Had previously heard not great things about Sprinkles cupcakes and my one sample, severely years ago in NYC was dry and lacked flavor. As a result I tended to stick to the many other great cupcake shops in Georgetown/DC. Yesterday though, we decided to stop in when I was with a friend who worked at that location in college, and had fond memories of doing so. My selection based on her recommendations was sold out for the day (marshmallow chocolate and triple cinnamon) but I ended up with Lemon Blueberry and The Cookie (cupcake) which were season and/or limited time items. Thought they were both really excellent. Would love to go back to sample the chocolate passion fruit combo, an upcoming limited time flavor. Pricy, but to be expected for the area. The frosting is yummy but I felt like there was a tad too much frosting to cake ratio, so I didn't eat some of the frosting. There's a ton of unique dessert options in D.C., but Sprinkles can't be overlooked. Its cupcakes are on par with neighboring competition, and I can't describe enough how much I loved the salted caramel. The cakes are all moist and uniquely flavorful, and the frosting is simply amazing and fresh. They don't offer all their flavors every day, and sometimes they'll run out of the ones they do have out, but all options are truly delicious. So my friends and I decided to walk ourselves over to Georgetown Cupcakes to see what the hoopla was all about. The entire time we told ourselves "we know the lines going to be long, everyone says its going to be long, but lets stand in it anyways." Haaaaaaaaaaa.... Once we SAW it...Pishhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...Heck No! We had read on Yelp that another cupcakery close by called Sprinkles was really good, if not better than Georgetown Cupcakes. Since I haven't tried GT cupcakes as yet, I don't know which one is better in my opinion. However, after trying the extremely delicious cupcakes from SPRINKLES, it's going to be a hard act to follow. The cake is perfect (moist/flavorful). The icing is perfect (not too sweet but makes my taste buds sing). Out of the few we tried, I think the LEMON and Red Velvet (obviously) was everyone's fave. We were all surprised at the Lemon cupcake. Why? Because most of the lemon baked goods we tried in our lives have tasted like artificial overly lemon flavored mish mosh. This lemon cupcake will make you question "What have I been eating all this time?" and "Why didn't I know about this place sooner?" The Good: The service is good, but since I ultimately talk to the food, it really doesn't matter that much. The Bad: Triple cinnamon: Icing way too sweet, dense, and hardened (grocery store style). Cake dense, dry, and tasteless. The Ugly: Dark chocolate: This is the cupcake that traumatized me. Icing way too sweet, hard, with dense, dry ass stale chocolate cake. I could have made a better cake at home using all stale ingredients. Honestly thinking about it makes me turned off to cupcakes indefinitely (maybe that's a good thing). I want you to go try their fresh Red Velvet cupcake - with a super moist cake, just the right amount of cream and the perfect levels of sweetness, you cannot find anything better. In the Georgetown area, Sprinkles remains my favorite spot for a cupcake. They're owner is a judge on Cupcake Wars so I definitely think they know what they're doing here. I like that they smear their icing over the entire the cake so that the cake to icing ratio is just right. The cake is nicely dense and their icing is on the sweeter side, but not overwhelmingly so. Some of my faves include their marshmallow, carrot cake, and s'mores. Last time I was here, I split an orange cupcake with a girlfriend. The cake was fragrant and flavorful and we just gobbled it up. They were out of the Baily's cream cupcake the last time I came here so my friend who's an icing fanatic, decided to get a shot of the icing for $0.75. 10th anniversary free cupcake day?!? Don't mind if I do!!! There's a reason why sprinkles has been the trend setter of the cupcake world: no matter how old they are, they continue to re innovate themselves. I've been to the LA and Bay Area locations before and have always enjoyed them, especially the ice cream store in Beverly Hills, but to see them in DC I was a little skeptical and did not try them until now, but oh boy was I frikkin wrong! I went down to my knees from my experience today. Sprinkles was like a cougar cupcake store (10 years old franchise -ancient for a cupcake place) reeling me in for some deliciousness!!! I've tried practically all the flavors but wanted to review the limited flavors: Lemon meringue: Hands down one of the best cupcakes I have had!! The lemon toasted frosting was the bees knees! Seriously was the right fluffy texture and complimented the lemon filling and soft lemon yet vanillaesque inside. Did I mention it also had a graham cracker bottom. Reminded me of a smores cupcake but lemon flavored. Apple cinammon: a little dryer, but nice Apple flavor with strong cinammon under tones. So I will give you my review and then everyone elses. I stole a piece of my husband's pumpkin cupcake. I thought it was dry and very spicy (ginger, cinnamon, etc). My husband ate the whole thing and said it was very moist and loved the frosting the best. So maybe it was because I had a small piece on the end? Who knows? I was super excited to bring my friend here to show what DC has to offer. We both LOVE cupcakes and all things dessert and pretend to be judges on Cupcake Wars as we taste them. I've watched every single episode and judge all desserts for fun. We are going around DC testing all the cupcake places. With that said, I'm disappointed in these cupcakes. As my friend said, "We could have bought these at Giant at 6 for $5.99." Sprinkle: the cake was dry and flavorless. The icing was sugary with no flavor. The icing didn't enhance the cake and the cake didn't enhance the icing. I'm not sure if there was a strategy there to put them together or just a simple thought of, "Wow those would look cute together!" with no consideration of flavor. Pillsbury Funfetti cake mix has more flavor and moisture than this $4 cupcake. We were not able to finish this cake because there was no justification for putting this dessert into our bodies. Dark Chocolate: the chocolate sprinkles on the icing were the best part of this cupcake -- I found myself searching for those that fell off to let them melt on my tongue. Once again, however, the icing was too sugary and the cake was nothing special. I usually love dark chocolate but I got more milk chocolate flavors than dark, which had me searching for the rich flavor. Perhaps rebrand this one as simply a chocolate cupcake? Overall: this place is quite overrated. I really tried to defend the cupcakes to my friend while we tasted, but in the end it was difficult to find positives of either cupcake. Giving an extra star simply for the chocolate sprinkles on the dark chocolate cupcake and the service -- the attendant was kind and friendly. I thought this place was ok. My friends and I came in the evening, and so most of the selection was gone already (which is totally fine, and to be expected!). But I'm a little annoyed that there wasn't much seating beyond 2 booths. We decided on the red velvet and coconut after a little debate.
