If you are in the Reading Pennsylvania area, this is a must stop location…read more Does it have curb appeal? Not particularly - short of a rather subdued Chicken Supreme sign, you may not know what lies inside the Penn Avenue storefront. When you walk through the door, you begin to think you may have walked into a time machine - it looks very much like it could have from the 1960s. There are a handful of counter seats - maybe 10 in all - at this cozy location. Ordering take out is your best option if you have more than two people in your group. However, if you are looking for the best fried chicken in a 50 mile radius - do stop in. It is a mildly seasoned flour dredge chicken, simple but done to perfection. Always crispy on the outside, and ridiculously juicy on the inside. However, chicken perfection does take 15-20 mintes, so calling ahead is a good idea. If you are not a fried chicken person (which I have difficulty comprehending) their fish and chips, cheesteaks, and hand cut fries are all fantastic. If you are in the area, it is worth the stop.

I've lived in this area my entire life. I grew up on eating pretty "OK" cheesesteaks and survived…read morejust fine. I also have driven to Philly for a "real" cheesesteak and have had a number of great sandwiches locally in the last few years. I've heard a lot of good stuff about JD's and decided to check it out. If you're a local foodie, you know there are probably 3 sandwich joints that everyone swears by, and JD's is one of them, so we were very excited to give this a whirl. I had a quick trip one night after work, and we were getting home around 630, so we called in an order to JDs. There was a big mix up with our order (not knocking anyone for that, stuff happens) and our order was prepared again in record time and got home. We ordered 2 different cheesesteaks and some garlic parm fries. So let me get this out of the way, the cheesesteaks were good. Nothing at all wrong with them, but they were very much a "Berks County" cheesesteak... I don't know how else to describe it, but if you grew up here in the 90s, this tasted exactly like every cheesesteak you've had at a pizza shop or sandwich shop in the past. There is NOTHING wrong with that. I thought it was good, but it was just a good sandwich, nothing to write home about. The fries, were cold before we got home , and while you get A LOT of fries, they were just fine once we reheated them in the air fryer. They tasted good, they had decent seasoning, but again nothing special. The staff was nice, cannot complain about service, fixed the mistake quickly and got us on our way. If you want just a good cheesesteak, and good fries, this is your place... its just a very good sandwich shop with good food. Nothing wrong with that, if this was my neighborhood shop I would have no problem eating here regularly, and maybe I ordered the wrong style of sandwich and I need to try again (I will).

This is the only V&S shop I go to even though this one is 15-20 minutes away and there is another one on Lancaster Ave 5 min from my house. The one in Sinking Spring.. well, don't get me started... I haven't been there in 6 years. I can't believe these places share the name V&S because they vary widely. But this place in Temple is terrific! If you're reading this and you're from out of town, let it be known that here in Berks County we make cheese steaks WITH sauce, by default. If you don't like that, then order without.
