It's light dough surrounding a beef patty that is topped with this tasty chicken and slaw. Tasty messy.

Greeted warmly by nice staff. Tbb I like the run down hole in the wall look of these places, somehow makes the food more authentic. Cash o ly, $10.75 for this tasty sandwich.

This place was a little off of the Toronto area but definitely glad we tried it. The place is very simple looking, almost like a deli but they have really good food. We decided to try their stuffed sandwich which includes a Jamaican beef pattie cut open, filled with slaw and jerk chicken, all enclosed by a coco bun. It sounds stuffed but it was really good. I love the various textures that each bite comes in and it tasted yummy. Oh and this sandwich only cost around $6 and it was very filling. Apparently they had to use a different bread from the one they originally use and we heard mixed reviews on it but we like what we got :) We also got an order of plantains and those were yummy as well. I wish I had more room in my tummy to try more food but definitely will be back to try other food here in the future

    1lb Jerk chicken & 1lb jerk wings

Neighborhood gem located in the corner of a strip plaza (as long as you don't mind the lack of interior decor) , this place is a great takeout spot for some good jerk chicken. Service is always quick & friendly. Remember it's **CASH ONLY** I went to grab 1lb of jerk chicken & 1lb of jerk wings on a Sunday night and the total came to just under $30 w/tax. This portion was able to feed 2 of us for dinner & have leftovers. They do give the sample cups of their homemade spicy sauce for free but I highly recommend you spend the extra $3 for the full size - can use it for days. **must like spicyness** Looking forward to the next take out !! **would be 5 stars but lowered it due to the Cash only option & lack of interior decor

Long ago I saw an article in the newspaper listing the best patties in Toronto and this was listed. So since I was in the area, I thought I would give it a try. The restaurant is pretty much a take out place, or at least when we went. Well, had to try the patty. This was not flaky as it should be. The crust was almost bordering on being a pastry. The jerk pork sandwich was just OK. The curried goat and rice were also just OK. The curry flavour could have been better. Will not return.

Curries chicken roti with metal staple.

Normally I would give this business five stars as I have been there numerous times. Tonight was a little different, I got a roti as I often do only this time it came with an added side of metal staple. I bit into this ¾ through and cut up my inside cheek. As such I will no longer be going to this establishment. I'm sure that this is an anomaly and not something they strive for. I cannot in good conscience write a glowing review which I normally would have. I wish them luck, and I hope that they resolve their quality issues as soon as possible. We should not need to use a metal detector on our food.

Stuffed beef patty with jerk chicken, coleslaw on Coco bread!
    Elaine S.

Ordered a dozen beef patties to go and a stuffed sandwich. The service was pretty fast, they only take cash. It was our first time here and the place got pretty busy. The stuff sandwich had a beef patty filled with coleslaw and jerk chicken and wrapped in Coco bread. We regret not ordering some jerk chicken to go. With all the flavors, the sandwich was very juicy. The jerk sauce had a kick of spice but not overwhelming. The beef patties were filled with meat and definitely hit our patty cravings!

Jerk Pork Sandwich (slaw on the side by request) Tons of meat for the $$, but a little dry and salty.

3.5 rounded up for friendliness, cleanliness and bang-for-buck factor. Overall the Allwyn's on Underhill has been a good take-out buddy during the pandemic upheaval. I don't know if they're slipping a little from the stellar reviews of a few years ago - I thought most items were OK taste wise but didn't "hit it out of the park " on any one thing, but I also didn't experience any of the big fails that some recent reviews mention. * Curry Goat Roti- 4/5: This was their best thing. Meat was tender and falling apart, seasoning was aromatic but didn't overpower the meat, it leaned more toward "comforting" than "exciting" but not bland by any means. Portion wise - it doesn't look big but it was about 30% HEAVIER than any wrapped meal you can get around her due to the high meat ratio * Jerk Chicken Roti- 3.5/5: Similar value factor as the Goat, not quite as yummy - lacks some dimensions compared to the best - it falls on the smoky, mesquite-ish end of the Jerk spectrum but still within authentic parameters. Enough heat to enhance the flavour while not being a problem for most people. * Goat Soup (Manish Water)- 4/5. Occasional daily special - you get a Liter tub for $3! Not as good as North African styles of Goat/Lamb soup but the best I've had of the Islands variety. NOT for everyone - those who dislike thick, porridge-like soups with strands of cooked down meat and chewey knodel bits will want to avoid this. But I find it an aromatic and filling bowl of comfort. * Jerk Pork Sandwich- 2/5: Least successful item. Partially my fault as I asked for Coleslaw on the side (I don't care for creamy slaw in bread...) but it made for a dry sandwich. I expect some sauce or gravy, but no. It was also a bit too salty. On the plus side, they give a very generous amount of meat for a one-handed $5 sandwich (even more than Pho Metro's Bao) and some would appreciate the leaner cuts of pork. Not bad, but I wouldn't repeat. * Service: Big plus! For those who approach Island eateries with negative anticipation of flaky or gruff service - forget it - doesn't happen here. Same guy has worked the front every night I've been here the last 2.5 years (probably the franchise manager) and he's super cool & friendly. * Shop: True to segment - like most Caribbean food joints, it's cramped and looks like the lunchroom of a small plumbing supply company not meant to be seen by visitors ...but isn't that part of the charm of these places?? And despite garage sale styling, the front is clean and the open kitchen is even cleaner. I've never been here that somebody wasn't hard at work cleaning the kitchen. The metal surfaces gleam as bright as their age will permit. Located in the quiet Donwood Plaza on Underhill with tons of free parking, Allwyn's is open later than other Caribbean joints in the Lawrence & Eglinton stretch and often serves past the posted closing time. Not really a food destination, but a solid choice for locals and passers-by.

I've read many favourable reviews about this place so when I found myself in the neighbourhood, I had to try it out. It's almost hidden in a corner of the plaza, with the windows covered with enlarged copies of Yelp reviews, all good of course. The two main dishes I use to judge Jamaican restaurants is curry goat and patties, two staples of Jamaican cuisine. Unless you've eaten jerk IN Jamaica, you haven't tasted jerk so I rarely ever order it from a restaurant outside of Jamaica. I ordered a spicy beef patty and a small curry goat, served with rice and peas and coleslaw (optional). I confirmed that they make their own patties before ordering. The server sorted through a few patties before choosing one for me. Huh? The pastry looked good, with a nice colour and texture that didn't flake or crumble when I handled it but it was a little floppy. First bite, it was kinda soggy and the pastry was a bit chewy, almost like it had been microwaved. The filling had the spice level that I expected but it didn't have much flavour. I would have preferred a little more texture (coarser grind) in the meat. Although it looked decent, this patty failed in several ways. The curry goat took me back to a childhood memory. Have you ever had stew out of a can? That's what it reminded me of. No, it wasn't a good memory. This curry goat just didn't have the right colour, smell, taste, or texture. Carrots? Which proper Jamaican puts carrots in their curry? This dish needed more curry and/or a different blend of curry. It was either cooked too long or I got the mush from the bottom of the pot. This was a definite failure. I don't know the background of all these four and five star reviewers but, as a Jamaican, I can tell you that the food I had does not properly represent Jamaican cuisine. I'm so disappointed, I'm struggling to give them even two stars. Unfortunately, there just wasn't enough for me to want to come back.

This is our go-to place for jerk chicken. We recently visited today as we were in the mood for Jerk food. We usually get one large jerk chicken box - comes with coleslaw and rice and beans. The jerk chicken is deliciously spiced, cooked to perfect moistness and has no bones! Makes eating a lot easier. Rice and beans are fluffy and they usually pour their ox tail gravy over it for free - so tasty. The coleslaw is very fresh and creamy. We love it so much that we normally get a small side of it (it's still quite a bit). 5/5. The only thing we didn't like is their beef patty. I'm not sure if we had a bad batch today but the patty was not crispy or fluffy, quite the opposite. We found the pastry itself quite doughy and gummy. The meat inside was good but the seasoning was more tangy than we were used to. I will have to try it again to ensure their patties are always like this before lowering the score. In the past we have had their jerk pork sandwich (beef patty with jerk pork and coleslaw inside a coco bun). It is really good but we found the coco bun and the patty to be a lot of carbs. Other delicious items are jerk chicken wings ( usually weekend only). Super flavorful with the perfect amount of spice. Price is great for what you get. Can easily feed two for under $20 for lunch. We will definitely be back for more jerk food here but probably pass on the patties for now unless they change their recipe.

I am not sure how people are saying this Caribbean Restaurant is one of the best? VERY MISLEADING Unfortunately Kings Bakery was closed yesterday i was about to leave until this young couple recommended to eat at Allwyns Jamaican Restaurant, they continued to say how delicious the food is so I decided to give it a try. Its asian owned restaurant...the customer service was excellent the food smelt delicious looking around the restaurant they have great reviews posted up for you to read. I couldnt wait to try there food, I ordered 2 large jerk chicken dinners and 2 beef pattys went home to eat and man was i disappointed !! The food was lacking in taste drastically, it didnt taste like Caribbean food at all. The rice and coleslaw had no flavor and the chicken..it was clear they use old chicken and not fresh chicken they also over salt it so your unable to tell the chicken they use is OLD. Wont be returning and wouldnt recommend.

No where else in Canada does Caribbean food like Toronto does. It's such a signature cuisine of the city and I would recommend to anyone who visits Toronto that they must eat some. There are so many good options! However Allwyn's is one of the most legendary. With four locations in the city, you'll find the original one in York Mills, tucked away in an unassuming strip mall (the best type of place for this sort of thing). The blue and white signage out front announces "Patties, Jerk Chicken, Ox Tail and Curry." blogTO calls Allwyn's the #1 Best Jerk Chicken in the city which meant that I had to try it. I visited on a Saturday evening and was pleased by the hole-in-the-wall vibe of the restaurant. Don't expect much in terms of decor - the walls mainly feature white tiles and posters of the menu. You do not require more than this. All that you need from this establishment is the incredible food. The menu is straight forward and includes all of the classics that you want. You'll find some different sandwiches, patties (of course), rice & peas dishes, roti, and basically all of the jerk meat that you could ever dream of. To the right of the counter you'll find a refrigerator packed with every flavour of Grace Island Soda. After considering the options I chose the Kola Champagne. This flavour was invented in Puerto Rico and tastes a lot like cream soda. Unfortunately, it has nothing to do with actual champagne! The guy working behind the counter was very friendly and he prepared my order at lightening speed. Before I knew it, I was out the door and shoving sweet, sweet jerk in my face. As a bit of a side order, I wanted to try the Fried Plantain ($2.95). You can't go wrong with these golden-fried banana-family babies. Piping hot and fried to perfection, plantain are starchier than their banana cousins. This makes them well-suited to more savoury preparations. These ones were sweet and delicious, a wonderful side that goes with everything. I loved dipping them in Allwyn's green hot sauce because spicy-sweet might be the greatest combo. High on the priority list: JERK CHICKEN! Their tagline is "The best jerk... Nothing else even comes close." So... You get the jerk! Obviously. Native to Jamaica, jerk is a style of cooking in which meat is dry-rubbed with a hot spice mixture that typically includes allspice and Scotch bonnet peppers. Allwyn's will be happy to sell you straight-up jerk meat (they do pork as well as chicken) but I decided to go the Jerk Chicken Rice & Peas ($10.65 for large) so that it would eat more like a meal. I can't beat about the bush on this one - this really was the best jerk that I've ever tasted. It's already haunting my dreams and causing me massive cravings. The chicken was absolutely perfect. It was unbelievably tender, deliciously seasoned, and packed a shameless punch of spice. Each bite was more delicious than the last. This chicken is exactly what jerk is supposed to taste like and it might as well be from Jamaica. I was also very pleased with the rice & peas (which is actually made with kidney beans and not peas at all). The ideal accompaniment. I didn't expect that there would be coleslaw on the side and it was excellent as well. Ultra creamy and a perfect way to add some crunch and to cool down some of the heat. This whole container was perfect and I want more. Now. I was not done yet. Not with the Stuffed Sandwich (Patty, jerk meat & coleslaw in coco bread - $5.85) on the menu calling my name. This is your new life. So let's break it down. They take warm and pillowy-soft coco bread (a starchy and slightly sweet bread that is made with coconut milk) and they stick a patty of your choice in there (spicy beef always!). Then they crack the patty open and shove some of their incredible jerk chicken in there and top it all off with creamy coleslaw. I MEAN... This sandwich (Jamaican taco?) situation has it all. It's spicy and crunchy with tender meat. Literally every element in this thing is exactly right. It should also be noted that the patties at Allwyn's come from Fahmee Bakery in Scarborough, the undisputed king of patties in this city. This review might sound pretty rave-y but I think that Allwyn's deserves it. The food was everything that I wanted it to be; authentic, tasted amazing, and all done in such a simplistic way. The prices are reasonable, although it should be noted that only cash is accepted. If I could marry this jerk chicken I probably would.

    Disappointed, so disappointed

I have been going regularly to Allwyns for 14 years. I asked for curry goat with rice and instead of the goat gravy, I asked for oxtail gravy over the goat and rice. Then I repeated the part about oxtail gravy. Got home, no gravy period, and the rice was watery and overcooked. Wasted my time and .. ..

I ordered the stuffed sandwich with jerk chicken (spicy). It had a great spice level and was delicious. I wish the coleslaw was spread throughout the sandwich better. It also seemed to be a vinaigrette type, I would have preferred a creamy version instead to complement the yummy jerk chicken. I would order it again but perhaps make a note of more slaw if you get the spicy version!

After that, I really sold it to my wife and she was excited. We initially arrived at Chubby's and there was only bar seating available. As luck would have it, it was raining that Wednesday evening . I called just after 6:30 pm to see if we needed a reservation and the hostess said we didn't. We get there not 30 minutes later and there is only bar seating. Hearing that, my wife was highly disappointed and so was I. Quit frankly, I was going to go next door to Cafe Renee. But Zac was not having that. He checked a couple of times and found us a table. I was so relieved and my wife continued her enthusiasm. Zac showed us to our table and I swear I attempted to pay for accommodating us and he refused. The lovely Valentina was our server and she was delightful because she understood pace and flow. We ordered the Saltfish Fritters which were a great introduction to the restaurant. I had multiple Buffalo Soldier cocktails and my wife had multiple Rum Punches. We then ordered Jerk Chicken and Jerk Shrimp with rice and peas as our meal. Both were delicious. I also had a serving of plantains, and they were the best plantains I had ever eaten. I was amazed at how light the crunch was on the outside. A skill in itself! Finally, we had the Bread Pudding for dessert. Again...perfection. Zac was phenomenal and I appreciated his effort. We tried a variety of dishes to varying degrees of enjoyment. Let's start with the good - we enjoyed the saltfish fritters, the Jamaican patties, the beef roti, and the fried bananas the most. They were balanced and very flavorful. The beef roti specifically looked like a giant burrito, but the beef within was so tender and well seasoned. We also really enjoyed the banana fritters which tasted like deep fried banana bread. As for the plates missing the mark - The jerk chicken was pretty tender but our two pieces were also pretty charred so we had to remove most of the skin where most of the rub would have been. Additionally, the goat curry and the oxtail were borderline inedible especially after we ran out of coleslaw which was its saving grace to making each bite palatable. It was so salty otherwise! There were also a lot of small bone fragments to work through on each dish. It wasn't necessarily that these dishes tasted bad but it was just impossible to enjoy due to the salt content. The staff at Simone's was very kind though. I could also tell that they made everything fresh and at order so I can appreciate the effort even though it didn't quite meet my expectations.

Their menu consists of a variety of items including curry rotis, paratha, curry rice dishes, jerk chicken, stew (chicken or oxtail), fish, soups, patties, as well as doubles. You are also able to pay by cash or card (if using card there is a service fee though!). Entering the space, you walk down the restaurant until you hit the cashier. You order your items there where you can eat it for here or to go. I've only gotten their doubles here but they are a pretty big portion and they taste great (you can choose your level of spicy and they also have a tamarind chutney as well). I've seen people eating their rotis there and the portions are pretty big. Service is no frills and the staff are friendly. This is a no frills place where you come for the good food. Overall, I definitely will return whenever I am in the area!

I got the curry chicken which I thoroughly enjoyed the flavor of the chicken inside, my problem was with the roti. As I cut more into the roti, it looked as though it wasn't cooked properly like patches of dry flour throughout to the point it didn't look appealing. I also grabbed a double which I enjoyed, they are much bigger than the ones I get at home in Va. I never had a Trini soda ~ Solo kola champagne which tastes very similar to the Jamaican version. The gentleman at the front counter was very nice and patient. The decor was definitely a Trini island feel. Bright colors and hand painted pictures. They have seating available for dine-in experience.

Fried dumplings with oxtail gravy were warm and soft, and the gravy gave it a nice boost. The mix plate had fried chicken with good crunch and oxtail that was tender, but heads up--the oxtail portion is small, so don't expect anything crazy. The gravy ties it all together though. It's not a top-tier spot for me, but definitely worth a visit when the craving hits. Rating: 3 out of 5

The soft opening was on 2023-04-25, and the grand opening will be on 2023-05-19. There many tables for seating, a second seating area half a floor up at the back of the restaurant, an extensive bar, and an event space in the basement. We ordered the following: 1. Jamaican Mule ($10.99). Ginger Beer, Gosling Black Rum. 2. Lily's Passion ($10.99). 2oz Captain Morgan, 2oz passion fruit, 1oz cranberry juice. 3. Peanut Punch ($5.00). 4. Plantain ($3.95). 5. Chicken Roti (13.95). 6. Jerk Chicken & Oxtail Combo ($23.95). 7. Escovitch Fish ($22.00). The service from the waitress and bartender was excellent. The alcoholic drinks were colourful and tasty. The Peanut Punch was in a drinking box from a Caribbean company called Grace. I've had it before. But the waitress suggested it be poured into a tall glass with ice; it was amazing - I highly recommend it! The Plantain appetizer was perfectly cooked and delicious. The Chicken Roti side dish was huge! It is twice as high as any Roti I've ever had before! The chicken inside was succulent. The Jerk Chicken & Oxtail Combo was amazing. You get two sides: we chose rice & peas and coleslaw, two quintessential sides for a Jamaican meal. I feared the Jerk Chicken would be too spicy, but the restaurant wanted to cater to many tastes, so it made it medium spicy (which I could handle). I was told you can add their Real Jerk Hot Sauce yourself or ask the cook to make it extra spicy during the cooking process. The Oxtail was tasty. We also ordered the Escovitch Fish, another popular Caribbean dish. The whole fish is fried, then marinated in a sauce of vinegar, spices, onions, carrots, and peppers. The taste was excellent, and the meat flakes off the bone easily. This dish also come with two sides: we chose coleslaw and steamed vegetables, which came in their own separate bowls. During this restaurant's grand opening, there will be entertainment starting at 15:00, with steel pan, limbo, prizes, and DJ. Starting at 22:00, there is a party. This location has an event space in the basement, which can hold up to 101 people. It can be used for old school parties, karaoke,  spoken word, etc. The parties are to appeal to the older clientele who frequented the Queen and Broadview and Gerrard locations. The Real Jerk started 38 years ago and has moved several times. The most famous location was at Queen and Broadview while they were there for 25 years. This location is owned by a husband and wife team: Cleigh and Natasha. Cleigh's father owns the location on Gerrard St, which became internationally famous due to a music video by Drake and Rihanna. There is a third location in London, England, owned by Cleigh's uncle. There is free WiFi. The restaurant is not currently wheelchair accessible but there will be a ramp to overcome the one step at the entrance. There are separate male/female washrooms in the basement, so they are not wheelchair accessible. There is paid neighbourhood street parking. Review 2023-142
