Boulder is full of great coffee shops, and Brewing Market Coffee is no exception. It's a cozy little spot just off the Pearl Street Mall. There isn't much seating inside, but we were lucky to arrive just as a table was opening up. We were served quickly, and the service was mostly friendly. We ordered small sizes, including an almond milk flat white, almond milk mocha, and a hot chocolate, but the drimks we received were all 12 ounces. Generous, but a bit larger than we'd intended. (I like my flat whites to be 6 or 8 oz.) The coffee shop also offer some gluten-friendly treats, such as Outrageous bread and granola bars. (Thank you!) Most baristas are clearly not trained, management needs to step in. The no foam latte I asked for was basically a cappuccino with how much foam they put in. They don't know what flat whites or macchiatos are which is basic coffee knowledge. Very disappointing experience. $8 for a latte and they can't even make it good. The young lady with greasy hair and a lip ring so large that it disturbed me to look at, didn't greet me and didn't say thanks after I ordered. Several minutes later my coffee was ready. This is the coziest and brightest of the bunch, with a small and quaint outdoor patio, located off the Pearl Street Mall. I love this location and often get my little iced horchata latte fix here, when I'm in this part of Boulder. Warm and friendly baristas that always get my drink right. Despite it being the smallest of the Brewing Markets, they have the best coffee in the area. This location consistently carries my favorite brewing market organic, fair trade coffee bean, prepackaged in the 1 lb bag, (the Arapahoe and Baseline locations do NOT). Brewing Market coffee is what I buy to brew at home. I'm such a fan, that I often buy a pound of their prepackaged coffee beans as a gracious gift to my coffee loving friends in other states. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped by for an afternoon caffeine pick me up as we were exploring Boulder. It was conveniently located near where we parked (small parking lot across the street) and Pearl Street Mall. First Impression: The cafe is on the small side, but very bright, clean, and inviting. Coffee: I had the iced horchata latte and my boyfriend had a mocha latte -- both of which were delicious! I loved the horchata latte, wish I could have it again! Baseline location - I occasionally stop-by for coffee to go as it is in a convenient location and you don't have to battle for parking. Coffee is very solid and certainly in the mix with any of the other "cooler" shops in town. However, I won't be going back to this location. Strictly because the Barista guy (early on a Weds morning) puts the coffee to-go on the counter holding each cup directly by the rim. You know, where you're going to drink from unless you keep a lid on it. I get that it's hot, but sorta basic service technique, yeah? I was happy to see on Yelp that along with a couple of other places in Boulder, Brewing Market on Baseline was open at 5:30am this Saturday morning (P.S. It's NOT!). So I drove over there to relax and do some online work. Arriving at about 6:20 am, I noticed all the front lights were off. I saw two people inside, working at the counter, so tried the door and it opened. The two staff looked surprised that I was there, did not greet me, or explain why the lights were off, and ignored me as I sat at a table in the dark. I sat for about 8 minutes, during which time the lights were turned on and one of the staff walked back and forth past my table setting up chairs outside. No-one talked to me or asked what I might want or need. At about 6:30am I asked the staff member who was setting up chairs what time they opened, and she said, "6am". I explained that on the Yelp App it said 5:30am. The staff member came over and took a look at the listing (I showed it to her on my phone), she told me "The times are posted on the door" - as if what I was saying was unimportant (which since I live 15 miles away I can't drive to the door just to check their store hours, but I didn't argue). I sat for a few more minutes, then I decided to leave. I walked right past the staff member setting out chairs and she still ignored me as I was leaving. Not once was I greeted or asked what I might want or need. When a business has Yelp hours posted and I drive miles based on that, and they ignore the fact that they haven't posted correct hours on Yelp, it's a problem. Also, when staff treat customers as if they are an imposition, do not greet customers, or even ask simply, "May I help you?" it's a problem. (I was the only customer in there). Updated 01/04/2018 -- I just raised my review to 3 stars only because we have been back to the Lafayette location a few more times since my first review, and it's been ok. Still never get a happy vibe from the baristas -- always feels like ordering fast food here for some reason, impersonal -- but this location is a pleasant place to sit and talk; it is spacious and well appointed. Regardless, we always leave here feeling "meh" about the service. It is strangely ubiquitous at the various Brewing Market locations, I don't know why. Baristas here seem unhappy and like they can't wait to clock out. I just don't get that vibe from the baristas at the other coffee shops we frequent in Boulder. I still think it is a top-down issue passed on by the owners' attitudes. Too bad. Old Review: In short: when in Boulder visit Que's, Ozo, Laughing Goat, Boxcar, Amante -- all are excellent. Recommend you skip Brewing Market -- we've been to multiple locations with repeated negative experiences at every location. The owner doesn't seem to give a hoot & his attitude problem trickles down to the entire staff... You don't need to spend your money here. If you do go, the McGuckin's and the Hover Rd locations are usually ok, but not great. Service at Lafayette & Baseline is consistently "meh" to "ugh". Long Version: We haven't been to a Brewing Market since the last time we visited the Lafayette location during normal business hours and it was closed. An employee told us the owner was aware that the hours were posted online incorrectly but didn't care enough to fix it. Considering we'd driven out from Niwot specifically to get those drinks (we liked their coffee) for nothing, we were a little peeved to hear that... Today, we tried the Baseline location only because Que's, our standby, is in the process of switching locations from Table Mesa to Baseline and is closed for 2 months. Big mistake bothering with Brewing Market again! There is a barista at the Baseline location who desperately needs to get himself a "real" job -- he's obviously been a barista far too long based on the way he treats customers with disdain and annoyance instead of pleasant courtesy. Since it's 92° and we work outdoors, my fiance ordered an iced Americano. He asked if he could have it blended (Brewing Market blends a variety of drinks, so this should not have been a big deal) -- the [disgruntled] Barista hesitated big time, saying, "I don't know WHAT that will taste like, man..." -- um, considering an Americano is just espresso and water, it would probably taste like.... an Americano? Seriously?! For some unknown reason, he thought a blended Latte made more sense, so we switched to a blended Latte just to make him happy. No such luck, he had to roll his eyes a few more times and snicker about how dumb a blended Latte was with his co-worker before we could even pay for the damn thing. It's not rocket science, fellas, you just dump it in the blender and push the button. Viola' -- you've got a blended Latte. Judging from the guy's age, he probably flunked out of CU 10 years ago, so a blended drink may seem like a Really. Big. Deal. Whatever. We walked out while they were snickering together at the blender and drove straight to Ozo on Arapahoe, where they made us a blended Mocha in 45 seconds flat with big smiles (and a $4 tip, which would have gone to Mr. I've Been A Barista Way Too Long if he could have just kept his mouth shut & made the drink). In short: when in Boulder visit Que's, Ozo, Laughing Goat, Boxcar, Amante -- all are excellent. Might as well skip Brewing Market -- from the owner of the company and his crappy attitude down to the baristas with THEIR crappy attitudes (top down, folks... can't have a healthy business when the owner doesn't even give a hoot) what is the point of putting your $$ into this company when there are so many excellent alternatives in town? read more

I love Brewing Market! It makes me sad to see that have a bad rating. I've been a loyal Brewing Market fan for years and they always have consistent service and they definitely have on of the best Chais in Boulder. The only downside is that they can get a bit busy during Midterms and Finals, so try to avoid the shop during those times. read more

I come here every other week or so to study. It's quiet and I alway get a lot done. But that's about the only ok part about it. I only ever get their ginger Chai drink. The backstory? I love chai, and only the spicy kind. I asked the guy what their spiciest chai is, he said ginger. It's just an average, if not below average, spicy chai, but it's I guess, the best they have... nothing special. But it's been two times now that it just tastes like milk with a crap aftertaste. I did muster up the courage to turn in back to them twice, just to get more of the bland gross milk tasting stuff. That to me, is unacceptable. read more

Amending a previous review - the customer service at the Baseline location can be truly atrocious sometimes. Most of the staff here is wonderful, but towards the end of the evening, certain staffers get rowdy/stir crazy. This location is right across the street from the college and offers many seats/tables so that the environment is conducive to studying. Often the entire space is filled with people not causally enjoying a cup of Joe like at the other locations, but sitting with thick textbooks and laptops, furiously studying. Because this location is quite obviously a study spot for many if not most of its patrons, you'd think that the staff would be respectful of that. Instead, I have had more than one instance of the baristas being as loud if not louder than the customers, using outdoor voices (shouting), cursing, and generally being obnoxious in a way that I would expect to find at a frat party or in a break room, not on the sales floor of a business. When asked to lower their voices for the courtesy of the customers, oftentimes the baristas simply scoff that "this is a coffeeshop, not a fucking library!" and generally behave as if this is their living room, not their place of employ. I expect baristas to be snarky and sometimes spiteful, but to be out and out rude and disrespectful to clientele, never. Does anyone have a way to contact the owner/manager of this location? I'd like to pass this employee evaluation on to them. read more

I come here frequently enough because my favorite Indian restaurant is next door and I always come here after for a coffee, but today will be the last time. I've never really had a bad coffee. Even the bad ones are worth drinking because caffeine. Today my pumpkin coffee tastes seriously off. I've had it from this place a dozen times, I know they don't use syrup, they use real pumpkin and it's usually good. Today was...Burnt? Bitter? Gross. I went to the counter and said hey I'm sorry but do you mind if I try something else, this doesn't taste right. And I was met with such disgust and treated so rudely by all 3 of the people at the counter it was truly uncomfortable. There were eye rolls, sh*t talking, and glares. I've worked in restaurants for half of my life until recently. I would never treat a customer who politely complained like that ever. The people who were working today were so rude I felt ashamed for complaining. I should have just thrown my coffee in the trash and gone elsewhere. I wouldn't be surprised if they spit in my coffee or gave me decaf (which would be worse than spit in my opinion). I will never be back there ever again. read more

I have to agree with the previous post about downright rude service. I go by there in the morning, and pass the starbucks to try and support a more local business. The woman behind the counter in the mornings (who seems to always be there) is ALWAYS rude. The previousl posts had mentioned the evenings, but this is the morning crew who is outright rude. I got essentially berated for asking about the coffee sizes (their spots above where they were for a while had moved!) Today was the last straw, and I decided to write this review and never go back. I went by at 5:31a.m. (they open at 5:30 a.m.). Rude girl was just getting there and another girl was brining in pastries. I went in asked if they had coffee. She literally barked "NO!" at me, and walked away. She was late, I was not early. Well, I am done with the place, and I will go to the starbucks right next to them, because they are consistently nicer. I tried to go local, but rude service has totally driven me away. Ugh. I only go here because my friend goes here and she only goes here because its next to her house. Baristas here are not friendly. I've never even been greeted when I've walked in the door! One time I ordered tea and asked for a pot and the girl said "we don't do pots" in a tone that would have been appropriate if I had asked for a plate of handmade tortillas, even though pricing for pots of tea were clearly posted on the menu. At the end of the day, this place is clean, has coffee, lots of seats, and provides free wifi. Its a decent place to hang out. It was like eating crappy top ramen (honestly, tastes so bad) over and over again (too lazy to cook other food, within your comfort zone...) and then growing a strange attachment to it from the sheer amount of time you've spent with (eating) it. I spent 91% of my college nights holed up in Brewing Market. There were many a minute spent shooting fellow customers a spiteful and simultaneously, a desperate look. It is prime study location and when you step inside, you'll generally see people huddled over their fancy i-computers. If not, then they'll be poring over a textbook. When you can find a seat, it's a great place to work. Classical music hums quietly in the background. Angry stares are shot at chatty (but friendly) Boulderites who've come in for their fair trade coffee with soy milk. Alice's Friendly Guide to Finding a Seat: Open to 10 am: seats aplenty (difficulty rating: easy) 10 - 8 pm: on-and-off seating (difficulty rating: medium) 9 pm - close (whether it be midnight, 2 am, 4 am, or 24 hrs - yes, I've experienced it all): (difficulty rating: moderately difficult) Mid-October and early December (midterms and finals season): morning to afternoon: moderately difficult early evening to close: impossible That said, the drinks are good but nothing extraordinary. Lattes are foamed well and Americanos are delicious but I've had better Chai - both for the green (sweeter) and the black (spicier). But the baristas. Some are snarky. Some are indifferent. Some are moderately civil. But almost none are friendly. I used to work at Starbucks and I know friends who've remarked to me about the creepy friendliness of most Starbucks baristas. None of my friends who've frequented Brewing Market in Boulder have ever commented on the niceness of these baristas. Like, I get it. You have to get up at 3:30 to come to work and make coffee for a bunch of people who don't want to be there either. And yes, it's 11:45 pm and you're damned tired and these college students - they're everywhere! Augh! Been there, done that. But a smile and a friendly hello wouldn't kill anyone. read more

The only con that I can come up with is that it is crowded (mostly with people studying). The good stuff weighs heavily, though. They are open late. They have tons of outlets for laptops. The prices are good. There is tons of parking if you need it, and it is big (which means that even though it is crowded, there are always some seats). It is a damned good place. The trouble with Brewing Market is that it *wants* to be a cool student/hipster hangout, but it just doesn't cut it. I run here sometimes for a quick study break because (a) it's slightly cheaper than Starbucks and (b) I usually can't find a spot in the Starbucks lot. I don't understand why it costs me more for an iced coffee than a regular - unless the price of ice has, um, become an actual amount recently. The coffee is decent quality, but it's not really anything special. Their specialty drinks are good if I'm in the mood for one, but are definitely on the pricey side. They do have a nice selection of pastries, burritos, and chocolates. Something else that bothers me are the people in there. I can't say that I've had aggressive counter service, but they definitely seem uninterested in you or your order. And, yes - holy shit, yes - I know that a business close to a university will have students as customers (and I am one of them) but even the 'adults' there are rude. I didn't think it was a big deal to ask some middle-aged woman to move her HUGE purse and winter coat from on top of a table she wasn't even sitting at (at 2 pm, mind you), but apparently it was. I've tried to ask people to help me plug in my laptop cord and they all seem inconvenienced by my request. On the plus side, it's open late, there's free wifi, and they don't serve tacos. We were in desperate need of a coffee fix so we stopped in. The coffee shop is cute, clean, well appointed. I saw the bins of bulk beans behind the counter and am sure that if I lived here, I might try the beans some time. I ordered two iced lattes and then told the guy behind the counter I was going to use the restroom. I was kind of surprised when I came back out that they still weren't ready. It was 5 p.m. and I was the only order at that time. So not the best on speed but whatever. The latte itself was really strong -- like almost the consistency and mouth feel of a mocha. That was OK since I was in need of a serious caffeine jolt, but others would probably find it too strong. Decent, not great, and kind of slow. But I got my coffee fix and there's plenty to be said for that. read more

Brewing Market has been around FOREVER (or at least for longer than I've been around Boulder...), and while I don't care for their particular coffee roasts, they do make a mean house Chai in several varieties (black tea, decaf, ginger, and some other wild and crazy varieties) and, especially at their Baseline location, offer an inviting environment to sit for a while, cozy up to the fire with friends, or settle in for a few hours' work. My friend and I came here to study two days in a row because it's that great. It wasn't crowded or loud which was great for us because we were trying to write a paper. The coffee was great, and I found the staff to be quite friendly. It's also located in a pretty convenient area if you ask me. Whole Foods is right there in case you get the urge to do some grocery shopping. It has a great view of the mountains and it's open late for all those late nights I'll probably have this fall. It doesn't seem like too many CU student come here (at least not in the summer) so we weren't distracted by anyone else and got a decent amount of work done! read more

I'm an Iced Coffee person. Like every day, regardless of the weather. During my trip to the area, I found it hard to find good iced coffee. This place has wonderful Iced coffee. But, as was my experience in the area, the sizes of the coffee are too small. I had to order 2 large iced coffees to come close to what I normally get in the morning. That let me try it two different ways, both of which were good. So, the quality is great. But, I'd love to see an improvement on volume. A bigger Iced Coffee is needed. read more

From Feb. 2013 Coffee is ok. I'm used to great coffee, being from Hawaii. We ordered a medium size dark roast with 2 shots of espresso and a small size dark roast. They ran out of dark roast in the middle of filling our cups so, without asking us, gave us a half-filled medium cup and finished half the small cup with a light roast. For $4.44 total, it's not bad but pretty annoying. read more
