    Screpesis!

First time I tried this place. The italian on a hard roll with hot peppers was amazing! I highly recommend it!

    Italian Sub
    Mike F.

Feeling a bit torn about this place. That's because I order one thing and one thing only from Screpesi's - their Italian sub. Yes, I've tried other items. But they all pale in comparison, and that's putting it lightly. Their take on the Italian sub is the ONLY reason to come back. Let's take a brief look at the rest of the menu. It's concise to say the least. Certainly nothing wrong with a small menu. Small menus usually indicate a strong focus on what few items a restaurant offers. With fewer items on the menu, it's less stress on the staff. They can probably bang out everything on the menu from muscle memory after just a few weeks on the job. It equates to higher volume and faster service. The only thing is, those recipes have to be good to start with. What is up with the cheese steaks? Description on their website says "top quality chipped ribeye eye steak." Cool, but how about some seasoning? Oh, and their version comes with sauce by default. Personally, I'm fine with it. But damn, the sauce was as bland as the meat. It almost seemed like the sauce was just for coloring. It added absolutely no flavor. To make matters worse, they say onions are cooked with the steak no matter what. So you can't order a steak without onions. Again, to me, not a big deal since I like onions. But I couldn't even taste them. Just by the eye test, I could see maybe one or two tiny slices of onions. I was actually excited to have onions included, but they were nearly invisible (both visually and, uh, flavorfully?). They have some random stuff, too, like pizza. But it has the weirdest description I've ever read. It's pizza, but "carnival style." Then they have three different price points for each type (i.e. Cheese $5/$7/$9). I guess that would indicate small/medium/large? But that's pretty damn cheap for a large. Also in the description, it says "frozen shell." So are these frozen pizzas you pick up and take home and heat up in your own oven? It's so bizarre. That would mean they are just sitting on a mountain of frozen pizzas. And again, seriously, what the hell is carnival style?! Was really debating on 3 or 4 stars. Rounding down to 3 because Screpesi's is so one dimensional. Not just that they focus on sandwiches, but of all the sandwiches they sell, only one is worth buying. Everything else about them is outdated. An uninformative, defunct website with inaccurate pricing and refusal to partner with any delivery service is just icing on the cake.

    Large ham hoagie

Delicious! We got an Italian large hoagie and a ham large hoagie. They were great sizes for the price and extremely fresh. I think this was the best ham I have ever had. The shop is clean and cute, a pure mom and pop shop through and through. The staff were friendly and welcoming.

Very good Italian Hoagie. Meat was cut a little thicker than I like, but the hard roll was great and the charm of this small shop was neat.

A very good Italian on a chewy hard roll brings me back to them from time to time despite the parking being a bit of a pain.

Very pricey , for the little bit of meat they put on their sandwiches . If you order extra tomatoes it's four for a dollar . Stay away

Large pie w/ my version of Hawaiian (pepperoni-pineapple). Cheesy, good amt of toppings, even distribution, floppy crust, sweet sauce. Chicken Bacon Ranch Stuffed pizza, counter-style. They do more than just drizzle Ranch on top that melts off in the end. They spread it across top crust & send you home w/ a side. Chicken is chicken-steak, not actual chicken, but value is so good you have to make some concessions. Cubed tomato and sprinkles of crumbled bacon. Stromboli has heavier bottom, light airy top crust, filled w/ meat & cheese- quality of both not as good as some places but again, a tasty value. Ham is cubed not sliced (can spill out & be a little troublesome). Place is awkward to get to if coming from Douglasville direction. Specials like Lg pizza & Lg Stromboli for $35 is daily & can't be beat. Highly recommend for those cheat days!

I had a slight issue with my order so I called and they were willing to accommodate me saying come back in anytime to get a replacement ; about a week and a half later I was in the Exeter area and I went and got a replacement for the menu item upon providing proof. I will definitely have my boyfriend pick up from there again on his way to my house! They had quite a few things on the counter that looked delicious!

I just can't say no to V&S…read more Although I've never actually set foot in V&S (at this location or the two others dotted across Reading), I find myself absolutely addicted to their subs. About once a month, a co-worker of mine says she's going to V&S and asks me if I want anything. I do indeed. And what I want is an Italian sub. They are so baller here. It's almost like a White House Subs level of fanaticism. So basically whenever I go down to AC, I make a point to stop at White House to pick up a giant sub before even checking into the hotel room. Then on the way out of AC after a weekend of debauchery, I stop by White House again and buy TWO more subs to take home. Whenever I order at V&S, I get subs by the pair. It's never just one. It's at minimum two, but I could definitely see myself ordering three at a time. That could last me the next day or two. A whole sub makes a great dinner. A half sub makes a great late night snack. The other half is a perfect lunch the next day. So what makes a great sub? Well, tons of high quality meat for one. Like, it needs to be piled high. Two or three layers just doesn't cut it. Then fresh cold ingredients, like tomatoes, lettuce, and onion. Next is high quality olive oil that pairs well with an exceptional red wine vinegar. Perhaps one of the most important components is a robust roll. And last but not least, a crushed red pepper relish that adds an extra bite to each, well.. bite. V&S has all of the above. In contrast, the hot dogs here are straight ass. I know, I know. Who gets hot dogs? Well, someone who relishes in the joys and heart complications of transfats for one. Mike from the Jersey Shore was known as "The Situation." You can call me "The Saturation." The hot dogs here are limp and shriveled. I'd wager 7-Eleven has higher quality dogs. On the plus side, if you ask for extra toppings - especially if you request them on the side - V&S is super generous. I asked for onions and they asked if I wanted them on the side. I said sure, so they included a big bag of fresh sliced onions. This was enough for the hot dogs and provided an additional cache of onions that I could sauté up with some chicken and veggies to make a completely separate meal. As I finish this review, I have a major hankering for one of their Italian subs. BRB, gonna place another order.

Even with Reading being a hotbed for local sub shops, many locals (including a handful of self-proclaimed hoagie aficionado friends of mine) swear by Primo's and believe that, despite being a chain with over 115 locations, their hoagies stand up with the best of them. After trying my first ever hoagie from Primo's, I can now say I'm a believer. Generous portions of zesty Italian meats are piled high on a seeded roll that elevates the whole kit and caboodle. The only component lacking was the lettuce in my opinion, which I found sparse and soggy. On the other hand, the tomatoes and onions were perfectly portioned and appeared to be drizzled with some sort of Italian seasoning/olive oil blend that really cranked things up to an 11. What maybe impressed me most was the execution by the staff on such a frantic day. The first 100 people to arrive received a free hoagie. Many more than that showed up. Incredibly, the pace was quick and efficient. Maybe we were lucky, but it only took about 5 minutes from the time we ordered to when our names were called. Everyone was pitching in, including the two Miss Philadelphia's who helped distribute hoagies to eager patrons. Just a really fantastic debut for what should be a sandwich staple in Wyomissing for years to come.
