    Jerk chicken sandwich
    Reh L.

As a Toronto institution for Caribbean food, Allwyn's has quite the reputation and I'm happy to report that it does live up to the hype. I tried the jerk chicken sandwich and a patty - both were fantastic. The sandwich had beautifully juicy spiced chicken with heaps of coleslaw (not too much mayo or vinegar, it was just right) all wrapped up in some pillowy coco bread. The patty was also well done, perfectly flaky and crispy on the outside, nice and doughy on the inside, and filled with perfectly spiced beef. Overall, a great meal - I'll be back for sure.

Take out Jerk Chicken and Curry Chicken BOGO Deal

This is a great takeout spot and keeps well in the fridge so stock up! I particularly love their jerk chicken option. It's just so comforting with the right level of spice accompanied by flavourful rice and the slight sweetness of the coleslaw. Usually, I find places that make coleslaw drowned in sauce more of an afterthought but this coleslaw is great and perfectly pairs the meal. If you're looking to pick up a meal that can keep well in the fridge, this would be a great option. I would buy a couple of meals in advance. Sometimes you'll catch a BOGO deal (might be a first time customer thing).

    Small curry goat dinner

My first experience here was both a hit and miss. We ordered a small curry goat dinner (comes on rice and peas with coleslaw) and the jerk chicken roti. The curry goat was delicious, with the meat falling off the bone and a great flavor. Unfortunately, I found the rice and peas to be bland and soggy (possibly due to the coleslaw?). Wish that the accompaniments lived up to the curry. The jerk chicken roti was much better as an overall experience. Large chunks of yummy chicken in a generous wrap. The only miss was that all the hot sauce was in the middle of the wrap, so it was all of a sudden very spicy when you got to it.

Still maintaining the same top score from my last visit. I am updating to report that I've tried the stuffed sandwich (with a beef patty inside) and found it to be a lot, with the spiced beef filling a bit overwhelming. I'll stick with the standard jerk sandwich moving forward

Can't go wrong with the Jerk Chicken Sandwich here! Spicy, cruncy, smokey jerk chicken balanced with a refreshing bite of coleslaw. Ever since I was introduced to this a few weeks ago I've been getting it at least 3x a week! Every single time, the quality is on point, food is delicious, and price is reasonable! The service is quick and the location is more of a take out spot than dine in. Staff are friendly. What more can you ask for?

Had the jerk chicken, jerk pork, and a beef patty. Well seasoned, super delicious. Convenient place with fast service. Will order and pick up again. Not so much of an eat-in place from the looks of it, but I'm judging from seeing it post pandemic.

I had lunch today at Allwyn's Best Caribbean Jerk. It opened about two months ago. I ordered a curry chicken roti and ate it there. The roti was stuffed with chicken, potato and carrot, which was great. The curry wasn't overpowering. The roti had powdered stuff in between the layers (cornmeal maybe?) that was a bit too much. Though the roti was stuffed, it would have helped to have a bit more sauce to make the roti more enjoyable because of the powdered stuff.

Pork rice and peas and chicken rice and peas, large
    Lilian L.

I'm not sure why the reviews on this place is so bad. The portion size of their food is good, their chicken/pork with rice and peas is amazing, and the price is very reasonable. I agree that the meat patties could have had more meat in it but I'm not sure how much meat is suppose to be in an actual authentic Jamaican patty that's not from North America. It could be just like the Pho situation in North American where there is way more meat in the dish than it ever did in Vietnam. Overall, I love getting food from this place as a quick, cheap, and delicious meal.

jerk pork sandwich - huge serving of juicy pork for the price
    Cathy Z.

Great spot for some super quick cheap eats. They are a take out place with very few bar seating on the side. I tried the jerk pork sandwich and it was great value. The coleslaw was fresh and great addition to the meat. The pork is sliced thick, and you get the juicy meat on every bite. I wished there were more jerk seasoning on the pork, really missing the spice. It's not my favorite jerk spot but still a decent place for a filling meal for less. Would probably come back to try some other items on the list.

    Jerk chicken and plantains

I ordered straight up 1/2 lb jerk chicken with a side of plantains. Good stuff right here. This place is mostly takeout, there's a few stools if you want to eat in though!

Jerk chicken dinner (large size): $13 after tax.
    Lisa T.

Ordered their jerk chicken dinner (large size) for $13 after tax and I'd say it was worth it! Very reasonable pricing for the amount of food you get in the box. This was shared between two people and we were satisfied. Chicken was chopped up and I like how I didn't have to worry about bones or picking it up with my hands to bite it off. The chicken itself is tender and wasn't dry at all! Coleslaw was a nice compliment to the meal and the sauce had the perfect amount of spice. The shop is quite small though, very limited seating so this spot is more of a grab and go. Will definitely come back as I heard their jerk chicken sandwich is also good!

Allwyn's has cropped up at an address that can't seem to hold a business very long. I hope they can break the curse. It's a no frills Caribbean spot serving all the classics (minus ackee fish). It's more of a takeaway spot than a dine in, but they do have limited seating area. I got the half pound of jerk chicken with oxtail gravy. The chicken itself is tender and juicy, without dripping in grease. The oxtail sauce is rich and comforting. Honestly it's pretty standard stuff. The food definitely didn't blow me away, but it hit the spot, it's reasonably priced, and it's quick. I'd come back if I was craving Caribbean food and happened to be in the area, but wouldn't necessarily travel for it. My impression is that most of their sales are through couriers, so there's always that as an option.

Less than half filled beef patty
    Edward C.

First off, I grew up in Scarborough eating patties all my life so I think I know what a good patty taste like. Honestly, I was really disappointed when I had the patty here. As you can see from the photo, the filling was like a half done spread and all I tasted was the dough. No the filling did not pool at the bottom. There was barely any at all, and the dough overpowered the filling. It was not enjoyable and I threw it out. Staff were friendly and service was quick, but I won't be coming back.

After that, I really sold it to my wife and she was excited. We initially arrived at Chubby's and there was only bar seating available. As luck would have it, it was raining that Wednesday evening . I called just after 6:30 pm to see if we needed a reservation and the hostess said we didn't. We get there not 30 minutes later and there is only bar seating. Hearing that, my wife was highly disappointed and so was I. Quit frankly, I was going to go next door to Cafe Renee. But Zac was not having that. He checked a couple of times and found us a table. I was so relieved and my wife continued her enthusiasm. Zac showed us to our table and I swear I attempted to pay for accommodating us and he refused. The lovely Valentina was our server and she was delightful because she understood pace and flow. We ordered the Saltfish Fritters which were a great introduction to the restaurant. I had multiple Buffalo Soldier cocktails and my wife had multiple Rum Punches. We then ordered Jerk Chicken and Jerk Shrimp with rice and peas as our meal. Both were delicious. I also had a serving of plantains, and they were the best plantains I had ever eaten. I was amazed at how light the crunch was on the outside. A skill in itself! Finally, we had the Bread Pudding for dessert. Again...perfection. Zac was phenomenal and I appreciated his effort. I can certainly say from our experience, I understand the many positive reviews and here's another one to add to them!

I had brown stew chicken, ackee, saltfish, rundown, callalou, plantains, and a little bit of a lot else. My water glass stayed full and used plates were removed as soon as I went for more food. This was one of the first times that a cultural restaurant in the heart of downtown had authenticity in the dishes. It became apparent when I passed the kitchen and heard patois. Not that patois was an indication of genuine flavor, given some cultural restaurants will compromise flavor for certain palates, but an elder speaking it is an elder who will serve you food as it should taste.

We tried a variety of dishes to varying degrees of enjoyment. Let's start with the good - we enjoyed the saltfish fritters, the Jamaican patties, the beef roti, and the fried bananas the most. They were balanced and very flavorful. The beef roti specifically looked like a giant burrito, but the beef within was so tender and well seasoned. We also really enjoyed the banana fritters which tasted like deep fried banana bread. As for the plates missing the mark - The jerk chicken was pretty tender but our two pieces were also pretty charred so we had to remove most of the skin where most of the rub would have been. Additionally, the goat curry and the oxtail were borderline inedible especially after we ran out of coleslaw which was its saving grace to making each bite palatable. It was so salty otherwise! There were also a lot of small bone fragments to work through on each dish. It wasn't necessarily that these dishes tasted bad but it was just impossible to enjoy due to the salt content. The staff at Simone's was very kind though. I could also tell that they made everything fresh and at order so I can appreciate the effort even though it didn't quite meet my expectations.

The Peanut Punch was in a drinking box from a Caribbean company called Grace. I've had it before. But the waitress suggested it be poured into a tall glass with ice; it was amazing - I highly recommend it! The Plantain appetizer was perfectly cooked and delicious. The Chicken Roti side dish was huge! It is twice as high as any Roti I've ever had before! The chicken inside was succulent. The Jerk Chicken & Oxtail Combo was amazing. You get two sides: we chose rice & peas and coleslaw, two quintessential sides for a Jamaican meal. I feared the Jerk Chicken would be too spicy, but the restaurant wanted to cater to many tastes, so it made it medium spicy (which I could handle). I was told you can add their Real Jerk Hot Sauce yourself or ask the cook to make it extra spicy during the cooking process. The Oxtail was tasty. We also ordered the Escovitch Fish, another popular Caribbean dish. The whole fish is fried, then marinated in a sauce of vinegar, spices, onions, carrots, and peppers. The taste was excellent, and the meat flakes off the bone easily. This dish also come with two sides: we chose coleslaw and steamed vegetables, which came in their own separate bowls. During this restaurant's grand opening, there will be entertainment starting at 15:00, with steel pan, limbo, prizes, and DJ. Starting at 22:00, there is a party. This location has an event space in the basement, which can hold up to 101 people. It can be used for old school parties, karaoke,  spoken word, etc. The parties are to appeal to the older clientele who frequented the Queen and Broadview and Gerrard locations. The Real Jerk started 38 years ago and has moved several times. The most famous location was at Queen and Broadview while they were there for 25 years. This location is owned by a husband and wife team: Cleigh and Natasha. Cleigh's father owns the location on Gerrard St, which became internationally famous due to a music video by Drake and Rihanna. There is a third location in London, England, owned by Cleigh's uncle. There is free WiFi. The restaurant is not currently wheelchair accessible but there will be a ramp to overcome the one step at the entrance. There are separate male/female washrooms in the basement, so they are not wheelchair accessible. There is paid neighbourhood street parking. Review 2023-142
