I just ordered a large oxtail/p&r meal with a roti skin and I was thoroughly disappointed. First disappointment was the amount of oxtail I received (3 small pieces). Second was the amount of salt in the food. It was so salty that I couldn't eat most of it. Third, the plantains were overcooked and extremely hard (how do you mess up plantains?). I try not to leave bad reviews but this was the 2nd time and the food was that bad. I was very surprised because Soldiers used to be so good. read more

Love this place. I usually go there for breakfast once a week on my day off. Liver, salt fish, green banana, dumpling and yam. Also got lunch a few times, yum. It's buffet style, another reason why I love going there. Recommend it to anyone looking for good West Indian food. read more

I've eaten here a few times. The prices are cheaper than other places.. I understand why.. The food is just ok. The fried fish was tough and tasted old so it probably wasn't the freshest. The porridge was too watery and sweet. The chicken roti was ok but it was all meat and no potatoes. There's way too many good restaurants in the area to eat here. Soldiers has changed. The food is totally hit or miss which is sad. I came here for breakfast which was very good. The bakes, fritters, fried dumpling, saltfish, mackerel, saltfish and okra, Ackee and saltfish etc are all tasty and well made. Switch over to lunch/dinner, the food is not as tasty as breakfast. The rice and peas was dry and chow mein looked burnt and just not appetizing. The curry chicken was dry. We came around 5 when the food should look presentable and be plentiful but sadly that is not the case. Stumbling upon this Jamaican spot was such great luck! Wow, I've never seen a buffet spread quite like it. Every Caribbean dish you could imagine. Grab a container and pile up the food. It was hard to decide what to try since everything looked so good. My container cost $13 and lasted 2.5 meals, so it was really worth the cost. Highly recommend! They only take cash, by the way. My only negative comment is that the food isn't labeled so I had no idea what I was choosing. It all tasted great, though, so didn't matter in the end. "Don't touch the salmon if you can't afford it" This message, which is on the buffet made me chuckle. I wish that I had taken a picture of it. Maybe next time. With that aside, it is great that this place exists in the area because diverse food options are very limited in these parts. The restaurant had pretty much everything incorporated in the buffet-a combination of Jamaican and typical Southern delights. I think there was some salad things, too. The food itself is pretty standard; there was no wow factor for me. However, the place must be doing something right because it is always crowded during lunch and dinner. The buffet is more of a pack and carry but there are a few tables if you want to eat there. The interior has a no frills look about it, but one is not looking for an elegant dining experience here. You just want some good food. Speaking of good food, the curried-stewed chicken is one of my favorites. Big Tip: this place is cash only. read more

If you're like me and love dumplings, try to make it here exactly when they open. It goes quick! There should be a refill for them in the late afternoon but sadly, the pan is always scraped clean. The pineapple fried chicken is delicious. Watch out for tiny bones in the salt fish, still the best and not too crazy salty. The fried dumplings are perfection. A little pricey on the oxtails, especially when there isn't that much meat on the bones. Some days they take card, some days it's cash only so bring cash with you just in case. I've Been Buying From From Soldier's Restaurant From Years. Especially, Their Porridge And Bakes; I Love This Place. Would Recommend

Some of the food taste good, but some are hit or miss. Although they charge you by the pound, be careful if you add fish or oxtail to your meal, because they will charge you about $6 extra for it. That's why even if you close your plate the cashier opens it and looks at your meal so they can sneak in some extra charges. I've seen them allow their friends to get away with the meal for cheap, and then they overcharge someone else in the line to make up for it. I think also if business is going slow one day, they overcharge you on your meal to make up for their losses. Smh. Be careful with the lo mein, rice & peas, and some of the vegetable dishes during the summertime. By the time you get home (in under an hour) this meal could be sour and starting to spoil or just plain inedible. Also, sometimes the food is not well cooked or seasoned, as if it was prepared in a rush. read more

The Door in Queens or Vee's on Nostrand Ave. in Brooklyn can cook. This joint puts out No taste food! I ordered a chicken Roti and it was so bland and dry. Everything was generally good...not the best Caribbean food by far, but still good. I normally do not do buffets. It's just something about them that curbs me away. I saw this place on Yelp and said ill but the rating was so high that sense I had to walk past it anyway, I should at least stop in and see what it's like. Buffets tend to seem seem crowded and unappeasing to me. That wasn't the case here and I'm thankful or else I would have walked out. After prowling around both lanes to see what the offerings were and deeming them "likely to be safe" I grabbed a smaller circular tin container and made my way to rice and peas to build a bed for the jerk chicken and goat portions that I would rest atop it next to some baked macaroni pie. I stuffed my plate pretty well and topped it off with a few plantains as well. Like I said everything was just good. The Mac wasn't the best but it was as good as anything that you're fun aunt would prepare for you. The jerk chicken was really good and the goat was tender. The plantain, which I thought looked a bit dry but couldn't turn down, turned out to be tasty as well. This was a solid meal. If I lived a little closer to this place it'd probably be my go-to spot for those nights that I'm not really sure what I want and the price (based on weight) weighs out nicely for the portion size. read more

Their Best food to me is when you go in the morning. I really like their salt fish selections. Craig and their staff are rude, never have the items in stock. I ordered a chicken soup and was owed a replacement fish soup from the last order I placed with them b/c they "forgot to pack the 2nd soup in my order!". I call back after I ordered to confirm the additional fish soup to be told there is no more chicken soup and the fish soup doesn't have much fish. This is the 2and disappointment from them. 4th time back here with my family. This place claims to be the first Caribbean buffet in BK. That may be true but they aren't the BEST. They have a large selection of foods but mainly meat. The Mac n cheese isn't good at all with overdone mushy pasta and clumps of cheese. The spinach was overcooked. If you don't eat meat, this place doesn't offer much variety. There are no labels to describe the dishes so you really can't tell where the meat is. The best thing we had today was the rice and cornbread. The definition of west Indian rudeness. The lady currently at the register is extremely rude. I mean she snatch the money from you. You ask for a bag and she place the bag in the counter. Then when you're paying for your food and you're waiting for your change she give you what she want and goes I don't have any pennies. Well ma am that's not my problem because you clearly charged me to the cents so run me my 4 pennies. Idgaf. Another customer walking behind me also commented that she is extremely rude. This is my 2nd encounter with her but I can't get past the jet-black tattooed eyebrows and her being old enough to be my mama so I don't cuss her ass out. I said I wasn't going back to this place again and this time I mean it. The first encounter I asked for gloves, lady said use the hand sanitizer. Lol why have a sign that say asked for gloves or wash hands in the bathroom. It's been so long that I peep how they now take credit card payments. Eitherway it so said because she literally has an easy job but she is pure miserable. I moved to the area 5 days ago and have already eaten here an embarrassing number of times lol. Don't judge me...I've been too busy to cook. I LOVE that they're open to 1 AM everyday. Good homemade style Jamaican food beats running to the bodega for a sandwich any day! The food is served buffet style and customers are charged by the pound. Everything is fresh...even the fried foods never seem to be soggy. I've tried so far: bake and saltfish, rice and peas, curry chicken, callaloo, fresh fruit, oxtails, fried fish, plantain. Everything was delicious! I would avoid the bottled sorrel though...it was pretty watery. Seating is sparse and the restaurant is small and sometimes crowded but most customers grab their food and go. FYI there are no name placards above the dishes. I grew up in a West Indian home and some of the food is foreign to even me. All in all I love the place and will be getting up early for breakfast tomorrow :D read more

He walks over to where the roach was and swatt it down to the floor then step on it and say " it's ok mamm you can't eat now . The food is good and I find the price reasonable. I will point out I'm vegetarian, so my container is always priced on the lower scale. Typical Jamaican food (I'm Trini) - fresh and awesome variety. You grab a to go box or dine in plate, load your plate picking as you go through the cooked selections which is many and varied (more importantly good too). Selections include chicken, lamb, beef, and whole bunch of sides. I had waaaay over what my plate could carry and it came out to 14.75. That should indicate tops what you will pay for a gluttony fueled plate. The food is good too with the exception of maybe 1 or 2 entrees i tried (which in their defense were sea food and Im never been a huge fan of sea food).
