Dealing with the staff was a long series of micro aggressions. I'm a pretty nice guy and overall used to micro aggressions, so I paid it no mind. I paid $150 for a cake the size of a cupcake. Given the outrageous price, I thought scheduling a tasting was only natural. I may have been alone in this sentiment, because the young lady I was speaking to seem to be under the impression that $150 spent should maintain some element of surprise. After awhile she did agree, reluctantly to schedule a to-go tasting for the coming Saturday, at 2 pm. When I arrived, no one was there, and apparently it was my fault that there was no tasting on the books. Here's the kicker. The cake was only about $65 (being generous here) cute, and about $15 in size. And it was gross. Their coconut pineapple "filling" was lost to sugar, sugar, and more sugar. Think Walmart taste and target decor. I am afraid to tell the birthday boy how much money I was cheated out of. I guess on some level I'm trying to avoid putting a sour taste in his mouth, only in this case is the cakes sweetness preferred, although unbearable, gritty, and ultimately majorly disappointing. I asked Creative Cakes to create an awesome cake for my niece's baby shower with the theme of Jungle animals. I gave them a copy of the invitation with all the baby jungle animals as a reference. The cake produced by their artists was absolutely outstanding, taking all of my suggestions as a starting point and making it so much better. The best part was the 3D giraffe lounging on top of the cake with an adorable expression on its face. All of the guests oohed and aahed over the cake. But then, how does the cake taste? I'm pretty new in town and looking for my new go-to bakery. A friend suggested Creative Cakes and so... here I am with a review! I sent an example of the cake I wanted and they gave me exactly what I wanted. I went with a vanilla cake with fresh strawberries since they don't offer a strawberry cake. Delicious. The only reason I didn't give five stars is because they wrote, "Happy 33th Birthday Felicia." Not 33rd, but 33th... So that was embarrassing, but I just laughed it off. When you pay a decent amount of money for a cake, you expect it to be right... And so that wasn't. Lol The service was fine. I'm sure they're very busy, but they could be a bit warmer in their e-mails and phone voices. My brother had a custom cake made for our little bro's birthday that resembled his favorite drink: a sidecar. It looked aamaazing! Our little bro does competitive heavy weight lifting so the exterior of the cake resembled a stack of weights. The flavor of the cake was very strong, it had been drenched in Grand Marnier after all. The frosting in between had citrusy essence to it which really complemented the alcohol drenched cake deliciously. The fondant looked so smooth and soo good and didn't pose any difficulty in a fridge overnight. The physical cake sat on a base which sat on a sheet of flexible styrofoam inside of cardboard box which gave stability while we drove the cake home. My family does a handful of customers cake orders a year for our loved ones and Creative Cake hasn't failed us yet. read more

I'm sorry but the one star is simply because they were open during this Coronavirus craziness. The cake was awful to the point of being inedible. I requested a custom cake with a design of a kpop musical group ---a very simple cake & design. First of all it cost an astronomical $105 for a 9 inch cake which is beyond the pale . But that's not even the worst part---the cake itself was absolutely awful. The outer layer was basically rubber and the cake was worse than anything you'd get at Safeway! While we were there waiting for the cake to be brought out we ordered 4 cupcakes one of which was a red-velvet. Can you believe that the red velvet cupcake did not come with cream cheese frosting? How is this even possible? Just laced with the worst vanilla buttercream frosting you can ever imagine. The cake was for a 13 yr old "Quaranteen"s birthday. It was bad enough that she had to have her birthday in isolation but the atrocious cake did nothing to perk our flagging spirits. I am so happy with my daughters' baptism cake from Creative Cakes. I live in CA and planned an entire baptism to be held in DC where I used to live. I went by reviews and pictures and I am so pleased I chose Creative Cakes. The owner is very professional, I sent her 2-3 pictures of cakes I liked and we talked on the phone. Happy with the final result but not the process. We came here to get our daughter's first birthday cake. The place is in a warehouse district and the showroom is just a dingy room - not inviting at all. The customer service was awful - the woman who "helped" us answered all our questions with a snarky attitude. For example, I asked her whether they use different ingredients for the baby's cake, and she responded "why would we do that?" like it was the most idiotic question she'd ever heard. We paid $150 for a 10" round cake with buttercream icing and about $7 for a matching cupcake for the baby. It was on the high end given that we weren't asking for anything that required too much artistry (just rosettes) but the end result was beautiful. So would I go back? Yes, but next time I won't go in expecting anything from the service and will come with a clear idea of what I want. P.S. They got the flavor of the big cake wrong. read more

Camren ruined my daughters cake and left it as it was when she could've easily fixed all of her mistakes. She did an extremely lazy job on the polka dots, Sesame Street sign and the chocolate chip cookies (those are embarrassing to even look at) not only that but she seriously smeared glue all over my daughters birthday cake. That is my biggest issue. The glue got all over the cake and Carmen WIPED IT ALL OVER THE CAKE instead of starting over when she noticed she screwed up. Glue was oozing out of the polka dots, making the colors bleed. I paid $225 for a cake that looks like it was done by 10 year old. This is where we got the wedding cake for our big day. Certainly not Cakelove, but decent as far as wedding cake. Creative Cakes offers eleven "standard" flavors of cakes, and - in addition- five specialty flavors that are fifty cents per serving more. If you invite more than 100 people to your wedding, they offer sheet cakes (on top of an ordered tiered cake) for only 75 cents per serving that match the cake and icing flavor. Creative Cakes seems to have agreements with every major (and not so major) hotel in D.C., VA, and MD so if you are getting married in a hotel like we did, it is no brainer to go with them. They hold free tastings once a month at their "store." They also offer cakes for a variety of occasions including birthdays, showers, groom cakes and more. Custom designs, shaped cakes and wedding cakes are their specialties - these are truly one-of-a-kind artisanal cakes made by artists using fondant, sugar, etc. Pricing is very fair - very inexpensive by comparison to other places in DC. They will work with you to come up with a custom design based on your ideas. I picked up a cake that a friend had ordered for a 30th birthday and it was gorgeous. I ordered a cake here for a friend's baby shower and after just crushing a leftover piece, I realized I should write a review. After many days of being overwhelmed by cake designs on Pinterest and other internet environs, I decided on a simple square sheet cake with fondant polka dots with basic filling and buttercream icing. Once I decided (about 3-4 weeks in advance), I called and placed the order and paid for it over the phone - no fuss, no muss. I'll be frank - I'm not a cake connoisseur, so I was really surprised by the cost of a simple design. At any rate, it looked nice, tasted good and was ready on time. Mission complete. One thing I wish they'd do is send a confirmation or receipt after making an order, or do a reminder call as the date approaches. I didn't have time to call and confirm the order would be ready the day before pickup, so when I arrived to pick it up, all I could do was hope they hadn't forgotten about it. A simple communication to close the loop with customers would probably go a long way. read more

When I began wedding cake shopping, I was shocked at the prices. Relatively speaking, although Creative Cake's price were high, compared to other bakeries, it was reasonable. I adored the Calla lily design & it worked well with my wedding colors. I was very impressed with the sequins & was sold on that immediately. Two of the layers were carrot & the middle was German chocolate with the icing as a filling. They were both quite good. However, I was disappointed that a bakery of this caliber did not use the lighter chocolate for the actual cake rather than ordinary dark chocolate. To me, the lighter chocolate is essential to the German Chocolate Cake. Other than that, I was pleased with the cake & the service. The bakery delivered the cake before I arrived at the wedding venue, so I was quite pleased because that was one less thing to be concerned about on my wedding day. I was freaking out because I could not find a decent "cakery" in DC! (Is that a word? I don't want a bakery. I just want cakes!) I was chairing for my fraternity's 60th anniversary. So, I went to bakeries in the DC areas and they only had like 5 cakes to choose from and each cake can only feed like up to 20 people. I needed a cake that could feed at least 100 people. Somehow, I found Creative Cakes. However, I wasn't happy that I had to travel out to Silver Spring. But with no choice, I went. However, I lucked out because I came on a Sunday that Creative Cakes just happened to have their monthly day of tasting. O. M. F. G. Their cakes are sinfully delicious! So many different flavors yet I could only select two. What I can remember, they had butterum, lemon, chocolate & vanilla marble, red velvet, mandarian orange, carrot, banana and much more. Anyways, I got the cake for my fraternity's anniversary. Everyone loved it. Creative Cakes did a fantastic job on the cake! So, why the 4 stars instead of 5? First of all, my frat's event was on a Saturday. CC told me that they don't deliver on Saturdays. So, the cake was delivered on Friday. Secondly, when they delivered my cake, it was in a box but with no cover. It was drizzling outside. I wished they had told me before that there would be no top cover when it was delivered. Mind you, I paid $300 dollars for a 1/2 & a 3/4 sheet. They simply explained that it was a condensation reason for not covering the top. Lastly, a photo scan is not ideal, especially if you have to wait the next day to show off the cake. The scan will fade slightly. Regardless, the cake should taste good and it indeed tasted heavenly! read more

My son and his wife had a cake delivered to us for our wedding anniversary. The cake was delivered and left on our porch in the plastic cake container only. Typically when we receive food from restaurants, the items are placed in a bag. The cake container was in contact with the porch which definitely isn't the most sanitary way to deliver food. The cake itself looked very nice, but the frosting was awful. It was not buttercream frosting. We had to scrape it off because it was greasy like Crisco frosting. We were able to salvage it by scraping off the frosting and re-frosting it with a homemade cream cheese icing and homemade guava filling. Our wedding venue (The City Club of Washington) had a contract with Creative Cakes, so we went with them for our wedding cake. The cake itself wasn't a huge budget priority for my now-husband and me, so it was nice to not have to think about which bakery to use for our wedding. Fortunately, Anne Lutz made our tasting and overall experience very easy and simple. The bakery is located in a small industrial park, but the interior of the bakery is welcoming and cute. We had a Saturday morning private appointment (don't go for the open house, get an actual appt) with Anne, who walked us through the basic cake our contract allotted, and we sampled ourselves silly with the different cake flavors. We were allowed to choose three flavors, one per layer, and went with chocolate/vanilla marble, butter rum (SO good), and chocolate. I like that their buttercream is an American-style buttercream and is actually tasty, not cloyingly sweet or gritty like many wedding cakes I've tried at other weddings. Anne integrated ribbon along the bottom border of each layer to match our color scheme, and was helpful in making sure it didn't "bleed" onto the frosting. She also helped us to "upgrade" our frosting filling from the standard vanilla buttercream to a fudge-y buttercream, and it ended up being only $75, but it totally elevated the cake, so it was $75 very well spent. The top of our cake had plenty of room for the custom cake topping I ordered from Etsy, and Creative Cakes delivered the cake on-time and exactly as promised, and they were a joy to work with. read more

I was repeatedly put on hold, and when they would come back it was as if they forgot we had been talking and we would start the whole conversation over again. I was eventually transferred to someone for a "quote" but, yet again, still had to re-explain the whole cake. For reference, I wanted an 8 inch birthday cake with a school seal on top. Aside from their insistence I get a giant sheet cake to feed up to 50 and drive around delivering pieces to friends (during COVID?) their inability to give me consistent service or listen to my order became mind numbing. The quote of $350 for an 8in birthday cake was a bridge too far. It's unfortunate. Several years ago I had a great experience ordering a cake for my husband's birthday. Creative Cakes at that time was highly collaborative and delivered. Family time is precious these days so in order to celebrate with loved ones, we ordered cakes for two, basically separate, occasions that needed to look cohesive, yet have different themes. The "Swampy Dagobah" (Star Wars) birthday cake was delicious, and featured so much amazing detail I actually photographed the back of the cake to remember the texture of Luke and Yoda's clothes and the plants in the swamp. Our Acorns and Roses anniversary cake had three flavors- all delicious- and was elegant and refined yet natural-looking enough that we could photograph it next to the swamp cake and it all worked! DO NOT USE CREATIVE CAKES, TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE!!!! We ordered our wedding cake (which was so overpriced) from here and will never be getting anything from them again. When we placed the order, I let Randy (the owner) know that I was thinking about having blue frosting on our wedding cake (to match my reception outfit) and never once did she say that dying the frosting a blue color would leave a stain on people's mouths, lips and tongue after eating the cake. This is something that an experienced cake baker should have let us know about and advise us accordingly. I was aware that dye would be used but I had no prior experience ordering a cake this color would leave a stain. It was so so so disappointing at our wedding to have our family and friends come up to my husband and I with blue mouths and lips while our photographer was taking photos. All the photos were ruined. We spent so much money on our wedding (AND THIS CAKE) and this was a small detail but it basically ruined the photos at the reception. All of this could have been avoided if Randi had the sense to tell us to choose a different color (we totally would have taken her advice and chosen not to use dye) When I called to let her know what happened, she was completely unapologetic and said "Ya, of course, the dye will stain" and proceeded to tell me that I should have laughed about it basically saying it was not a big deal and this would have happened if we had lollipops or popsicles. This was not some birthday party, this was our WEDDING, that we spent over a year planning, so much time and energy and money was spent. It was not some party in a backyard on a hot summer day with popsicles, it was an elegant affair in a venue that cost a lot of money and to tell me to laugh about it was ridiculous. Furthermore, she offered me cupcakes as compensation for her huge mistake. When I asked for a partial refund, she was very rude and said no. I said I would be posting a bad review, she hung up on me. I would highly advise not to order from this overpriced bakery where they have no common decency or sense to advise their customers and are completely unsympathetic and unapologetic for their mistakes and for ruining our photos. My friends, family and I have used Creative Cakes for several years so I know they can be a little pricey. But I wanted to make sure that the final product was nice, so weeks in advance of my event, I made a reservation and was required to pay the total (not a deposit) to have two cakes made - one for my dad's 85th b-day, and the other for my uncle's 83rd b-day. We were having a joint celebration for the two of them. On the Monday before the Saturday event, I called to cancel my uncle's cake; he had been taken ill over the weekend and was unable to travel from Mississippi to the party. When I asked to cancel his cake, I was told that I could only have a store credit that would be available to me "forever." Hmmm...neither the cake nor the decoration has been made, and we're talking about an 83 year old who is ill. "Non-negotiable policy," you say? Okay. Fine. Unfortunately, if that's your policy, please take my "credit" and apply it to the remaining cake for my Dad. Spruce it up a little more, and then we'll be square since I won't need to keep my "forever" credit because neither me, my friends or family will be using you again. The "golf design" they created for my dad's cake was fine, and the cake was good. But for around $250 (cake for about 25), I guess I expected something other than just frosting grass (I've done THAT effect w/a snipped ziplock bag), some of the rice krispies treats molded golf balls, and a leaning putter. I've used 4 Corners bakery in Silver Spring for last minute orders, and their cakes are also very tasty, and they'll also work with you to create a great design. Their cakes are also 50-75% less, and I think their buttercream is superior (less of a chemical taste). One more note: it would be helpful if Creative Cakes gave folks a heads up about the "digestive after-effects" they might experience if their cake's frosting contains the grass green food coloring. Not to be too detailed, but seeing certain types of bodily "waste" in a bright grass green color can be a little bit of a shock. read more

I placed an order with Creative Cakes for a law school graduation cake a week ahead of my party after the baker I originally booked stopped answering my emails. Creative Cakes immediately responded to my email via phone call, took down detailed notes about what I desired to have as a graduation cake, and delivered one of the most delicious and beautiful graduation cakes I could have asked for.
