I loooooove Japanese curry and the curry omurice definitely hit the spot. The pieces of fried chicken were super juicy and crispy and the rice was not soggy The curry ramen, was too heavy for me. The flavor was good but wouldn't recommend it as your first meal of the day
Oh yea! If you are looking for a home cooked meal away from home... this is it. This gives you the home soul food vibe. It's light healthy and nourishing And the service is quick and easy. I'm on a buisness trip so this made me feel right at home during the holiday travel. I ordered the salaried saba, drinks and the salmon carpaccio for an appetizer!
Cute cafe vibes. Friendly service. Surprisingly good food. Ordered an iced matcha latte unsweetened, which I'm usually picky about, but it has a good flavor and no bad after taste. Then got the tsukune don, which had a good amount of takoyaki sauce to give it umami, but not too salty. Would love to come back to try the udon next time, which I think it's better known for.
This cozy Japanese restaurant is very laid back and great place to grab Japanese home cooking. They serve delicious meals promptly fast but last time I was slightly disappointed because I ordered "Hamachi Kama" and it came deep fried. Majority of times Kama is grilled, not deep fried. My favorite dish here is definitely shrimp burger(Ebi katsu)!
3.5 stars. Soboku is a cozy spot in park slope. There's cute booths to sit by the windows. Our waitress came to take our order not too long. The restaurant is small and I think there is limited staff members so bare with them. We came for brunch and order a few items to try. We ordered truffle tots, sesame cucumbers, mentaiko udon, toryufu creamy udon, and a toryofu mazemen (on their summer special menu). The portion of cucumbers were very small, I felt Like they could've added a bit more cucumber. The truffle tots were great - you can't mess this up. The mentaiko udon was creamy and delicious. The toryufu had a creamy mushroom sauce but this was lacking flavor. We threw this into the leftover mentaiko udon sauce to give it more flavor. The toryofu mazemen was throwing me off the whole time. The sauce was really really sweet and there was a lot of liquid in my bowl- I'm taking about half the bowl had sauce / liquid. Mazemen is suppose to be dry and it said it on their menu as well. I couldn't eat it because it was just way too sweet. Overall I had this place bookmarked for a while. Maybe I should give it another chance during dinner service.
Came here on Saturday for brunch and the restaurant was pretty quiet! But the food was amazing! I enjoyed the omurice with the fried chicken. It was flavorful and paired so well together! The cream pasta was also a nice addition to the meal to give different textures and flavors! The staff was super sweet and tentative and the food was made to order! The decor was also really cute inside with rustic vibes and they had these window seat nooks that were perfect for an intimate date!
Ordered kaarage, takoyaki, curry katsu, and curry shrimp tempura. Super delicious and good portions. Great dinner vibes and good attentive service.
SOBOKU is a nice little Japanese place which has gotten more and more popular every time I've passed by which isn't that surprising because the prices are pretty decent (especially for the area) and the food is overall good. If this place was on Yelp in Tokyo or something, it would be presumably listed as Western Style Japanese Food or Yōshoku/洋食 as they specialize in western inspired Japanese food such as curry, katsu, hambagu, and the like so I wouldn't exactly recommend ordering ramen here. The staff is friendly here and it's pretty casual inside. For drinks, I've only had Iced Green Tea here though the sake selection is a bit better than average such as Dasai Blue by the glass/carafe among others as well as a handful of cocktails. For appetizers, I liked the Salmon Carpaccio I had once with raw salmon and scallion with a yuzu-soy dressing for $13. The dressing had a subtle sour sweet flavor which complimented the nice rich slices of salmon with the salmon also being thicker than most other spots which is appreciated as it felt a bit more filling. I would recommend this if you want something that isn't too heavy as many of the other appetizers are fried and you're not looking for edamame or something. For mains, I liked the Kurobuta Katsu Karē or Berkshire Pork Loin Cutlet Curry for $18. The pork loin could have been a bit more tender but the slices of fried pork were large and it was well fried. The curry/kare has very good flavor with a good texture as well being more comparable to some curry spots which closed in Midtown. The portion size is also decent for the area as well. The poached egg I got as extra was fine though I wouldn't bother next time as it wasn't necessary and the dish came with some pickled veggies as usual. Less successful is the Soboro Don for $17 consisting of sautéed ground pork over rice with teriyaki sauce, Japanese mayo, scallions, sesame seeds and poached egg where I found the combination of sauces a bit too sweet and overpowered the flavors making it a tad too rich as well. The food here is good though it is not a place I would recommend from far away to travel. It definitely fills in a niche as the only other Japanese spot in the area are ramen spot which has higher prices than here (Kazarishi,) sushi places which range from fancy to non-fancy and a fancier albeit much better spot (Hibino) which makes a much crispier katsu though you're paying much more and it doesn't come with a curry so it is hard to say if that spot is worth it more. I would go back to try their unique sounding brunch menu and other things on the main menu such as the hambagu among others. If there was another katsu curry place in the area or if let's say this was in the East Village or something, they would like this niche but for now, it's solid especially for the area. Mid 3 bumped up for the price point.
I came here on a weekday evening and got seated by one of their windows. It's fairly spacious inside. Their menu is filled with illustrations and really cute. We started off with the Shishito Peppers and Crab Cream Korokke and I got the Kurobuta Katsu Teishoku. The peppers were good and came with a white pepper, though I wish they were a bit more bistered. The croquettes came with a tartar sauce which paired nicely with the filling. I felt like the fry on both the katsu and the croquettes were both super good, fried to perfection without being overly greasy. I enjoyed the dressing on the side salad. The katsu itself was well flavored and had sauce on the side. Overall, this was a very enjoyable meal and I would go back!
I've been wanting to try Soboku for a while and my expectations were met. I loved the welcoming atmosphere and Asian decor of the restaurant, I can definitely see why Soboku is considered cozy. The staff were wonderful and worked effortlessly. The Ebi Fry Katsudon was the best donburi I've ever eaten, it had a great savory flavor that almost made me want to order a second bowl! If you're ever in Carroll Gardens, give Soboku a visit.
This place is a gem for brunch! The egg in the omurice was creamy and soft. The curry was delectable and the fried chicken had a good crisp. The avocado crispy tacos were okay but they did put something special in the avocado that made it taste way better than normal mashed avocado. The torfuyu udon was creamy as described and had a nice truffle-y smell. There were plenty of bacon bits in it which was great but I wish there were more mushrooms. The inside is clean and cute. The service is attentive and food came out quick.
This place is an ok size, with a very causal and comfortable feel. They have good seating and the staff was very nice and efficient. I came with 2 gal pals and we started off with the crab coquette they enjoyed them. I do not like imagination crab so I didn't try it but they looked good. We also ordered the tuna tacos which were excellent!! I mean they were really good. I had the match iced tea it wasn't sweetened but still good. For my meal I ordered the pork loin katsu (Kurobuta Katsu Teishoku) the meat was a lil dry but overall the whole meal was tasty. I want to come back and try the burgers. read more
SOBOKU was phenomenal, I can't believe it's taken me this long to stop by! I had the shishito peppers to start, they were hot and crispy, without tasting overcooked. And the dish came with seasoning (lemon pepper?) on the side, which was a nice change from the usual lemon wedge (or no seasoning at all). The miso ramen was honestly out of this world. Very simple, so that every part of the dish stood out. The broth was so balanced, and the spicy chili oil was the perfect amount of heat. The pork was so tender and practically melted with each bite. The noodles were spot on, which was a welcome change from some of the less impressive ramen dishes I've had at other places. I have to go back to try their curry, it's apparently what they're known for. If it's anywhere near as good as the ramen, I'm sure it'll be fantastic. read more

Of all the Japanese places I've been to recently, SOBOKU is the one that most closely resembles actual Japan in terms of quality and price. I was craving classic Japanese food after watching a bunch of Youtube videos recently, and this place easily scratched that itch. We ordered: * Sobuku salad - 10/10: super nice and refreshing salad with a delicious dressing, perfect on a warm Brooklyn day * Salmon Carpaccio - 8/10: sauce was delicious, though I wish there were more pieces * Geso Karaage - 7/10: somewhat forgettable since it's just fried squid, but solid nonetheless * Katsudon Donburi - 10/10: delicious pork with egg on a bed of amazing rice that absorbed all the savory sauce * Toryufu Mazemen - 10/10: probably my favorite dish, all the components made this such a well rounded flavor Overall, this is one of my new favorite places as everything was great and at a solid price point. Very happy I decided to stop in and peek at the menu. This is a fantastic little Japanese restaurant with unique menu that includes items like a breaded shrimp fried burger. And yes, I had to try it. The Edi Katsu Burger comes with shredded cabbage and tartar style sauce with a side of tater tots. This was my first time trying a shrimp burger and I was very a happy with my choice. I would prefer fries or something more authentic over tots. The table service was quick and very helpful. The restaurant has dimmed lighting so be prepared to pull out your cell phones flashlight to read the menu if you are in the same boat as me and may require glasses but refuse to wear them. ;). Overall very happy with my dinner selection at this cozy spot in Brooklyn read more
Soboku is a super cute spot on Smith Street. The illustrated menu is adorable, and the food comes out looking even better than the pictures. They specialize in katsu and various donburi bowls. The feeling of the restaurant and the menu reminds me of small mom and pop restaurants in Japan. They also have a seasonal menu which looked amazing. - Salmon Carpaccio: salmon was melt in your mouth, I just wish that the portion was larger for the price. There are about 5 pieces - Crab Croquettes: super crispy on the outside and creamy on the inside. I thought the crab flavor was subtle but balanced. 5/5 would order this again! - Seasonal Dry Ramen: this was our favorite dish of the meal. Once mixed together, it created a meaty, umami and creamy sauce. 5/5 must try! - katsudon: I was the most excited for this, but the tonkatsu itself was pretty dry. The egg and rice was tasty though Next time I'm back I'm not sure that I would order anything with tonkatsu but I would definitely try their other donburi or specials! read more

Definitely so happy I found this! Perfect curry!!!!!!! Small quaint place. Service efficient and welcoming. Came on a Saturday night with 4 people, only had a 20 min wait. Sesame cucumber a must cold app, perfect palate cleanser. Takoyaki was moist and octopus tender. And the pork curry was amazing! The inside meat was soft and the outside crust was crusting !!! The curry taste on point. Will be coming back to try the soon to be added dessert menu. read more

I found a hidden gem in Brooklyn for yummy Japanese comfort food in Brooklyn. Everything from the salmon carpaccio and takoyaki to kurobuta katsu to Japanese hamburg curry was fresh and delicious. The spicy tuna tacos is a must order! The portions were generous and all the dishes were made with care. I also recommend the hikari cocktail if you want a refreshing drink. read more

Came here for dinner with some friends. Always wanted to come here to try their Katsu. Got the Kurobuta Katsu Don and it was amazing. Definitely my favorite here. My second favorite was the Kurobuta Katsu Cure. The ramen was also really good. Overall, most of their items are so good and this has become one of my favorite tonkatsu restaurant. The service was great and the staffs were super accommodating. It's a small restaurant so might have a tiny bit of wait time but it's so worth it! read more
We weren't the only ones who saw a viral instagram reel about SOBOKU! I heard the table next to us also talking about it They don't have an online reservation system yet, but I called a few days ahead and easily got a res for 6 people. Their menu has super cute drawings of the food, and there are a ton of fried food options - from apps to mains. The restaurant is quite small, so I expect it to get busier For drinks, I highly recommend their peach soda and Lucky Cat beer if you want something on the lighter side! We shared a few apps and each got our own main - Soboku salad: a refreshing salad in between all the fried dishes. This had a yummy wasabi mayo dressing - Spicy tuna taco: comes with 4 pieces, and VERY crispy wonton - Geso karaage: fried squid legs, like calamari - Kibinago fry: Small fried herring fishies. I don't think you can go wrong with any of the appetizers! - Aji fry: comes with 3 pieces of horse mackerel that were pretty decent in size! the set also has a bowl of rice, salad, and miso soup. The fish was flaky and I liked the tar tar like sauce it came with - Kurobuta katsu kare: pork katsu with curry sauce on rice Everything is quite simple and to the point with no fancy sauces or spices or flavors. One of the best Japanese spots in brooklyn. I've came here a few times before. I usually get seated pretty quickly by the staff. My favorite appetizer is the crab cream croquette. The crab cream is super tasty and creamy. I've tried the salmon don and katsu curry. My favorite is the salmon don. The raw salmon with the spicy mayo is delicious. I love the texture and taste of the raw salmon. The raw salmon was well seasoned. Overall, an great Japanese spot in Brooklyn. read more
I saw this place on my Tiktok and I knew that my best friend and I had to come here and try. The place itself is pretty small - but we waited for about 20 minutes for a seat and the staff was super friendly and attentive. Honestly, all the food items looked and smelled so good - we did not know what to choose. They pretty much have curry, hamburgers, teishoku and donburi. We decided to get: -Sweet Potato Tempura: So good, very crispy on the outside and with the salt, it was so good! -Kurobuta Katsu Curry: The curry sauce was delicious. The Katsu was alright - very filling but the flavors of the katsu, curry sauce and the rice was just so good. If you are a fan of curry - would recommend this. -Hambugu burger: All the burgers come with tater tots which was a nice touch. My friend got the burger and she said it was very good as well. I had a piece of the meat and can confirm - the meat is very tender and good. Overall - great food and so filling (the portion sizes are on the larger size but nothing too crazy). I saw this place on Instagram, which prompted our Tuesday night dinner here. There was no way to make a reservation but they seemed more busy with take out orders than dine in. The vibe was super casual as well. The menu was extensive with mainly rice dishes. There were many katsudon and curry orders. This is not a ramen place given very few ramen options on the menu. I got the breaded shrimp katsudon. The rice was really good. The sauce was simple. I think they poured the sauce over the breaded shrimp because the shrimp was reallllly soggy. Overall, 3 for the soggy fried shrimp, but I'm bumping it to a 4 because of the attentive service. She was really nice and constantly re filled our water. read more
Wow! What a wonderful and authentic Japanese meal in Brooklyn. SOBOKU is delicious and I enjoyed every single dish I had here. The Karaage and Crab Cream Korroke is so good. It's fried perfectly and not too oily. The ramen is good, but this isn't a ramen spot, so it wouldn't be my first pick necessarily. Still good if you are in the mood for noodles though. The Sake Teriyaki was fresh and delicious. The quality of fish for salmon was nice and I like that they kept the skin on. The set came with rice and miso soup. Service here is great! The waitress was very kind and it's small inside, but can seat parties of 2-4 I would say. read more

Came by on a Saturday night for dinner around 8pm. There were a few tables available, but the place is small overall. Therefore, I can see it getting busy at peak hours. My friend and I opted to get the hambagu curry and kurobuta katsu curry to share. Overall, the curry was okay. I didn't think too much of it. It wasn't good, nor was it amazing. The rice was on the drier side, but the curry made up for it. The tonkatsu fell apart. The batter didn't really stay on the meat. Not the most tender I've had either. Could've been seasoned better as well. The hambagu was good. The meat fell apart and was seasoned very well. Each dish was less than $20, and they were quite filling. For the price, the food isn't bad, but it's not the best katsu/curry I've had. read more
This place had been on my "to do" list in Brooklyn for a while and gosh was it worth it. I went with two other friends and we got the table near the window, which was super cozy. The whole restaurant is pretty small, so not great for large groups, but perfect for 2-4 people at a time. The waitstaff and chefs are all super wonderful and you can see everything going on thats to the half open kitchen vibes. And every single dish that we had was fantastic. We even ordered seconds of a couple items because they were so good. We treated everything kind of family style since we wanted to try so much of the menu and it was the perfect amount of food. Cannot say how amazing this place is overall. Even down to the flatware and dish ware details, I loved it here. It's definitely going to be a staple for me on my Brooklyn adventures. Was craving curry last night and decided to order Soboku. Reviews were good, especially for the curry. Unfortunately food was not good =\ the rice was gelatinous. Almost like a mochi. The curry was okay. They don't give you much and the taste was below average. Chicken was dry. I'd not been felling well and curry is one of my comfort meals, but definitely no comfort here. My husband ordered the oyakodon (chicken and egg over rice) and said it wasn't great. Overall can't recommend this spot. read more
I was super excited to check out this new Japanese spot in Brooklyn after all the good reviews! Arrived right before 5pm but noticed the restaurant got packed by 5:30pm. Service was pretty quick but there was only one waitress handling all the tables. We ordered the crab croquette which was extremely creamy. The breading was also light and came with cabbage and tartar sauce. The tartar sauce was quite good! For the main entree we got the kurobuta katsu curry and a chicken kaarage teishoku set. I really enjoyed the kaarage and it went well with the spicy mayo sauce. Usually kaarage can be a hit or miss especially if the batter is too heavy but the batter was just right. The pork katsu was also not bad but a little dry in the center. The batter was light and not too thick but something was not quite hitting the spot for me. The curry sauce was light and flavorful. Overall: it was a nice ambiance, food is good but the katsu was missing a little something. Still it's definitely worth a visit! I would try the ramens next time, maybe the curry ramen. read more

This cute little spot in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn has all your favorite Japanese comfort foods. Did I mention everything is $20 or less too? You can get teishoku, katsu curry, donburi, and even Japanese style burgers all for $20 or less! Food: + ハンバーグ (hambagu burger) + Salmon carpaccio + カキ (fried oysters) + 黒畑カツ (Berkshire pork loin cutlet) + クロック (crab meat croquette) Drinks: +ひかり (hikari cocktail) +ありむら (arimura cocktail) One of the reasons I love Japanese food is the visuals. And my goodness what a visual it is! The presentation is so aesthetic from the cocktails to the katsu teishoku and the hambagu burger. There aren't a lot of tables, which are also on the smaller side but it's a perfect spot for a family dinner or date night! Really enjoyed my dining experience here and felt I was being transported back to Japan! I feel like it's difficult to find affordable, high quality and authentic Japanese food but SOBOKU hits every one of these categories. All the appetizers we ordered were under $10 and the serving sizing was also great! Our entrees were all under $20. Out of everything we tried I enjoyed everything but my favorites were the shishito peppers which are mild in spice, miso ramen, and salmon don! I also recommend the yuzu soda and lychee soda both of which are so refreshing. The atmosphere is super cozy as well and the service was great! We came on a Tuesday evening and it got a bit busy towards 8pm. There's a fair amount of indoor seatings. If you come earlier it should be less busy! Overall, great Japanese restaurant to dine in and I would come back again to try other menu items! read more

Stop looking for the best plate of Katsu in Manhattan, cause it's here! Us living in Brooklyn have been so blessed with Soboku, with excellent service and deliciously made Katsu in an open concept kitchen. The space is comfortable and cozy, the appetizers were hot and fresh! My girlfriend and I both got the pork katsu sets, complete with crispy tender katsu, white rice, miso soup, and a side salad with dressing. We will absolutely come back here again! read more

Both were delicious. The salmon don was fresh and light while the shrimp kare was hearty and warm. The music wasn't too loud and allowed for a perfect environment for a date. Got here around 9pm for two and was seated in 10 minutes. Spicy tuna tacos and spicy maguro don were super fresh and the chicken katsu was crunchy and delicious, would be back just for the spicy tuna tacos. Solid dinner choice in the neighborhood. read more
This is one of the best Japanese izakaya I have ever been to in Brooklyn, especially their pork curry and dashi egg dons! I've never been a big fan of the egg katsu don, but Soboku does it so well! Albeit the katsu aren't as crispy because of the egg mixture, but it soaks up all the sweet dashi egg flavors! The kurobuta curry pork is also so incredibly tender and juicy, which is hard to accomplish because so many curry restaurants overcook their pork katsu and make it so dry. The ebi burger was interesting, but definitely on the sweeter side which was just okay to me. The shishito peppers were very tasty with its accompanying yuzu salt, but I ate quite a few pieces that were so spicy, so be warned! Overall, we had a really good time at Soboku and the waitresses were all so nice and kind! The ambiance is comfortable with adequate spacing between tables and is on the dimmer side. Overdosed on fried food, but no regrets! Was in the area and needed a walk in spot for dinner and landed on Soboku. The specialty here seems to be fried food so come ready. For two people we split 3 apps and an entree and it was a lot of food. Only app not pictured was the carpaccio which I wouldn't recommend personally. The fish was an odd texture and almost seemed smoked? Regardless, everything else was great. Geso tempura, kani croquettes, and katsu curry. I particularly loved the kani croquettes. They were very authentic in breading and also crab/cream puree inside. The entrees are rather large in size so if you go the route of doing an entree per person I don't think too many apps are necessary. read more

Food was sooo good!! I would definitely go back again, if it wasn't for the poor service. There was only one girl serving the whole place and she seemed to be a woman in her mid 20s. She barely checked on the table. (Understandable but it seemed as if she was dodging our table. She was constantly checking up on the other tables and avoided our table just because our party was younger than the other tables.) Left us waiting at the entrance because she thought since they didn't take cash we would leave. When we tipped her the amount we thought she deserved, she snickered with the chefs behind the counter because i guess she thought we couldn't to tip her an appropriate amount. The ambiance was very comforting i will add that. read more

This small Japanese restaurant specializes in katsus and is a great addition to Cobble Hill. There are only a few tables but the atmosphere is inviting and casual, making it perfect for a quick dinner outside. Service is excellent; our server was very nice and welcoming, filling our waters, and taking care of us well. The Tori Katsu Curry was the best dish out of everything we ordered. The chicken was soft and perfectly deep fried on the outside; the panko batter was not as thick as your typical katsus, but the crispiness was there all the way. The rice was perfectly sweet and the curry was delicious. The Takoyaki, 5 deep fried squid balls, was a close second. There was a generous serving of the mayo, Takoyaki sauce, and fish flakes on top. It was served piping hot and disappeared from our table within seconds. The Gyudon, though also flavorful, was the least favorite. The meat to rice ratio was good and so was the sweet rice, but the beef slices with onions were quite dry and taste overcooked. Normally this dish has the softest fatty beef that would melt in your mouth and is cooked in mirin and soy sauce that would give it the natural sweetness. Although the sauce was missing from the dish, the poached egg, once mixed in, helped revive the dish. The menu has lots of different rice dishes, burgers, and even a few ramens. This my third time I had the pleasure of dining at Soboku last night, and it was truly a delightful experience. From the moment we walked in, we were greeted warmly by the staff and seated promptly. The atmosphere was inviting and cozy, making it the perfect setting for a relaxed meal. The service was attentive without being overbearing, and our server was knowledgeable about the menu and made excellent recommendations. Now, onto the food - it was phenomenal. I started with the Spicy Tuna Taco , Sweet potato tempura, Takoyaki .which was bursting with fresh flavors and set the tone for the rest of the meal. For my main course, I ordered the Saba Teriyaki set and Tori Katsu Curry . it was simply exquisite. The presentation was beautiful, and the taste was even better. Every bite was a harmonious blend of textures and flavors. Overall, I can't recommend Soboku highly enough. The combination of exceptional service, inviting ambiance, and incredible dishes makes it a standout dining destination. I'll definitely be returning soon! read more
