    Chicken Rice
    Angeline T.

I was really excited to try their food so I decided to go for their Lunch Special on the weekdays! I ordered the Chicken rice and I was quite disappointed :( the chicken felt rubbery and oily, and the whole plate was so oily as well. I expected better since this is one of their popular dishes. However, value wise it was worth it for how much food you're getting. Their lunch special also includes a spring roll, which I think it was about $15 altogether. Service was quick and the ambiance was perfect for a friendly catch-up, nice looking patio too!

Local spot that serves up classic asian flavors. The Hainanese Chicken was a bit dry and the scallion sauce could've used more flavor. Overall, still solid. The coconut rice was the highlight of the dish (you could eat a plate of just the rice, it was that good). The custard tart was a bit too buttery to the point where you couldn't taste any other flavors. The pastry had an amazing flakiness though. Overall a solid place to come to when you're craving homey flavors.

We've been craving peking duck and decided to try it here. We got the half Peking Duck Set and were very impressed by it. The duck was delicious and the vegetables were fresh. We also got the Crispy Pork Loin in Ginger Sauce and that was great as well. The sauce had tons of flavour without being too sweet or having an overpowering ginger flavour. However, we found the soup dumplings a little disappointing. When we bit into it we didn't really get any soup out of it and the texture wasn't exactly what we hoped for either. We've had much better soup dumplings and probably won't order it here again. For dessert we got free egg tarts for making a reservation through yelp. The crust was very buttery, like puff pastry or croissant dough. My partner has tried many egg tarts and said this was the best, so that says a lot! The staff here was friendly but the service was a bit slower than we'd like. We waited quite a while for the entrees and then had a lengthy wait at the end just for the egg tarts. We loved the Peking Duck and will probably be here again the next time we're craving it!

*I am a Xiao Long Bao (XLB) enthusiast. I only tried their XLB (Pork) & Har Gow, thus my review is quite limited. Also, the order was for "take out". So excited to find a new place that has XLB on the menu! Their XLB had thicker skin but had a good amount of soup. The size of the meat was appropriate for the room in the pocket. The soup was a bit darker and stronger and lacked a depth of flavor. Yet, overall OK! (Note: XLB is not their signature item). I also had Har Gow as I was hungry haha. It was better than I expected (no previous review about this item found). Met with whole plumpy shrimps, which made me feel that this place knows how to treat seafood! Tobiko was sprinkled on top - that gave a nice popping texture. The skin was not as smooth, but did not fall apart and was not too starchy. Good! It is close to my work. I may visit here to explore more items!

Soya is a Chinese restaurant in the Baldwin village. It is a great spot for Chinese lunches, serving up dishes of all preferences. Smoked duck breast app - A good amount of juicy, tender duck breast. Cooked well and seasoned lightly so the smokey flavour came through. They provided a, I think self-made hosin sauce, that was not of my liking. Fortunately the duck breast was good on its own. Hainanese Chicken Rice - An untraditional take on this dish: bone in Hainan chicken, with sour and spicy soup, as opposed to the more traditional chicken broth. The chicken was cooked nicely, such that it was tender and juicy. The chicken was light on seasoning, but came with the ginger scallion oil that was good on the chicken and rice. The rice felt unseasoned, as traditionally it would come chicken oil rice. Overall it was good, but would only choose this if I'm looking for a more bland dish. BBQ pork chop rice - Something a bit more impressive was the pork chop with omelette on rice. The pork looked and tasted similar to that of a char siu. Egg was fried nicely to get the crispy edges and runny yolk inside. Pork was cooked well and did not come out dry. Would come back for this after trying the other dishes. Egg tart - The lunch menu comes with vegetarian spring rolls and an egg tart. The egg tart really finishes off the meals and makes me want to come back again. The egg tart comes fresh from the oven so that the custard is convex. The skin of the tart different from traditional flaky egg tarts. Whereas they are dry and pasty, these egg tarts are super buttery. Definitely, coming back to finish off a meal with this. Jubilee Tea - A delicious fruit warm tea with hints of peach and pear. The price a bit steap for the amount you get but it is worth the first try! Butter beer - Feels like a root beer float, safe yourself the $$$ and get either the alcoholic version or jubilee tea!

Freshly baked egg tarts that were complimentary through Yelp reservations

So we were very excited to try the Peking duck set because it looked so amazing and my wife and I both love duck, especially Peking duck that comes with the thin crepe instead of the thick bun. However, if you prefer the thick bun version, they offer that as well. Unfortunately, the duck was a disappointment due to how incredibly lean our duck was; the duck barely had any fats to it, which despite having hoisin sauce to accompany it, it was still incredibly dry and hard to swallow, literally :/ The Siu mai was interesting but it was very bland and flavorless. Definitely skip this unless you want to fill yourself up with some gluttonous rice. If they added some small bits of Chinese sausage or mini dried shrimp, it would definitely enhance the flavor! The best thing that we had in this whole meal, was the complimentary egg tart that was offered to us for making our reservation through Yelp. It was flakey, buttery, and creamy! Definitely one of the best egg tarts I ever had! This by itself is worth 5 stars but unfortunately the rest of our experience isn't :/ The staff were incredibly friendly, and our waitress was able to speak English, Cantonese and Mandarin. Very great staff! Thank you for reading and good luck! (:

Located where Kon-nichi-wa was situated before, Soya Mandarin Kitchen is one of the restaurants you'll find in Baldwin Village close to Chinatown. The decor inside is minimal but the space is bright and spacious. Family owned restaurant with Yang, the Son acting as the front staff and server while his Mom & Dad works in the kitchen. Very nice, friendly people who talks and socialize with customers. Since they're from the Northern part of China, dishes here are more bolder and richer compared to other Chinese style of cooking. Perusing the menu you will also see dishes with influences from Russian, Mongolian and Korean cuisines. I was excited to see that they have Spicy Mapo Tofu since this is one of my favorite Chinese dish and I have yet to find one that suits my taste. And I'm happy to tell you that Soya's Mapo Tofu is by far the best I've tried so far. The silky creaminess of the soft tofu coats your tongue plus the crispy bits of the pork adds a pleasant contrast to the softness and sauciness of the dish. It has a pleasant numbing spice which wants you to eat more and pairs perfectly well with their steam mixed rice. They also offer Dimsum and we tried their Pork Siumai and Bean Curd Rolls and both are good and tasty. Ordered one of their stir-fries and loved their Black Pepper Chicken Sizzling Plate. Juicy and flavourful chicken with a medley of vegetables and intensely flavoured black pepper sauce will surely makes your taste buds go crazy. Generous food portions and prices are justified. Took home some leftovers which still tasted good the following day. Already looking forward to our next visit to try other food on their menu and will be recommending to friends and families.

    General Tao Chicken

Last month, we went downtown and stumbled upon a great restaurant without even doing any research! We were immediately drawn in by the beautiful decoration and lunch specials that caught our eye. The prices were also very reasonable. We ordered the "Hainanese chicken rice," but it wasn't quite authentic and the chicken was a little dry and roasted tasting. However, I really enjoyed the seasoned rice. We also tried the General Tao chicken, which tasted more like sweet and sour chicken and wasn't spicy. But their portions were very generous and even included egg tarts, spring rolls, and salad. The spring rolls were crispy and delicious, and they even had my favourite - Portuguese egg tarts! I saved it for last because the crispy, flaky crust is my favourite part. I'm sure it would taste even better if I heated it up at home. I've heard that their signature dish is the Peking duck, but it's probably better to order it with a larger group of people. I'm definitely planning to go back and try it next time.

A cute and quaint place! The decor was original with its murals/ paintings. Service was prompt and lovely. The quality of the food was really good and the prices were beyond reasonable. They have sets you can order that come with a Soya tea, choice appetizer, choice meal (with salad and spring rolls) and egg tart for dessert for $25! They have daily specials- today was mapo tofu! We got 3 different sets, half a Peking duck and the mapo tofu. The Hainanese chicken was tender and oily- just how it should be! The tofu and veggie main was great! They sure know how to make a bean curd and was happy it wasn't a firm/ medium tofu! They used a soft/ silken unlike most places. The mapo tofu was semi mala but it wasn't overwhelmingly spicy which I enjoyed. The drinks, wasabi crab claws, shrimp bites, spring rolls and egg tarts were all great!! The only reason I'm removing a star is due to the duck being a bit on the dry side with very little fixings (skin, hoisin sauce, cucumbers) and the eggplant with garlic appetizer was drenched with garlic. That's the only thing I could taste and it was overbearing. Overall though, great experience!

I don't get the hype. Maybe it's my non- Northern Chinese tastebuds, but while I thought Soya was pretty good, it was nowhere near great. Stopped by for dinner and got: - Peking Duck (half set): Portion size for 2. This is one of the things Soya is known for, and it was good. The duck skin was crispy and the meat was fatty (though in parts a bit too much). The pancake was standard, though I like how they had a lot of it. Hoisin sauce was enough, so no need to add. - Wasabi Crab Claws: Good portion size, good fry (not overly oily). The star though was the dip, which added a fresh kick to the dish. - Pork Belly Mando Burger: The pork was a bit too fatty in some parts and a bit bland. Sauce added the needed flavour. The bread was overly chewy. - Black Sugar Buns: Never had these before, and it definitely lives up to its name. It's like if you dunked bread in sugar and were something able to dry out the liquid but able to leave the chewiness and sweetness. - Egg Custard: Good amount of custard, flaky enough base. Comes free if you reserve via Yelp! Good space between tables, breezy dining area given how open it is. Service is efficient and friendly. Wouldn't go back, but hopefully that's just me.

Top left: spicy and sour soup Bottom right: shrimp hagao

Casual Chinese restaurant. I came with my boyfriend so he can try Peking Duck at a smaller portion, since they serve half sizes here. The service was slow, even though it wasn't too busy. The Peking Duck took quite some time to come out and I wish it came out when it was hot so it would be more crispy. The duck was turning cold towards the end of our meal. Other than that, it was good. The spicy and sour soup was alright, more spicy than sour in my opinion. The shrimp hagao was fine but had chewier and thicker skin than other hargow I've had. The egg tarts were delicious and is like Portuguese style egg tarts, but took a really long time to come out after our meal. We finished our food, ordered dessert, and waited another 20 mins for it. This would not be an issue if they told us in advance how long it would take. We were about to leave the restaurant without it. There was only one other table dining at that time. Because of the service, I am rounding my review from 3.5 to 3 stars. Not sure if I'd be back, but they seem to have good lunch deals. Look out for their yelp check in and reservation freebies!

I've been here twice already and both times I've thoroughly enjoyed my meals. Home-cooking would be the best way to describe their dishes because none of the food tastes over-processed. The variety of dishes on the menu can be a bit overwhelming but I would highly recommend the sweet and sour pork, the dim sum dishes, eggplant, and egg tarts. I've never tried egg tarts quite like theirs and they always come piping hot to the table. The staff are super friendly and you can tell they care about the customer's experience. I'll definitely be back here again and look forward to introducing more of my friends to this restaurant.

Great selection of Chinese food! We tried Peking duck, some dim-sum, chicken rice dish and soup. They're family owned business. Their cooking style is influenced by Mongolia, Russia and North Korea. Everything they cook here tends to be more hearty, and bolder. The classic example is they use a darker soy instead of light soy. Their BBQ food was more influenced by Mongolian. Our favourite dishes were RUSSIAN TOMATO BORSCHT SOUP and CRISPY PORK LOIN in Ginger Sauce. The tomato soup was a bit sweet and sour, and very flavourful. We loved it!

We ended up ordering the Signature Spicy Grilled BBQ Fish ($40), a whole fish served bubbling hot with three toppings (potatoes, spam, and lotus root). You can choose between catfish and turbot, we chose the turbot fish. It looked extremely spicy, but the spice level was actually perfect. It was a bit on the oily side, but pairing it with rice balanced it out nicely. The fish was very tender and buttery, everything tasted amazing! We also ordered the Stir-Fried Egg with Tomato. The eggs were soft, the tomato sauce was rich. Not to mention the portion size was huge, we even had leftovers after eating until we were full. The restaurant itself was spacious, clean, and had plenty of seating. I think they were doing some sort of promotion so they gave us a $25 off coupon, though it expired pretty quickly so we didn't get to use it. I'd definitely come back for that grilled fish.
