I absolutely love the fact that there are so many black owned restaurants in Maryland. I'm even happier that one is less than 10 min from my home. I heard a lot about Spiced Black from friends and decided to check them out on day for lunch. The interior of the restaurant was very clean and welcoming. The staff had wonderful customer service. Unfortunately due to popularity of the bowl I wanted, I had to wait about 15 min for the collard greens to cook. I gladly waited as I wasn't the only one lol! I purchased the BBQ southern soul bowl. It has white rice, roasted sweet potatoes, charred collard greens, and supposedly homemade cornbread croutons with Cheddar Cheese Sauce. I added the chicken sausage because after tasting it, I had to! Unfortunately, I did not get the homemade cornbread croutons and I didn't notice until I was home. Okay, so, before even going, I called to check on the gluten free options. The person on the phone was so nice and patient. I wanted to get either the yellow rice and sofrito bowl or the mango jerk Caribbean jerk salad. I was told that the sofrito bowl was totally safe but if I get the mango jerk salad, I would have to change out the salad dressing. I got in the car and make the trek to the spot. The store is bright and vibrant. I love the layout of the store. It smelled AMAZING. Like Sunday dinner. I get in line. There's people in the line but it moves fast. I ordered the yellow rice and beans Sofrito bowl. Unfortunately, they were out of avocado so instead, I got the mango salsa. Let me tell you, this was absolutely amazing. Every element in the bowl was seasoned very well. Initially I thought they skimped on the shrimp, but there was a lot of food in that bowl. It was really great. The only thing I would change is that I would definitely get the avocado if they had it next time and I would get only half of the Sofrito sauce and put it on the side. It was great but just a preference. I didn't eat the plantain until the next day because I was so full. I put it in the air fryer and it was amazing. Good cooking idioms are apropos. I ran out of superlatives to describe this fast casual soul food bowl concept. It is too easy to compare Spiced Black to other create your own bowl places. Too easy and too limiting. The unique selections of bases, like Jollof rice, and toppings, like collard greens, is unlike any place I have ever been. Is the sum greater than the parts, or are the parts by themselves greater than the whole? After two different bowls I cannot decide. Bowl one's base was Jollof Rice topped with collard greens, cooked corn and onion, red beans, red cabbage, green onion, cilantro, and red peppers. I love that there are numerous protein options like grilled shrimp, salmon, barbecued chickpeas, in addition to chicken and beef. I went with the perfectly grilled salmon. I added collard green pesto dressing. Yes, you read that correctly, collard green pesto dressing!!! I tried it and give me a gallon of it. Each ingredient sang soulful songs as soloist, but combined into a celestial chorus! The collard greens are among the best I have ever had. Meatless, perfectly cooked, vinegar twinged, hearty, and just darn great! I wish they sold them as a separate side dish. The red beans will have you missing Monday in New Orleans (red beans day IYKYK) and pining for a bigger side dish of them, like by the tub. Same for the barbecued chickpeas, which tasted like baked beans sweet and smoky with a molasses or honey barbecue sauce. As a home cook, I am going to try my baked bean recipe with chickpeas instead of navy beans. The red cabbage is sublime. The second bowl was the similar except switching chickpeas in place of salmon and adding chipotle Caesar dressing along with the collard green pesto. Like the youth on social media say, give 13 of them! I customized my bowls but they have curated bowls that also sound like they would be Dy-No-Mite! The prices are a little higher than Chipotle and Cava because of the high quality but pricey seafood proteins. However, the taste and quality is far superior and well worth it. The service line setup is similar to those other places, but that is where the comparison ends. Service was outstanding but to the uninitiated, it would help to peep the options beforehand so you are not holding up the line like I did. Apprehension about asking Neophyte questions aside, I had zero qualms about the ordering experience. They are about to have all my money and patronage as they should. Prince George's County residents deserve places like this. The line was robust, but should have been longer than lines at the nearby Chipotle. Spiced Black's is serving some delicious Diaspora food combining soul/Caribbean/African/Creole and more. I welcome the challenge of trying combinations I would not have contemplated (like cornbread croutons or toasted cashews as a topping). I saw Spiced Black on social media and got super excited when I realized this was close to my job. I went for lunch the next Monday and was pleased with my experience. The place is nicely decorated inside with beautiful African art. They have a variety of bowls to choose from with suggested proteins or you can make your own. I went with the mango Caribbean jerk with the suggested salmon. I also opted to add a little bit of coconut rice and was given the option of dressing on the side. Going through the line was fairly quick and the staff gave great suggestions based on my preferences. I left with two bowls to try: the Cajun style and the BBQ Southern bowls. I also snagged a bottle of the kale lemonade, and one each of the regular and banana flavored rum cakes. The food was fantastic!! The bbq bowl was my favorite but both were sizable and flavorful. The chicken was tender and the sweet potatoes add a nice complement. Definitely tasted like Sunday dinner in a bowl. You can add toppings and proteins like any other salad/grain spot. Pricing was perfect. The three sizes were clutch @ $6 $12 $18. The fruit juices were a little pricy at $5 for about 8oz. The reminiscence of Sunday dinner with grandma in the bbq southern bowl which had cornbread croutons . Last the beauty of the bayou in the jambalaya and etouffe whose whole roasted okra wasn't slimy at all. Side bar. The Jolloff has pickled habanero peppers. Don't let the word pickled fool you. Food is good! Service is good! Atmosphere is ok (little small to sit and eat), but very clean. If you're used to all of your food being sugary, you might don't like this place. Good quality food, wholesome ingredients, the way food was meant to be eaten. I've been about 4-5 times each time a hit! My favorites are the greens, grilled and bbq chicken, chicken sausage, and sweet potato! So many combinations it's crazy. read more

We really enjoyed our food! It was fresh and infused with southern and Caribbean roots. I loved that I could add things like plantains to my bowls. They had pre-made popular bowls and some make your own bowls which we did. The service was great. They were helpful since it was our first time. It is a fast food counter-style set up with limited eat-in seating. We will definitely be back in our travels! read more

An absolute gem! I had the Mango Caribbean Bowl, and it was nothing short of amazing. The chicken was juicy, the shrimp was perfectly cooked, and the flavor profile was out of this world it was sweet, savory, and packed with bold Caribbean spices. Every bite was a burst of deliciousness! the staff was phenomenal and attentive. The restaurant was so super hygienic as well despite just finishing a huge catering order.
