Got the Peruvian espresso here based on the barista's recommendation, and it's the smoothest espresso I've had in a while. Flavor of the caramel in the caramel latte wasn't very strong, but you could appreciate the espresso + milk combo. We sat near where they roast the coffee beans, which was cool to watch. The benches are comfortable. There aren't a lot of food options: some packaged (sandwiches) and a few pastries, but pastries run out fast. Oh my gosh the staffs here were so amazing. I was killing time while my husband was touring Still Austin and they were so welcoming. My kids and I ordered teas and their sparkling Gatorade and they even went out of their way to make vanilla caramel milk for my daughter. We also got some of their food and I recommend their brisket kolache (that was on point). The place roasted their own coffee beans and it is bike themed. read more

Our drinks were good but the staff was not the friendliest. I had an iced dirty chai and my husband had a beer. From the minute we walked in it felt like there were wanting to close or something, just not very welcoming at all, we checked the hours and it wasn't near closing time. This place has a great idea and concept but didn't have the best vibe today! At one point my husband accidentally knocked over his glass which had a little beer left in it, and the staff came of an addressed it immediately, but sprayed us with the cleaning spray as well, it was very rude! One of my favorite coffee spots in south Austin! Fantastic art on the walls (inside and outside), the coffee is always good, great selection of taps (including non-alcoholic options) and friendly staff. They carry pastries from Sour Duck Market. The Internet is free but it is pretty spotty when sitting outside unfortunately. Only downside? The ashtrays on the outdoor terrasse picnic tables invite smokers to stay for a smoke there. So if you like fresh air, the outdoor patio may or may not be a place where you want to hangout depending on the crowd and the direction the wind is blowing. Came for the monthly graffiti battle only to find out that we had missed it the week before (it had been a week early). We decided to stay for a drink, but were disappointed that there seemed to be no food options, and drink options felt pretty limited. We ordered iced teas and sat in the outdoor area. The outdoor area is lined by walls with graffiti art - which was quite creative and impressive. Other than expanding limited options for food/drink, I would just ask that they be a little better/more proactive in advertising getting word out about their events! read more

On top of all this, they have vegan breakfast tacos and yes they are extremely delicious. Wife and I found this cool spot while looking on Yelp! It's on the Southside of Austin among industrial complexes with an un-assuming outside facade. Inside, is an old school funk vibe lined with rustic tables an old school coffee roaster. There is an uncovered little patio adjacent to the building if you're feeling like some fresh Texas air. Place was empty, but it was a Tuesday around 2 pm, but I'm sure it fills after work hours. Coffee is served here, (but today only cold brew coffee due to the Austin water ordinance) and local beers. Not sure if beer is brewed here, but there is no shortage of beers. If you're feeling the munchies, there are offerings of panini's and sandwiches. It's a great place to come and chill, converse, study and just hang out with friends. Parking is shared with other companies in this industrial area. I will return to Spokesman when I'm in the area. read more

Y'all. I may have found my first local spot in Austin. As a newcomer to ATX, I've been slowly making my way around town. I'm so glad Spokesman is in the surrounding area and doesn't require too much driving or dealing with traffic! With a self-imposed bougie beer background after living in San Diego, I can proudly say that Spokesman has done a great job curating their beer selection and music overhead--might I add. All of the beertenders are knowledgeable and can direct you to the right beer or coffee for you. I'm not a coffee drinker, so I'm no use for those interested in the coffee aspect. I enjoyed my Electric Jellyfish IPA (Pinthouse Pizza) and forgot what other IPA I got previously--but that's OK because their list rotates all the time. I also love the cheezy goodness of their well-made grilled cheese. It also comes with a sundried tomato pesto spread--watch out for my nut allergy folks! The dill pickle and veggies that come on the side are a wonderful little addition to the order. They also have pastries and small salads too if you don't want something like a sandwich. The quinoa salad is refreshing and a great starter to share for two. Come for a light lunch, to get some studying done, or to meet up with a casual date. Spokesman has got you! The restrooms have some YouTube beauty channel-esque glam-azing lighting, and the entire café bar (it sounds so funny typing it) is clean and minimal. Not too many outlets available, so maybe invest in some large outlet strips? But it might mess up the cool, sleek, underground vibe they have here. When you enter, you'll see some tall bike racks for those who choose to arrive via hard work, sweat, and spokes. The gals and gents behind the bar are wonderful baristas and beertenders, and even the food runners/(chefs?) are so full of smiles and heart when they run out your food orders. Such a cool place, and so totally vibe-ing Austin. Major kudos to the Spokesman for embodying sustainability in a cafe setting. They've got compostable take away cups and utensils, which is so rare. Their tea comes loose leaf in a steal strainer, and all their food is severed on reusable plates and in mugs. I got the Turkish tea, flavorful and now one of my favorites. I'm not sure if this is a house mix, but the tea tasted unique and strong. Unlimited hot water refills, just go up to the bar area and ask! With tea I got the tasty morning bun, kind of like a cinnamon roll but with different nuts and really big. Flakey croissant exterior with a goo-y interior, this was a really nice cafe treat! I think tourists and locals both enjoy the distinctive graffiti art on the walls of this cafe. It's located in a shipping container area that has a nice outdoor seating place too. read more

Spokesman is everything I want and more. I worry to yell too loudly about how great they are because then everyone will know and make them busy all of the time. On the one hand that's great for business, on the other I want to keep them all for myself. A lot of coffee shops can be snooty and pretentious, but this ain't that. Everyone there truly loves coffee and people. They just want everyone to be caffeinated and happy. What better a mission than that? They roast their own beans which means you're getting a truly unique cup when you go there. All of their espresso pulls are doubles to start. That's why I love getting the 1:1 when I go to sit down. You get a single shot of espresso and a baby latte with the other single shot inside. You also get a glass of sparkling water and a Hershey kiss. Total perfection. This lets you explore and taste the espresso on its own and then see it in a drink with the milk. It's an awesome way to discover what you might like or not like about a particular roast. Then on your way out if you liked it you can buy a bag of those beans to take home for your coffee there for the week. It's the best. read more

We were in the area just up the street at St. Elmo Brewing and really wanted a latte so we walked over to Spokesman. It's a beautiful space with a lot of space! I was really impressed. For some reason I had it in my mind that there wouldn't be sufficient seating but I was pleasantly surprised. We sat out in the side yard since we had our neighbor's pup with us. Even the seating in the side yard was great! We tried the Sunday special which was a sandwich and beer from the list for $10. The turkey and cheese sandwich was huge and really good! Loved the pickled veggies that came on the plate as well. The latte was delightful. I love their coffee beans as they weren't bitter and quite smooth tasting. They have desserts from La Patisserie for those of you with a sweet tooth. The bike rack inside was kinda cool but I think a counter with seats to look out would be cooler. I like this place! Coming into this place, I thought it was a two-level facility, but it's just an one-floor warehouse space with high ceilings. The art on the wall reminds me of some breweries I've seen in Miami's Wynwood mural district. This place is a coffee roaster, beer pub, snack kitchen, and a community hangout spot for cyclists - all wrapped up in one and perfect for creatives and hipsters alike. What's unique about this place is that they keep it simple. The coffee menu is straight forward, and their beer selection is from St. Elmo brewery only. Their snacking options are basic and decent, although I wish they had a better selection of stuff for breakfast for the early-morning risers. Aside from that, they prepared a good cappuccino, provide alternative milks, offer gluten-free muffins for those who are watching the diet, and at the same time do a cupping sample of various roasts - all on a weekday morning. Definitely for the alt-left crowd. Also amusing is the fact that bike motifs can be seen throughout the space - on the art in the walls, the artistic hanging bike racks, the bathroom decor, and ... well... the name Spokesman which is a play on the word "spokes." The ambiance is great, especially if you're working there Thursday into the evening where you can bring your own record and they will play it through. They make the best golden milk i've ever had! Both aesthetically and taste-wise. The service is also great and they have plenty of seating, there's a bar to work at which has outlets, booths, and outdoor seating. I am such a fan of what is now called "The Yard". Little warehouse community of the Beer Brewery, Whiskey, and Winery and of course the Coffee and Beer House. They collaborate with St. Elmo Brewery so that they are carrying different selections which includes rotating what's in season. I generally prefer to meat in my meal so I've tried the Grill Cheese and Chickpea Salad Sandwiches. The Chickpea Salad Sandwich in particular is one to praise. Possibly the best Chickpea Salad Sandwich I've tried. (Whip In has a great Chickpea + Mash Avocado option too btw). Great and friendly staff. One Saturday late evening (11:30PM) we were hungry and although it looks like they don't serve at night, the barista accommodated. There's this absolutely INSTAGRAMMABLE outside alleyway decorated with succulents and soon to be vines up the building walls. Very peaceful and private place to hang out for lunch. Stopped here one Sunday mid morning and it was pretty calm and quiet. Parking was easy, and we were able to order our drinks quickly. The aesthetic in the place is really light and fun, and they have a lot of outdoor seating area. There were a lot of people doing work/homework of some kind, it is definitely a place where you can come and chill for a while. There was a large selection of drinks, including some seasonal options. I decided to get an iced Americano which I thought had a good flavor. Drinks were to us pretty quickly, and there was a water station four easy water access. The cream and sugar area also had almond milk, which I thought was a nice addition. Most places usually only have half and half, so a non-dairy alternative was nice to see. I landed in the Austin airport and wanted to find a local brewery with good food and character. I found Spokesman on yelp and was delighted by what I found. Granted, I thought the navigation was taking me somewhere very odd as Spokesman is a bit off the beaten path and was a bit harder to find in the dark. But it's worth it. I was greeted by a friendly staff and an interesting menu. The beer was fantastic and I got a cold brew coffee to go for the next morning. For food, I'd suggest the chicken salad sandwich. It was delicious! However, the bread is toasted a bit too much--so crunchy it hurt my mouth a bit. But overall, crisp and fresh flavors that left me wanting more.
