried the scallops which were ok but seem like they lose some of their sweet, succulent taste when fried. Glad that my wife had ordered cod too, so I got to eat some of that too. I just know I'm going to be wanting fish and chips soon so hopefully I'll have a chance to get back to Seattle soon! read more

Really good, simple fish and chips. A little pricey until I saw the size of the fish pieces. Huge, I tell ya! I really liked the different choices of vinegar to slosh around the table. After a great first experience, the last few visits have sucked. The food is always good but the service gets worse everyone. Seriously, the kids that are left in charge of that place don't give a rat's ass that you are there. I've been using them for my fish and chips for over 30 years in the last 3 years they have not lived up to my likings the cost went up I don't mind that the fish is not as good I think they are buying cheaper fish and it's way thinner and the crust is like harder not what we got in the 80 or 90 or 2000S the fish has gone from a 3 oz to a 2 oz per piece and the fries well they used to cover the bottom of the holder not no more and I had an order of claims [[ only ]] they didn't even cover the bottom of the basket it might have been 2 oz at 6.99 cost of lunch 20 bucks and I went home 1/3 of what we usually get i,m [[ DONE WITH THEM ]] going to find a better place I heard the guy on 35 this better next time id bet in total for the 20 bucks I got 5 oz of fish sick to give them a good review when they don't and are not being anywhere close to fair read more

Lots of reviews on this place claim Spud's has fantastic fish and chips. Naturally we had to try because who doesn't like fish and chips? Upon our arrival (around 5pm) there was a line nearly out the door. The place was packed so naturally the noise inside was LOUD. And hot. Very hot inside, we opted for the outdoor seating and were entertained by a seagull digging tartar sauce containers out of the trash. Hungry bird. There were tons of crows flying around and making a racket. The trash bins were overflowing and spilling across the sidewalk. Tables were filthy but a quick scrub with a wet napkin and viola! Clean seating. Service was pretty fast and friendly. My husband ordered the special, 3 pieces of fish, a large tartar sauce and large drink with some clam chowder (how he could eat the chowder in the heat is beyond me..) and I got a one piece fish and chips. The fish pieces are huge... I was surprised. However, the fish looked and tasted way over battered. The fries we got were cold and had been overcooked (last time I checked black char is over done). Not good at all. I didn't bother finishing mine and neither did my husband (though since he ordered so much I'm doubtful he could have finished it all anyway). I will say their ice cream shake was pretty good. Tasty on a hot day. Stick with the regular size as it's pretty big. The shake did not make up for the disappointing fish and chips. Great food and location but a serious issue with service. I paid for a meal and the server seriously refused to give me ketchup in spite of the menu clearly stating that ketchup is part of the meal. Even if the ketchup were not clearly on the menu, who in their right mind refuses to just hand out a condiment at a fish and chips place? I wasn't the only one, either. Another customer was having a similar issue with the same server that was parroting the phrase "you have to request it" like there's some secret way to order.
