Wonderful service. Our waitress was very accommodating with changing orders etc. They have a coffee bar that is great too! My one problem was that the potatoes seemed undercooked. Plenty of food for the money and the variety in side choices is awesome! Also have many gluten free options as well as vegetarian options. read more

Excellent breakfast, great service, dill eggs and pumpkin pancakes were delicious. we will definitely be back.

I've been coming here since I was a kid and there's a reason I keep going back. Solid menu with delicious, vegetarian-friendly food for both breakfast and lunch. The breakfast potatoes are hands down my favorite of anywhere I've tried. Other favorites include: Huevos Rancheros, Skip Scramble, Cornbread, (Veggie) Sloppy Joe, and the Oregon Chai/Chocolate Chai. My only "complaint" about Southside is that it only just reopened. I'm glad they've been able to stay afloat staying shut due to covid, and I can't wait to do some outdoor dining there very, very soon read more

This place is pretty cool. It's a pretty small place and it's always filled with people. I don't think I have ever come here without waiting a bit for a table. The staff are really nice and cool. I personally got the Denver omelette. It came with two sides which I chose French toast and potatoes. It was a pretty decent omelet and sides. It was not the best omelet I've ever had before but I would definitely come here if I was close by just for the vibe of this place. Is this place any better than just going to IHOP or Dennys. Sadly I wouldn't say so. The food here may be slightly better but like I said I just like the vibe of this place. The prices aren't too bad but it is Boulder. #kevinismehaboutit read more

My go-to for breakfast! ALWAYS excellent food, REALLY pleasant employees, TONS of menu choices for this veghead AND my carnivorous table mates. I'm a South Boulder native from the hippie decades-this place is a homecoming every time. Attention tourists: eat here for authentic Boulder. Skip the mall, it's gotten too "Vail-y". read more

Great little place for brunch on the weekend. My kids love it and the staff is friendly.

I love this place. I attached a photo of an empty plate because I couldn't put my turkey burger down long enough to take a picture of it. The patty itself might seem a bit small but it is actually the perfect size because turkey burgers are more dense. The flavor of the burger itself has always been so good, and this might have been my favorite one yet! Kudos to the cooks for actually melting the pepperjack on the inside of the bun which is the best way to cheese up a burger #sconniecheeseexpert One thing I appreciate about this place is that the staff actually openly cares about your experience and wants to know why you do or don't like anything you order. My mom wasn't feeling very well today and she tried to eat some small pancakes but something about them didn't taste right to her so they just took them off the bill which was really nice because I don't think she wanted everyone to know that she was feeling bad while she was there. #lumenthehuman had a mega diaper moment while we were there and I forgot to bring extra clothes today, so I asked if I could buy one of the onesies on their merch shelf and the hostess just GAVE one to me! So cute! I'm pretty sure she put a picture of Lumie on their Facebook page too :P So now we're fueled up with yummy FUEL that will get us through our fun afternoon and Lumie gets to sport her new duds all over town. #lumenthehuman #walnutcafe #consistencyiskey #winwin read more

Service was prompt and the food was great! I had the tempeh skillet with vegan cheese, which made the dish fully vegan and it was delicious. I also tried the Boulder Latte - double espresso shot with steamed [plant]milk, vanilla, and honey - and loved it. Came here for brunch with my two friends and had such a disappointing experience. It took 1hr and 15 minutes to get our food and the waitress didn't come back once to check on us. We never got the straws we asked for, didn't get any drink refills, and all the tables next to us who got here 30 minutes after us got their food well before ours came out. So disappointed. Would give it 0 stars but that is not possible. read more

I know, I know, 3 times reviewing the same place? Well, have you been there yet? If you have, you know why. If not, GO, you'll understand. I use this place as my reward for any physical activity in the Boulder area. Luckily, I have several friends that feel just as strongly about dining here as I do. To be honest, this review is to say that nothing has changed, and in this case, change is BAD. So, no change is good. I realized that in my first review, I talked about "Eggs Carlos" and how they are darn good. So darn good that I lost the ability to read. They're actually called "Eggs Marcos". My sincere apology to Marcos. Maybe you have a big brother named Carlos, and "Eggs Carlos" could be your dish, times 2? In my opinion, everyone should try it. Even vegetarians. I know, there's bacon. But if you don't eat this amazing dish, that pig will have died in vain, and you don't want that on your conscience, do you? Make that pig's death mean something. Also, the blueberry cornbread. It, like almost anything on the planet, is even better with loads of butter. They also have fresh squeezed juices, a Hazelnut latte that I could easily drink 3 of, and the shakes I'd get later would be worth it. Lastly, breakfast potatoes, I mean potatos but spelled it that way just in case Dan Quayle is reading this, he should try these. You should, too. In fact, that's an order. Try them. If you don't like them, give them to me. Service here, as always, is ABSOLUTELY FANFRIGGINTASTIC. Seriously, every time I am in the Boulder area at breakfast/brunch/lunch time, I make a point to come here. It's that good. I'd even go for linner. That's between lunch and dinner, one of the 5 most important meals of the day. Now, go. read more

A lot of places that I frequent I know exactly what I'm going to get before I walk in the front door. At Walnut I'm always torn between all the tasty options -- and they do have quite an extensive menu. Sandwiches and melts, and tons of breakfast stuff. Some highlights are: the Skip Scramble, the Boulder Melt, and the heart-stopping Eggs Marcos (eggs scrambled up with bacon, cheddar, AND cream cheese?? Oh yes.) Their options of sides are delicious. If you want a little something extra special, try their sour cream walnut coffee cake. It is warm and moist and delicious! Reasonably priced, nice and colorful atmosphere. Love the patio -- and last time I sat outside, there weren't any shady tables, so I sat my Irish sunburn-prone self down in the sun. After less than a minute they came over and gave me some sunscreen to put on. How nice is that? read more

Went here with my boyfriend and had the most lovely time! Service was AMAZING. The servers are so friendly and welcoming and the food was great! They were super accommodating for a vegan diet which is hard to find for breakfast around the area. Would definitely recommend! read more

We ate here for breakfast on Sunday. It was very busy and we waited around 15 minutes for a table but that's to be expected anywhere you eat breakfast in Boulder on a Sunday morning. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive. They have a very large breakfast menu and depending on what you order it comes with a side or two. The food was okay. I had the quiche of the day. The egg and vegetables were very good but the crust was just ok, it could have been baked a little more. My meal came with two sides so I ordered fruit that was good and a side of grits that were a little too salty for my taste. The food wasn't bad, it was just okay. I might try this place again and order something different from the menu. read more

Two things you should know about me before reading this review: 1. I hesitate to write overly gushing positive reviews unless I truly mean it. 2. I am a brunching beast and think I've tried most of the good ones in Boulder. I dream about this place. Whenever I'm in town I must go. If I had to only eat at one breakfast eatery for the rest of my days in Boulder I think this would be it. There is usually a wait but it's worth it. Service is good and very fast once you sit down, and the food is truly phenom. I've tried their various specials and they are all great, and the trusty omelet I get pretty much everywhere is the best here over any place in Boulder or Denver that I've had. You will eat here and it will seduce you to come back again and again. If you're not able to wait the 10 minutes it takes for your food to get to the table and didn't pre-game, ask for the coffee cake the second you sit down. I sort of just want to move in. read more

I love breakfast food, so it's unusual for me to find too many places that serve unique food. It's difficult to stray from the usual breakfast fare, but they managed to do and do it well! I ordered the Eggs Marcos (a heavenly scramble of eggs with bacon and cream cheese) with a side of their blueberry corn bread (an oddity that sounded too tasty to pass up.) Everything was delicious, especially the eggs. I have found scrambles to be my least favorite choice when going out for breakfast, but the Eggs Marcos immediately became my number one favorite. The only reason I am not giving South Side Walnut Cafe five stars is because of the service. Everything took forever (we waited forever for our coffee and tea and a couple of us received our meal in installments because the waitress kept forgetting to bring it all out.) Finally, our waitress brought the check but failed to tell us you pay inside, so we sat forever waiting for her to return with a box and take our cards. Since it was rather late in the morning on a Wednesday, it wasn't crowded enough for the service to be that slow. Definitely go, just make sure you have time to make it a leisurely AND delicious breakfast! read more

This 5 star review is because of a lot of things. Most important, this was the site of a lot of morning dates when I first started dating my man... The fun, awkward conversation over our sunrise sandwiches, granola with yogurt, and endless coffee... Getting to know one another while dining on perfectly cooked eggs, bacon, and country potatoes at a table outside, looking onto the flatirons... Munching down the massive biscuits and (for me) amazing gluten-free toast and fruit bowls while the friendly servers topped off our drinks, doing the longing gaze into each other's eyes. This place stores some serious memories for us, as well as incredible food. We live in Denver now, but we hit this place up, still, whenever we're in Boulder. Head here early in the morning, lest you have to wait in a huge line of hungry patrons and their kids. read more

Oh so good! Zoe was our waitress and was very helpful (she recommended the special omelette which was vegetarian with avocado and salsa and cheese) and I was happy. She didn't bother us excessively but brought refills often. The meal was delicious! I had a hankering for pancakes and I ended up eating half of the man's pancakes and baby ate the other one haha. She kept asking for soup for lunch so she ordered the cream of broccoli soup and ate half of the cup along with a pancake. The man got some omelette I don't remember (but enjoyed it) and ended up eating my blueberry cornbread (which he preferred to his pancakes anyway). We both got fruit that was GREAT. You know when you order fresh fruit and you get all cantaloupe with three grapes? No. They had apples, watermelon, cantaloupe, grapes, strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. And you couldn't tell if it had been pre-mixed or not because the fruit actually tasted like real fruit and not all cantaloupe haha. Mmmm. Definitely come here (it's nice because they have parking and are not quite as busy as the other location but the food is just as good). They have Mexican food specials that looked amazing as well. I will have to try those next time for sure. read more

The brighter and airier of the The Walnut Cafe's with the same menu and quirky wait staff. I prefer this location for it's big window's and sprawling patio. If you get seated on the souther flank of the patio, you can get some nice mountain views with your meal. There's all that health garbage for you suckers who eat "well" but it takes something really amazing to temp me away from ordering the Eggs Marcos (I'm with ya Vince!). I have to take away one star for having really awful hashbrowns. When will people learn that crunchy shredded spuds are the only way to go?! read more

I'm a conflicted breakfast eater. I love love love pancakes and all of their carb-y iterations, but know that I need eggs to keep sustained and chemically balanced. Therefore I get super excited at a place like this where your eggs come with a choice of sides that include pancakes, french toast, and blueberry cornbread. Food was tasty and well-proportioned, and we weren't lacking good items to choose from. We were sad that we didn't notice the specials board until after we ordered, but we'll have to keep our eye out for quiche specials and egg scrambles in the future. We sat at the counter which was dangerous because 1) the stools are ridiculously high, which I forgot as I launched myself off mine and into neighboring diners and 2) I spent my whole meal staring at the extensive dessert menu. read more

I like this place. It was my first time here today. I was in S. Boulder on an errand and the place I needed to go was closed for lunch hour, so I headed over to the Table Mesa Center thinking I'd eat a quick lunch at the Southern Sun. Driving toward Southern Sun, South Side Walnut caught my eye. Silly me...don't know why I hadn't noticed it there before. Oh...I've been to the 30th St. original Walnut, and to the Denver Walnut that once graced Colfax on Capitol Hill, but never to this one. I really like it. Menu is similar to others, but with different specials. Prices are soooo reasonable. A Walnut tradition. Lots of fresh baked goodies. Whereas I like the idea of peanut butter chocolate chip waffles, since it was already after l pm I decided to go with lunch food. Turkey burger with swiss cheese accompanied by a lovely spinach salad (which I subbed for the chips or fruit for a 75 cent upgrade) was just around 6 bucks. I tried a dessert, a very nice mixed berry cobbler with blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries and a nice oaty granola-y topping. I got a latte to go too. Sometimes I only eat once a day around lunchtime so I tend to try to get all the nourishment and caffeine stimulation I need---at lunchtime. Not what the doctor ordered, but it seems to work for me. I like the environment and the staff at this place too. My old memories of what was approximately here was a Baskin Robbins. That must have been a long long time ago. How it has evolved since then!!! read more

South Side has become the breakfast spot. My sister lives right near here, and you can pretty much find us here for breakfast on the weekends if not skiing. They have a great coffee drink called the black and tan. I also like the Skip Scramble (I think that is what it is called) that has really good vegan sausage. Or if I am feeling bacon, the eggs marcos are eggs, bacon and cream cheese. You get one or two sides with each entree, and you can pick a pancake, blueberry corn bread, giant biscuit, potatoes or french toast. It satisfies all your breakfast cravings without having to order two meal (or more likely trying bites of my sister's or fiance's food!) The servers are always bright and friendly, and even when the place is packed the food comes out fast. read more

I somersaulted into this place yesterday for brunch and was a little disappointed. The food was okay, we were seated fairly quickly (15 minutes) and my chair didn't collapse under the weight of my ego. It just wasn't exceptional. Here are some deets: The best thing about my visit was the service. All the servers were quick, unobtrusive and very helpful. I didn't catch a single one of them *not* smiling, which was nice. They seem to enjoy working there, which encourages me to enjoy eating there. My omelette was pretty small. Maybe I've been spoiled by other omelettes at other restaurants, but the one at South Side was surprisingly meager. It was tasty, sure, but I was a little annoyed and left feeling far from full. Also, their French Toast is not very good. They don't use large bread for it, which makes the presentation strange, and the taste is just average. The lady I was dining with was hugely crestfallen about this, practically weeping. While I didn't share her extreme emotions on the topic, I could see the reason for her malaise. In short, South Side is average on taste, small on portions and big on happy staff. I would take Gandalf here and share my potatoes with him. read more

A gem. I've been in 20 times and always leave with a smile. The southside special omelet is outstanding. A bit spicy, a bit savory. They have gluten free bread and a dedicated toaster for it. Ask for a recommendation and peak around at all the happy people. My favorite relaxed Boulder breakfast spot. read more

I like the vibe of this place very much - it's spacious inside, with high, beamed ceilings and art for sale on the walls. Right now there are lots of interesting guitars and they were a nice diversion during our weekday brunch avec les enfants. I had a breakfast sandwich here and I really liked how it was presented - very different. I ordered the eggs scrambled with bacon and cheddar cheese and the pieces of chopped bacon and melted cheese were basically encased in the eggs. It was really yummy and everything stayed together inside the sandwich instead of potentially falling out. I liked the rosemary bread as well - nice little touch. The rest of my party had pancakes and they were good - I love that you can order real maple syrup for a little extra. Definitely worth it, my friends. Take the advice of a true Canadian on this. Our server was really efficient but not warm at all - not a big deal, but I have to say I do like it when you feel like the person likes you and is glad that you've stopped by. The place has such a down home, welcoming feeling otherwise. We'll definitely be back - there's lots of great outdoor seating here as well. read more

I hate to write poor reviews of places which people seem to hold in high esteem. Or perhaps it's the other Walnut Cafe which other people really like? In any case, I've eaten at this one multiple times while I lived in the SoBo. Sometimes for bunch, sometimes for a late lunch, etc. My experience has been with the breakfast dishes, which is what you go for there I believe. I found the eggs to be overly reliant on the cheese, which seems to be 50% of the content if you order a scramble. I seem to remember other parts of my meals being very oily (or butter-like substance) - tasty, but not a sign of quality cooking to me. The staff always seem friendly with efficient teamwork - no complaints. I always end my reviews with my outlook for future visits...I wouldn't veto a visit, but I'm not ever suggesting it to friends or visitors as a destination. read more

My husband and I try to eat here every Friday for breakfast when we have time before work. The food is delicious, waitstaff friendly and quick, and atmosphere very Bouldery and laid back. My favorite entree is Eggs Marcos which is essentially scrambled eggs, bacon, and CREAM CHEESE. Whoever thought of that one deserves a hug. I really don't have any issues with this place including their coffee which I usually down about three cups of per visit. It's definitely not best ever, but the amazing food and atmosphere make up for anything that is average about this place. read more

I came here a little over a month ago with a big party. they were very accommodating for us and the food was great! 2 of us are vegan and there are so many vegan options on the menu, unlike where we are from in Georgia. Why do I keep eating here? What is this compulsion to keep going back? Insanity, I tell you! The flagship spot on Walnut and 30th was my first introduction to the Walnut Cafes of Colorado. I ordered the veggie biscuits and gravy which filled a long-held desire. Yet, the service was not good and the plate looked so sad with its pale gravy and yellow biscuits. My bad. My sentiments on the service come from our waitress' constant neglect. We had to beg for drink refills and we were otherwise left to our own devices. So, we tried the South Side Walnut Cafe, in hopes that the distance would make our bud. The staff is infinitely better at this location, but the food is still so painfully boring. Each time I meet my partner for lunch (which has totaled maybe 6 times now), I try something different - which is made possible by their many veggie options. However, each has been more disappointing than the last. The most recent, a breakfast burrito, was almost inedible. It was drowned in their salsa which is not particularly good. The filling was bland - the breakfast potatoes were under seasoned and the eggs were overcooked. The grilled cheeses have been the most promising. There is an interesting variety, but even then, I still feel like I pay $2 too much for a boring grilled cheese. I can see why others may go crazy for the Walnut Cafes - it's a local business that fills a void - but it has just never quite worked out for me. read more

LOVE this place. Best breakfast food in Boulder, and maybe all of Colorado. Fresh, filling, and always served promptly. So I'm usually a little skeptical of cafes that claim to be "vegan" or "organic" or "gluten-free" or any of the above in combination with one another. It's not because I don't believe in food fitting these requirements, it's just that I don't usually associate these categories with foods that are going to be inherently bad for me. And sometimes, I just want to have a deliciously bad-for-me breakfast. However, my possible issues with any and all of the descriptions for the Walnut Cafe quickly dissolved when I saw all of the delicious options I had to choose from on the menu. They honestly have a slew of breakfast and lunch options that you'd be hard-pressed to pass on and an even more interesting selection of drinks to boot. I ended up with an omelette and potatoes which by all standards should be pretty normal, but the freshness in the ingredients and, hell, maybe the smile on the waiter's face (I don't really know) made the meal something worth remembering. They have a nice outdoor area in which to take in the cool mountain breeze (this is all delightfully foreign to me since I'm actually from the Midwest,) and if you sit in the alley against the building you actually have a nice view of Mount Whatever-Its-Called outside of Boulder. I even topped off the sunny day with an Italian soda because why not. Very solid diner to get a nice breakfast and/or lunch and lots of interesting selections to choose from. Family friendly, health-conscious friendly, and mid-westerner friendly. read more

Sometimes a restaurants selling points are also its negatives. South Side Walnut is a great example of that. It offers a good, no-nonsense breakfast and lunch. Nothing gourmet or foodie about this place, but solid all-American standards. Good service, good food, and good prices. The flip side of this is....it NEVER CHANGES. Yes, they have soup, quiche, and breakfast scramble specials that change daily, but this is really more of a rotation than a "special". Give me something with local in-season veggies occasionally! Try offering some whole grain pancakes instead of only white! Show some creativity with your sides once in a while! So, I've given South Side Walnut 4 stars (I would have preferred 3.5)-- they do not try to pretend to be something other than they are, and there really isn't anything to complain about food-wise. And I keep going back... read more

I've been here several times. It's always been fairly decent, inexpensive (mostly) breakfast stuff. The last time I was here - a few weeks ago I was disappointed with the food. Specifically, the potatoes were not quite done and under seasoned. Plus the pancakes were kind of rubbery. These things will send me to other places in the area for future breakfast outings. It is a bummer because Walnut South Side is walking distance form our house. They do have an extensive drink menu (coffee, teas, juices, shakes) and tons of stuff for the kiddos but if you want really awesome food, there are other good breakfast joints in Boulder. read more

Generally, the food was pretty good. There are so many options to choose from, and so many opportunities to please your breakfast palate. With tons of choices on how to have your coffee/caffeine, you'll have a blast reading through all of the ways you could jack your day up. They even offer pancakes and french toast as sides, which was pretty much mind-blowing to me. Being able to order an omelette with two pancakes on the side and breakfast potatoes for around $10 easily made me a fan. However, the service has to be noted. I'm not typically one to doc a restaurant for a specific server who might be having a bad day, but our server on this day was staunchly apathetic and fairly rude. In fact, I was the only one at our table of 7 that doesn't work in the service industry, and everyone agreed that she was really pushing it. Upon ordering coffee, she asked if we liked cream (some of us do). When she came back with the coffee, she gave us three mugs half full of coffee, and didn't bring any cream. When she next came back around, I asked for cream and she snobbishly mentioned that she was getting it. When one of us ordered the quiche then promptly went to the restaurant, she came back after a brief pause and told us that we should tell him that they have a different quiche, and let her know if he still wants it. Shouldn't you tell him? A few other moments of rudeness and we all agreed that we weren't happy with her. This may seem borderline rant, but when I wake up first thing in the morning and decide to visit a breakfast location with my friends instead of just cooking at home, one of the major things I look for is a nice cup of coffee and a smiling waitperson. Yet, despite this specific day (service is a draining act and can turn anyone's day into a bad one - so I forgive her), I will most likely return when I find myself in South Boulder again. It's spacious, there's plenty of aesthetically-pleasing facets to this place, and it's absolutely affordable. read more
