    Vibes at the bar

Fabulous place with a creative twist on Asian Carribean food! Small restaurant with a nice, eclectic vibe. Really cool staff and delicious food. It's a bit pricy but worthwhile. (Not so much the drinks). Highly recommend the 3 patties, and the pineapple bun burger. The combination of the salty smash burger patties and the sweet flaky pineapple bun is to die for. Frozen patties are available for purchase next door too!

Over priced mediocre food not even worth the value small portion size. Got the 2 person platter. 2 started good items Brussel sprouts good the calamari with aloi. The rest not worth it for 99$. Cabbage coleslaw , peas and rice, crushed marinated cucumber very spicy. Cornbread not bad not super exciting crispy crumbly exterior herb butter decent. Chicken was small got a leg and a breast very small pickles in a paper sauce thing they give out at McDonald's for condiments. For 100$ I didn't even get steak, lobster or shrimp. + Up charge 10$ for oxtail. I could have similar food at a Caribbean resto take out and not have to pay half this price. Tables were very small, very noisy blasting music to a point where I have to shout across the small table to hear your friend. Could not even hear what th host said the items were that came to the table. Washrooms narrow downstairs and very narrow washroom stalls. Floors were wet as sink was super tiny. Decorations semi decent. Nice bar table in the front. Servers were okay no issues. Not worth the price save your money go else where. Don't understand the hype. Full on Friday evening. I don't see the fusion on the foods Jamaican-Asian not really there it's one or the other. It's a miss for me.

I can't lie. The customer service here was really nice. And I did like the restaurant outlay itself. I wouldn't say there's much of an ambiance there, but it's definitely a Vibe and can make you feel comfortable. But I must say the food was very mediocre. I'm happy I went here during summerlicious because of I spent full price for the food that I ate I would have left. Very upset. I would not recommend this place nor will I be going back.

Came to Patois for Winterlicious. It was a restaurant I've wanted to try for some time. The inside is nice, great vibes, nice music, extremely friendly staff. I have to say I was disappointed with the food. The beef patties which were short ribs with oxtail gravy was quite bland and well dried inside. I wished there was more gravy or at least gravy to maybe dip it in. The pastry itself was nice. It was served with a garlic sauces which I found very weird as an accompaniment. I ordered the Fried Chicken with Mac and cheese and coleslaw. The chicken, the coating itself had a nice crunch but the chicken was just bland. I got a side of their house hot sauce to help. The hot sauce was nice, very spicy but really there was nothing saving the chicken. The coleslaw wasn't great and well the Mac and cheese was just ok. Overall I found the found just not spiced the way I would have thought it would be for a Chinese/Jamaican place. The dessert was delicious. I got the grilled pineapple ice cream. Overall, the food was ok. I would come back to try the other dishes, but I left hungry and went home and had a sandwich.

my first time trying Jamaican chinese food. and patties! It kind of reminds me of an empanada! really yummy and the dough was soft and bready ~ fillings were great too and loved the dipping sauces we also got jerk chicken chow mein! super cool fusion food! lowkey idk what jerk chicken is supposed to taste like so idk if im credible but I enjoyed the food for dessert we finished w a hk style French toast! One of my favorite things to eat in hk and I was surprised to see it offered here. the bread was layered with a cookie spread and it was so sweet and indulgent. just a bit heavy on the sauce so I think if I were to do it again, I'd ask for less the place is super vibey and has a specific charm to it! it feels hipster but in a good way? feel like it's casual but also can be elevated for special occasions! service was stellar!! our waitress was really friendly and nice and conversational! overall, I think this was a great introduction to Chinese Jamaican food bc it was very much satisfying :)

Went to Patois for dinner and enjoyed the unique Asian-Caribbean fusion food. My friend and I ordered the oxtail mac and cheese with kimchi and the jerk chicken chow mein. The mac and cheese was excellent--rich, flavorful, and perfectly done. The chow mein, however, was a bit underwhelming and lacked flavour. That said, the overall experience was positive. The service was quick and friendly, and while it was quiet when we arrived, the place was packed by the time we left. I'd definitely go back to try more dishes, as everything around us looked great and other diners seemed to be enjoying their meals.

PATOIS TORONTO Location: Downtown Toronto Overall: 4/5 Price: $$-$$$ QUICK TAKE: Caribbean-Asian fusion that's pushing boundaries and creating flavor combinations you didn't know you needed in your life. PRO TIP: Hit this spot for lunch to avoid the dinner rush and score the coveted back booth! THE FEAST BREAKDOWN: 1. Brussels Sprout Salad (5/5) HOLD UP. This isn't your typical boring sprouts situation. The texture play here is INSANE - each bite is a journey through crispy, tender, and crunchy elements. The flavor profile? Absolutely knocked it out of the park. This is the dark horse MVP of the menu. 2. Pork Spare Ribs (3.5/5) * Flavor: On point! * Temperature: Needed some help * Would I order again?: Yes, but would request "extra hot" 3. Jerk Chicken (4/5) The heat level? Perfect for spice enthusiasts without being overwhelming. Meat was slightly Claude, but the seasoning game was strong enough to mostly make up for it. The authenticity of the jerk spices shines through. 4. Pineapple Bun Burger (4.5/5) NOW WE'RE TALKING! This burger is what fusion dreams are made of: * Perfectly seasoned beef patty * The bun! That subtle sweetness from the pineapple bun is *chef's kiss* * Juicy factor: * Temperature: Could've been hotter PRO TIP: Eat this one first while it's hot! PORTION SIZES: Feast for 2 ($$$) is actually enough for 3-4 if you're adding sides. Strategic ordering recommended! SERVICE (5/5): * Attentive without hovering * Secured us the prime back booth spot * Regular check-ins * Knowledgeable about menu items * Quick to refill drinks AMBIANCE (4/5): * Chill, laid-back vibe * Bar seating up front for solo diners * Good mix of tables for different group sizes * Music: Perfect volume for conversation * Lighting: Just right for those #foodstagram shots OVERALL EXPERIENCE: This is fusion done right - not just throwing cuisines together, but thoughtfully combining flavors that actually make sense. While there were some temperature issues, the flavors were consistently on point. THE VERDICT: Worth the visit for: * That Brussels sprout salad (seriously!) * Unique fusion concepts * Relaxed atmosphere * Attentive service * The pineapple bun burger experience Room for improvement: * Temperature consistency * Chicken tenderness * Maybe add some happy hour specials? INSIDER TIPS: * Lunch is your best bet for a chill experience * Back booth = best seat in the house * Brussels sprouts are a MUST * Save room for the burger * Portions are generous - plan accordingly PARKING: Street parking available, but can be tricky. Consider rideshare or public transit.

This place was an absolute highlight of visiting Toronto. Recommended by a local Toronto resident - I was impressed with this one. The ambiance of the location when you walk in is pretty nice. The myriad of food options we ordered came on a round spinner in the center of the table, allowing us to share food very easily. So we ordered all types of things that were all amazing. The food is a mix of Asian/Carribbean fusion, which was a new thing for me, but I was so full & left wanting more still! It didn't photograph well, but the most memorable thing I got was the cookie butter french toast that was one of the most delicious desserts I've gotten at a restaurant in a long long time. Could definitely do this again.

    Pineapple burger ($27.5)

This establishment is located steps away from Bathurst and Dundas. I love the atmosphere here, it's a great place to have drinks with friends/ more casual date. Their food is fusion of Chinese and Jamaican food. I tried their pineapple burger which was $27.5. Although their food is on the pricier side, I do feel like their food is a solid 7/10. I would come back with a bigger group of friends next time, and order a bunch of things to share. The table next to us ordered their Jerk Chicken Chow Mein ($27) and it looks very appetizing/ great value!

Jerk Pork Belly Yakisoba, Kingston calamari

the food was delicious and our server did great! However, it started off with a bad welcoming. I was running late for our reservation at 7pm due to Toronto traffic, policy is to hold for 15 mins but to call if running late. So I called 3 times at 6:45 left a voicemail and again at 6:54 and 7:10 and no answer. Then I get a call back at 7:26 and they said they gave our table up even though we were 2 minutes away. I understand policy but to not pick up your phone and call me to say you gave the table up and that your phone was upstairs...what is the point of calling then... Anyways, the food and drinks were good. Started with the Patios House Beer and Island storm. Also got the Jerk Pork Belly Yakisoba, Kingston Calamari, and Ox Tail Mac And Cheese. Our favourite was the Jerk Pork Yakisoba. It came with 3 long pieces of pork and a full plate of noodles. The calamari had such a soft breading yet crispy. The sauce was at the bottom so it was a little hard to get to for the first few bites. The Oxtail Mac and cheese had a lot of cheese and creamy; I didn't get too much ox tail in the dish but it's fine. Very filling! Price wasn't too bad for the amount of food we got! Space is small but it looked like it accommodated big groups (6+) and fit a lot of tables.

Reservations! This place was packed and they take their reservations seriously. My friend wanted to try this fusion Chinese Jamaican food because it's a unique combo you don't see much. Staff is pretty friendly. We didn't have reservations and opted to wait out any no shows and they were still attentive to us. We decided to sit outdoors instead of standing in the doorway. It was a rainy day so only one other party was dining in the covered outdoor seating. It kind of stormed so seats were little soaked but the hostess got us paper towels to wipe them down. We waited about an hour and gave up, deciding to dine outside since that didn't require reservations. Our only concern was the food getting rained on when they brought it out but the rain cooperated. I think my favorite was the burger that used a pineapple top bun as the bun. Hilarious fusion take and the one must try item. It was pretty good, not life changing but a must try once for those who grew up with pineapple buns and anyone who likes the sweet and savory mix. To those weirded out by combo, don't be a jerk chicken. We also went with the crispy noodle dish since we saw someone else order that. The sauce is pretty strong but it was good overall. Last dish we got was spare ribs. Pretty similar to the honey spare ribs you find at some dim sum places except coated and deep fried in what I assume is Jamaican seasoning. If you've never tried Jamaican food, I guess prepare yourself for flavor overload. I don't mean that in a bad way, just saying that since my friends were surprised by it.

Chicken and Waffles, Eggs Benny and Trini Mac Pie
    Rachel S.

The food here was delicious. We tried the brunch menu (so it didn't have a lot of the most commonly reviewed items) and opted for a Create Your Own Ultimate Brunch with two items and a side ($48). I think that's cheaper than if you bought everything separately, but maybe just by a few bucks? We chose the Patois Eggs Benny and Fried Chicken and Waffles, and the Trini Mac Pie (+$6). So in all, our meal was $54 and around $70 including tax and tip. The chicken and waffles was AMAZING - the cornbread waffles were such a great texture and flavour, and the chicken was seasoned perfectly. I seriously could have had a bucket of chicken. The one issue I had was that the sweet waffles kept attracting wasps, and we weren't even seated outside! We ended up scarfing down our food in 10 minutes to escape them. But other than that, 100% recommend the chicken and waffles. The Eggs Benny was good, but nothing too special. The use of the Jamaican patty as the base was definitely interesting, but it had become a bit soggy. The Trini Mac Pie was honestly really good but it was a bit unfortunate we had to pay a $6 upcharge for it as I didn't think including it in the $48 would be crazy, given the size of each dish. Overall, I definitely recommend Patois. Next time I'll come for dinner and try some of the more hyped items!

Left with a food coma because I couldn't help myself! The food was amazing! The music was great, service was good as well. I need to visit again so I can have the desert! It looks amazing! We ordered: Popcorn shrimp fried rice Chinese pineapple bun burger Jamaican patty double down - no bacon

We make a point to stop here at least every few months and are already talking about coming even more often because the food is that good. On this visit, we ordered the oxtail stew with rice and peas, curry goat, fried plantains, and a housemade nonalcoholic ginger beer. Everything was absolutely delicious. The oxtail was tender and flavorful, the curry goat was packed with rich spices, and the fried plantains were the perfect sweet addition to the meal. The standout for me was the housemade nonalcoholic ginger beer. It was hands down the best ginger beer I have ever had and is something I look forward to every visit. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming, the service is always excellent, and the overall vibe makes the experience even better. Chubby's is the definition of comfort food done right. If you're in Toronto and looking for authentic, flavorful Jamaican cuisine, this place is a must-visit.

After that, I really sold it to my wife and she was excited. We initially arrived at Chubby's and there was only bar seating available. As luck would have it, it was raining that Wednesday evening . Hearing that, my wife was highly disappointed and so was I. Quit frankly, I was going to go next door to Cafe Renee. But Zac was not having that. He checked a couple of times and found us a table. I was so relieved and my wife continued her enthusiasm. Zac showed us to our table and I swear I attempted to pay for accommodating us and he refused. The lovely Valentina was our server and she was delightful because she understood pace and flow. We ordered the Saltfish Fritters which were a great introduction to the restaurant. I had multiple Buffalo Soldier cocktails and my wife had multiple Rum Punches. We then ordered Jerk Chicken and Jerk Shrimp with rice and peas as our meal. Both were delicious. I also had a serving of plantains, and they were the best plantains I had ever eaten. I was amazed at how light the crunch was on the outside. A skill in itself! Finally, we had the Bread Pudding for dessert. Again...perfection. Zac was phenomenal and I appreciated his effort. I can certainly say from our experience, I understand the many positive reviews and here's another one to add to them!

I opted for the brunch buffet so that I could sample a few dishes. I had brown stew chicken, ackee, saltfish, rundown, callalou, plantains, and a little bit of a lot else. My water glass stayed full and used plates were removed as soon as I went for more food. This was one of the first times that a cultural restaurant in the heart of downtown had authenticity in the dishes. It became apparent when I passed the kitchen and heard patois. Not that patois was an indication of genuine flavor, given some cultural restaurants will compromise flavor for certain palates, but an elder speaking it is an elder who will serve you food as it should taste.

We tried a variety of dishes to varying degrees of enjoyment. Let's start with the good - we enjoyed the saltfish fritters, the Jamaican patties, the beef roti, and the fried bananas the most. They were balanced and very flavorful. The beef roti specifically looked like a giant burrito, but the beef within was so tender and well seasoned. We also really enjoyed the banana fritters which tasted like deep fried banana bread. As for the plates missing the mark - The jerk chicken was pretty tender but our two pieces were also pretty charred so we had to remove most of the skin where most of the rub would have been. Additionally, the goat curry and the oxtail were borderline inedible especially after we ran out of coleslaw which was its saving grace to making each bite palatable. It was so salty otherwise! There were also a lot of small bone fragments to work through on each dish. It wasn't necessarily that these dishes tasted bad but it was just impossible to enjoy due to the salt content. The staff at Simone's was very kind though. I could also tell that they made everything fresh and at order so I can appreciate the effort even though it didn't quite meet my expectations.

I've seen people eating their rotis there and the portions are pretty big. Service is no frills and the staff are friendly. This is a no frills place where you come for the good food. Overall, I definitely will return whenever I am in the area!

I got the curry chicken which I thoroughly enjoyed the flavor of the chicken inside, my problem was with the roti. As I cut more into the roti, it looked as though it wasn't cooked properly like patches of dry flour throughout to the point it didn't look appealing. I also grabbed a double which I enjoyed, they are much bigger than the ones I get at home in Va. I never had a Trini soda ~ Solo kola champagne which tastes very similar to the Jamaican version. The gentleman at the front counter was very nice and patient. The decor was definitely a Trini island feel. Bright colors and hand painted pictures. They have seating available for dine-in experience.

Decided to re-visit this allwyns's location for delicious Jamaican food…read more Located in a small strip plaza, there's generally plenty of parking. Inside, it's a small operation. Not a lot of seating to eat so consider takeout. Food: Jerk chicken sandwich - the jerk chicken had good flavor though a slightly oversalted. The coleslaw was crunchy and sweet to contrast the chicken. The coco bun was decently soft though not the must fluffy. 4/5. Goat roti - really good flavor and tender goat. The roti itself is very soft yet holds up against the filling. Pretty good at deboning the goat meat for the roti though the owner usually warns that there could be bones still. Pretty huge roti. 5/5. Allwyns is one of my favorite places to get jerk chicken. Definitely recommend.

I tried 2 places for beef patties today. Here and "Island…read moreFoods Express" at Woodbine and Hwy 7. Look at my other review for them. To compare the two, I ordered a spicy beef patty and tested them for flakiness, crispness, and filling. First off price wise. It was cheaper here at $2.70 including tax. I found that this beef patty here at Allwyn's was flaky enough but lacked the crispness of the outside dough. As well the filling was too moist or soggy and it was translucent which was off putting. Also, the patty was lukewarm and not piping hot. I came here to try one and then maybe go back in and pick up a dozen. But From the one patty I had. It didn't warrant a purchase of a dozen to take home for future enjoyment. I must say the patty was not bad. However I found it was not the best one I have had in Toronto. I will pick Islands Express Foods for a beef patty in future visits. Recommendations, I suggest you try for yourself as this is a personal preference but I'll stick to some other locations for my beef patty fix.

Not the best Jamaican food I've had, but it still hits when you want that comfort fix. Legacy spot…read morehas better portions and more consistent flavour than the other location. Fried dumplings with oxtail gravy were warm and soft, and the gravy gave it a nice boost. The mix plate had fried chicken with good crunch and oxtail that was tender, but heads up--the oxtail portion is small, so don't expect anything crazy. The gravy ties it all together though. It's not a top-tier spot for me, but definitely worth a visit when the craving hits. Rating: 3 out of 5

The soft opening was on 2023-04-25, and the grand opening will be on 2023-05-19. There many tables for seating, a second seating area half a floor up at the back of the restaurant, an extensive bar, and an event space in the basement. We ordered the following: 1. Jamaican Mule ($10.99). Ginger Beer, Gosling Black Rum. 2. Lily's Passion ($10.99). 2oz Captain Morgan, 2oz passion fruit, 1oz cranberry juice. 3. Peanut Punch ($5.00). 4. Plantain ($3.95). 5. Chicken Roti (13.95). 6. Jerk Chicken & Oxtail Combo ($23.95). 7. Escovitch Fish ($22.00). The service from the waitress and bartender was excellent. The alcoholic drinks were colourful and tasty. The Peanut Punch was in a drinking box from a Caribbean company called Grace. I've had it before. But the waitress suggested it be poured into a tall glass with ice; it was amazing - I highly recommend it! The Plantain appetizer was perfectly cooked and delicious. The Chicken Roti side dish was huge! It is twice as high as any Roti I've ever had before! The chicken inside was succulent. The Jerk Chicken & Oxtail Combo was amazing. You get two sides: we chose rice & peas and coleslaw, two quintessential sides for a Jamaican meal. I feared the Jerk Chicken would be too spicy, but the restaurant wanted to cater to many tastes, so it made it medium spicy (which I could handle). I was told you can add their Real Jerk Hot Sauce yourself or ask the cook to make it extra spicy during the cooking process. The Oxtail was tasty. We also ordered the Escovitch Fish, another popular Caribbean dish. The whole fish is fried, then marinated in a sauce of vinegar, spices, onions, carrots, and peppers. The taste was excellent, and the meat flakes off the bone easily. This dish also come with two sides: we chose coleslaw and steamed vegetables, which came in their own separate bowls. During this restaurant's grand opening, there will be entertainment starting at 15:00, with steel pan, limbo, prizes, and DJ. Starting at 22:00, there is a party. This location has an event space in the basement, which can hold up to 101 people. It can be used for old school parties, karaoke,  spoken word, etc. The parties are to appeal to the older clientele who frequented the Queen and Broadview and Gerrard locations. The Real Jerk started 38 years ago and has moved several times. The most famous location was at Queen and Broadview while they were there for 25 years. This location is owned by a husband and wife team: Cleigh and Natasha. Cleigh's father owns the location on Gerrard St, which became internationally famous due to a music video by Drake and Rihanna. There is a third location in London, England, owned by Cleigh's uncle. There is free WiFi. The restaurant is not currently wheelchair accessible but there will be a ramp to overcome the one step at the entrance. There are separate male/female washrooms in the basement, so they are not wheelchair accessible. There is paid neighbourhood street parking. Review 2023-142
