I noticed it's very difficult to find authentic Jamaican food in the DMV /Maryland. I've heard so many transplants with the same feedback. I decided to try this restaurant and honestly What a disappointment. I ordered 2 entrees, extra sides and an appetizer. Our waitress, Ivie F brought 12 pieces of wings when we ordered when we only ordered 6 as per the menu. Once we brought it to her attention she said sternly "well I heard 12" and walked away. What kind of service is this? I ordered the following menu items: Oxtails- 1out of 5 very watered down, sauce extremely dark and flavorless Jerk wings- 2 out of 5 Callaloo- 4 out of 5 very hard to find vegetable here in the US. This was very well prepared String beans -3 out of 5 Fish- 3 out of 5 nice presentation but overcooked/ dry Festival- 2 out of 5 Lemon drop- 3 out of 5 The food didn't taste authentic nor traditional. The flavors felt watered down, too much sauce or just plain salty. My husband (originally from Jamaica) who owns a Jamaican restaurant in another state figured he would help a fellow Jamaican out by giving some tips. The manager explained that the people in Maryland like it this way but he wouldn't cook it like this at home! Had dinner on a Friday evening. Arrived about 7 PM. There was plenty of parking. I was surprised to see that for Friday evening. The restaurant was only about 30% full. That is a telltale sign in itself. The bar got progressively more busy as the night went on. The best part was our waitress. I wish I had gotten her name. It looked like she was also the bartender. She was attentive. She checked in on us. She got us everything in a timely manner. Outside of that, everything was just kind of average. Maybe I don't go out enough but &14 for a cocktail for me felt like a lot. Our food was good. Just good. Nothing was awful. Although, the mild escovitch sauce was VERY vinegar forward. This space is what used to be a Pizza Hut. The vibe is easy and the music is relaxing and not too loud. There's a nice sized bar in the middle of the restaurant space and patrons are having lively conversations. I ordered an oxtail plate for my wife to enjoy and she was very pleased with the oxtail, plantains and steamed cabbage. I must confess that I forgot to order peas and rice with this dish. So to compensate, I made rice at home to supplement this arrangement. The chef came from the kitchen to make sure it was my order that he was preparing and it was nice gesture for a staff member to check the order and meet the patron that ordered it. I ordered the curry chicken which says $23 on the menu & my other half ordered the seafood combo which says $28/30 it does not say nothing about a $5 upcharge for salmon. Then as we spoke to the owner about the issues first thing he said was she should've told us food prices went up & he can't reprint menus cause it costs him $2K but part of being in business is being prepared for things like this the customer shouldn't have to be surprised when the bill comes. I ordered the boneless jerk chicken breasts, cabbage and fried dumplings for take out. The chicken was tender and the spiced chicken was tasty and tender. The level of spiciness( very spicy) was good for me but i think most Americans would have found it too spicy, and medium or less might be a better choice. Been hearing about this place for a minute, and I heard they were off to a bit of a rocky start. I was in the neighborhood and finally decided to try them out. Upon entering, a wave of nostalgia hit me. This was where the classic looking Pizza Hut with the red roof used to be, and I remembered so many times coming as a kid. The layout has completely changed now, of course. And it was great hearing all the reggae and dancehall tunes! There's a big bar, and the place was mostly empty. I was there towards the end of the night. There were just a few groups in there -- one which was celebrating their birthday, so that was cool. I grabbed a seat at the bar and the bartender was updating the playlist and taking care of others there. I learned it was Taco Tuesday and they had some food and drink specials going on -- alright now! I was intrigued at the presence of jerk chicken and curry chicken tacos. I ordered those along with a side of roti and callaloo. The roti and callaloo were everything I could've hoped for. The jerk and curry tacos came in little square dishes, and completely fell apart when trying to pick them up. Given all the juice that comes from the sauces, plus the protein and weight, that was inevitable. They use one tortilla each, and would probably benefit from being doubled up. And given the presentation, I had to fork some chicken out before I could even attempt to pick them up. Unfortunately because of the size of the dishes they were in, anything that fell out immediately hit the bartop. I hope they improve those moving forward --- taco format aside, the jerk & curry were decent. I'm looking forward to returning and trying more things! read more

I journeyed all the way out to Bowie for a separatd event and, while there, I recognized this restaurant from IG so I decided to check it out. For reference, Shantoo sits in the same plaza as Sky Zone. I ordered escovutch fish online and when the quoted time arrived, I entered the restaurant. The space is large and there is a large bar in the middle. My order took a good while longer than the quoted time to be complete so, while I waited, I was able to observe a gentleman who gave 'owner' vibes, interact with the customers at the bar and, for that alone, I'd come back to have drinks - he had great energy! I took my order to-go, so the entire trip home, I was smeling those DELICIOUS scents and I was excited to taste. I didn't love the to-go packaging of my food and I wanted a bit more seasoning on my fish but the spice and taste of the escovitch sauce was perfect!! We came in shortly after they opened and there were no other customers. The food took some time to come out and it came out one by one (there were 5 of us). I called, they were not apologetic. Ok, blame me again (I believe in 3 strikes), I ordered delivery now a year later. Order was supposed to be delivered half hour ago and my poor Uber Eats driver is losing money waiting for them to complete my order. I've called and no one picks up with full voicemail. That's it. We tried the patties. They were good. The jerk patties was the best to me. We ordered the BB fired wings. They were delicious. Sort of reminds you of the honey BBQ wings back in the day at KFC. Everything about it from the food to the ambiance was simply exquisite! The location is PERFECT with plenty of free parking, lots of space inside with plentiful tables, chairs, booths and a large inviting bar in the middle of it all. It's so spacious. It's owned by a group of siblings who moved to the DMV from Jamaica 13 years ago. They explicitly state on the menu that they use "Walkerswood" which signals you right away that everyt'ing is irie with the food so anything you order will be authentic and can't be mistaken for cheap Jamaican imitation. So don't start with the "this isn't authentic Jamaican" nonsense. LOL! My dinner companion and I ordered a few different things and tried each other's. We had the jerk wings and got the medium heat and had them add their homemade hot pepper sauce on the side just in case. The wings were tender and juicy and sizeable, not those Cornish hen wings people keep selling us around town elsewhere. Franks Red Hot had NOTHIN' on their hot pepper sauce. I really COULD put THAT isht on everything! I had the curried shrimp, peas and rice and cabbage. The curried shrimp was in a "pot liquor" with peppers and onions and was so delicious I could put THAT isht on everything too! In fact, I saved the leftovers of it, took it home and tossed some air fryer wings and even some steamed shrimp in it. It had the perfect balance of heat and flavor! The peas and rice was fluffy, tender and oooooh the flavor of the coconut milk and spices whinin' together on the plate! Chef's kiss! And the cabbage was perfectly steamed and lightly spiced. Oftentimes, restaurants destroy cabbage and overcook it until it turns brown. And most local DMV Jamaican or Caribbean spots I've tried have peas and rice MUSH with too-hard peas. Well this peas and rice was fluffy, peas soft and the cabbage was GREEN like new money! I also had a side of callaloo. That callaloo was better than what I had IN JAMAICA! It had beautiful fresh peppers and onions and mixed greens, "sweated" together to complement their different flavors and textures with the spices added. Callaloo-jah, that stuff was BOMB!!! My dinner companion had the stewed oxtails and raved about them so much. She said they were perfectly trimmed of fat and gristle which often plagues a good stewed oxtail. But not here! There was zero gristle on them and she remarked how they were so deliciously tender that even the bones were soft enough to chew on. She typically wouldn't dare nibble on bones in a public setting, but she did so shamelessly in Shantoo, not only because of how wonderfully the oxtails were prepared but also because one feels that much "at home" there. I had seen in a couple other people's reviews of this place about a Shantoo mule cocktail. Everyone raved about it so I ordered one. I didn't see it on the menu though, and when I ordered it, they referred to it as a Manchester mule. So just note that if you want to try their version of a Moscow mule. It's the mule, in a mule cup, but with a tropical island twist. It is refreshing, smooth and "sneaky." I highly recommend this cocktail, the ideal complement to an authentic island meal. The prices on everything were surprisingly reasonable too! It's grown increasingly difficult in this climate of extreme inflation to find a good bar or restaurant in the DMV where you don't spend your electric bill for desperately mid food and a few glasses of ice and juice disguised as cocktails. Maybe their prices were so reasonable because they're still fairly new, or maybe it's because they really don't need eggs for much of anything on their menu. Wink wink. The service overall was awesome too! While everyone working in there was very friendly and welcoming, our server was Kyra, an educator in DC who moonlights at Shantoo. She was fun, attentive, and was very engaging. She made great suggestions and made sure we had everything we needed at all times through the evening. Loud like - club loud. We scanned the code on the table and ordered. A few minutes go by and a server came over to bring water and take our order - we let her know that we placed our orders with the code. Cool. An hour goes by... One plate arrives. 20 minutes go by... Another plate arrived. Let's just say- the kitchen is slow! Eventually, our table is packed with all of our food and the portions were really good for happy hour prices. Close to 9pm, someone pulled out a karaoke machine. That was horrible. The staff is singing and trying to get restaurant goers to sing. That's adding insult to injury! Folks have been waiting so long for their food and now you want to add this to the mix!? Some folks actually got up and left after not getting food. I really hope that this restaurant survives in the neighborhood. They are going to need to get more folks in the kitchen - especially on a Friday night and turn down the music or expect a different kinda crowd. Our server let us know the owner/chef is born/raised in Jamaica and came here in 2011. Their spices, oxtail, and other items are imported directly from there. The flavors were delicious, authentic, and clearly made with love. Jerk wings are not your typical - he adds a special twist that truly was devine. The steamed red snapper is a must try - careful when eating because it is not fileted! First tried Shantoo on 9/20/25 - take out. Remodeling needs to be completed (used to be Pizza Hut); unfinished decor and furnishing. The Food quality is average at best...nothing special or unique about taste, presentation, quantity, etc. I'd prefer a local chain (e.g., Negril, Da Jerk House, etc.). Too many other better options in the area. I ordered curried chicken, curried goat, a beef patty, and carrot cake. Curried chicken and goad was good, not great! The beef patty was likely made the previous month and sat under a heat lamp for days before being served. It had very little filling. Very disappointed with the beef patty. The two sides, rice and broccoli were plain, dry, and tasteless. In fact, the second side of rice was left out of my takeout bag. We were greeted by our waitress who was pleasant and knowledgeable to provide good recommendations for appetizers and entrees. We started with the jerk chicken wings which were delicious!! Our entrees were the oxtails and estrovich snapper, rice and beans, cabbage and plantain. The fish and oxtails cooked well and tender. The rice lacks seasoning but tolerable when you add a gravy either oxtails or curry, the cabbage was ok more al dente than preferred but add the gravy eats well, and lastly the plantain were decent. The atmosphere was chilled, relaxed and they played Caribbean music giving the full experience . If you drink, the bar was the go to spot as many came to get the specialty drinks. We went during game night. I have to go back when it's not a game night because the music was so loud i coudn't even have a damn conversation (that's why this rating is not a 5). Oh also, after we were sat down, we waiting 15 minutes for waitstaff to even ask for drinks. Otherwise! I am coming back or ordering to go! The food was amazing! I normally take pictures but I literally dove in to everything and didn't even think about pictures. I had the jerk wings (9/10) that were so tender and yummy, you can tell they were fresh. Just need to offer some ranch or blue cheese. Also the beef ribs. I wanted oxtail but they were out, that was disapointing. But those beef ribs did not!! I thoroughly enjoyed them 9.5/10. I had a beef patty as well, that was kinda flat but the taste made up for it! 9/10. My friend had the jerk chicken, cabbage and rice and peas and she said everythign was hot fresh and delicious!!
