It's been a long time since I've been to PJay's. Their food is outstanding but it's a bit out of the way for me to get to. Hmmm, what do I order? Let's see... Curry Goat, Oxtail, Stew Chicken, and Jerk Pork, all with Rice and Peas and Coleslaw. Of course, I had to get some of their patties, ranked as one of the best in Toronto! All the food was delicious, as expected. The portions were generous and prices were very reasonable. The patties were excellent, one of the best in the city! I've known Patrick, the owner, for many years. Our dads were good friends who enjoyed a good game of mah jong. Patrick and I prefer golf. If you love good Jamaican food, give them a try!

the flavours and sauces here go hard and on top of the rice & peas is crazy. i got the double meat combo for $21 and it was packed, you could easily feed 2 ppl with this. they're only open until 6pm so go early in the day to get the best stuff ;)

Rating 3.75/5 Con: -cash only -parking lot is very small and place is easy to miss when driving. The rice and chicken was much better than Chris Jerk. The coleslaw/salad wasn't that good compare to everywhere else. I think the salad was basically pickled cabbage. Compared to Island Flava and Nicey's, the jerk chicken has less flavour, but at least it wasn't dry. The rice however was good because they put enough ox tail sauce on it, so it's a bit on the wetter side, but not soggy, I would say the rice taste better than nicey's and Island Flava. The wait time was much faster than Nicey's Portion size: for $15.50 large I would say it does meet my expectation. I would definitely recommend this over Chris Jerk nearby.

Flavourful and filling! I got the jerk chicken on rice combo which comes with a a piece of jerk chicken, a piece of plantain, and coleslaw salad, on top of rice with beans. It was delicious! I like that they are a local store selling authentic meals. It does feel a little pricey for what you get, but the meal is still quite filling.

When I crave Jamaican food, this is the place I think of! The Jamaican food here is sooooo good. This is definitely a hidden gem in Scarborough, tucked inside a small empty plaza. It's a small store that focuses on the food. I ordered the chicken fricassee and the ox tail. The meat is so juicy and tender, it just falls right off. It is also saucy and full of flavour, and comes with 2 sides, the plantains and the rice and peas. The plantains are the best!!! I've never tasted anything like this. Sadly, you can't order a whole box of these, which I wish they had because I can just eat this for an entire meal. Tip: Go early! They ran out of the rice and peas and the jerk chicken...which I've also tried and loved. They also make amazing patties.

Wow. What a fantastic meal. As others have already pointed out, it is a hidden gem, tucked away in an unassuming strip mall past Huntingwood. I got the mixed dinner combo (oxtail and curried goat on top of rice and peas with a side of slaw) and added a jamaican patty on top of it - which are Randy's patties I believe and was delicious btw. I was hoping to buy an imported ginger beer to complement my meal but unfortunately they dont carry it anymore. My meal came to around $15 and it was absolutely glorious. It is truly only a take-out joint, so no seating. I will be returning way more often since it is within short driving distance of where I work. Highly recommended place!

Scarborough is such a great foodie heaven. Some of the best foods from all nationalities are found here and P Jays is no exception. P Jays has been here for a long time and its been a few years since I've been here to my dismay as they make some fantastic Jamaican fare. Located in a dying old plaza where most of the stores have closed, stands a gem where some delicious oxtail, curried goat and jerk chicken and pork are made. The menu is limited but the stuff they do make is fantastic. I ordered a mixed combo entree of oxtail and jerk chicken over rice and peas accompanied by fried plantains and small salad. Dang it was freaking delicious! The oxtail was ultra tender and the jerk chicken full of flavour over the rice and peas. The meal brought back many memories of my high school and university days...sniff:) The place is really tiny and there are no seats so its definitely a take out place. They also sell patties but I forgot to ask which brand they carry now as they use to be Randy's Patties. Its almost impossible to find as the signage is almost nonexistent so keep an eye out for the old plaza. Trust me, once you find it your taste buds will never forget again:).

    Oxtail Rice and Peas

Overall the food was really good! The Rice and Peas with gravy amazing!! Not giving it 4 stars because of the price... Paid $29 for 1 small jerk chicken dinner and 1 medium oxtail dinner and drinks. Given these were small take-out containers... we both felt it didn't deserve 4 stars. Jerk chicken and oxtail were both good, however my brother and I both felt the Rice and Gravy were definitely above average - mostly the gravy tho. I wouldn't mind coming back again, even tho it was expensive.. but Chris Jerk is still my first choice this type of food. In my opinion, better Rice and Peas, better oxtail, and cheaper price... No recommendation from me, but would return.

P Jays is hidden. Even all these years that I've driven on Kennedy road. The tiny undesirable plaza it resides doesn't appeal to too many people as you see the barebone convenient store, a few chiropractors, an office here and there and less than a handful of take-out restaurants. P Jays is hidden as it doesn't face directly from the main Kennedy road. You have to walk-thru an open internal pathway and during dark nights it can be your trial-runs for the true ghetto-ness of more southern regions of Scarborough. P Jays closes roughly 8pm, so it'll never get dark enough but there might not be too many souls around if you travel alone. 3.5'd Definitely the typical west-indie carribean take out shop setup: old-school analog register, fridge full of west-indie beverages, a basic handwritten blackboard menuboard, swing-door leading to the kitchen, and the hot pepper sauce bottle next to the register. Same old same old. Mix(2 choice of protein $11.00 tax included) - From a choice of Oxtail, Curried Goat, Fricasse Chicken, Jerk Chicken, Stew Peas(Fridays only), I got Jerk Chicken & Curried Goat which came with Rice & Peas, Slaw and a couple pieces of Plantains. Curry Goat has good overall spice flavour not too overwhelming while the meat is tender enough without falling apart on it's own. The Jerk spice on the BBQ Chicken was just as good and the Chicken was BBQ'd nicely. Slaw is a-ok'd. Small complains making the meal hard to chug was that the Rice & Peas were quite mushy. Secondly the Jerk Chicken was chopped into 3 pieces which created some miniscule bone shatters, so please do not chug but rather chew carefully. Enjoy. Ting's brand Old Jamaican Ginger Beer($2.00 tax included) - This is a Jamaican brand Ginger Beer but tasted more like Lemonade sweetness with small hints of Ginger kick. Unlike the ones I've had before where it has enough kick to make Scotch Bonnets feel weak. The sweetness and fizz definitely makes this a Ginger Beer for the uninitiated.

oxtail with rice and peas, coleslaw and plantain $12

I couldn't wait to write this review after finishing my meal. It's hard finding a place that serves up top quality oxtail. I have had my share of oxtail and most places serve them overly salty or the meat is overly fatty with very little meat. Not P Jays though, its done perfectly here. For $12 you get a whole lot of fall off the bone meat, rice and peas which is nicely sauced up so its not dry, a side of coleslaw and finally a nice caramelized plantain which really surprised me (5 Stars). I also tried the beef patty and it was pretty good. Flaky crust and moist meaty center (4 stars) Just like others have said this place is really well hidden. As you drive by you won't find any signs and even if you try using street view on google maps it will not reveal anything. You have to walk into this tunnel-like area to find this place. 4.5 stars

    David T.

You could walk by or drive by P Jays and never notice it. It's located inside an alley in a small plaza on Kennedy Rd just North of Huntingwood Dr in Scarborough. It's really unfortunate because the food is really good authentic Jamaican food. I ordered a small jerk dinner meal ($8.75 tax included) with rice and peas with oxtail gravy over it. The chicken was fantastic, perfectly done skin and seasoning and the meat was tender and juicy. The rice and peas were nice and moist and the oxtail gravy was rich and flavourful. The plantain was also really good. The only thing that wasn't too good was the coleslaw which wasn't creamy enough. If you are looking for good authentic Jamaican food in upper Scarborough at a reasonable price, definitely try out P Jays.

We had the jerk chicken with rice and peas, snapper with brown stew veggies and rice, stuffed oxtail patty...EVERYTHING WAS EXCELLENT! Jerk chicken was tender, full of flavor- great spices with the perfect balance of heat that was experienced throughout the bite, not just on the skin. The Snapper was cooked to order (30 minute wait). Tender, great flavor, not too many bones. Even the fish gravy was made to order as when I asked for more they had to make it. Deliciously worth the wait. The STUFFED OXTAIL PATTY was the star of the show. When they say stuffed, they mean it! This beauty is a creative love song in your mouth that your stomach will thank you for. It's buttery, soft, flaky, flavorful, fatty in the best oxtail kinda ways, and just....YES! You didn't know you needed this in your life but your welcome. This menu item can be a meal that stands on its own as I could only get through half of it as a side. Service was good. Just one young lady at the register holding down two long lines alone. One for the order and payment, and the other for pick up. She did well navigating high demand and customer satisfaction. Tip: Get extra gravy- we got extra oxtail, jerk, and fish and used it. Ambiance is mom & pop. You can eat there, or take it to go. Most people grabbed there's to go. Had we eaten ours there we probably would've ended up doubling our order and waistline. Well... in my Arnold Terminator voice, "I'll Be Back!"

All of the oxtail shredded meat, the cheese, the slaw, and the patty all perfectly come together into a very hearty meal. For its price, it is very filling and extremely tasty. The other thing we had was the Large Jerk Chicken meal. The Jerk Chicken was how I personally would want it. Not too hot, not too salty, not burnt, and spiced just right. The rice & beans proportion to the protein was just a little more than what I would prefer, but it is not a big issue. There was also a piece of bread that we had along with the meal which I enjoyed having. It was tasy and soft bread that perfectly acts to refresh the palate so we can go for another bite out of the Jerk Chicken or the Oxtail patty. What was a little letdown was that the place was a little small and not really primarily setup to accommodate a lot of indoor dining. There was no washroom or at least a place to wash hands. Service was also just alright. It was not bad, but just not among the best service standards that I know. You would need to come in with a lot of patience in waiting to order and waiting for the food to be ready to serve. Between taking orders, the person over the counter would also be occasionally be on the phone answering call inquiries.

I decided to drop by on Saturday, just after noon. It's in a fairly dumpy strip mall on Eglinton Avenue East, just west of Brimley Road, in Scarborough. There is plenty of parking. I parked fairly close to the entrance. A car was illegally parked in front of the business next to Aunt Elsie's. I don't get why folks need to do that when there are so many parking spots. Aunt Elsie's looks like a tiny convenience store from the outside, but looks are deceiving. It's also a small Jamaican grocery store that doubles as a takeout eatery. I was not expecting such an amazing place. I simply wanted patties! I found the Grace jerk chicken patties. They came in mild and hot flavours. I always go with mild when I'm not familiar with how spicy items can be. There are also Allan's and Michidean patties. You know that you are at a decent place. Although I felt like Ms Pac-Man as I moved around a small space with a bunch of folks while trying to physically distance, I looked at all the condiments and spices. This place uses space wisely. The wall of condiments and spices is impressive. I also looked longingly at the chilli peppers. They looked pretty and deadly! The hot foods counter blew me away. You can't help but gawk at all the yummy food options, from various fried fish, to jerk chicken and curry goat while you are in line to pay for your items. I took one look at the salt fish fritters and knew that I needed to try them. I got two. Note to self: Get the oxtail dinner next time. Get more hot items after that. I had a lovely, sweet woman behind the counter get my fritters and cash me out. I paid using my debit card. She also bagged my goodies. I thanked her and wished her a lovely day. The customers at this store are friendly. I loved the vibe. They were courteous and nice, which I'm not necessarily used to in my neck of the woods! I was still full from breakfast. However, I made room to consume a salt fish fritter in my car before I continued running errands. OMG! It was so flavourful. The fish was salted, but not to the point where you feel like you need to down a litre of your favourite beverage afterwards. It was seasoned perfectly. I think that there was garlic, onion, and red pepper, at least. So good! I have such a weakness for fritters and I'm glad that I caved here. I heated up a jerk chicken patty for breakfast (hey, why not?) this morning. It does have a spice kick that is more than what you'd typically expect from an item that is labelled mild. Highly yummy. The filling is flavourful and the dough part was perfect. Each patty is individually wrapped to preserve freshness. A box is $5.90. I love them! Aunt Elsie's was such a terrific find. If you want to order hot food in advance, this eatery is on Uber Eats. Otherwise, you can call ahead. (396)

To compare the two, I ordered a spicy beef patty and tested them for flakiness, crispness, and filling. First off price wise. It was cheaper here at $2.70 including tax. I found that this beef patty here at Allwyn's was flaky enough but lacked the crispness of the outside dough. As well the filling was too moist or soggy and it was translucent which was off putting. Also, the patty was lukewarm and not piping hot. I came here to try one and then maybe go back in and pick up a dozen. But From the one patty I had. From the pillowy coco bread to the flaky beef patty to the spicy and smoky jerk chicken. The jerk chicken had a kick to it which was nicely balanced out by the coleslaw. Despite that, I would've much rather had this with either the patty or the coco bread (not both). I was doing takeout, as I was still full from lunch! I sat down and created this Yelp listing and then checked in. I uploaded my photos from earlier in the day. It was nice to sit down and relax. He got a paper bag with handles and put my food in it. I was excited. I paid with a credit card. I tapped and was done. I thanked the man for everything and left with my food. After picking up my other order, I walked over to my car. I parked on Bingham Avenue, which is a residential street. You can park for free for an hour. Parking along Kingston Road is too complicated for me to keep track of! It was rush hour when I left this eatery just after 4 pm. You can't park on this street. I put my oxtail meal in an insulated bag. I ate the plantains in my car. They were so good! They were fried, but not to death. The natural sweetness came out. I had roughly ten slices. They were the best snack. I ended up driving to a parking lot closer to where I live to eat my oxtail meal, but in my car because I was now hungry. The oxtail was delicious. The oxtail was smaller, but it was easier to eat the meat off each segment. I got plenty of oxtail, which was great. The sauce was excellent. It came with rice and peas that were hearty and perfect. I also got coleslaw, which I enjoyed so much. It was crispy and yummy. What a fabulous find! I'd go back for more and to support this man who put a lot of love and care into his food. (450)
