Celebrated my husband's 90th birthday at a private party this past Saturday. The venue was FOGO de CHAO in No. Bethesda, MD. Every detail was tended to perfectly. And then there was the Cake! I did a classic chocolate birthday cake which delivered everything you'd hope for in a celebratory dessert. The cake was rich and moist with a deep cocoa flavor that isn't overly sweet. This cakeshop turned out to be a first-class surprise in our own neighborhood, one I discovered in 2024 after 9 years of searching. Beautiful confections that taste even better than they look. I have not found white/yellow cake--birthday cake, celebration cakes that match this quality--in the whole of the DMV, and I may be able to safely extend that claim through the mid-Atlantic. The buttercream is the old-fashioned, less slippery type--the frosting roses and ornate decorations of my childhood in New York City. The almond cake is exquisite (vanilla and strawberry the two others we have sampled, also very good). This shop competes with those beloved New England bakeries of the second half of the twentieth century--now impossibly rare--relying on skills and art carried over from European beginnings. These traditions are all but lost as we reach the second quarter of the 21st century. Every cake we have ordered from Creative Cakes for landmark birthdays, a memorial meal, and Bloomsday (the anniversary of the publication of James Joyce's great novel Ulysses) , exceeded expectations. One cake was "Lambeth Style" (photo of the turquoise cake with lavender festoons and rosettes) --these cakes were popular in the Victorian era, and astonishingly, Creative Cakes is able to recreate them! Although a portion of these cakes may safely be frozen for later consumption, we never manage to save more than a slice or two, and that preserving often involves a fierce battle of wills. I have heard of people who buy a tub of the frosting from Creative Cakes to cheer themselves up when they are blue--I am sure that would offer comfort in the form of a massive sugar rush--but I am too much a fan of the design process with the bakers themselves--of matching the image in one's mind with the cake these ladies can make for you. I recommend starting out with a trial by cupcake (the cupcakes are only $4 each, mini-versions of the full-size cakes), and calling on this bakery for special occasions. In our experience it has been worth paying that little bit extra for customizing as the bakers will take extreme care in meeting your tastes, vision, and aesthetic. If you live in Silver Spring, with this bakery on your back doorstep, you are seriously lucky!!! read more

When I began to look a bakery to create a special design for my son's groom cake, I scoured companies around DC. Then, I found Creative Cakes, and began a dialogue with Lauren who, after an initial conversation, took my concept and ran with it. Entitled "Harry's Game of Life," Lauren and Creative Cakes detailed my son's life in the form of a colorful board game that featured a center chocolate mold of his cat wearing his alma mater's sweatshirt. I did not see the cake until it was delivered to the welcome party venue, but when every member of the kitchen staff has gathered around just to marvel at a cake, you know it is a winner. Not only was it exquisitely decorated, it was delicious. My son is 'basic' in his taste so it was simply "plain cake and plain icing," but it was melt-in-your-mouth-get-a-second-slice-good! Having said all that, the most important element of the cake was the surprise and delight that my son and his soon-to-be-wife had when it was revealed.
