But the staff was super friendly, and since they share management with Big Trouble, they gave us free cover cards, which was a nice surprise. We ordered the bulgogi dumplings, turnip cakes, miso mushroom udon carbonara, mushroom black garlic spaghetti, and the red curry chicken rigatoni. Everything was genuinely great, especially for the price. For a spot so close to the clubs, it's an awesome place to grab food during a night out. We had someone in our group who's gluten-free, and they were happy to sub rice noodles into one of the dishes. It was thoughtful of them to accommodate, but the rice noodles soaked up the sauce too much and clumped together, making it hard to eat. If you want to avoid the bar crowd, go during happy hour where it's much quieter. The asian night market vibes are definitely there, but with a cleaner aspect in mind. Only ordered a drink during happy hour so can't comment on other menu items. This place was very interesting. It was mysterious at first with the darkness, but because it was not packed, it got a little creepy. With the asian decor, I started second guessing myself inside. Midnight Market is Toronto best-kept secret hipster hangout. The place is owned and operated by the same family that brought you the Green Room and the Red Room, so you know it must be special. When you walk into this dark restaurant/bar you are immediately transported to Nonbei Yokocho or some other Tokyo bar alley. All around you are Japanese Knick knacks and street signs. The bar serves interesting cocktails by a chatty and cheerful bartender. But the real magic of this place is the bar at the back of the the bar - the "secret" VIP bar. Walking past two sets of Japanese curtains, you are transported to an intimate bar with more Japanese knick knacks, vinyl records and vintage electronics. The bartender (John) is a hip and super friendly mad scientist of a bartender. Behind the bar he concocts amazing drinks of his own imagination. He's happy to explain to you exactly what inspired him to create the drink, and all the ingredients that went into it. He's very knowledgeable about alcohol and is passionate about Japanese whiskey and his elaborate collection of bitters. Make sure to try these two amazing cocktails: 1. Rude and Respectful, which contains John's homemade vodka infused with Jalapeño and Thai chilli - it's devilishly spicy and delicious. 2. 3.5 stars Good vibes for hanging out with friends for snacks and drinks. Came on Friday night. Starts to fill up at 1030 and filled at 1130 but it was never crowded or service was quick for drinks with little to no wait. Drinks were decent. The high balls were tasty like the pineapple lo-tea which has tea infused flavour or the jeju drink which was my fave and very fruity and sweet. The pineapple sake bomb was ok the glass cup has a weird smell and not very pleasant. Drinks were about $15 after tips so average but alcohol content was light so easy to throw back a few. Music was eh....Hit and miss - a little too loud so hard to hear conversations even though sitting close together but not happening enough to make you want to get up and dance. It was a random kid of songs and they change it so fast by the time you recognize a song it was changed to the next one. I stumbled to this place in the college area totally by accident. It is a must to come and look at all the artifacts and decor that were inspired by Japan. If you're looking for a place with good ambiance this is it! The music sometimes good sometimes bad depends who the dj is. Rumor has it theres a secret. I remember trying the cocktails especially the lemonades it quite icy didn't really get to taste anything. I tried three different ones. I'll go with the standard beer. It starts getting packed around 9-10pm during the weekends so be prepared to line up or get rejected from capacity. Ideally should reserve in advance. read more

Pretty cute ambiance! Heard mixed things about the music before we went but my group went around 9pm, and we were able to settle in with a table we pretty much held for the rest of the night. We loved the 90s music, after 12 it switched over to top 20 which was ok. They give you shots in dim sum steamers which we loved that touch! One of the huts have a ceiling of ramen noodles with bar seating to enjoy your drinks/food. I think this place is a good place to chill and drink vs dance. read more

Awesome little speakeasy spot with nice subtle decorations that makes it feel like you're in small night market. They have great drinks and great appetizers to share and the prices aren't too bad. On Saturdays the bar turns into more of a social club which makes this place even more cool! Service was great and prompt and they care about their customers.
