I came here based on a recommendation from a coworker. Since I am 5'1" petite, most of my clothes need moderate alterations. I was looking to take in and shorten a theory dress and blazer. Since theory clothing isn't the cheapest, I wanted a good tailor. I had gone to other tailors (all around Los Angeles) and have been told there was no need to get these items done (despite me looking like I was drowning in my outfit). The Alterations: I tried on the dress and told her I just wanted it to fit better. Her recommendations were beyond what I even knew a tailor could do! It was great! I loved the way the dress and jacket look! Price: No, this won't be the cheapest place but I think the quality of work and service are worth the price. Service: The tailor is very nice and professional. I will say that I have been back since the dress and jacket (I was so happy with the results). You will receive honest feedback. She will tell you how much it will cost upfront and sometimes tell you it is not worth it. However, if you feel strongly about something, she will be happy to do it for you. I appreciate an honest opinion. Parking: ample lot parking. There are a few spots with a free hour. Overall: I have found my tailor and don't mind driving from studio city. I came here for the first time because it is closer to my house and I brought in a blazer to have it taken in and she wouldn't even attempt it saying that it would cost too much for me $100. I was denied and turned away. So I drove back to my old trusty tailor in Arcadia where I used to live and she is doing it for $35 and will have it ready in four days. I first came here with little expectation, in need of a tailor on the fly, and have since found my go-to. She has always exceeded my expectations and correctly refined my clothing, even when I thought I knew better. I used to take my pants to Men's Wearhouse (Westfield Santa Anita Mall, Arcadia) but they no longer tailor pants if they are purchased elsewhere. Bummer, because I was happy with their work and it was right across the street from my house. After searching for a number of new tailors, I selected South Lake Tailor with reservation based on some of the reviews I read and decided to test her with two pairs of men's dress slacks. Both pairs of pants required major work such as the waist taken in/out, and the legs redone because the pant legs were quite baggy. I was hesitant but really wanted to wear these pants. A week later I picked up my pants and they turned out great. I tried both on with dress shoes I brought along with me and they fit and looked terrific. In fact, I am wearing one of these dress slacks now. The owner is friendly and pleasant while her shop is small (there isn't a whole lot of room to move around). There is plenty of parking in the back. All in all, I'll be coming back to South Lake Tailor in the future. read more

I have always gotten all my shirts, ties, and suits tailored at Lam's Tailoring in Rowland Heights (http://www.yelp.com/biz/lams-tailoring-rowland-heights) with nothing but great results - the only issue being it is about 10 miles out of my way. Recently, as our business has picked up, I have been working 55-60hours/week and as such, simply cannot conveniently head over to Lam's. When I told him this at my last trip, he suggested me to his other location, South Lake Tailoring, in the Pasadena area. This was great news to me cause I go to the jewelry district once a week and this is on my way back so I can drop off my suits/ties/shirts for tailoring and pick it up the next week without going out of my way or making extra time. I will admit I was a little hesitant at first because Lam wasn't doing the tailoring but he said his wife ran that place and he assured me the quality will be up to par, and if I have any issue, he would absolutely resolve it for me. Well, I tried South Lake Tailor out about a month ago, and after a few different adjustments, I can say I am completely happy with the service They are priced reasonably (not going to be cheap, but not expensive) but the quality of work is solid. She knows how to tailor a dress to flatter your body type (I could finally see my curves in a dress for once!) and she's honest and gives me a heads up on what kinds of dresses to buy that will be quicker and less expensive to tailor. I needed a lined dress and skirt tailored for my business trip (Wednesday). I came in on a Saturday before closing and she got it back to be on Tuesday morning, without a problem! She made a basic black dress look like something Claire Underwood would rock. Came back for a dress I needed tailored for a friend's wedding. She collaborated with me and transformed the dress with wide unflattering sleeves to something sleek and suited to my body. I love a conscientious business owner: there was an issue with their credit card machine eating up the receipt paper, and in the kafuffle, South Lake Tailor happened to double-swipe my debit card. She immediately said, "If this rings up twice in your account, just call me back and let me know." When I received my bank statement, I checked for that (I'm anal with my book-keeping), and the purchase had gone through twice. This tailor was referred by a close friend. I had 2 pair of slacks taken in at the waist. These were brand new. The lady had me try them on, put some needles on the areas where she was going to take them in, and told me to come back after a week. The pants came out perfect! I'm petite (5'3, size 00 - 2 depending on the brand) so I always tailor my clothes. The total came out to $60, a little pricey but the work was excellent. A family member of mines is a seamstress and approved this tailor's work. She says alot of work is involved to do it correctly. So in the end the quality of the work justifies the price! Here's what my wife had to say about South Lake Tailor's excellent service for her wedding dress: "She's the best! If you're not sure who to use to tailor your wedding dress, and you live in the Pasadena area (or in the greater Los Angeles area in general), the search is over because you should come to South Lake Tailor. I had a lot of edits to be done with my dress, and on top of that I'm a petite lady, but she knew exactly what I wanted and even suggested a couple alterations. I needed the whole upper area to fit me better (the dress is by Nicole Miller, it's the "Kimberly Bridal Gown" -- www.nicolemiller.com/kimberly-bridal-gown), the lace waist area had to be taken in a little more, the ruffle on the back neck had to be removed, I wanted cups added so I didn't have to wear a bra, the train had to be shortened, a hook added for when I would dance, and the most difficult edit was moving that "V" seamline up, so it hit closer to my knees resulting in a more overall proportioned look. She did that all in 2 weeks! For the final fitting I noticed that there were a couple holes in the lace on the back, and she fixed them no added cost. So in total it took less than 3 weeks, but I gave myself 2 months prior to the wedding to have my dress tailored (I knew a lot had to be done). Everyone at the wedding said my dress fit me perfectly, and that the dress was simple and sleek but still very elegant. And I got a lot of compliments on my rear (butt). So, she did a fabulous job, I'm still amazed on how easy she made it seem. About 2 weeks after the wedding I came back to her because I'm going to be a bridesmaid at my bridesmaid's wedding, but my bridesmaids dress just need to be taken in and the cups removed. Il keep it simple, her prices are not the cheapest but you get what you pay for. She listens to what you ask for and if you don't like it she has no problem correcting it. I brought in several jeans to have them tapered and also a suit to be completely tapered . On my most recent visit I picked up my suit pants and took them home at home I wasn't 100% happy with the look. I called her and explained , she said bring them in . Within 24 hours I had my suit pants back and fit even better then what I had in mind. And for that type of customer service making sure I'm happy with the work , I will be back . Fast service, very professional, and sooo happy with my alterations! But let's rewind a bit. It's Wednesday on a very warm November afternoon. I met my dressmaker's husband inside a parking lot in Old Town Pasadena conveniently during lunch break. The husband asks, "Congratulations on getting married! When is the big day? Two or three weeks?" "Three days," I replied. I received the dress in my hands and hung it up in the back seat. That's when it dawned on me....I'm walking down the aisle in three days... .... and I totally forgot I needed to alter my dress. Crap. CrapCrapCrap. I turned out of the parking lot and headed home so I could get ready for work. In the meantime, I poked around Yelp for great tailors around my area... but who were decently priced... and who could do an amazing job... in very little time. Thursday rolled around, and I called The South Lake Tailor because they were the first business to pop up on my Yelp search. I gave South Lake a call: "Hello, I have a question: how fast can you alter a wedding dress?" "Two to three weeks," the woman replied. "Oh. Um... What about just altering the hem... like shortening a dress?" "Two or three days." I paused. "How about twenty-four hours?" "Bring the dress to the store so I can take a look at it." "I will see you in fifteen minutes!" I exited Old Town and found my way to the sleepy little shopping area on South Lake Avenue. I made my way to the shopping area that was an alley lined with antique shop windows. Nestled in between storefronts was the South Lake Tailor, which was a tiny little shop the size of an oversize closet. A thin, vietnamese woman with long hair and red lips asked if I could be helped. I told her that I called in recently regarding the hem on my dress. I explained to her that I get married on Saturday and I was in dire need of a great tailor who could work quickly. I tried on the dress for the tailor, and realized that the dressmaker had already pinned the length with a safety pin, so all the tailor had to do was tell me it was possible. The tailor said that she could do this by tomorrow. The tailor marked my dress with chalk all the way around my dress and had me take it off. I also asked if she could steam the wrinkles out while she was at it. "For you," she replied, "I will. I will do it for you because you are getting married!" I thanked her and ran out the store. I returned the next morning and saw my dress hanging inside the cleaners. It was perfect! The length was perfect and there wasn't a wrinkle in sight! And as promised, the charge was $25 (cash only.) I happily handed her $30 and told her I couldn't wait to come back for my altering needs. The South Lake Tailor definitely saved my wedding dress! Rarely do I find a 2-star review warranted, but this tailor did everything completely wrong--even after I asked her to not do these things she did wrong...and to my wedding dress...six days before the wedding! For an incredibly inflated price of $90, the tailor was to do two things: shorten the straps and shorten the length. My dress was not insanely complicated: fitted bodice, with floor-length scalloped lace and chiffon--not even a bustle, or a train--which means pretty much a glorified prom dress. When I entered the shop, she hardly even looked up from her work and said: "put on your dress"--if you want bridal alteration fanfare, definitely go elsewhere. During my pinning at the shop, she said she would shorten the straps more than how they were pinned and I explained that she should not do so because of my ridiculously huge rib-cage. While trying on the altered dress at home, I could feel it fit very differently--meaning hardly at all, which was frustrating being that I had to order a dress size up, just to accommodate my bountiful rib bones. When I sat down to put on my accompanying shoes, the hook at the top of the zipper ripped out of the lining and I knew I had to get it fixed elsewhere, as we were leaving the next day for our wedding destination in San Luis Obispo and we only had six days to do an insane amount of work on a ranch, for our DIY wedding. On Monday, I was lucky to find Kitty, at the Fitting Image, in San Luis Obispo, who was sweet as pie, fawned over my bride-li-ness (this was not a pre-requisite for me, but it sure felt nice) and actually listened to me when we were talking about alterations and how I wanted to repair the damage that South Lake Tailors had done. Kitty informed me that the dress straps had been shortened 1" beyond what I had agreed upon but she not only fixed the straps, the lining and the dress hook, but she did it in three days, with a pressing, for $35. Something I unfortunately missed in all of the chaos that ensues before a wedding, is that South Lake Tailors had not shortened the dress to above floor length, as per requested. The length was then confounded by the overly shortened straps, which led to the dress being beyond floor length. The wedding was amazing, except that I was tripping on my dress throughout the night and/or holding it up so that I wouldn't trip. Eventually my cowboy boots ripped a hole in the front panel (again, it was a ranch wedding) and I partially have South Lake Tailors to thank for this (the Jameson didn't help either). All this cost me $90, plus the $35 I had to pay to get the alterations repaired. Now I will also need to get the front panel repaired, which was ripped because the dress was too long. We'll ignore the cleaning fee too, which will definitely be hefty due to the fact that the thing was dragging on the dirt all night. I hope South Lake Tailors will read this review and learn something from it--but I'm not holding my breath, as listening is not one of their strengths. read more

Not thrilled with this tailor at all. I took in all of my work pants to be hemmed (I'm 5 ft tall) and found that after a few months, many of the hems that she did are already unraveling. Then I brought in a dress I wanted hemmed for my bachelorette party. The dress is hilariously tacky and was on the clearance rack. It's a size 10 and I"m like a size 6. I could see on her face instantly that she didn't want to do it. She told me to take the dress back and get a refund and go buy a dress that fit because it would be too much work to do it and it would be expensive. She quoted me $100 to fix it (the dress cost $100). I left that day and went to Express Tailor on Washington and Lake. They charged me $30 and did the sewing in a day and a half. South Lake Tailor seems expensive for what it is. She's ok and I see by the ratings that some people love her but I'm personally not impressed. read more

I called on Friday night and asked if she could hem 4 pairs of pants. She asked when I needed them by. When I told her Monday, she said she would have them ready on Saturday (less than 24 hours later) since they are not open Sunday and Monday. My pants were ready, hemmed and pressed when I came to pick them up the next day. She did an excellent job, shortening and hemming all 4 pairs in the exact way they were hemmed previously. The service was excellent, the price was reasonable. I will definitely be bringing more clothes to be altered. My only downfall with this place is she only takes cash and the place is very crammed and small. She needs to hire help because she let this lady go in front of me even though I was patiently waiting because my measurements were going to take longer.
