So my friends and I decided to walk ourselves over to Georgetown Cupcakes to see what the hoopla was all about. The entire time we told ourselves "we know the lines going to be long, everyone says its going to be long, but lets stand in it anyways." Haaaaaaaaaaa.... Once we SAW it...Pishhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...Heck No! We had read on Yelp that another cupcakery close by called Sprinkles was really good, if not better than Georgetown Cupcakes. Since I haven't tried GT cupcakes as yet, I don't know which one is better in my opinion. However, after trying the extremely delicious cupcakes from SPRINKLES, it's going to be a hard act to follow. The cake is perfect (moist/flavorful). The icing is perfect (not too sweet but makes my taste buds sing). Out of the few we tried, I think the LEMON and Red Velvet (obviously) was everyone's fave. In the Georgetown area, Sprinkles remains my favorite spot for a cupcake. They're owner is a judge on Cupcake Wars so I definitely think they know what they're doing here. I like that they smear their icing over the entire the cake so that the cake to icing ratio is just right. The cake is nicely dense and their icing is on the sweeter side, but not overwhelmingly so. Some of my faves include their marshmallow, carrot cake, and s'mores. Last time I was here, I split an orange cupcake with a girlfriend. The cake was fragrant and flavorful and we just gobbled it up. Seriously was the right fluffy texture and complimented the lemon filling and soft lemon yet vanillaesque inside. Did I mention it also had a graham cracker bottom. So I will give you my review and then everyone elses. I stole a piece of my husband's pumpkin cupcake. I thought it was dry and very spicy (ginger, cinnamon, etc). My husband ate the whole thing and said it was very moist and loved the frosting the best. So maybe it was because I had a small piece on the end? Who knows? I brought my mom for a nice dessert after lunch. I spent $18 on three cupcakes and one oatmeal cookie. For that price you expect something much tastier than a grocery store type of cupcake, which I don't buy. What a disappointment, as soon as I opened the box I was disgusted for the amount of frosting (buttercream) in comparison to the cake, then I took a bite and the three cupcakes went right straight into the trash. So that, I appreciated. 1 cupcake = $3.50 and 4 =$14 so nope, you don't save anymore buying bulk :p I only tried one cupcake today, the S'more. The cupcake had graham cracker on the bottom, chocolate cake, with marshmellowy icing. Overall, it was good..but nothing that blew me away. I hate to say this, it must be such a blow... but the chocolate cake was good, moist.. but I honestly wouldn't be able to distinguish it from chocolate cake I make from pre-mixes you buy at the grocery store. The marshmallow icing was pretty good. But overall, when I took a whole bite, I couldn't say that it screamed smore at me. There was a nice chocolate ganache/fudgey type thing in the middle which I appreciated. I think that was suppose to be the "melty" part of the smore. So would I go back? I have now tried Sprinkles on both the West and East Coast and I can say with confidence that they are not my favorite cupcake. I feel like they are the generic cupcake of the specialty cupcake world. The cupcakes are good, but forgettable. Nothing really stands out as amazing or makes you want to go back and get another. The cupcakes are a little bigger than Georgetown's and cost 75cents more as a result. At least the cake was moist, unlike Baked and Wired's strawberry cupcake which was crumbly and dry. I got the daily special, of Beverly Hills, which consisted of a chocolate cake with a marshmallow filling and a peanut butter frosting. I thought the marshmallow filling was tasteless, the chocolate cake was decent and the peanut butter frosting was too sweet. I would definitely recommend going on a weekday afternoon as there will be minimum lines and table space to enjoy your cupcake. Side note: I really don't like the little edible decorations they put on the cupcakes the colored circles. I feel like they make the cupcake look like a logo instead of something too eat and they do not taste good! In fact they have no flavor at all and they are hard to eat. This is my favorite cupcake place! I am part of their perks loyalty club and it's worth signing up even if you just get the free cupcake for signing up. My favorites are cuban coffee, dark chocolate and vanilla milk chocolate. Most of the flavors are delicious and have the right amount of sweetness, and taste fresher to me compared to competitors. We went when they were only doing Pick Up and Delivery orders and it was perfect. We placed the order online and got the cupcakes in 20 minutes which was a perfect amount of time to drive from home and arrive there. When I went to pick up the order, the guy greeted me kindly and asked for my order name. As soon as I caught a whiff of the Cupcakes, I knew it was going to be delicious. When my friend and I got home, we were so excited and at first bite were not disappointed. The cupcakes are worth it. The cake was not dry and the flavors were prominent and tasty. 10/10 would recommend. read more
