Updating my review - I came back and got the pomegranate matcha and pistachio croissant and both were lifechanging. The lemon croissant was too much but the pistachio was perfectly balanced. We came to this cafe after looking up cafes with matcha near us. The ambiance of the cafe is great - I really liked the openness of the sitting area and it seemed like a good place to do light work and/or people watching. However, my low review is due largely to the matcha itself. Both me and my friends got matcha lattes and we were super disappointed. It was very imbalanced in terms of milk to matcha ratio - I could barely taste any matcha at all! I honestly felt like I was just drinking straight up milk with green food coloring. I usually make my own matcha lattes and drinks at home so I'm familiar with how matcha is supposed to taste, and this was not it. The matcha latte with fruit (mango or passion fruit?) probably would taste better simply because of the fruit puree. I would not recommend this cafe for a simple matcha latte - but if you get sometime else on the menu or just want to come for the nice vibes, you might be better off. read more

I got sweet cream cold brew and a strawberry croissant. Cold Brew was on the acidic side, not my preference, but not bad with the vanilla cream. This place is in east Lincoln park in Chicago but it has a NYC vibe to it . Solid breakfast menu. My avocado toast was a little bit on the bland side and a little light on the avocado part but the side of burrata it came with made it better . They also have shakshuka on the menu which I spied at my neighbor's table and I'm trying it next time. My latte was very good. The Pastries are beautiful looking ( be warned you'll pay almost 8$ for a single croissant) Overall, crowded ( but line moved fairly quickly ) and pricy with solid breakfast options . If you aren't on a budget, don't mind long lines, aren't looking for a place to relax/ do work and are ok eating amongst with a bunch of wealthy, trendy 20/30 something's you should try it . Got the passion mango matcha and it was awful. Tasted like a mango smoothie, literally tasted like juice it up or jamba juice. zero matcha flavor at all. If you can't make good matcha, why even have it on the menu? Coffee shops really need to stop serving it if they don't know what they're doing. The worker who took my order was extremely rude, clearly didn't want to be there, and made my drink in about 2 seconds. Free Wi-Fi and water don't make up for bad drinks and bad service. A cafe and roaster that serves various kinds of beautiful and delicious pastries and simple and fresh breakfast sandwiches and salads. One shiny La Marzocco machine, two professional roaster machines, and bags of beans sourced from different countries / areas for purchase. I particularly like their simple yet focused coffee and tea menu. The cafe was so busy and packed around 10am this Sunday! The host was very friendly and helpful though which made you feel better after a long wait in line. Since he was the single person who takes orders and takes care of grabbing pastries from the case, he was very busy. You basically would not wait too long after that pay step. Pastries get sold out fast and they will refill as they make at the back. Latte was smooth and rich - nothing super special but we really had nothing to complain about. The espresso tonic with Ethiopian espresso was very refreshing and tasted strong. Hubby thought his ham sandwich was not big for the price that we paid for but tasted good. My pistachio cheesecake and hummus with toasted bread were really delicious and I highly recommend them. I also used the spring blend beans for espresso at home. My friends and I visited here on Sunday and it was packed! The cafe itself is pretty small so we had to snatch a table as soon as there's one available. They have only a decent menu election for coffee and food. We tried the latte which was decent, espresso tonic which is more on the sour side but it wasn't too bad, and a sweet cold brew. For food we tried the croissants which had cream filling and they were delicious! My favorite was the Turkey sandwich on brioche, perfect balance of flavor and the kale salad was just perfect. They have many other selections of pastries like cakes and canele. I wish I had the appetite to try everything! Definitely will return for another visit so I can try other items. read more

I love community tables because we got to listen in on conversations. :) However, we had plenty of privacy as well and could have sat at a two seater, away from the long table. You can also sit inside. The coffee was delcious and the food was really good. I had the avocado toast and got so much more than expected. (It came with an egg and side salad. Yum!) DIdn't know what to expect, but everything was far worse than imagined. Service and setting: 2 Staff were unfriendly, unhelpful, and miserable altogether. Cafe isn't clean. Banana bread: 1 GROSS. This is NOT banana bread, nor a good twist on it. Shakshuka: 2 Not at all your traditional, good MidEastern Shakshuka, and not a good twist on it, either. Bland and bad. Pistachio croissant: 1 Neither fresh nor natural tasting. Lattes: 2 Acidic coffee. Iced matcha: 1 Gross. We ordered the items to go, and tossed just about everything after a couple of bites and sips. EVERYTHING went in the trash just a few steps outside of the cafe. Worst part of this experience? My gf and I, along with our sons, both wanted to pay for the items at checkout. As we both attempted to, one card was charged. We checked the tablet system to see whose card went through, and the card charged belonged to someone else! We double checked our card statements, and neither of us were charged. I told the lady that she charged someone else's card, and that neither my gf nor I had paid for the items. She said a card went through, and the receipt is proof that the items were paid for. I repeated the reality to her, and she shrugged it off. Someone foreign to us unknowingly paid for our bill, including a generous tip, and the staff not only didn't care but couldn't be bothered to rectify their error! AWFUL. Wildly inconsistent experience here. First time I had a fantastic sandwich and latte, great service. I was just here today and unfortunately nothing went right. When I stepped up to order, the employee stood there on his phone not even greeting me. After a minute he looked up and said "one sec" then went back to his phone. After a few minutes, someone else stepped in to take my order. Then I waited 30 minutes for my sandwich. I asked for an update after 20 minutes and was only told they were backed up. Have been here a few times now since I live relatively close by. The coffee is decent and so is the food. The one thing is that it's really really expensive. Spending almost $30 for chai tea and a Turkey sandwich is a bit steep. I think I'll come here as a treat for myself every so often - and just stick to a beverage. Baristas are very nice. We checked with the barista at the counter--she confidently told us it would be "ready in two minutes." Cute. Fifteen minutes later? Still nothing. Not even a hint of food smelling anywhere in the universe. We went back to cancel, and instead of an apology, we got a look like we'd just personally insulted her ancestors. No "sorry," no "we messed up," nothing. Just: "We only have one cook." Ah yes--because clearly that explains why communicating with customers is impossible. My husband, baby, and I came here for the first time and had a great experience! We came around 8:30 AM so there was a short line. We waited about 5 minutes for our drinks and 10 minutes for our food. Our favorites were the breakfast sando and pistachio croissant. The breakfast sando had a hashbrown which was crispy on the outside and there was also sweet corn in the egg which I thought was interesting. My husband got the shakshuka which was good, but just a note that it is Arabic shakshuka and not Turkish. There was a large patio which was perfect for our baby to sit in his stroller and for other patrons who brought their dogs! Unfortunately, it didn't taste like matcha at all--someone else had said it tastes like Jamba Juice & I agree with that sentiment. I didn't end up finishing it. I came with a friend on a Sunday and left fairly unimpressed. The staff just seemed annoyed with us. Granted, it was a busy Sunday, so I get it. My friend has food allergies, and they weren't sure about various pastries touching each other, so that was a bother because she couldn't eat anything. The egg dish I got was subpar, to be honest. A cute little coffee joint but massively overhyped on Instagram. The croissant had great pistachio flavor but I found the white chocolate on top to be too sweet and the cream filling too heavy. I am a regular at Soloway and live across the street. I came today with my dog and two friends to order from the side window, which I have done multiple times with no issues. However, we were rudely told that we needed to go inside and that it didn't matter we had our dog. He then proceeded to shut the window very aggressively in our faces with no further explanation or polite discourse. I've always had a great experience at Soloway, so this interaction surprised/saddened me. The pictures are misleading. Sure it's the actual product but the taste or concept is where they fail. The avocado toast was virtually tasteless. At $17 it's basically an omelet atop toast with some vegetables that are the only complimentary part of the dish which still remains a snoozer. The turkey sandwich has an extremely tasty bread but also fell flat. Aside from the buttery aspect of the bread this too is tasteless. Pistachio cheesecake was yet another sozzer. Only reason they received 3 stars from is because the strawberry croissant was actually pretty damn good but isn't that like cheating because it's from Dan the baker. We love Soloway! They roast their beans in Ukraine and they are an amazing addition to Chicago's LP neighborhood! It gets very busy on weekends but worth the wait depending on how long you have! I personally prefer on the weekdays when it is less busy. Service wise, I have always had great and friendly service regardless how busy they are. Their space is pretty and bright but there isn't a ton of seating during peak times. Their coffee is great, I am a big fan of their drip (their winter blend is so unique and great) and pour over coffees - the team there has done a great job of describing their beans and flavors to me. The food selection is great, we thought their croissants with creme inside is so unique, delicious, and not too sweet. We haven't tried their savory bfast items yet but that is next on the list! With a great corner location, Soloway's interior is bright and welcoming. We ordered an Americano and a Passionfruit Mango Matcha. The Americano was disappointingly bitter, and we weren't able to taste much of the matcha in the Passionfruit Mango Matcha. All of the food we ordered was delicious, including a strawberry croissant, a little dessert which I forgot the name of, and the Turkey sandwich. The cappuchino looks adorable but unfortunately did not taste very good to me. One weird issue I had was I ordered two separate times because my boyfriend was meeting me, both times I ordered coffee for here and it was served in to go cups so I had to ask to have it remade in a mug.
