I loooooove Japanese curry and the curry omurice definitely hit the spot. The pieces of fried chicken were super juicy and crispy and the rice was not soggy The curry ramen, was too heavy for me. The flavor was good but wouldn't recommend it as your first meal of the day
Oh yea! If you are looking for a home cooked meal away from home... this is it. This gives you the home soul food vibe. It's light healthy and nourishing And the service is quick and easy. I'm on a buisness trip so this made me feel right at home during the holiday travel. I ordered the salaried saba, drinks and the salmon carpaccio for an appetizer!
Cute cafe vibes. Friendly service. Surprisingly good food. Ordered an iced matcha latte unsweetened, which I'm usually picky about, but it has a good flavor and no bad after taste. Then got the tsukune don, which had a good amount of takoyaki sauce to give it umami, but not too salty. Would love to come back to try the udon next time, which I think it's better known for.
This cozy Japanese restaurant is very laid back and great place to grab Japanese home cooking. They serve delicious meals promptly fast but last time I was slightly disappointed because I ordered "Hamachi Kama" and it came deep fried. Majority of times Kama is grilled, not deep fried. My favorite dish here is definitely shrimp burger(Ebi katsu)!
3.5 stars. Soboku is a cozy spot in park slope. There's cute booths to sit by the windows. Our waitress came to take our order not too long. The restaurant is small and I think there is limited staff members so bare with them. We came for brunch and order a few items to try. We ordered truffle tots, sesame cucumbers, mentaiko udon, toryufu creamy udon, and a toryofu mazemen (on their summer special menu). The portion of cucumbers were very small, I felt Like they could've added a bit more cucumber. The truffle tots were great - you can't mess this up. The mentaiko udon was creamy and delicious. The toryufu had a creamy mushroom sauce but this was lacking flavor. We threw this into the leftover mentaiko udon sauce to give it more flavor. The toryofu mazemen was throwing me off the whole time. The sauce was really really sweet and there was a lot of liquid in my bowl- I'm taking about half the bowl had sauce / liquid. Mazemen is suppose to be dry and it said it on their menu as well. I couldn't eat it because it was just way too sweet. Overall I had this place bookmarked for a while. Maybe I should give it another chance during dinner service.
Came here on Saturday for brunch and the restaurant was pretty quiet! But the food was amazing! I enjoyed the omurice with the fried chicken. It was flavorful and paired so well together! The cream pasta was also a nice addition to the meal to give different textures and flavors! The staff was super sweet and tentative and the food was made to order! The decor was also really cute inside with rustic vibes and they had these window seat nooks that were perfect for an intimate date!
Ordered kaarage, takoyaki, curry katsu, and curry shrimp tempura. Super delicious and good portions. Great dinner vibes and good attentive service.
SOBOKU is a nice little Japanese place which has gotten more and more popular every time I've passed by which isn't that surprising because the prices are pretty decent (especially for the area) and the food is overall good. If this place was on Yelp in Tokyo or something, it would be presumably listed as Western Style Japanese Food or Yōshoku/洋食 as they specialize in western inspired Japanese food such as curry, katsu, hambagu, and the like so I wouldn't exactly recommend ordering ramen here. The staff is friendly here and it's pretty casual inside. For drinks, I've only had Iced Green Tea here though the sake selection is a bit better than average such as Dasai Blue by the glass/carafe among others as well as a handful of cocktails. For appetizers, I liked the Salmon Carpaccio I had once with raw salmon and scallion with a yuzu-soy dressing for $13. The dressing had a subtle sour sweet flavor which complimented the nice rich slices of salmon with the salmon also being thicker than most other spots which is appreciated as it felt a bit more filling. I would recommend this if you want something that isn't too heavy as many of the other appetizers are fried and you're not looking for edamame or something. For mains, I liked the Kurobuta Katsu Karē or Berkshire Pork Loin Cutlet Curry for $18. The pork loin could have been a bit more tender but the slices of fried pork were large and it was well fried. The curry/kare has very good flavor with a good texture as well being more comparable to some curry spots which closed in Midtown. The portion size is also decent for the area as well. The poached egg I got as extra was fine though I wouldn't bother next time as it wasn't necessary and the dish came with some pickled veggies as usual. Less successful is the Soboro Don for $17 consisting of sautéed ground pork over rice with teriyaki sauce, Japanese mayo, scallions, sesame seeds and poached egg where I found the combination of sauces a bit too sweet and overpowered the flavors making it a tad too rich as well. The food here is good though it is not a place I would recommend from far away to travel. It definitely fills in a niche as the only other Japanese spot in the area are ramen spot which has higher prices than here (Kazarishi,) sushi places which range from fancy to non-fancy and a fancier albeit much better spot (Hibino) which makes a much crispier katsu though you're paying much more and it doesn't come with a curry so it is hard to say if that spot is worth it more. I would go back to try their unique sounding brunch menu and other things on the main menu such as the hambagu among others. If there was another katsu curry place in the area or if let's say this was in the East Village or something, they would like this niche but for now, it's solid especially for the area. Mid 3 bumped up for the price point.
I came here on a weekday evening and got seated by one of their windows. It's fairly spacious inside. Their menu is filled with illustrations and really cute. We started off with the Shishito Peppers and Crab Cream Korokke and I got the Kurobuta Katsu Teishoku. The peppers were good and came with a white pepper, though I wish they were a bit more bistered. The croquettes came with a tartar sauce which paired nicely with the filling. I felt like the fry on both the katsu and the croquettes were both super good, fried to perfection without being overly greasy. I enjoyed the dressing on the side salad. The katsu itself was well flavored and had sauce on the side. Overall, this was a very enjoyable meal and I would go back!
I've been wanting to try Soboku for a while and my expectations were met. I loved the welcoming atmosphere and Asian decor of the restaurant, I can definitely see why Soboku is considered cozy. The staff were wonderful and worked effortlessly. The Ebi Fry Katsudon was the best donburi I've ever eaten, it had a great savory flavor that almost made me want to order a second bowl! If you're ever in Carroll Gardens, give Soboku a visit.
This place is a gem for brunch! The egg in the omurice was creamy and soft. The curry was delectable and the fried chicken had a good crisp. The avocado crispy tacos were okay but they did put something special in the avocado that made it taste way better than normal mashed avocado. The torfuyu udon was creamy as described and had a nice truffle-y smell. There were plenty of bacon bits in it which was great but I wish there were more mushrooms. The inside is clean and cute. The service is attentive and food came out quick.

Such a cute little spot for delicious Japanese dinner. It's small inside but with enough seating. You may have to wait a bit if you come during rush hours. Soboku serves simple yet delicious food for a rather affordable price compared to prices elsewhere. The decor and overall ambiance is relaxing and inviting. Would come back! read more

We walked all the way though Brooklyn Bridge Park and was looking fir a place to eat that was open on Easter...Luckily we were able to snag a corner table by the window...Great servie, food came out super fast fresh and tasty...would definitely return when in the area. read more

Really enjoyed Soboku! I'd recommend the katsu curry dish, 100%. The restaurant itself is on the smaller end but you're likely to get a table at a non-peak time. The carpaccio, tuna crisp taco item, and croquette apps were good but filling! The burger was good to try but I'd recommend the katsu more. read more

such a good home style meal!! i got the omurice with fried chicken. the egg is so soft and slightly runny. the chicken is so crispy and tender and the sauce pairs well with everything. the fried rice is the classic ketchup fried rice in omurice and i thought this was solid but nothing mind blowing. the rice did feel a little soggy. but overall a great meal! service was great as well and it was a super cozy atmosphere read more

My second visit to Soboku. The first time I tried one of their katsu burgers and the second time I went for the ebi fry curry along with crab cream croquettes. Don't skip the croquettes!! They're really good. The burger was alright and the curry was delicious. The ebi itself, I'm not sure. I wonder if I should have went with the katsu instead for it. read more

pretty cozy restaurant, plenty of seating - we sat by the window and loved to people watch. the salmon was fresh and light! chicken katsu was cooked perfectly though i wish there was just a tad bit more chicken. the gyudon was nice - sweet, savory, and soft! waitresses are friendly and very kind. read more

SOBOKU just opened my initial thoughts are: amazing Japanese food at an affordable price, cozy atmosphere to catch up with a friend, and 10/10 service. For appetizers we ordered the cucumber in sesame oil, crab meat korokke and salmon carpaccio. I really enjoyed how refreshing the cucumbers were and the salmon was good quality! The crab meat korokke was very unique- I've never had anything like it. It was crispy on the outside and super creamy in the inside. For mains we ordered the spicy maguro don and hambagu Kate. The maguro was fresh and they gave a good amount of fish!! The curry was soooo good- definitely recommend ordering it with cheese. The hamburger was juicy and curry was the perfect balance of sweet and mildly spicy (not salty at all) Can't wait to come back! read more

I love the fry that they do - the light crispiness that doesn't make the food soggy but keeps it juicy is perfection! Don't miss on the crab meat korokke and ebi katsu burger!! Saw tons of social media influencers promoting Cozy Japanese Cuisine. "under $20." So, I decided to give it a try. Not very noticeable from the outside. Inside: Upon entering you'll be right in their kitchen. It's a small space. I called ahead and said we'd be a party of 6 & they took my reservation. I was not expecting to be placed in a cramped seating area that could barely fit 4 comfortably - I still had high hopes for the food. Service: Wasn't the best. There was literally one server for a packed restaurant on a weekend. You'd expect at least 2-3 servers & for a restaurant that is trending on social media & whom does their on promotions on IG. Waitress gave us 4 menus for 6 people. So, a minor inconvenience. When she came back she wasn't the most delightful person to deal with. Just what you want and a rushed attitude. I get it - your busy but that isn't a patrons fault for lack of planning on a busy dinner rush evening. Food: Decent selection of food. However - 4 items were not available to order and that was disappointing as they were featured items on their social media. We ordered the ramen, chicken karage rice bowl, hamburger, the takoyaki, fried Octopus and the pork cutlet kare. The ramen was eh. Nothing special. The broth had no real flavor and the chasu was subpar. The chicken karaage was fine - could be crunchy-er. The pork cutlet kare was fine. The pork had too much chewy fat and that was off putting. The curry itself was tasty The Fried Octopus was ok. Lack of seasoning. The hamburger was good - I'd definitely get it again but unfortunately the overall experience makes it a no return. It's unfortunate - yet again - I fell for th social media hype of a restaurant and was let down. There was no cozy Japanese vibe here. Just a wannabe trendy place. Food: - Garlic Butter Edamame: Super tasty, and reminds me of a sauce at Seafood boil - Salmon Carpaccio: Classic sashimi with a kick of soy flavor - Crab Korokke: Mega gushy creamy gooey savory crab custard inside a flakey shell. Eat asap, or else it won't be as satisfying. - Ebi Katsu Burger: Patty was flakey, while the the filling had chunks of actual shrimp giving lots of good contrast in texture. My FAV - Kurobuta Katsu: Thin & crispy outer shell surrounding a thick chunk of meat. - Matcha Latte: So creammyy, and matcha forward I love it - Yuzu Soda: Very refreshing with a subtle citrus flavor Service: Everyone was super sweet and helpful. WOW this is the newest gem in brooklyn!! all the food here comes out piping hot and super fresh, there's not a single thing i disliked. their fried batter is perfectly crisp and not too heavy + the meats inside were both juicy and flavorful. highly recommend their katsus and curry! the food comes out super aesthetic too and the service is so sweet -- you're def going to enjoy your experience here! read more
This Japanese restaurant is unassuming, but everything here from the food to service really blew me away. We arrived on a Sunday during dinner and were seating right away. They're only open for dinner and the menu is pretty affordable (mostly under $20!). My favorites were definitely the korobuta katsu, which was SO crispy (comes with a set of rice & soup) , and the ebi fry kare (the curry and shrimp were both so flavorful). If you're not a fan of fried food, they do have non-fried fish options and you honestly can't go wrong with anything here. read more

I loved this place ! I ordered the kurobuta katsu kare (Berkshire pork loin cutlet) and it was soooooo good. The cutlet was so crispy on the outside, tender and juicy on the inside. I added a poached egg and it was a perfect touch. The curry sauce was amazing. I almost licked the plate clean. We came on a Sunday and did not have to wait. The vibe was really nice; it's also decorated for Halloween right now. I'm already thinking of what to order next when I come! read more

Came across this place on yelp and looked really good. It didn't disappoint!! We got here around 8:45pm and waited maybe 10 minutes for a table for two. From looking at the yelp reviews before arriving, I knew I was going to get the chicken katsu.. we got the crab cream croquettes and spicy tuna tacos for starters and my fiancé got the spicy maguro don. Skipping the crab cream croquettes next time but spicy tuna tacos were so good I can see my fiancé wanting to come back just for that. NEW HIDDEN GEM IN BROOKLYN! (Go before they blow up) This place is soo cute & delicious, yet soo affordable! I believe all the entrees are under $20 and the appetizers are under $10...in this economy?! THAT'S A STEAL Dishes we ordered: -crab meat korokke $8 - PLEASE ORDER THIS -spicy tuna taco $12 -sesame cucumber $7 -salmon capaccio $12 -kurobuta (pork) katsu curry $16 -ebi (shrimp) katsu burger $18 + & lychee soda - sooo good & refreshing! cozy japanese food is probably the best food for the autumn because it just feels so comfy, and i was so happy to discover soboku in brooklyn!! went with some friends for a girl's night and the vibes were so nice. y'all know the fake food displays they have in japan, and then your surprise when the dish comes out exactly like it looks in the display? you can get those same vibes right here LOL the service is so sweet as well and we felt right at home. i would def recommend this spot, especially because i have a feeling they're gonna go viral for how good it is. comfort food does rly hit different during this season! what we ordered (* = my faves): -drinks: hot green tea, white wine -crab meat korokke* -salmon carpaccio -takoyaki -sesame cucumber -kurobuta katsu teishoku (set menu)* -shrimp tempura curry (ebi kare)* -hambagū burger* -beef rice bowl (guydon)* did i mention that everything is under $20?? i loved how the food all came out hot and fresh. the fried stuff wasn't too heavy either, the batter felt super light and crispy perfection. and i wish i could explain how good the japanese curry was with the shrimp tempura because my god, they managed to make it taste even more homey than my own homemade curry. SO good, a must try! a surprising favorite of mine was the hambagū burger. i was actually pretty close to not ordering this because burgers felt weird at this type of restaurant, but our server recommended it and it did NOT MISS. the patty was so juicy and each bite was delicious! but i still think i like the gyudon more because to me, that's peak japanese comfort food and even better with the poached egg on top read more

The restaurant is a hidden gem in Brooklyn. It was a pretty far walk from the train. They played pop music and had soft lighting. I liked the appetizers more than the entrees. The crab meat croquette was very flavorful and it's best eaten when warm. I also love how the spicy tuna taco was crunchy and chewy at the same time. Our servers were very helpful when we asked him for recommendations. read more
Excellent service and food! Come here for the best Japanese comfort food. We tried 6 things on the menu and each was excellent. My favorite was the seasonal ramen they had - it was soupless noodle l dish with excellent flavors. The katsu and gyudon were good as well. read more

Probably the best food I had in Brooklyn. We tried a lot of their dishes and most of them were good. The most delicious curry dish you'll ever eat in your life. I want to eat them every single day, forever. So flavorful by and just the perfect combination of flavors. Great atmosphere, very fast and attentive service. When I come back to the city, I'm absolutely coming back here. read more
