I really enjoyed the strawberry cupcake until it got to the espresso one and that made me very sick. I've been a longtime fan of Sprinkles cupcakes because I grew up in the LA area and had their cupcakes often. I was craving them now that I live in DC, so I ordered some. And I was so disappointed. I think they've gotten smaller, but they were still so expensive - another classic case of shrink-flation. Prices stay the same, but the product isn't as high-quality or you receive less quantity. Plus, I was so excited to try the seasonal gingerbread cupcake. But when I got it it was sooo dry. And I liked the crust on the bottom, but it fell apart too easily and was so crumbly and dry. The Sprinkles location in Georgetown, DC, is a good cupcake option in the city. Since opening in the early 2010s, I've visited a few times and my most recent visits this year came after an over decade-long gap since the previous visit because my earlier experiences were simply not good. I am pleased and proud to say the quality of their cupcakes and product consistency has improved, making the brand very competitive on M Street where there are other competitive cupcake shops within walking distance. However, I did notice the size of the cupcakes are noticeably smaller compared to the earlier days when they first opened. Despite the smaller-sized cupcakes, the price certainly increased. The cupcakes are moist and the icing is delicious. They have a catalogue of various flavors, some traditional and others, novelty. They also have treats for pups. The customer service was very good and the ordering process is conducted via kiosk in the lobby, which again is an update from my earlier experiences with the shop. I honestly tried Sprinkles out because I am a huge fan of Cupcake Wars and recently also saw those viral videos of people at Sprinkle kiosks at airports that sing the Sprinkles jingle very loudly to them when they dispense the cupcakes. While the song (unfortunately for us but not the workers) doesn't play when you go in person, the cupcakes are great. They are a good sized, and there is a good selection. We tried the strawberry, chocolate, and red velvet, but we also went at the end of the day when they were mostly sold out, so I recommend going when all the options are out! There were 2 staff members here when I came in and they were friendly. They helped the customers fairly quick so everyone was able to get in and out with their order within 5-10 mins. There were 2 areas to sit inside but it's more of a take and go shop. I usually like their cupcakes cause they have the basic flavors but also a few unique/seasonal ones but the one I got this time was just okay. I decided to go with the lemon blueberry - the cake was moist and had plenty of blueberries but the lemon didn't shine through as much. I've ordered here a few times. The look of them alone are crowd pleasers. I prefer the mini versions to the large ones, only because I find the large ones to have an abundance of icing which isn't my preference. The cakes are moist, and every flavor I've tried has been delicious. My go-to is always red velvet, but I have to say with this place any flavor is worth trying. These are always a hit for birthdays- it's definitely way better to get a few cupcakes and flavors to mix and let people choose than one giant cake with fake icing from the local grocer. Sprinkles is one of the better cupcake places I have tried, especially in the Georgetown area. However, I have definitely had better, which is why I would give them 4/5 stars. I ordered the salty caramel, strawberry, vanilla milk chocolate, and red velvet cupcakes. I thought all of those flavors were good, but all of them were just a tad dry, but the frosting was very tasty and paired nicely with the cupcake. However, some of the frosting was a little bit crusty, which I didn't love. My favorite of them was probably the vanilla milk chocolate, and I liked the addition of the sprinkles for texture. The service has become more automated, with your orders being placed over a touch screen. And the shop is pretty small, with there being extremely limited seating (maybe enough for ten people or less). I would say this is one of the best cupcake places in Georgetown that I have tried and I would probably return again, but it is definitely not my favorite cake place. read more

I've been to Sprinkles countless times specifically the location in NYC and every time I've been there, I've always been extremely pleased so I could not pass up an opportunity to visit the Georgetown location of Sprinkles in DC. This location is a lot smaller than the location I visit in NYC and lacks the ice cream selection but the staff definitely makes up for it. When I entered Sprinkles, I was greeted by Tia, who was more than willing to describe the cupcakes and answer all my questions. I settled on the sampler pack which includes a miniature vanilla, strawberry and red velvet cupcake, as well as four regular size cupcakes; vanilla, strawberry, red velvet and lemon blueberry. The sampler pack is a perfect assortment of cupcakes for dessert or an afternoon snack. The regular size cupcakes on the other hand are rather large and can easily be cut in half and shared. The lemon blueberry cupcake features a lemon cake with blueberries inside the cake topped with a lemon buttercream which had little bits of lemon rind in the frosting to enhance the lemon flavor. The red velvet cupcake, which was my favorite, was paired with a cream cheese frosting. The strawberry cupcake was paired with a strawberry buttercream, and the vanilla cupcake was paired with a vanilla buttercream. All cupcakes including the miniature cupcakes, were a little on the dryer side than what I remembered from past visits but the flavors were good, the frostings were perfect and not too sweet. If you're in the area, I recommend you try Sprinkles if you're looking for a variety of flavors, including seasonal flavors that have a touch of uniqueness. read more

What's happened to Sprinkles? This business isn't what it used to be. Isn't that what old people always say? And now, as an old person, I am saying it. Sprinkles has fallen from what it used to be. And I was there 13 years ago on opening day when Candace and the whole Cupcake Wars crew was there. Does Candace know what this store looks like? The missing table.. I had to peer through the window to see if they were even open. Business overall must be bad because they closed their Penn Station (NYC) cupcake ATM which is where I usually got my June birthday cupcake because I visit NYC every June for my birthday. But ok, I'll go to the Georgetown location. I went in to get my birthday cupcake told them I'd be having it there instead of to-go. It was put in a little brown paper bag. I asked do you have plates? No. NO PLATES? How do you not have plates anymore. A PAPER PLATE. That's apparently asking too much. I asked if they had a cup for water. No cup for water. What?? I asked do you at least have a fork? They had a fork - and by the way not the old ones they used to have that were made out of recycled material and said Sprinkles on them. It was just a basic plastic fork but hey I'm not complaining because at least they had that. One of my best friends sent me cupcakes for my birthday, and wow were they delicious. It's been years since I had sprinkles and I'm not sure why after eating them! I guess I need to get to Georgetown more often! I had a black and white, a red velvet, and a vanilla milk chocolate. The black and white cupcake was a chocolate cupcake with vanilla frosting- it was really chocolatey and delicious! The red velvet was super moist with a tangy cream cheese frosting (this one was my favorite) and the vanilla cupcake wasn't overly sweet and had a great mellow chocolate frosting. These cupcakes look better than they taste. The texture of the cake part is fluffy, and the frosting texture is fine too, maybe a little crunchy on the edges, which you may or may not like. However, most of the flavors aren't there in my opinion. The chocolate cake base (for the dark chocolate and s'mores flavors) was so light that I'm not sure I could identify it as chocolate if I had my eyes closed--more like a box mix you'd make for a kid's birthday than the distinct flavor I'd hope for from $5/cupcake. All the chocolate flavor in the s'mores cupcake was from the ganache center, and all the chocolate flavor in the dark chocolate cupcake was from the chocolate sprinkles, not even the frosting. The sprinkle cupcake, which is supposed to have a birthday cake base, tasted strongly of baking soda more than anything else. The red velvet cupcake nailed the named flavor the most. The cake base was actually tangy like proper red velvet should be, not just mild cocoa. It's the only flavor I might come back for. Since there's so little seating, this location can't serve as a cute cafe to hang out in, which would've helped justify the price. As it is, the main situation I would recommend Sprinkles is if you want to get an aesthetic gift for someone who likes pretty things and doesn't have a discerning palate. Even in that case, while the box is cute, you have to be careful holding it. It's all folded together without tape, so putting pressure on the bottom undoes it a little and spills sprinkles. Sometimes they have 4 for the price of 3 deals that you can watch out for on Instagram, which helps make it a little less overpriced if you want to try multiple flavors. I've ordered from Sprinkles on numerous occasions because they run out of cupcakes quickly unless you place an order. I'm not sure if it's a capacity order with the baking because it's never crowded . However, tastes delicious.. I had to speak to a manager roughly a week and a half ago because I had rude sales person, who decided to slide my bag over to me and dismiss me, but was able to be very friendly with the other patrons. The manager I spoke to was very receptive to my complaint and said they were passing it on to the owner, which I never heard from. It is daunting to know that a person has a negative experience at a place they frequency often and doesn't receive follow up. My favorites are generally the red velvet, vanilla, and caramel and lemon blueberry (gluten free, they are usually sold out and this time was no exception). While this is one of my more favored cupcake places, It doesn't meet all my requirements for a solid cake. While i appreciate the cake isn't too sweet, I feel it is always a tad not sweet enough. But considering the frosting is very sweet and not light at all, I think it works. I also think the frosting to cake ratio can be a little higher. It is not a fluffy frosting. It is definitely more firm and dry to the touch. I like that the cake is almost always soft. But at the same time it lacks the right amount of moistness. It is a strange dichotomy, as a soft cake is usually moist, but this is not the case here. It is a little closer to a sponge cake than a true cupcake in that way. I do like the fact it isn't like a pound cake - ie, heavier and denser. Service is always fast. I like the kiosks and they will bring your order out in a matter of minutes. Venture to DC for a doctors appointment and on the way out the office, I saw someone walking down the hall with a Sprinkles bag. I'm new to the area and had never heard of them, but suspected it might be a cupcake shop. I looked them up immediately and decided to trek down the street. As for the cupcakes. They're very cute and they have a fair amount of flavors to choose from, like chocolate marshmallow, triple cinnamon, lemon blueberry, strawberry. I ordered a half dozen and it ran about $26. The cake itself was very moist. The icing was rich, but not overpowering. The cupcake is not crazy sweet, which we like. The ratio of cake to icing was perfect!
