Wanted to try this place for a while now. The chicken soup was okay, just potatoes, carrots and dumpling. Curry goat was perfectly spiced and tasty. The roti was hard and chewy, disappointing. Cod fritters were probably day old and hardish with little fish and way too much pepper, could not eat and I'm a "spice girl". Not greasy though. Cole slaw and plantain were perfection. Expensive. Came to Simone's after our cousins recommended Jamaican cuisine of all things while in Toronto. Officially they recommended a place in Markham but that was a bit out of the way and a quick search for Jamaican in Toronto brought up Simone's on most every list. We tried a variety of dishes to varying degrees of enjoyment. Let's start with the good - we enjoyed the saltfish fritters, the Jamaican patties, the beef roti, and the fried bananas the most. They were balanced and very flavorful. The beef roti specifically looked like a giant burrito, but the beef within was so tender and well seasoned. We also really enjoyed the banana fritters which tasted like deep fried banana bread. As for the plates missing the mark - The jerk chicken was pretty tender but our two pieces were also pretty charred so we had to remove most of the skin where most of the rub would have been. Additionally, the goat curry and the oxtail were borderline inedible especially after we ran out of coleslaw which was its saving grace to making each bite palatable. It was so salty otherwise! There were also a lot of small bone fragments to work through on each dish. It wasn't necessarily that these dishes tasted bad but it was just impossible to enjoy due to the salt content. We got the jerk chicken with rice & peas and braised oxtail with Johnny cakes. The chicken was moist and flavourful but not as much heat as I would have expected. The oxtail was very saucy and tender. Actually goes better with the rice cause of the sauce! First time trying Johnny cakes and they didn't disappoint! They are kind of like a corn bread but more dense and lightly fried. Addictive but they fill you up! I was surprised they give you 5 cakes even as a side! There are a few Caribbean spots in the area and this is the best one in my opinion. Simone's straddles the fine line between home-cooked simplicity and higher-end quality. Dropped by for an early dinner and got: - Jerk chicken with a side of plantains: The spice on the chicken was on point (i.e., not about just heat but more about the flavours). Also, 1/4 lb for $7 was a competitive price. The side plantains, meanwhile, were just how I like them - sweet but not artificially so, and soggy not crispy. - Braised oxtail with a side of johnny cakes: Would have liked the oxtail to be a bit less chewy and more fall-off-the-bone, but it was tasty. The johnny cakes, meanwhile, were fried really well as they were crispy on the outside while still being fluffy on the inside. If I'm in the mood for Caribbean food in the area, Simone's is definitely the spot I'm going to. read more

When we decided to move to Toronto from Vancouver, one thing that was at the top of our list was to eat lots of Caribbean food and specifically curry goat. We did not painstakingly search through all of Toronto's Caribbean restaurants to choose THE ONE, but rather we were in the area and we decided to go to the best rated place that was nearby. On this occasion, that was Simone's. The curry goat did not disappoint. Generous helping of tender meat with flavours that were infused all the way through to the bone, and rice and Peas! Mmmm.... What a fantastic combination. Thoroughly enjoyed the food. Service was their biggest downfall and the ambiance was so-so... I was pleasantly surprised by how good this place was. After seeing over 2000+ reviews on Google, I was skeptical that it could be overhyped but it deserves the hype! First of this place has THE BEST GRAVY I'VE EVER TASTED. Period. I've had a bunch of gravy in my life but this was so flavourful and had a slight thickness to it which I loved. Some gravies are way too runny and the rice soaks it all up. Next, the chicken was good, but once you got to the actual meat, it tasted pretty plain (good thing I had gravy!) As for the festivals, I was also surprised, they were a unique shape that I haven't seen before but they were so buttery and warm. And paired with the gravy?! OMG I would go back just for the festivals. They're that good, just make sure you eat them when they're fresh. Realistically I'd like to give this place a 5 star rating but I had to knock points off for the chicken. A bit more flavour on there and it's a 5 star for me! read more

Simone's is a cozy little place on the Danforth serving all the staples from the Caribbean. I actually found the heat on the jerk chicken formidable compared to other restaurants in the area, which is not a bad thing, just a pointer to those who like the habanero :) The chicken was perfectly moist on the inside, and the spice on the outside was not a dry rub, but rather saucy, so load up on the napkins! Along with the chicken, I also sampled a couple of sides including the chana and the sauteed veggies. The chana (chickpeas) themselves I found to be overpowered by turmeric, but the veggies were perfectly seasoned and lovely. This jerk chicken though, is calling me back for seconds. read more

I came here after reading all the great reviews and was thoroughly disappointed. We got the curry chicken roti with potatoes and the jerk chicken. The portions are fairly big and will fill you up more than you expect. The curry chicken was so bland and watery. It made my roti very soggy at the bottom. The potatoes were cut into big chunks so it was completely bland in the centre. It felt like I was eating a ~mild chicken soup~ wrap. The jerk chicken on the other hand was way too salty and very dry. There was basically no jerk sauce on it. I almost thought I was eating a Loblaws rotisserie chicken with some extra spices. The rice and peas were amazing though. It was perfectly cooked and I could taste the coconut and the other spices. TLDR: Don't come here. I have been ordering from this Amazing Authentic Jamaican restaurant since February of this year. I was a big fan of another Jamaican restaurant but Simone has so many delicious offerings. Vegetarian options, Meat only options. Boil Dumplings and Green Bananas! I think they are one of the only Caribbean restaurants that of this especially with Ackee and Salt Fish. Their price is extremely reasonable for the amount of food they serve. o Look forward to the day I can experience the actual restaurant atmosphere. I'm always overjoyed when there are vegetarian options anywhere, and was especially happy to try Simone's chana and callaloo roti since I hadn't seen this combo on other menus just yet. The order comes with a simple green salad or coleslaw, and while it wasn't a highlight, it's always nice to get something extra with your meal. As for the roti itself, it was delicious. The chana and callaloo is just the perfect blend. There were some huge hunks of potato in the mix that I could have done without, but overall it was yummy and something I would order again. That Umbrella Guy @ Simone's Caribbean Service was great. Waitresses were friendly and explained what the dishes were since I wasn't particularly familiar with this kind of cuisine. Things like "Jack Cakes" and "Ackee" were new terms to me. I ordered the "Ackee and Saltfish" with a side of dumplings, having never heard of the dish before and seeing that it is the "national dish of Jamaica". Personally I found the salt fish a bit too salty, though I mean...it is salt fish I guess, so some degree of saltiness is to be expected. The ackee had an interested flavour with a smooth, scrambled-egg-like texture, but when it was mixed with the salty juices in the dish, the salty flavour was too overpowering and I didn't like it as much. The dumplings were the caribbean variety, so it was just flour on flour with no other fillings. It was ok, but I liked the jack cakes that someone else ordered more. I'm sure the dish is great; the flavours just didn't work for me since it was all too salty. Next time I'll try getting their chicken. read more

worst service ever. a stew chicken took 35minutes. The owner, who didn't serve me, took upon herself to explain why is took so long even though I don't ask for an explanation. when I said the person who came ahead of me got their order before me she got agitated. I had no desire to debate, when I calmly asked for my food, she told a co worker to " mark my face" and don't serve me again. lololol. like I have any desire to go back to this place. first and last time. some people should not be in the service industry. read more

Family-owned spot with friendly service and reasonably-priced food. What's not to love? I got the curry goat roti with a side of plantains. All meals come with either a side of coleslaw or salad. Oh yeah, I wanna go back already. Sadly I didn't grab photos because I gobbled it up. We had the curried goat roti and the jerk chicken. One time I got the jimmy cakes (yum, like a fluffier festival that's less sweet) and one times I got the banana and dumplings. Food here was absolutely delicious, and the portion sizes were more than generous (had enough left over to pack up for lunch the next day). The service was really friendly also! The only complaint was the long wait for our food to come after ordering (hence the 4 stars instead of 5). After reading a few reviews we decided to try this place. Ordered curry chicken and goat roti. Sadly, the best review possible given our experience... GIVE THIS PLACE A MISS! We ordered from the menu on their website, but when we picked it up we were told that the price was higher. 17% higher in fact. Getting home, we found the food was bland, tasteless and only vaguely spicy. Having lived in, and visited Jamaica and other Caribbean islands, we can say with some certainty that this food is nothing like original Jamaican. Making a bland sauce with a dash of Uncle Joe's is not a curry. Frankly, there are a dozen or more far better Caribbean food places in the city, and they are much less expensive, without misleading websites. read more

I'm not giving a low score because of the food. I ate the red snapper and it was delicious. This is not my first time eating at Simone's. I'm a fairly regular customer and as always the food was great but the customer service was poor. My first issue is that you have to order at the counter for dinning in at the restaurant. Second, dinning in while eating out of plastic takeout containers using plastic utensils is not acceptable and not environmentally friendly. Third I was asked to pay my bill in advance, even though I was dinning in. At this point I still gave a 20% tip. Fourth and most egregious was when I asked for some hot pepper sauce to eat with my food and they said I have to pay $1.50 extra. That is like charging for mustard and ketchup at a burger joint. Who does this...no one! I then went on and said I don't need a container can I please just have a squirt of hot pepper sauce on the side and the staff still replied no. I asked the staff to reconsider this decision and talk to the owner about my request. The staff went in the kitchen and when she came out still insisted no that I had to pay $1.50 extra for hot pepper sauce. This is just so petty and extremely poor customer service. This is outrageous and terrible customer service!!! Out of principle, as a regular customer, who supported this small business during the pandemic, I will NOT return and take my money elsewhere. Portions were very large so I only ate about half - good value overall. My boyfriend had the jerk chicken which he thoroughly enjoyed. Service was very friendly and prompt. Simone's really spices things up by being one of the few Caribbean restaurants in the GTA where you can sit and enjoy a flavourful meal with plates, cutlery and all. Greektown isn't short on variety and this place is no exception. Whether you are staying or taking your food away, ordering here is nothing short of a classic experience, complete with furniture and decor that looks transported straight from a tiny island resort. Must-try items: Jerk chicken Curry Goat Cole slaw/Rice and peas I'd been trying to check this place out for a while and finally made it in the late evening. You don't find many restaurants open until 11:00pm on a weekday, far less for ones that serve roti or festivals. Everything about this place is as laid back as you'd expect, in a good way. Jerk chicken was a no-brainer, and it doesn't disappoint at all. The curry goat is some of the most tender, well-seasoned meat I've sampled before. Simone definitely cooks with love and authenticity. 'Aunties home cooking' comes to mind, right down to the presentation. Meat dishes seem to be their specialty, so I plan to try everything else on the menu. There is a patio in both the front and back of the restaurant, which expands choices for customers. My only issue was that all the windows and doors were open, leading to a bit of a nuisance with some unwanted flying guests. It would be nice if they could do something about that. While I've never actually been to Simone's I've had their take out brought home a number of times by my wife that works in the area. To date I've had the jerk chicken, chicken and potato stuffed roti and the ox tail. The jerk chicken is done right. I have a Trini friend that makes jerk chicken and it's pretty much the same which is spicy, fall off the bone goodness that must have been cooking for a while stewing in all that nom nom. The jerk chicken is well spiced in that yes if you can't handle the spiciness (not necessarily hot but definitely a kick) then you probably won't enjoy this dish. My wife can't handle too much spice so she can't eat this dish but damn it's good and I wish I could explain to her what she's missing. The chicken roti is also good but I don't know if there's a gravy available or not but if there is I don't get any whenever she brings it home. It's got that nice flavor and it also has a spice kick, again not necessarily hot for somebody like me but yes the flavor is there. I found some pieces of chicken in here to be big and some of the white meat pieces to be large and thick which because of their size and because of how white meat is seemed to be dryer. Still, a very good roti serving as well as great tasting. I will ask her next time if there's gravy or not. My wife who can't handle too much spice can eat this dish. The ox tail is very good. Yes it's a dish that has bones and that really fatty stewed meat not exactly fall of the bone but definitely that sticky texture that you have to work off the bones. Yummy is an understatement. This dish is not as spicy as the other two so my wife can eat this and enjoys it. I had my first roti at a restaurant that shall remain nameless. It was bland, and I thought maybe vegetarian roti were just like that. Until I had Simone's vegetable roti. Amazing! Callaloo, chick peas, other delicious ingredients and a fabulous sauce made a complex and mild flavour that I finished way fast. And there were three other vegetarian roti on the menu. The decor is tropical and intimate, the service casual and comfortable. A great local find. Oxtail and jerk chicken was very average, I really don't know the what the hype is about. The jerk chicken on Eglinton is much better so I'm not sure how some are claiming this is the best jerk in the city. I don't think so! Cod fritters were the worst dish for me. A ton of breading and very little fish. Like VERY LITTLE. Also the little fish that there was had a slight reddish colour. Cod is white fleshed so I found that strange. Maybe some kind of marinade? The Johnny cakes were decent and well seasoned. Service We sat down and was informed someone will clean our table shortly. Approximately 10 minutes passed when we got fed up and waved someone down. We ordered right away. It took them 22 minutes to realized they misplaced our order. Another 15 minutes past when someone came by to apologize and it'll be another 2 minutes. 10 minutes later I'm starting this review. This is the best Caribbean food I've tasted since I moved to Canada! I have always found myself enjoying the food and service here. I also love seeing the diverse type of customers who visit the restaurant (eat-in or take out). I took my siblings who live overseas to Simone's and they both loved every part of their meal. This place is ideal & worth every dollar if you are on a budget (like most of us). I live by Jane & Sheppard and I would gladly travel all the way to Greektown to eat here! read more

Very disappointing. Baffles the mind that the food here would have 5*. The food is very, very mediocre. That's both compared to actual places in Jamaica and Jamaican places in Toronto (North of Eglinton). I hate the Jerk chicken plate and my girlfriend had the Oxtail, because she loves Oxtail so much. This Oxtail was one of the worst I've tried. Greasy, sloppy, sinewy with slimy sauce. Even the Oxtail at Island Foods on King West is better than this one, though my Caribbean friends expressed disdain for that one too. The jerk chicken was burned, tasteless and looked overall dirty. The rice and beans that came with it were dry and lukewarm. The ambiance is clean as most Caribbean places in town are greasy holes in the wall. This one is clean. For the people giving 5* to this food: do yourself a favor and try Island Foods on King West, it is not the best in T.O but much better than this one. Two stars for cleanliness. read more
