Grilled salmon has a crispy texture on the surface, with a slight sweetness, while the skin is only lightly seared, keeping a soft touch that adds depth to its taste. The lamb curry is a bit tangy but acceptable, though it's somewhat disappointing with too many bones and not much value for the price. Any time I am in Toronto, Caribbean food is a must for me. And if it's Jamaican, all the better. I tend to go outside of downtown for Jamaican dishes, but decided that while I was knocking about in the downtown area that I would stop by The Diner's Corner. I opted for the brunch buffet so that I could sample a few dishes. Having my paternal side of the family from Jamaica had already exposed me to lot of Jamaican staples, so I find it a better route to try several menu items rather than a fixed menu. I had brown stew chicken, ackee, saltfish, rundown, callalou, plantains, and a little bit of a lot else. My water glass stayed full and used plates were removed as soon as I went for more food. This was one of the first times that a cultural restaurant in the heart of downtown had authenticity in the dishes. It became apparent when I passed the kitchen and heard patois. Not that patois was an indication of genuine flavor, given some cultural restaurants will compromise flavor for certain palates, but an elder speaking it is an elder who will serve you food as it should taste. read more

We weren't sure and were looking for a menu in the window but the gentleman at the door convinced us we should come in and take a look around. We looked at the menu, and decided to stay and we're sure glad we did. The server was extra friendly and very helpful with describing the dishes. Prices were right. I ordered the fried chicken and my friend ordered the oxtail. We both enjoyed them very much. My favourite jerk chicken used to be from this place inside a run down food hall off of Queen West. When the hall closed, I was devastated. Jerk chicken is by far my favourite preparation of chicken, and despite there being lots of great jerk options in the city, none met the bar set by that place. None until now. I popped into The Diner's Corner mostly out of curiosity. I'd never noticed it before, and Jamaican food always gets my attention. This place is terrific. The staff is super friendly, the jerk chicken is miles beyond what I've gotten used to downtown, and the price is right. Do yourself a favour and take a trip here. If I hadn't eaten not long before, I'd have got the meal, which includes rice and beans. You can tell this place is proud of the food it serves - no doubt everything on the menu is delicious. We happened along The Diner's Corner looking for something reasonable and different. The Diner's Corner met both criteria. The brown chicken stew was really tasty; nice freshly shredded coleslaw and the hot sauce tasted like it was just made. My wife had the jerk chicken, which she found quite flavourful. She didn't even notice the mild heat until after she was done. It is definitely a place we will come back to again as there are several more interesting things we want to try on their menu. I have faithfully supported Diner's Corner for several years, but I can't any longer. I can no longer afford to pay $25 for a modest-size jerk chicken meal. I can no longer afford to pay $8.50 for 6 slices of plantain! Why should 3 spoonfuls of rice and peas, a chicken leg, and a pinch of salad cost $25 before tax?? Why should 6 slices of plantain cost $8.50 before tax? Why? Such pricing is unsustainable! That's a prime example of pricing yourself out of the market! I am aware that Yonge Street rent rates are extremely high, but at the same time the current prices at Diner's Corner would force regulars to look elsewhere for a bellyful. The vast majority of people that would patronize such a restaurant are not wealthy. Therefore, with such pricing a customer would likely not return or come in the first place! Our service experience was really not up to par. We came to the restaurant on a Wednesday and was the second seated table around 5:45pm. We placed our order with the server and the server came back to double check with us the order and our chosen sides. When the entrees came out, the server placed the incorrect dish in front of us (we were a party of 2). Also the sides for the entrees were also wrong. The jerk chicken entree was suppose to come with rice and beans while the oxtail stew had the "seasonal vegetables". I believe they offered to take care of the mistake after we brought it to his attention as he was serving it but we decided that was too much effort and waiting for this mistake. We ended up rearrange the plates ourselves to get the order right after they left to attend to other customers. Points given to the food as it tasted like it was made skill and care but I think the price is more reflective of the area. You can find more value for money at other places imo. We ordered the quarter jerk chicken entree and the oxtail stew. Both were savoury and good choices that would make people happy. The spicy chicken jus for the jerk chicken provided some heat and umami flavour. The oxtail pieces were tender and fell off the bone with little effort required. I'm going to come out and say that a garden salad is not reflective of the menu saying "seasonal vegetables". It's a small point but I think it's important. The decor in the restaurant is nice to look at especially the bar section but I don't think that was enough to make up for a very lacklustre experience overall. read more

Lets start with giving credit where due. It's a beautiful space. The initial meet and greet is good as the waiters are friendly. However, I reached out to the establishment via email before posting my review and nothing. If you have a friend who can cook you Caribbean food opt in, try another restaurant or just go get tacos. Don't waste your money or time. I took someone here and was embarrassed. Their quality is going downhill. They serve stale food, the rice and peas was hard and my jerk chicken order was like a rock. For the prices they charge this is unacceptable. The cocktails are water down to the point I took a sip and left it alone. My waiter said "I'll let them know" when I told her my concerns, but no compensation, no can we get you something else? Nothing, only here's your bill and some mints. As she cleared the table of untouched food and drink. Still I paid but it's principal for me. Acknowledge my experience at least. They don't want to learn from their customers. Owners are too prideful to take feedback or even respond. Go anywhere else and get double the amount of food for your money with an establishment that understands their customers are vital to their business. Don't chance it! read more

Went to this place while on vacation in Canada. This was the second restaurant we went to for Jamaican food. The food is more authentic then most. There wasn't a lot of people in the restaurant and it's a good vibe overall. I got a sangria that stated it had three different alcohol, but it tasted like it had barely any alcohol. The oxtail is amazing. The curry goat is amazing. Serving size is about typical. The staff is lackluster. She got my order wrong twice. Do not order the salad with dressing on it. It is drenched and not edible. After I ordered it without dressing, it came with dressing. I asked for extra salad to even out but this was not done. What's my feeling after dining here? A-Ok, which is exactly 3-star. We ordered Callaloo and Ackee & Saltfish. Callaloo, to me, is whole bunch of vegetables cooked in heavy oil. The salted fish in the Ackee & Saltfish is good. However, it took somewhat longer than expected time to get these 2 dishes and I have a feeling that I am paying extra 2 dollars for each dish for the rent on Yonge street, not the food itself. I had an order of Jerk Shrimps as entree, they were extremely great, the spices, the portion, the dressing on veggies; 5/5. I had a Stew chicken plate as dinner and also loved it. I absolutely love Jamaican food deeply. Most Jamaican restaurants in downtown Toronto are terrible and exclude from the menu many exceptional traditional dishes. So many places have dry and terrible rice and jerk meals that are not spicy and basically bullshit. Plus, they use crappy meat cuts and the food can often be, "spit-out" worthy. I've eaten here a bunch of times over the years. They're right around the corner from where I used to work. They even catered a multi cultural event I did once. They were a big hit with the corporate types. THEIR staff is always so gracious. Sadly, the restaurant wasn't busy with customers, yet they operated as if there was heavy traffic. We were part of a big group of 9 and sat on the upper level.
