I've tried nearly every cupcake on the menu with over 50+ flavors since the shop opened 15 years ago. The cupcakes are the perfect size, not too small or big and relatively cheap at $3.95. While the buttercream and cream cheese flavors are sickly sweet with a thick mound of frosting and the cake and cheesecake can be quite dense, the savory flavors like caramel and mocha and the fudge brownie cheesecakes are exceptionally good! This was our first time visiting this location. The shop was small but charming, with a cozy atmosphere. The service was adequate, but not particularly welcoming; there was no greeting upon entering. As the only customers at first, we found the environment quiet, with two other patrons arriving shortly after us. We placed our order, paid for the cupcakes, and left. There was little to no seating inside the shop. We sampled the cupcakes on the bench seating near the shop. We chose the carrot cake and red velvet varieties. Both cupcakes were enjoyable, with the standout feature being the cream cheese frosting--creamy, slightly tangy, and authentic. The carrot cake cupcake was a bit dry around the edges but moist in the center. It contained carrot pieces, yet differed from traditional carrot cakes, offering a more subtle flavor. My recommendations are any cheesecake flavor, the red velvet, and my favorite months for specialized cupcakes are February and October (for their red velvet flavors and their pumpkin!!). read more

The shop could easily be a 4* if not for the decline in quality which is too considerable to overlook. The decline is in their presentation, attention to detail, and overall quality. That said, these cupcakes are as good, if not better than your average bakery cupcake. Again, the 3* is because the cupcake quality once was arguably most competitive in the region. They do offer traditional flavors which are available on specific days of the week and seasonal flavors that are themed. If you want a specific traditional flavor it is best to arrive early before they sell out. The same goes for their seasonal flavors. Customer service is OK. Street parking does exist, however, considering this is a busy street the parking along the storefront is almost always occupied. There is garage parking in the area down the street from the bakery. I love cupcakes , however, through the years , this place has disappointed me. The service is good, no complaints, there but the shop is so small. It's always cramped.. The door can easily smack someone waiting on the inside! Their menu has expanded, and it would be nice if some of the menu items had a short description, so we don't have to keep asking the staff what's in this or that. The taste, they changed the recipe and it doesn't taste the same. The cupcakes taste more artificial and more like it came from a Betty Crocker cake mix. What chapped my @ was when my cupcakes were placed in their iconic pink box, and they were tilted. Like seriously? So yeah. Unless someone else is treating. It's a no for me. The owners of this bakery are pretty well known for being on a couple of television shows. They opened up in the early 2000s ('07 or '08 I think). This is another one of those must-visit businesses whenever we're back in DC. Heads up, you don't even have to go to DC because they will ship all across the country. A friend in DC had some shipped to me last year as a surprise. I'd mentioned how much I missed the cupcakes and a couple of days later they were at my door I'm rambling now. Time for the cake talk. The cupcakes are absolutely never dry. Even the types that are more dense still have a fresher taste than what you might get at other bakeries. This last time we were in town we were in for a conference and had a surprise birthday party for someone. I ordered cupcakes from a couple of DC bakeries. They were all amazing but the ones from here seemed to take first place. The dozen purchased from here included chocolate ganache, milk chocolate, chocolate 2 (whipped frosting), red velvet, and vanilla birthday. Each cupcake is like a delicate work of art, perfectly frosted and adorned with edible beading, flakes, fondant, or candy flowers. The ganache shines so perfectly on the chocolate cupcake. My first experience with Georgetown cupcakes was when my wifes best friend sent us a dozen to us where we lived in California to celebrate the birth of our first child 11 years ago. Fast forward to today and we live close by and were out with some friends and stepped in. The shop is little on the small side so I could see it getting crowded easily. The cupcake selection was extensive. So much so we spent a lot of time talking with the guy behind the counter regarding the difference between the 4 different types of chocolate cupcakes. We got a bunch and I sampled the Red Velvet, Key Lime and the Lavender Earl Grey. The Key Lime was my favorite flavor wise. Also the cupcakes were little on the small side compared to some of the other bakeries that we have been to in the area. I used to be a regular at the Georgetown Cupcakes in Boston before the pandemic. I was sad to see the business had downsized but was ecstatic to visit again during a trip to DC. We decided to go to the Bethesda location instead of the Georgetown location thinking the parking situation would be more favorable. Of course, the street was blocked off for an event taking place the next day. I decided to get a half dozen cupcakes, not knowing the next time I'd be able to make it back to either location. I ordered two vanilla2, a vanilla birthday, a red velvet, a chocolate ganache, and a salted caramel. I couldn't quite remember which vanilla was my favorite but I went with my gut and got two of the cream cheese icing variety. I remembered enjoying the other flavors before and went out on a limb to try the salted caramel. The cupcakes were good. However, they did not quite rise to the level of deliciousness I remembered. And the chocolate ganache and the salted caramel were completely forgettable. In all fairness, it is hard to compete with a memory and something as simple as a change in elevation can affect baking results. I shared these cupcakes with first time Georgetown customers and they were very impressed. Overall, I'd give the vanillas and the red velvet 5 stars as they still rose above the quality of cupcake you can find at other bakeries and I'd be willing to try other flavors. read more

First, I've been going to GC before we could imagine having a store in Bethesda, even before we could imagine placing pick up orders. I'm from the time when we had to stand in 3 mile long line on any given day to get inside the tiny store. Despite having a location so much closer to me and no more long lines I still won't recommend this place anymore. Before I list reasons I should also mention that I went there around 11am on a Sunday and it was empty. The college me would have died of happiness walking into an empty store. The much older me was meh. 1. I have been placing birthday cupcake order with them for years. The process used to be fun but now it's tedious. Look for clip art. Send it to them. They won't even bother coming up with any writing for you, you'll have to get photoshop to do that for you. Once they receive the order there will be a lot of back and forth. 2. The pic quality is C R A P. Absolutely bad. If Georgetown wasn't such a big name my guests would have thought I had bought them at Safeway or something. I didn't mind in the past but with each passing year their print quality seems to be declining. 3. The impersonal process. Halfway through the communication the person responding to my emails changed. I had to constantly explain and reexplain, while I was inflight too. I guess scrolling back to the top of the email thread was too much work for them. I was ready to cancel my order. 4. I don't remember the last time my cupcake didn't crumble. I get it, they are mass produced. They aren't fresh. But they shouldn't feel dry and shouldn't crumble. 5. The staff could not have been more uninterested. Very absentminded girl at checkout who literally chatted with her associate while checking me out the entire time. I don't think it's worth the hype anymore. So if you order online the day prior you won't have to wait in line. They have set flavors that are available all the time, monthly flavors and daily flavors.
