The chicken wings were amazing as usual, which is why we've returned to Sodam Chicken several times. Unfortunately, tonight's experience was extremely disappointing, specifically because of the service we received from Darlene. We tried the shrimp yakisoba in addition to our wings and mozzarella sticks and unfortunately did not like the flavor of the yakisoba. The frustrating part is that Darlene only asked us one time if everything was okay--and she didn't even come to our table. She asked while checking the thermostat, and at that point we had only eaten our wings and some mozzarella sticks. We had not even tried the yakisoba yet. We waited approximately 15 minutes for her to come back and check on us, but she never did. I eventually went to the counter to get a box. Since she never came back to our table, we also went to the counter to pay, which is different from our previous visits where we were checked out at the table. We explained to Darlene that we didn't enjoy the yakisoba because of the flavor. Instead of simply acknowledging the feedback, she responded rudely that we needed to tell her when she checked on us so it could have been fixed. That was frustrating because she never checked on us after we actually tried the food. How were we supposed to tell her we didn't like something when we hadn't even tried it yet? Then, when I went to tap my phone to pay, Darlene said, "But you're not paying for it, so it doesn't matter." I told her she was being rude, and rather than de-escalating the situation, she began arguing with me and made it seem like we were somehow at fault for not saying anything during the first time she asked. We asked to speak with a manager, and Darlene told us that she was the manager. We weren't upset simply because we didn't like a dish. We understand that not every menu item is going to be everyone's taste. What we expected was basic customer service and an opportunity to actually communicate our concerns. Instead, we were blamed for not reporting an issue that we literally hadn't discovered yet, followed by a rude response when we attempted to explain it. The wings are still excellent, and we've had good experiences here before, which is why tonight was particularly disappointing. Sodam Chicken has one of the best value and taste combinations around for larger parties. My friends and I enjoy the Shoreline location so knew this one would be good. While this is their Capitol Hill location, it's a little further out from the main area of CapHill. Washrooms (restroom for search keywords). Friendly service, but nothing over the top as they simply took orders and brought it fresh. They brought pickled radish out with the chicken which is standard, but the radish was very fresh, meaning they were harder, sharper in flavor, and not as flavorful as a result of not being pickled long enough. Starter Set - we opted for mozzarella sticks, onion rings, and fries. Would love to see sweet potato fries here (another spot in CapHill proper does offer them) but love this combo for variety. Crinkle cut fries were tasty, nothing special. Mozzarella sticks were nice but lacked a cheese pull. Onion rings were the star of the trio, crispy, sweet, and totally delicious. Soy Garlic Chicken - half orders are about 10 pieces and full orders come with around 20, sometimes more. Chicken was juicy, tender, and sauce was just right. Great flavor! Similar to the Shoreline location, while the wings are a decent size, I feel that many Korean fried chicken spots have larger wings. I used to live next to this Sodam Chicken and loved to grab their lunch specials. I come a little less now after having moved a few blocks away. However I wanted to update my review because of a change in their menu option that made me sad. They used to serve the best shoestring fries, in my opinion, that rivaled McDonald's (still the gold standard!). There's also a shoreline location that's been open a little longer than the Capitol Hill one, but this has everything the shoreline location does and is open late till 11pm. We love getting the half and half party wing fried chicken to try two flavors at the same time. The chicken is fresh, hot, and crispy and the sauces are well balanced. If you're not feeling fried food or want something a little healthier, they have oven roasted and stir fried options as well. HONEST review- We ordered the rice cracker boneless chicken and it came a little pink inside. We told our super nice waitress and she accommodated us, and brought back our order more cooked. Once it was fully cooked we were impressed by how tender the meat still was. We also got the soy garlic bone in, this one was great. It was so very crispy, I can't speak much for the interior since we ordered takeaway and by the time we got back home (12mins away) the chicken was still incredibly crispy. Then they decided to tell me to contact chowbus claiming they can't refund it themselves because it's a third party service (we ordered directly from the site). Chowbus refused to offer a refund. They contacted the restaurant's manager who also refused to authorize them to refund it. Absolutely horrible customer service. If they care more about $15 than a repeat customer, so be it. My group wanted to check out Sodam after seeing videos for it on Instagram/TikTok. For a Friday night, I was surprised to see there were few tables filled throughout the time that we stayed, but it is a little bit out of the way compared to other popular restaurants. There were a lot of options for chicken! We decided to get the half & half order of chicken wings with soy garlic and yangnyeom as our sauces. I enjoyed how crispy the wings were and the sauces were very nice. I liked that their soy garlic was not as salty as some other places but still had good flavor. The yangnyeom was my favorite out of the two - the sauce was a good sweet but did not have much spice at all. I love that they gave each person their own bowl of radish instead of giving just one or two bowls to share! For our other dishes we got the starter plate with mandu, french fries, and mozzarella sticks, topoki (interesting they call tteokbokki this), and kimchi fried rice. I did not like that the fries were kind of oily and not crispy. I felt the other dishes we got were pretty standard; nothing really stood out to me as amazing. I felt that the food took a while to come out. They did have a lot of online/delivery orders while we were there, so that may be it? The food came out all at once and piping hot, which some people may enjoy. But sometimes for me I prefer things to come out one by one so I can snack on it. It took a while for our waiter to notice we were done, and I noticed another table had the same issue as well. I just had the worst service I've ever seen here, and that's really sad because I'd come to count this place as a really great spot in the neighborhood. I came in and granted, I looked and probably smelled a little rough as I'd just managed to set my instant pot on fire. My apt was too smoky to stay in, so I came in expecting the usual friendly faces and helpful service. No such luck! I waited forever for my order to be taken. I had my son and fiance join me but they got no water glasses, no plates, no utensils. We asked for Sprite and never saw it. Great korean fried chicken! We came with a large party and made a reservation ahead of time. The place was quite busy when we arrived, so definitely make a reservation if you have a large group. There is quite a good number of seats available inside though, and it's nice and spacious. We got the half and half along with the tteokkbokki + seaweed noodle rolls to share amongst 4 people, which was the right amount for us. The chicken was crispy and juicy, and I liked how there wasn't much batter. The soy garlic flavor was delicious, and with the gold you can pick 2 sauces to dip it in. I definitely preferred soy garlic, but both were good. The seaweed glass noodle rolls were super crispy and perfectly cooked, and the tteokkbokki was filled with veggies as well which all were absolutely delicious in the sauce. This part of Capitol Hill is quite residential so there is street parking and a couple dedicated spots in their garage. Usually come here for the lunch special which is $12 and you get six pieces of fried chicken and two sides. It's definitely one of the best deals I've seen around. I love the deep fried chicken wing options - there are so many sauces to pick from but the gangjung is my favorite. The oven baked ones are not bad as well. The food typically takes about 20 minutes to come out, but it is all made to order and very fresh. I ended up paying around $23 for myself, which is quite the deal considering the combo came with two full-sized chicken wing meals, one yakisoba, one fried rice, 5 mandu, 5 spring rolls, and a 2 liter soda, so I would definitely recommend getting their combo set if you can. Most of the non-chicken dishes were alright: not outstanding but tasted ok. Everything came out fresh and hot which was really nice. The fried chicken was great: juicy, tender, and flavorful. My favorite was the gang-jang chicken as it was both sweet and savory. The sauce was quite addicting. The yangnyeom chicken I didn't like as much. So delicious and had just the right amount of kimchi! The Gold Fried Chicken was perfectly fried and had great flavor and so did the Yang Nyeom Chicken. And the service here was great!
