Wow. I don't think I've ever been so let down by a restaurant --ever. After reading the reviews on Yelp, I was super excited to go there for my big birthday dinner. And, at first glance, I was WOWED and floored by the slick look of the place. The place looked like a reconstructed snow ladden forest, cool and white-- & a relaxing atmosphere. I was almost certain that I'd receive exceptional service from the moment I stepped in the door. Just as I thought, we had reservations at 8pm and were sat at 7:55pm
After we were sat down, we quickly found out that our waitress was loopy and passive. We spent some time looking over the menu, --and while we sat there-- she took forever to come over and tell us the specials. She look strained while trying to remember the three specials of the evening, and well she wasn't nasty or rude, just--had no waitressing talent. She didn't fit the feel of the restaurant at all--I actually thought that she was the perfect fit to sling beers at the Sunset Grille in Allston--but was way out of place for Sorellina.
So after we order appetizers, the waiter brings them over and immediately SPILLS bright orange sauce ALL over my parents expensive WHITE jackets.
I was shocked. They were shocked. Despite the splattered orange splotches, I was impressed with my parents. My mom smiled a sweet southern smile and was very calm about it. As the waiter, clearly frazzled ran off to get the manager-- she leaned over and told me felt bad for him since, bless his heart, we knew it was an accident. He apologized a hundred times--clearly embarrassed.
Soon the manager came over apologizing for what happened. I had to fight from covering my face in mortification as I watched him spray my parents nice jackets with cleaning spray. He literally "shouted" it out while we were at the table. Of course he offered to dry clean the jackets which was nice of him, but I think not enough to save us from what was soon to be an awkward dinner.
After that, I was secretly wishing that they would offer to pay for at least SOME of the meal as well to compensate for what happened. Afterall, it was my birthday dinner! Alas, no, they didn't offer. They didn't have to of course, but it would have been nice considering the fact my parents weren't rude about the event--and the fact it was a serious misstep on a very special occasion. My parents remained calm, but I seriously was FUMING.
Another thing that pissed me off, is that whenever we asked our waitress for something she kept asking us to repeat ourselves. Anyone who knows me knows I'm pretty loud--in fact my whole family is loud--but when my father had to repeat himself 3 times asking for a V.O and diet with a splash of coke on top--finally (obviously fed up) he told her he didn't want anything at all-- I was pissed! ARG
As for the food, granted, I was pleased, but not nearly pleased enough to make up for the misstep on the part of Sorellina. The Tuna Tar Tar was okay, but the Pasta appetizers were exceptional. Highly recommended--and my scallops with sweet corn & mashed potatoes were exceptional. I tried the lamb, veal, and Cornish hen my parents ordered and all were very tasty. Clearly there is nothing wrong with what's going on in the kitchen, but I am disappointed, deeply and profoundly disappointed with the way that the manager handled the misstep of his staff.
I don't expect special treatment when it's undeserved. In fact, my reviews are generally (if you take a look) mostly positive. I try to focus on the good things. However, Sorellina, you have the honor of having spilt orange sauce all over my beautiful birthday and on my parents who traveled all the way from Florida to see me--and despite their pleasantness--you did nothing to assuage them (or me)except offer to pay their drycleaning bills? I couldn't wait to get the hell out of there.
Your food might be divine, but thanks for nothing.

EDIT: Hmm, I wonder if the manager saw this review. My father fortunately was able to get the stain out of his (and my mom's jacket) from the local cleaner in Florida. Thank goodness, but the manager felt bad about the whole event I guess and had a change of heart. Instead of just offering to pay the cost of the cleaning, he credited my parents $150 for their trouble. I really appreciate that (even though I think it would have been better in the moment) it's good to know that he actually put forth the effort to try to fix it in the end. + 1 star. read more
