Came to Sora with a group of four on a Saturday to celebrate a very late birthday dinner. It's on the busy streets of Sunset Park, and honestly if you walked by you might not even notice it. The entrance is super sleek and subtle. Inside, the staff greeted us right away and even took our coats, which was a nice touch. Sora is an 1 course omakase. Chef Takizawa trained in Japan and brought that experience to NYC. The fish was fresh and prepared with care, but overall I found the courses a little rice heavy compared to other omakase I've been to. The wasabi also felt off; sometimes barely there, sometimes way too strong, which took away from the flavor of the fish. Our server explained that the type of fish can affect how the wasabi tastes, which makes sense, but it didn't change that the balance felt inconsistent. For me, it was a bit expensive for what it was, especially being on 8th Ave. That said, the staff were genuinely nice and attentive, which made the night more enjoyable. Glad I tried it once, but probably wouldn't rush back.

The food was nothing short of outstanding. Every piece of sushi was prepared with incredible attention to detail and melted in my mouth. The ocean trout nigiri was rich, buttery, and beautifully fresh, while the seared toro nigiri had the perfect balance of buttery and smokiness, a true standout bite, but the star for me was the Uni bowl, which came with both Maine and Santa Barbara uni. Service was just as impressive as the food. Our chef Jeff explained each dish with great detail and staff were attentive, welcoming, and clearly passionate about what they do. Overall, Sora exceeded all expectations. Between the quality of the fish, the impeccable service, and the serene ambiance. Highly recommend to anyone looking for an elevated dining experience in the Brooklyn!

First high-end omakase restaurant in the Sunset Park neighborhood. From the exterior entrance to the lobby and dining space, the decor gives a clean and zen vibe. Since we were the only group for an afternoon reservation, we received great service -- perhaps too attentive. For September, Sora ran an "all you can eat omakase and sake" experience for $120. This was my first AYCE experience for an omakase so I was ready to eat lots of high quality sushi. We were served the usual course then was able to get unlimited pieces of specific nigiris such as scallop, sweet shrimp, tuna, and wagyu. We left stuffed with delicious sushi in our bellies. Sora goes by a more traditional omakase with concentration on the quality and flavor of the fish, rather than the usual gimmicky omakases most people might be used to where chefs top lots of caviar, uni or other fancy toppings on top of the fish. I did find some pieces to be a bit saltier than usual but everything still tasted delicious.

Just absolutely exquisite. The chef blends his own soy sauce (I don't think he actually brews his own!), and the sushi rice is one of the best I've ever had in my life. Each course builds on another. Our seating started with 2 courses of sashimi, then a wonderful chawanmushi topped with marinated ikura before the pieces of nigiri started. After the course was done, we were offered add-on uni temaki, which we greedily accepted. The dessert of a coconut flan topped with matcha ended dinner perfectly. Reservations are still easily available, but when more connoisseurs of sushi discover this, it may easily end up with seats being hard to score. The decor is modern Japanese, a bit austere.

Amazing omakase. We had a lovely experience thanks to the attentive staff and unbelievably fresh ingredients. We ended up being the only two guests for the 5pm seating, so our dinner felt very personal - such a special time. The restaurant is super soothing, but also has a bit of a unique flair with the large robot(?) figurine collection. The food itself was great - we were told it was all flown in from Japan, with the exception of the king salmon. Every bite was amazing, and I thought they used larger slices of seafood than most places. Would say my only suggestion would be to have a non-dairy dessert option - I would up with a small fruit plate instead of their matcha pana cotta (but that may have been because I forgot to mention the dairy restriction until like 24 hours before oops). Def worth checking out!

A newly opened omakase restaurant located in Sunset Park (right next to Popeyes!). They have been opened for a couple months now. The outside is so unassuming but as soon as you walk through the doors, it's like you got transported somewhere else. It doesn't feel like 8th Avenue at all. The decor inside is very japandi style. Big space inside with two restrooms (and Jo Malone soap). I liked the door separating the seating area from the reception. Appointment was easy to make on resy (there's lot of availability). They have a promotion going on for the month of September for $120 14 course omakase with unlimited add ons for 5 nigiris and unlimited sake. We were seated promptly and the staff were very attentive and welcoming. We were offered the unlimited house sake which was so sweet and not dry at all. I've had my fair share of bitter / dry sake but this sake was quite delicious. The staff made sure our waters and sake were filled! The sushi chef was also friendly and we had fun interactions with each other. The courses came out at a good pace and at the end of the meal, we put in our orders for the unlimited add ons. For our meal, the choices were: lean tuna, seared salmon, scallop, sweet shrimp, and wagyu. My regret was not eating more! I still had stomach space but wanted to leave at a comfortable full and not stuffed full. The ending dessert was a matcha ice cream with a chocolate brownie and that was so good. Everything from the food to the service and the ambiance were amazing. I had a great time and experience! Only thing we noted after we left was that we didn't get a course of uni! That was a little disappointing. Overall: great addition to the neighborhood, a little pricey but the quality and service makes up for it. Take advantage of the current promotion!

Tucked away among the humble storefronts and Chinese dives of Brooklyn's 8th Ave Chinatown, Soran is a hidden gem--unassuming from the outside, but offering a high-end omakase experience that rivals the best. It's the kind of place you'd walk right past if you didn't know better. But step inside, and you're transported to a world of precision, care, and exceptional quality. Chef Takizawa, trained in Japan, is a master of his craft. Watching him delicately prepare each piece of sushi feels like a performance--every movement intentional, every cut perfect. Fish is flown in from Japan, and you can taste the difference. This is not your typical neighborhood sushi joint. The quality here is on par with what you get at Tsukiji Market in Tokyo. Standouts? The uni scrambled eggs--unexpected and sublime, a specialty of the chef. The hamachi was buttery and clean, the A5 wagyu sushi was melt-in-your-mouth perfect (especially when seared with burning oak right in front of us), and the curry rice--made from wagyu stock--was a warm and comforting. One memorable moment was watching Chef Takizawa fry white fish fresh in front of us. Each piece is presented with care, and the staff respectfully explains every detail, enhancing your appreciation with every bite. This is the kind of omakase that's not just about eating--it's about experiencing. A perfect spot for a special occasion or date night. The staff was incredibly attentive, adding just the right personal touch. A once-in-a-lifetime meal that you'll definitely want to have more than once.

One of the best omakase I been to. I had such an amazing experience. All the staff members were so friendly. I was pouring out of no where and I had no umbrella, but I got lucky because they let me stay in until the rain died down. I do enjoy my fish pieces like scallop and toro. However their appetizer/entree are sooooo good like their cod with truffle rice , toro ikura and uni don, soba noodle and their steam egg. You can see me do my little happy dance with every bite. If you don't mind spending a little extra for omakase this is definitely the spot to try.

BEST find of 2024 so far!!! My friend told me about this place as she's a frequent goer since they opened. They offer Omakase options for $135 and $160 The meal is carefully thought out by the chef, serving appetizers to start, followed by a couple nigiri pieces, a break from nigiri with a chawnmushi course and a cod uni bowl, continuing with the rest of the nigiri pieces and ending off with the perfectly balanced dessert. Literal foodgasm! We got the 18 course for $160 and got the best of everything. The ingredients were premium quality (uni, caviar, otoro, wagyu etc.) We were staffed by the end! I love that the chef was generous with the portions, the caviar was more than I expected. Every single one of nigiri was beautifully curated and thought out with the sequence of lighter fish working its way towards fattier fish. Waiting staff were nice and great. Definitely will be back for more. PS: great decor! I didn't take much pic since I was chatting with friends, it's something you'll have to see for yourself with your own eyes.

I came here for a late dinner at 9pm with a group of 8 to celebrate a birthday. There was no one but our group here. I have to say this is a really nice space. Nice natural wood interior, minimalist with some interesting figures in the entrance area. We were seated once the group was there. The price is $160-pricey for this area of Brooklyn that is mostly known for cheap eats. You are given a menu of drinks, otherwise chef gets to work to start preparing your omakase meal. The meal was a little chaotic--maybe because it was one chef for 8 people. The service was inconsistent. None of the fish stood out. The chef quickly says what he's giving you but was hard to understand. Just wanted the dinner to be over due to its inconsistencies. Probably wouldn't come back. For the price, can have better omakase multiple times over elsewhere or somewhere else in general

One of the best omakase experiences I've had. The quality of the fish was outstanding, seasoning was perfectly balanced, and the progression of courses was well paced. Truly impressive craftsmanship by the chef.

This is a hidden gem located in the middle of borough/sunset park area. If you walk a little fast you might miss it since the outside has a minimalistic low key entrance. Once you walk inside you feel as it you are transformed to a place in the city. You can tell that the design and decor was well thought out to create a little calm oasis in the middle of bustling 8th ave. The waiting area is seperate from the dining area which was a very smart design choice, since omakase is usually reserved for certain time frames the guest who are still enjoying their meal arent distracted or the experience isnt getting taken away by the people who arrive early for the next omakase seating. The bathroom itself is really nice too, fancy bidet toilet and jo malone diffuser. (IYKYK) The music and the lighting is just right and the servers and chef were very attentive and friendly. Calvin who was our server ensured that our tea and sake cups and water were always full and that our plates were cleaned frequently in between pieces of sushi. i liked that this place is a bar only seating which might or might not work best for everyone. Personally bar seating is preferred for me since you get to watch the chef do his magic and its a more interactive experience. This is a great place if you can manage to find 12-13 people and book out the whole restaurant to have a little gathering. I would say this type of omakase leans more traditional where there isn't alot of garnishing or toppings (yuzu, truffle etc) to enhance the fish, this is the type of sushi where the flavor of the fish speaks for itself. Is this the best omakase i been to? probably not, but i do feel as though it was great value for the price. There were a few hits and misses for me. The chawamushi, the toro, artic char, and hokkaido uni with smoked trout egg over rice were some of my highlights. I found that the soy sauce that was used on a few of the pieces was too salty for my preference, like the smoked bonito, wagyu and tuna tartare although delicious was a tad bit salty. I wasn't a fan of the fresh water eel, the texture and consistency wasn't there for me and someone from the group who had been there previously said it was better previously cause the chef jeff would grill it in front of you. The miso black cod over truffle rice had a bit too much rice wine vinegar and leaned a bit too sour. Overall this was a great experience and i would recommend for someone on a date night or celebrating a special occasion.

Are you craving delicious high-end omakase? Look no further! This is the spot to go. You might get distracted by how organized the restaurant is and the care that goes into each sushi piece. Be careful not to get too hypnotized, especially if you're with a date! When you first walk in, you will be greeted by a huge dog. Don't be alarmed; the only thing you need to fear is how tasty the food is. One of the first things we noticed was the display of figures on the shelf and the huge sliding door that led to the bar. The bar area is spotless, giving off a minimalist vibe. I particularly liked the Gundam models in the corner of the bar area. Pretty lady and I both got the omakase set, and it was delicious. Each piece of sushi was handled with care and precision. Make sure to mention if you are lactose intolerant to avoid any diary. This was a long, enjoyable experience that provided a perfect atmosphere for a date. You can relax, share tasty food and enjoy each others company. Overall, I would recommend this omakase restaurant to anyone bringing a date who loves sushi.

From the start, the menu felt a little overwhelming, but I actually liked how much variety there was. They've got your everyday sashimi, sushi, rolls, and some specials, plus plenty of hot food like bento boxes, noodles and rice dishes. There are even party trays if you're grabbing food for an event. With so many options, there's something for everyone in your group. The fish was fresh overall, though it leaned more mild than that buttery, sweet richness you get from higher grade cuts. The salmon belly was good but not as rich or melty as I hoped. The toro was nicely torched with that perfect buttery flavor. They also had Santa Barbara uni that night, which was solid, just not the most sweet batch I've had. They were already sold out of their Hokkaido uni that evening. We also tried the monkfish liver appetizer, it was mild and clean tasting, though I wished it had more of that rich, creamy depth you sometimes get from good quality ankimo. It came plain, but once I asked for a little ponzu, it helped balance the flavor. The space itself is clean and very bright, with an open layout where you can easily hear other tables, lively but not too loud. Service was friendly and polite, though a bit on the inexperienced side. Everyone was kind and tried their best, just small moments where communication or timing could be smoother. It was a quiet Sunday afternoon for lunch. Decided on a sushi for appetizer and a rice don bowl for meal. Lunch special had any 2 rolls for $8.95 and they have a spicy scallops roll. It turn out to be a California roll with chopped spicy scallops on top. If I knew, I would not have gotten it as I imagine a spicy tuna roll but with scallops. I don't normally get California roll (not basic) because I also don't know what imitatation crab Kani stick product they are using as I have a crustacean allergy. Some Kani stick is purely fish and some have crab extract in it which I can't have. I wish there menu had more details/informations but most sushi places don't list what is in the rolls and expect you to know it or Google it. But for people with allergies (yes, I know, why eat sushi if I have a crustacean allergy but there are other options for me), we would love to know what is in the dish. Ordered: 2 rolls for $8.95: eel avocado & spicy scallop rolls and a Salmon Eel Don. Lots of rice for don and good portion fish. Zoomed in photo of the spicy scallop sushi showed it was California roll with the chopped spicy scallops on top. Overall, enjoyed my lunch. Would definitely come back to try other dons and noodles.
