I give this restaurant a 5 star for their food and the server that helped us. So i'm pretty sure you would as why did I put a one star, I will tell you why. Yesterday around 5:30pm my family and me visited this restaurant specifically it was 16 of us which five where children. Everything was amazing until.... A white couple was seated behind us after around 5 mins a server came to help them. When that happen my 4 year old brother did a loud scream, and the white couple felt irritated by that so they asked to be moved to another table. Which does not bother me at all because I understand they couldn't order , what got me really mad was the fact that their server who has A TATTOO ON HER BACK (LEFT SIDE) WITH BLACK HAIR AND A LOW BUN DECIDED TO MAKE FACES TOWARDS OUR SIDE. When she moved the white couple to the other side she pointed at us while she was talking to her co-workers. So this situation could of ended there when the couple was moved to the other table. But no this server then continues to pass by our table making faces, grilling at us and complaining to her other co-workers about our table just because my brother was crying. And NEVER DID SHE COME UP TO OUR TABLE TO SAY "is it possible you can please quiet down your baby some of my customer are complaining if thats okay " NEVER. Mind you my 4-year old brother has Autism, which explains the reason he throw these tantrums. So I did not appreciate the way we were treated by this specific waiter or server who was not even our server, very unprofessional and rude. My family WILL NOT becoming here again, We spend more than $400 dollars here to be treated like this. If the presence of kids bother your employee then you should make this restaurant a No kids allowed. Or be careful who you guys hire. This really boiled my blood when I seen that happening. She told about 5 co-worker about our table and kept pointing and making face gestures. She very ignorant . On the other hand I do want to say thank you and felt very welcomed by the waiter who served us food she was very sweet and caring and understanding. Reason why we gave her a good tip. Though Smokey Bones is located in close proximity to Texas Roadhouse, it is a great alternative. While much of the menu offerings are similar, it is less-steaky and more BBQ-y. Inside, it also has a different take; it is less of a honky-tonk atmosphere and more lodge-like. Large-screen TV's surround the bar area, and provide ample entertainment (especially last night, during March madness). Service has been good during my three visits; servers are extremely friendly (although sometimes try too hard, imho), knowledgable of the menu, and keep the drinks refilled. Last night's choice, KC Ribs and pulled pork combo, was pretty good. Not amazing, but pretty good. Price was $14.99 for the combo and $2.50 for the iced tea. Four different styles of BBQ are available at the table for your preference. This is a good comfort food establishment, and personally, it has won the battle of the local BBQ. Proof is in the wait; expect 30 minutes on a given Friday or Saturday night. On the downside, I can't help but be repulsed by some the offerings, in terms of nutrition. Sure, my ribs and pork and fries won't win any favors with my arteries, but a burger offered consisted of 3-1/3 lb patties, cheese, fried onion rings, bacon? Another offered 1/3 lb patty with pulled pork, cheese and bacon (see another yelper's photo). If this doesn't make the menu of the nearby McDonalds look like a weight-watcher's healthy alternative, I don't know what does. Sure, salads are on the menu also; but the fact that Americans are actually doing this to themselves is a sad commentary. Maybe if it was offered along with a treadmill to eat it on, perhaps! It's one of the only places in Berks County to get BBQ... But here is my most recent experience: My wife and I started out with the "new" Buffalo Chicken Dip. It's pretty heavy and gross... Think chopped up chicken fingers, topped with Velveeta and hot sauce and then nuked till a glue-like consistency. Served with some tortilla chips. Definitely not worth the close to $10 they are asking for it. For dinner I had the St. Louis ribs and 1/4 BBQ chicken combo with the cinnamon apples and steamed broccoli. Unfortunately, our dinners arrived literally 2 minutes after the appetizer... I understand that the BBQ is already cooked earlier in the day and they are basically serving it, but what's the point of ordering an appetizer if the meal is served immediately? Of course, maybe they know how bad the Buffalo Chicken Dip was and wanted to get us to move on as quickly as possible? Another problem: while my dinner tasted good, it wasn't served hot. More like a decent "warm". But certainly not steaming... As I said, I understand that the BBQ is already cooked, but their holding temperatures certainly need some adjustment. Firstly, what's the deal with still making customers wait 10-15 minutes when there are empty tables? The food really was nothing spectacular, so you're getting average to below-average BBQ for prices that are actually rather high. I thought the smoked sausage was decent, but I have to give up on ordering pulled pork from this restaurant chain. Like every other Smokey Bones I've tried so far, it came out dry and flavorless. Sure, one could dress it up with the unlabeled and unidentified sauces at the table but should one have to? On the plus side, I thought the mashed potatoes had good gravy but that's a minor part of the meal. The way they handled the check was the final straw. I wanted to use this weekend's 30%-off coupon. The server took it and after a rather long time, she came back and told me that they had no idea how to put in the coupon and the best they could do was 25% off. Isn't that the lamest thing? All 3 of us are from CA so we drove around and stumbled on this place. We get there and turns out that there are others there waiting for a table. Looks like we now need a table for 15. They sat us in the bar. A few people there had been there before and some were locals and raved about the place. I thought "must be good.." They had 2 servers helping us. Both were good and attentive especially since there were a lot of us and most of whom have huge positions in the corporation. Right away, we ordered some appetizers. Fried pickle - I tried one, it was ok... I have definitely had better! Smoked chicken wings - everyone seem to like it, I thought I've had better at BWW! Garlic and Parmesan chicken wings - good but, nothing special. Pretzel sticks and some sort of cheese dipping sauce - I'm a sauce girl and a cheese girl but, the pretzel was better than the sauce! Everyone ordered drinks... That's what VPs do after hours apparently. Get trashed! Looks like there was a good beer selection but, they ordered budlight. Classy! My first drink was a Bloody Mary. It was good but, I had a better one in Vegas a few weeks prior. Time to order dinner... I got the create a combo. I picked brisket which is only available after 4pm, and 1/8 of BBQ chicken. My sides were coleslaw and upgraded to the Mac and Cheese since one of the locals suggested it. Brisket, I ate it... Lol but, nothing fantastic. The chicken... Wasn't a fan at all. Tore it apart but didn't eat it. Coleslaw was alright. The Mac and cheese was quite tasty! Oh and they had a side of garlic bread. Took a bite but I think it tasted like the frozen Texas toast you get in the freezer aisle. Everyone gets their food. One got totally wrong sides. Like not even close and another person didn't even get his food! The servers were nice and took care of it right away. I might've given it a 3 because I was in good company. The food is mediocre. Hard to describe how bad this place is. I have put in 4 complaints on their web site and crickets. One week and still no response. Did a curb side pickup Monday April 1. Order placed at 4:02 and they responded 4:30 pickup park in curb pickup spot and we entered vehicle description. Wife arrived at 4:26. At 4:45 no one had come out yet so she called them. Response was we don't know your here we don't have cameras. Ya ok not what your order response said to do plus you don't have eye balls to see cars out your window. Then food doesn't come out till 5:00 anyway so one would conclude it wasn't even done yet as it took another 15 minutes then girl that brought food had a snotty attitude and no apology for being 30 minutes late. I am now more upset at not even getting a response from their customer service. Resteraunt are run just like their corporate offices. Oh and the food pretty much stunk. Bag of donuts only get 5 donuts for $9.00 Mac and cheese was like a side order not what they show you in picture. Avoid this place. Used to be good but not anymore. Ive been here twice and both times they've had the air conditioning on too strong. We asked the waiter to turn it down though, and he did so nicely. The food is pretty good. I got their baby back ribs both times, but tried them in different sauces. Their cornbread appetizer is really good and comes with some kind of sweet butter that makes it even better! They have tons of flat panel TVs all around the restaurant showing a few different channels. I think they're usually showing at least one sports game and one news channel. They have a nice bar area too, but I've only been here for lunch. read more

I haven't been to a Smokey Bones in years. I remember it being better. To me, it just felt like a typical Chili's type chain in a nice inside setting. I got fish and chips and it was so, SO greasy. I had a layer of grease in my mouth for the next few hours, grease on my hands. Ick. The sauce bottles at the table were I cleaned, menu was sticky, and there were opened straws/ straw papers on the table when we were sat. Meh. First timer; recently visited on a Sat after noon for later lunch. We will return. We were in the area and decided to try something new. Service was great. Not too busy or crowded and didnt wait long for tables or food. Friendly and helpful. The food was cooked perfectly and everything tasted amazing. My husband and I ordered off the create your own combo so we could try different things. The portions were great. Very disappointed in our visit last night. Our waitress was great, I will say that, but the experience with our food, far surpassed now nice she was. We ordered very specifically for our daughter, as she cannot have cheese due to an allergy. It was taken correctly for her to get a plain burger, it was brought to our table with cheese. I caught an eye roll from the girl who delivered our food (not our waitress) I explained my daughter simply cannot have cheese, it was explained to us that the kitchen just made it wrong. Ok great, remade. It came out then a bit later but was completely overdone. Ok whatever, my daughter is also 7, and can be picky. The worst part was my food. I ordered the Buffalo chicken sandwich, I felt like it wasn't as hot as it could have been (temperature, not taste) but at this point was hungry and not making a big deal. 3 or 4 bites in I realized my chicken sandwich was RAW in the middle. I don't know how anyone in the kitchen thought that piece could be done. I was offered a new one but my appetite was gone. I also was told we could have a free dessert, but again, we couldn't have anything from the menu because of the milk allergy. Thankfully, they comped both mine and my daughters meal and gave us a coupon. I have no desire. I could have been extremely ill, and thankfully was not. I know Covid has made things rough for the restaurant business, but completely not cooking chicken is unacceptable, no matter the time. Always a wait. Their wait times and issues stem back to management issues. Waited recently close to 1 hr for a table. Upon further investigation, the tables were being held up by a drinking older nasty woman who was talking to a man at the bar for over 10 minutes, while her sweet husband sat alone at those tables. Their tab was paid and their food was boxed. But yet we waited. So buy the lady a drink and move her off the table, so that you can use those tables to serve a large party. Be progressive. Be proactive. We left after the manager did not show that he appreciated our frustration and disdain about the terrible way that this establishment handled this. He stood up for this crude human. She held up 12 SEATS that would pay $$$$!! I approached her husband and explained we were tired, hungry and the kids were faded, and he was just as frustrated waiting for this lady. Her and whomever she was talking to was shocked, but with 4 hungry and bored kids under the age of 7, sometimes you have to do things to take care of them. Overall wonderful experience! My friend and I met here for lunch on a Tuesday around noon. The hostess was the sweetest lady ever! The gentleman that hosts is also a charmer. Our server was Dottie who did an EXCELLENT job. She was very attentive and didn't hover over us, which is always nice when you plan on being there for a bit. She was very helpful is recommending different things and did a great job spreading our appetizer and meal apart. We started with a berry sangria (very good) and a Peach Margarita. The sangria was the better of the two but still great. We then had fried pickles which we both love. The pickle chips are better in my opinion and they were cooked perfectly. It's also a rather decent sized appetizer. Next we had the stacked potato with brisket and a house salad. Both very good. Let me start by saying before Covid, we ate at, or did takeout at this Smokey Bones at least once a week, and it was always good! Tonight was a disaster. From placing my order, where every question that I asked, the person had to ask me to hold, while she asked someone else. Why would you have someone on the phones, who does not know your menu, or can't answer simple questions? When ordering a burger, a normal question would be "how would you like it cooked"...nope, didn't ask, until I said "do you need to know how I would like it cooked?" When I went to pick up my meal, I stood there for several minutes, while a hostess stood next to me folding napkins. Maybe it would be nice, if you were greeted and told someone will be with you soon, rather than ignoring you! I have to say that this was probably the worst meal that I have ever gotten here. My husband got a burger. It was like a puck (I asked for medium well). It was cold. It was supposed to have coleslaw on it, it didn't. The fries were totally soggy and cold. And to top his meal off, I ordered a side of baked beans for $3+ and they were cold like they just came out of the refrigerator! My meal was no better! I ordered the Cuban. The pork was totally dried out. The roll was disgusting, soggy and stale. Any my fries as well, were cold and soggy. Now I understand restaurants are struggling, but if you want repeat customers, you need to put out a decent product. Very disappointed, and will not be going back in the near future. read more

It's location is good, they have decent menu all around and adequate seating,friendly servers all the right ingredients yet can't seem to bring it all together. Without the food and drink items made to order properly this place falls short of a 5 star restaurant. Two different times I ordered a hamburger meal made Med Well. First time..when bitten in it the blood ran out and soaked up the bun of course. I ended up taking it home to finish cooking. Second time... I ordered the same way after talking with my server first, the order came out and still pretty much the same results. Now, this time the cook came out and spoke to me, offered to take it back and do some magic ? I took my meal home again. Afraid to order Well done could be burnt and dried out on a dried out bun and I want flavor and fresh buns for $$ I waited awhile to go back to this place.. this time ordered a $12 beef brisket sand was cook very good had flavor but only 2 thin slices of beef on a long roll? Was loaded with cheese had peppers n onions,lots of filler which I took off ...like a bad steak sand. I'm not understanding why they don't have a brisket sand like the pork sand on a bun that is fresh not dry to fall apart as your eating. They have all those good sauces of flavor you can use so why not put out a good brisket sandwich also. The beans are fabulous and should be served in larger portions in case your sandwich is not good. Sides are pricey, should be served in good size portions. The last time we were here it was agonizing, this time it was self induced torture. I have a broken leg and was using the opportunity as a little get away from being stuck indoors for the last 3 weeks. The wings came out in a timely manner but what happened to the rest of the meal? Mac and cheese and a fish and chips basket? It took about 40 minutes for the server to come back and " take our order again" what? Didn't she write it down the first time? She said the kitchen lost the order, ok so why didn't she resubmit it from her notes. The experience did not achieve what it was supposed to for me. My broken leg was cramped, I wanted to leave, took it to go, was disappointed. Overall it was so bad the server comped the meal and we didn't even ask. Have been here several times with family. Really enjoyed it in the first few years it was open. The past three times I have been there, I had horrible experiences. The first incident, They brought out the completely wrong burger, bringing me out the right one long after my family had finished their meals. The second time, I had ordered a bowl, which they completely forgot the chicken and popcorn on. When I politely told my server, she gave me attitude, argued with me, and then when I showed her on the menu what I ordered, she brought me out cold chicken fingers and popcorn and told me to put it on myself. The most recent visit, I ordered a burger again, and they brought me the wrong burger, again. They now have these computer monitor things where you can call your server, so I did, and after about fifteen minutes of sitting there watching the rest of my table eat, the owner came over and asked why I didn't like the inncorrect burger that I was brought (I had not eaten it) and that I should try it because it was good for me, when it contained an ingredient that I am allergic to. We had our second bad experience here tonight. The food and service are sub-par, compared to the prices. Not what I expected. Atmosphere is nice, they have outdoor seating, but the heat lamps are not in service...not good. Our first time there: - my steak was well done; I ordered it medium-medium rare. Stressed that I wanted it pink in the middle, but it was cooked all the way through. Got an apology, but no offer to make a new steak. I was told there was a "new person" working the grill. - They were out of onion rings, and that was one of the things we wanted on the appetizer trio. We got fried pickles instead, which were VERY salty. - The lettuce in the salad was yucky and brown. In addition to not being cooked properly, the steak had marinade that likely had a lot of MSG in it. I had a tortuous headache that night. I have a feeling that most of their food is pre-packaged and pre-marinated, arrives frozen and thrown on a grill. The marinade tastes very generic and VERY salty, like most of their food. The nachos were soggy and bland, the loaded fries were really bad. Salty and soggy. We told the server this when she asked how we liked everything. We were offered a $5.00 coupon off our "NEXT visit." Nothing more. And $5.00 is pocket change when you consider the prices here! Still, we found ourselves here again. Our second visit was even worse! - My son ordered a small Caesar side salad. Most of the lettuce was disgusting! Inedible. The lettuce was brownish black and smelled like it was actively fermenting. I wouldn't feed that lettuce to a rabbit or any animal for that matter. We sent it back, got another salad that was a little better but still had some rotten pieces. -I ordered their stew as an appetizer. There were some questionable pieces of meat in there. A tubular piece of cartilage and another cartilaginous piece of pork. The cartilage was chewy and I gagged on it, and had to exchange the stew for potato soup. I don't recommend any menu items that are "soups" or "stews," where you can't inspect the meat...very, very risky! - They were "out of" chicken fingers and all fried chicken cutlets. ALL of them. What restaurant runs out of these things? It's a staple! Last time it was onion rings, this time chicken.... - I ordered the pulled chicken salad and had the same rotten lettuce as my son (see pictures). The server (who was really nice) insisted on replacing the salad. I asked him if he could have the kitchen make me grilled chicken (I ordered grilled rather than pulled) without the MSG-laden marinade. We waited over 20 minutes for the salad and it never came out. The manager comes out and says "so you have a problem with the chicken too?" I said no, and I explained that since the waiter INSISTED on making me a new salad (minus the fermenting lettuce leaves) that I asked for chicken without marinade. She got really pissy with me and then told me their chicken COMES PRE-MARINATED so they cannot accommodate my request (ah! So I have confirmation that their food is not "fresh" but pre-packaged! They admitted it!) OK - I'll eat the MSG, I was starving. At this point we are told that the salads were removed from the bill, as well as the small stew. The server came out and refilled our drinks and asked if we still wanted the salad - we said of course...why would we still be sitting there? I was starving and we had waited SO long. We waited another 15 minutes for my new salad. At this point, we have been sitting here an hour and a half total and all I've eaten was about 2 ounces of potato soup, 2 celery sticks and a French fry off my child's plate. And I'm 8 months pregnant with blood sugar issues. AND I was starving when we GOT there! It gets better...now, the manager comes back out and asks if there has been a miscommunication? OMG THEY NEVER MADE MY SALAD! And SHE was angry with US! This is the most ass-backward restaurant I've ever been to. At least this time they took the meals we didn't eat or weren't happy with off the bill (and the one I NEVER GOT!). Last time we were there we were offered basically nothing when our meals were cooked incorrectly. We got the bill and left, and we ran to Chick Fil A to get me sandwich...which was much cheaper, and the quality of food MUCH better, LOL! I gave this place one star for our server. Two of us had already eaten but wanted to accompany our friend for a late dinner, planning on having a drink or perhaps dessert while he ate. We walked in and sat at the bar, occupied by no more than 6-8 other people at the time. Two bartenders on duty - older blonde lady who was visibly intoxicated, we watched her tap herself a beer and continue to socialize with customers from behind the bar (debatable whether or not she was on the clock) and a younger, stocky guy who had no notable traits other than being terribly sweaty. This guy approached us after we'd been sitting about ten minutes. We ordered beer, coffee, water, and asked for a dessert menu. He came back with our beverages and took our order: A steak dinner with sides to go, an appetizer and "hot" bag of donuts while we waited for take out to be ready. He wasted no time putting our food through, however we got no coffee cream or sugar and my water had no ice, which I really didn't mind. I guess I didn't notice at first that he was intentionally ignoring us because we clearly weren't there to get drunk. A food runner brings out my friend's appetizer what seemed like minutes later. Fresh from the fryer, sizzling hot and actually smelled damn delicious. Despite the awful atmosphere, the overall experience was still ok at this point.. It's now 12:45, our empty appetizer plate sits next to us at the bar along with my empty water glass and my friends very full, very black coffee. We've received no further service. I heard the kitchen "ding" when the order for our hot bag of donuts came up. Then I watched them sit there for 10 more minutes. I ask Bartender for more water, and about the donuts. Maybe even an ETA on the takeout? I was growing impatient. Not even kidding you, this guy walks into the kitchen, chats with coworkers and comes back out minutes later having completely forgotten his mission to check on our food. Hello! you have an open kitchen! He resumes helping customers on the other side of the bar, avoiding eye contact with us. Finally, food runner brings donuts out in a literally grease soaked bag. I send them back immediately since I just watched them get cold. I also send the coffee along with her, and grab a water bottle out of my purse because at this point i'm sitting at the bar dehydrated.. drunk blonde bartender lady sees me sipping from a nestle pure water bottle and actually says to me " I see your secret stash, not so innocent over there huh!?" Could she not have filled my glass instead??? At this point I'm obviously upset so when the supervisor on duty (FINALLY) brings out our take out order, I took the chance to mention what happened with the bag of donuts and he says he can't take it off the bill but he can bring me a dessert for free. Not that I wanted to stick around any longer, but there was a $8 piece of chocolate cake I had my eye on so I gave it a try. He brought it out promptly, we asked for our checks and received them momentarily. If you are still reading, this finally brings me to the worst part of the evening, the credit card FRAUD that smokey bones committed. We split checks two ways, I paid only for the coffee and the bag of donuts that I never consumed. My total was $15.00. I swiped my debit card for $15.00, and kept my receipt. Now, because I've been a server for a long time, I know the bad Karma that bartenders will at you when you sit at the bar and drink water without leaving a good tip. I also caused a ruckus about my donuts, so I felt even more obligated to tip this guy generously despite his total lack of manners. I totaled my charge at $15.00 and left a $5 bill on the bar, in addition to whatever my companion tipped on his meal.... somehow, days later, the charge on my account appears at $21.32....how does that happen?? Having been a server, I know exactly how those things happen. and my reaction is just shock..why? why would you pocket my $5 bill and then tip yourself $6.32 after providing us little to no service and not even mixing up one drink??? Yelpers of Berks, I implore you to go somewhere else. Don't get ripped off by these people who have no standards of service and food quality. They have a similar stack of chocolate cake at Buca di peppo so you won't even miss out. Sorry for the ramble, thanks for your time!! read more

Hey if you're on the road for a chain not bad if you are craving Que.. happen to know Darden sent a team out in competition circuit for a year or so before opening up the chain. They do the right things just very hard to convert top Bbq into a chain concept successfully while maintaining quality and product.. my personal opinion this site does a decent job and probably better than a Dave's or a Dickey's . read more

Horrible. Zero stars. Bad food and service. Not clean. How the hell can you screw up a burger? Only place open to eat after 1000 in godforsaken Reading. Next time, I'll just get roadkill or drive to Landcaster instead of subjecting myself to this kind of crap place. read more

I believe that Smokey Bones has slipped over the past two years. There has been significant reduction in portion size and I do not think that the food is any way as good as it was four or five years ago. We used to like eating at Smoky Bones, and but now we seldom will go there, and even with a coupon for $10 off and a drive of less than a mile. That's too bad, I really liked their ribs a few years ago. read more

I have to agree with other fellow debt yelpers....this place needs some help! It's disappointing too as Smokey Bones used to be one of our local chain regular "go-to's". I had been there a few weeks ago for lunch and got the chopped chicken salad - fabulous (that day) - so I made my husband return the other night after craving this salad. It was a Monday evening and relatively slow (business wise) but service was SUPER slow too! We had a friendly (yet a little strange) waitress, our food came out before our appetizer nachos (which are often the star of the show at SB!!) and the salad sucked. Greens were wilted and there was a chicken bone in my salad. :-( All in all a disappointing experience and as a result we've taken Smokey Bones off our "go-to" list for a while. read more

My kids who live in the area recommended this place for linner (lunch/dinner). The staff was very friendly, the server was very attentive. The food was very very good. I had the baby back ribs and pulled pork and both were wonderful. The corn side was very tasty. We were able to watch most of the NFC playoff game with all the televisions in the place, but they weren't a distraction. Definitely will go back when I'm back in the area. read more
