Okay to say I was disappointed is a understatement. I ordered a cake for my boyfriends party...they nailed the design down...I wanted a caricature cake and that's what I got. For $165....I expected to the cake (red velvet) to taste like something....it was completely bland...it didn't taste like red velvet, it was pretty tasteless. My only saving grace was my boyfriend is not picky (thank god) and he and his friends were too drunk to realize anything was amiss. My friends on the other hand thought I was foolish for ordering a $165 cake in the first place. Bottom line if you want a pretty tasteless cake....creative cakes is the place to go. I would not recommend Creative Cakes. I used them for several years and in their heydey, they had great customer service. But in the past month, I know of two negative experiences. Last month, they misspelled my sister's name on her bridal shower cake. Obviously we couldn't serve her a faulty cake, so we had to do an emergency run to the grocery store to try to buy icing to fix it--it ended up looking tacky. The worst part was that they had a nasty attitude about it, instead of being more apologetic--after all, it was THEIR mistake and the cake was not free. In addition, beware of their "store policies" and make sure to ask for a copy in writing. For example, if you merely want to increase the size of your cake several days before your event, they try to charge you for a whole second cake. In addition, if you cancel an order several days beforehand, they want to keep half of your money. Of course, you don't learn about these policies until AFTER there is a dispute. Again, the manager was rude on the phone and very dismissive. They act like you're getting the cake for free as opposed to being a paying customer. read more

Creative Cakes tugs a couple heartstrings in our household. Randi and her amazing team created our stunning wedding cake that was the pinnacle at our reception. As the winners of Cake Hunters, we were so thrilled that Creative Cakes was one of the bakeries we got to select from. Randi and her team worked with us to create a custom flavor, the s'mores flavor you see on the menu today, and the intricacy and detail of our cake were magnificent. Our wedding guests are still in awe of it to this day. But, beyond the glamour and beauty, Randi and her staff are genuinely kind and spend time to work with their customers to ensure the final product is spectacular and to your liking. For our most recent order, we ordered our son's second birthday cake and all I had to do was explain my vision to Randi and she got what I wanted immediately. The flavor was phenomenal and all of our guests absolutely loved it! I highly recommend Creative Cakes to anyone any day. Creative Cakes made our wedding cake for our June 2012 wedding. The cake was absolutely delicious and looked fantastic. We also had a custom groom's cake made, asking for a design that they'd never heard of - we emailed them the picture and it came out perfectly. One piece of advice: it was really helpful to go to one of their open houses, where you can sample many of the flavors of cakes (without the pressure of a one-on-one session). If you go to an open house, however, it would be better to order the cake later - we felt a little rushed and there was standing-room only for people waiting to order cakes. read more

This November my husband went back and had them replicate our top tier because we didn't preserve it right and were out of the country for our first anniversary. It was ridiculously dry. We ate it the same day we picked it up. I was so disappointed. While I know that a top tier is not the same type of business as an entire wedding cake or extravagant birthday cake, I fully expected them to produce our cake with the same quality they do their other work. I will never bring my business here again. They quoted me $80.00 for this cake. I asked for a "Frozen" theme cake replacing the main character's face with the birthday girl's face. At the tasting, our consultant was very helpful and assisted us in our baking education to understand all of the different styles and options to choose when customizing a cake. We recently had a "Creative Cakes" cake at a friend's birthday party, and WOW! It was moist, delicious, beautifully decorated, and was just one of those "ok, one bite" after another experiences!!! I didn't realize it was Randi's business, and what fun, because she was one of my FIRST employers many years ago at a family-owned catering company. I ordered a cake for my grandson a few weeks ago. The cake was beautifully created, delicious, and customer service was great, which is what I told them on 25 Sept. However, last week, I ordered another cake for my grand daughter and my daughter in law picked it up yesterday. She informed the lady at the counter the name was spelled incorrectly. The lady said she did not have what she needed to fix the name. My daughter in law took the cake and left ($150 was paid for in advance). I called this morning and spoke with the owner. She was very defensive and asked why did we leave with the cake. I explained to her why. In not so many words, she accused my daughter in law of lying. At the end of the conversation, which was cordial, while I saying good-bye, she slammed the phone down. I gave 3 stars because of the poor customer service phone conversation with the owner. We wanted a beautiful cake that tasted better than Duncan Hines. We were very articulate in describing the specific decoration for our cake. We asked for very standard items and provided multiple photos. Nothing out of the ordinary. Believe me, we paid extra $$$ for our specific instructions. Apparently, we were not specific enough because the decorations did not turn out how we had discussed. We were too busy with other details of our celebration to make a huff about the mistakes on the cake. We decided to "not sweat the small stuff" the cake looked okay, it just wasn't what we asked for and happily shelled out more cash for... It was "fine" but not what We spent 2 hours designing. The reason I'm writing this 2 star review is because that the cake ended up tasting only so-so. Most slices were not finished. Not one guest commented that the cake was good. My immediate family said the cake "wasn't that good". Personally and honestly, my Duncan Hines cakes from a box taste better than the cake made by Creative cakes. I have never ordered a cake from a high end bakery before, and I had no idea what to expect. I am a designer with crazy attention to detail, and wanted to match a logo for my husband's birthday party theme. The cake design turned out perfectly, and they made it even more creative! Randi was very nice and helpful when it came to what type of cake to order, and how to make the design/cake affordable. If you have time before your event to go to an open house to see and taste the different types of cakes, it will probably be helpful. I did not have any lead time, but you can never go wrong with chocolate! The cake turned out amazing, and really added to the decor of the party. This was our third cake order over the course of many years. Of all the things we needed to plan, we thought for sure the cake would at least meet or even exceed expectations. Our past experiences had been excellent. Not this time. The orange cake was dry, tasteless and not as good as one we could have made ourselves from a box picked up last minute at the grocery store. The butter cream icing was too sweet, had no character and was also pretty dry. More than disappointed, we were embarrassed to serve it to the large group of friends and family gathered for a very important 86th birthday party. What a shame. We ordered a red velvet cake from Creative Cakes for my fiancée's birthday. We have had cakes from there in the past, and they were excellent, so we were looking forward to this one. Although the icing was very good, the cake itself was dry and tasteless. The five people sharing the cake all agreed that an ingredient must have accidentally been left out of the recipe or that something went wrong when the cake was baked. When we told Creative Cakes about this, we were shocked by the response we received. My fiancée initially spoke with them over the phone. She was told that red velvet cake is not supposed to be a chocolate cake (which we already knew) and that they were sorry if we didn't hear what we wanted to hear. We decided to take the cake back to the shop, and when the Creative Cakes staff tasted it, they reported that it tasted as it should. They suggested that the problem was either that we had waited too long to eat it (in fact, we picked it up the day before) or that we served it too cold (in fact, it was served at room temperature). Rather than accept that her cake was a disappointment, the woman we met tried to blame us, her customers, for failing to appreciate the product. Only when I suggested that we would not consider Creative Cakes for our wedding cake did her tone change slightly. At that point, she became a bit more open to rectifying things, although she did not propose any particular way to do that. The entire process has made us decide to avoid using Creative Cakes for any events in the future. It is clear that they are interested only in customers who are going to be spending a lot. Even in those cases, I doubt that their service or product is worth the money or trouble. For our wedding, we do not want a dry, bland cake like the one we received for my fiancée's birthday, and we do not want to work with a vendor like Creative Cakes whose customer relations are as poor as what we experienced today. read more

I ordered a cake for my medical school graduation (kind of a big deal). The person I talked to on the phone during the ordering process was very short and didn't let me fully explain what I wanted. My red velvet cake was extremely dry and flavorless, I had a fondant stethoscope on it which appeared that it had broken and was patched up. The text writing was not what I requested and was beginning to smear. For $210 I expected MUCH more, or at least some flavor! read more

This was by far the worst vendor we worked with during our wedding. The company was recommended by the restaurant we used. We met with representatives from the company several times before ordering the cake and, due to the unique nature of our cake, expressed our nervousness over the cake choice. The vendors reassured us that we were in excellent hands and that everything would work out with the cake color and construction. In addition, we asked the cake vendor about cake ribbon which does not absorb oil and avoids color changes to the ribbon (we had been told about this by another recent bride, who used such a ribbon). The vendor told us there was no such thing and that we would be okay if we purchased ribbon for the cake that was a few shades lighter than what we wanted so that when the oil was absorbed, the color would be what we wanted. In the end, we were severely disappointed in our cake. While the taste was excellent, the outside appearance was horrendous! The cake was the wrong color (a neon blue instead of a barely-noticeable ice blue, and we had provided them a swatch of fabric in the desired ice blue); it was of very poor quality construction, with blobs of piping at the base of the ribbon and uneven icing; and the ribbon on the cake, which was supposed to be brown, had absorbed so much oil that it looked black. We were mortified by the 3-foot monstrosity that sat in the middle of our wedding reception. The cake is immortalized in both the photographer's pictures and in those taken by our guests. We are going to ask the photographer to only show the cake in black and white in our wedding album so that at the very least we do not have to look at the color. To add insult to injury, when we called the company to complain and ask for a partial refund, the owner was unwilling to compromise and accused us of trying to extort money from them! It was bad enough that when we called, the vendor knew immediately what cake we were calling to complain about, but to be insulted on top of it really "took the cake". I would never recommend this vendor to anyone. They are all about making a quick buck and getting over on poor couples. They promise things and because of the myriad of salespeople you deal with, no one has any idea of what the final product should look like! Don't waste your money here. Their pictures look awesome and I would have loved to work with them, but they were very unaccommodating to me and very suspect with their "prices." I sent them an email from their web page asking about the price of a very specific cake they had listed recognizing that anything I got back would be an estimate due. They responded back they do not give pricing by email or in writing. Well, that is somewhat suspect. Why not? Do you give different prices to different people? I was asking about a very specific cake that you listed that you sold. I also informed them I do not have my cell phone on me during the day due to my job function so I could only communicate via email. I told them I recognized I may only get an estimate (are we talking 100 range, 200 range, 500 range, etc). They wrote back essentially saying the same thing, no estimate over the phone. I followed up again reminding them I do not have a phone on me during the day so if they could make an exception. NO RESPONSE. Okay, moving on to the next cake person for my party. Their customer service is obviously lacking and I find it HIGHLY SUSPECT when a business will not give a price QUOTE via in writing. read more

They were very willing to look at several pics and combine my vision into a one tiered square wedding cake. My guests were in awe and couldn't say enough good things. My husband ordered a cake for my graduation from Creative Cakes. The price was insane $115 ($50 for a small round cake and $65 for the "artist" fee). There was nothing fancy about the way the cake was decorated. The cake itself was dry and tasteless (chocolate) and the icing (vanilla buttercream) was overly sweet and gritty. I couldn't believe how much this cake cost when my husband told me and it was DEFINITELY not worth the price. Save your money and get a Costco cake or even make a Duncan Hines cake mix....it would be a lot cheaper and taste so much better. read more

After reading such great reviews about Creative Cakes on their website,my fiancé and I decided to schedule a cake tasting for our upcoming wedding. As excited as we were when we got to the establishment, the service upon walking through the door was very poor. Randi, whom I assume is the baker was not very customer friendly, or maybe it was just to us. She gave us about 5 books to look through, and sat there without really engaging in any type of conversation. I didn't get the feeling that she wanted our business, her attitude was VERY blah for lack of a better word. Long story short we left the bakery with the samples that she insisted we take, but didn't even offer them to us while we were seated at the table...we took it upon ourselves to taste the cake and ask any questions we had. I was so thrown off by the experience and her lack of enthusiasm about a couple wanting to have their wedding cake made there. Thank God we had two other bakeries to visit, Kake Korner which I HIGHLY recommend for A+ service and great cakes, also Cake Plus in Laurel MD. I never write reviews, but I hope this helps someone out...when you're looking to spend your money you should have A+ service in all aspects! read more

I purchased a chocolate cake for a graduation party last month. I would describe myself as a cake snob which is why I was willing to pay $100 for a small cake. Unfortunately, a Costco cake would have been better than what I received. While the cake looked okay the taste left much to be desired. I prefer a rich, moist, dense cake and I received the exact opposite. And the "buttercream" frosting was strange. It was devoid of flavor and left a waxy coating in your mouth as though it contained something pretending to be butter. Needless to say I won't be back and I was very disappointed. read more

I purchased some regular sized cupcakes from this so called bakery a few weeks ago. They were not worth the money I spent on them. The cupcakes themselves were small and they felt unusually cold, like they had just been taken out of the freezer. They tasted like something I could've bought at Giant for much less. we used creative cakes for many years because it is convienent to my home. My sister purchased her wedding cake here. My daughter purchased many cupcakes here for parties. I have bought many many cakes from them over the years and they have all been good. until, recently we purchased a birthday speciality cake with a charater on top for my grand daughter that cost $380.00. we sent them a picture of what we wanted and they said they could do it. we trusted them. when we got the cake the charater did not look anything like the picture we sent, but we had to take the cake because it was the day of the party. on the day of the party I tried a piece of the cake and it was very dry. That monday I called the owner Randi, to let her know about the above and she was very rude to me and to my daughter. she did not want to accomadate us in any way, but ended up giving us $50.00 of the $380.00 we paid. we will not use them again and i certainly will not recommend them to anyone, and will talk about this for years to come. especially how rude she was. just know your business is word of mounth. their are thousands of very good bakeries in this metro area... i will use someone else from now on... read more

Creative Cakes baked a cake with fancy shoes, purses, lipsticks, etc. for my 30th birthday. It was enjoyed by all and because of that I decided to purchase specialty cupcakes as a gift for a birthday party. Placing the order was seamless and my wait to pick up the cupcakes wasn't bad either. However, after arriving at my destination I noticed one of the ornaments falling apart and one of the straps on the purse ornament was missing. I immediately called to find out what could be done because as a professional planner I couldn't present a product like this to anyone. To my dismay, I was told to just push them back together or place some icing between the pieces to reassemble or return to the store and they would fix them! I explained to the customer service representative that I would not be able to make it by noon (which is when the store closes on Saturdays). The representative was less than helpful and said to me "well what would you like us to do then ma'am," almost as if I was bothering her by trying to find the best option for fixing cupcakes. Needless to say I had to "fix" the cupcakes myself. After all of the hassle of putting together the ornaments that had fallen into multiple pieces, I knew they had to taste great! NOT AT ALL!!!! I was highly disappointed. In the past I have purchased great cupcakes at Red Velvet in the Penn Quarters neighborhood of DC and Georgetown cupcakes for the same price and people are usually fighting over which and how many cupcakes they get. The majority of the cupcakes remained untouched and subsequently was thrown in the trash. I called Creative Cakes to tell them of my disappointing experience and was offered a refund just shy of half the full amount. As a professional event planner in the DC area I will not use Creative Cakes again nor would I recommend them. read more

I ordered a birthday cake from Creative cakes and was not happy with any part of the experience. I work near the bakery so instead of calling I decided to stop by. That should have been the first warning sign. The parking lot was filled with garbage and the building itself looked run down and dirty. Once I got inside it was no better. I was "greeted" by the owner Randi who was wearing an outfit that perfectly matched the condition of the bakery, dirty. I started asking her about cake options and she seemed more interested in her cell phone than me. I went ahead and ordered a cake, because of all the positive reviews I had read. Well, let me tell you, big mistake! It was a chocolate cake that tasted like it came out of a box. The icing was super sweet, and probably came out of a bucket. For the $150 price tag I paid for my cake, I was hoping to get something better than a grocery store quality cake. If you need a cake, save yourself some money, and go to Giant instead! read more
