I'm don't live local and always on the lookout for great food recommendations. A co-worker suggested this place, so I decided to give it a try. I arrived at the small shop and was greeted by two friendly ladies. The menu board was simple, and I opted for the Italian hoagie. She explained the difference between hard and soft rolls, and I decided to go with the large one (which I'm glad I did). The hoagie was incredibly delicious! The fresh meats and cheeses were of the highest quality, and there was no skimping on ingredients. I ate half of in the car and the rest when I got home. This small shop far surpassed any chain restaurant I've ever been to, and it's definitely one of the best food experiences I've had. I'm completely satisfied and will definitely make this a weekly treat. read more

Amazing Italian Hoagie, amazing staff, stopped in for the first time and was given recommendations and was hooked up with the best sandwich Ive had by far. read more

Super friendly service!!!! Bread is about as bad as Subway!!!! Was too doughy. Ingredients are good. Very cheap. Sure wanted a lot better bread. Gave a 4 star for atmosphere and attitude of servers. I'd give it a on star for bread but liked the service. read more

Feeling a bit torn about this place. That's because I order one thing and one thing only from Screpesi's - their Italian sub. Yes, I've tried other items. But they all pale in comparison, and that's putting it lightly. Their take on the Italian sub is the ONLY reason to come back. Let's take a brief look at the rest of the menu. It's concise to say the least. Certainly nothing wrong with a small menu. Small menus usually indicate a strong focus on what few items a restaurant offers. With fewer items on the menu, it's less stress on the staff. They can probably bang out everything on the menu from muscle memory after just a few weeks on the job. It equates to higher volume and faster service. The only thing is, those recipes have to be good to start with. What is up with the cheese steaks? Description on their website says "top quality chipped ribeye eye steak." Cool, but how about some seasoning? Oh, and their version comes with sauce by default. Personally, I'm fine with it. But damn, the sauce was as bland as the meat. It almost seemed like the sauce was just for coloring. It added absolutely no flavor. To make matters worse, they say onions are cooked with the steak no matter what. So you can't order a steak without onions. Again, to me, not a big deal since I like onions. But I couldn't even taste them. Just by the eye test, I could see maybe one or two tiny slices of onions. I was actually excited to have onions included, but they were nearly invisible (both visually and, uh, flavorfully?). They have some random stuff, too, like pizza. But it has the weirdest description I've ever read. It's pizza, but "carnival style." Then they have three different price points for each type (i.e. Cheese $5/$7/$9). I guess that would indicate small/medium/large? But that's pretty damn cheap for a large. Also in the description, it says "frozen shell." So are these frozen pizzas you pick up and take home and heat up in your own oven? It's so bizarre. That would mean they are just sitting on a mountain of frozen pizzas. And again, seriously, what the hell is carnival style?! Was really debating on 3 or 4 stars. Rounding down to 3 because Screpesi's is so one dimensional. Not just that they focus on sandwiches, but of all the sandwiches they sell, only one is worth buying. Everything else about them is outdated. An uninformative, defunct website with inaccurate pricing and refusal to partner with any delivery service is just icing on the cake. read more

Italian sandwich with Goods chips from Screpesis is a must! I have been eating here for years.

Usually a 5 star ham on roll, but not today- Sunday perhaps? Little lettuce, onions. No butter on roll, hardly any crushed peppers...had to add mayo. . Been coming here 50 years read more

A very good Italian on a chewy hard roll brings me back to them from time to time despite the parking being a bit of a pain.

I've eaten hear many times and the only thing I change up is whether I get a hard or soft roll, both are great! Best Italian sub ever!!!!! They make it hard to get one anywhere else. The ingredients are extremely fresh and top quality. Maybe some day I will try something else but for now I'm good. read more

Delicious! We got an Italian large hoagie and a ham large hoagie. They were great sizes for the price and extremely fresh. I think this was the best ham I have ever had. The shop is clean and cute, a pure mom and pop shop through and through. The staff were friendly and welcoming. read more

Main Location on Lancaster Ave is decent, Their cold sandwiches are good, but the hot ones, not so much. I've gotten stale rolls here, but it only happened once. They're a bit pricey, but they do pack their sandiches with a generous amount of fillings. But DO NOT, under any circumstances get a pizza form the Rte 625 location. It was comically bad. I am talking that Chef Boyardee in the box from the supermarket terrible. Most mom-and-pop pizza places around here have good pizza, but not them. They call it "carnival" style or something, which is fitting because whoever made it must have been a clown. The cheese and sauce were very bland. read more

they have the best meats and cheeses and tomatoes and onions, and everything that goes inside the roll is awesome. It's a real shame that you can never get a fresh roll there. I had an awesome Italian sandwich, but fell apart as it does pretty much every time I get a sandwich there read more

Perhaps I'm being sacrilegious but I wasn't at all impressed with the meatball sandwich. Nothing at all wrong, just wasn't impressed with the meatballs. However, the ham and cheese sandwich was very good. The rolls were good. They had to be because they're Conshohocken rolls. Service was fine. I may be spoiled because my ex mother-in-law is Italian and when she made meatballs it was an absolute event not to be missed. read more

Great sandwiches. Love their bread. Fresh high quality ingredients. Consistent quality and fast customer service. Love this place.

Excellent local sandwich shop. We tried a cheesesteak, italian, ham and turkey sandwich and they all were so good! This place is a must when in Reading! read more

Updated May 25, 2020 @7:57PM Decided to stop by one of the best sandwich stops with excitement coming from NYC. However had to leave this unfortunate review due to the three women working this night. I've always had amazing customer experience since the first day I stepped in here. Today it went from being rude to not making a sandwich the way I asked for it. I asked for hot peppers on half (it was on the whole thing; tried to correct it but instead should've got a new bread), then the lettuce , was on one half instead of it being payed out correctly. Lastly, the employee who refused to give me her name (said she wasn't allowed to; however if it would've been a great experience; I'm sure she would have.) slapped provolone cheese on both sandwiches when I clearly didn't ask for it; even if I did (ask what cheese I would like how the other other employees do). Not sure if this rule was made up but I asked her for a 2 foot long since I live so far but she said that policy is 24 hours. I would've been happy if she responded properly; instead she said you need to get 4 separate sandwiches. I left it at that. Her attitude and performance was unacceptable and her co workers accompanied instead of correcting her. This is not how you treat any customer especially in a business full of people. It leaves a horrible image. I only write this review because I operate a hospitality business. I love this place and I will gladly remove this once I speak to management because they refuse to give me any info. My first Comment 2 Years Ago Posted Below. Hands down the best in berks county! I went to the one over by the Turkey Hill on 625. They shared the space with a dog groomer at the time, i think. My Italian hoagie was pretty good. The sho was super clean and very tidy but I couldn't get past the stench of the sewer or something rotten when I'd walked in and out of the building itself. I'm guessing they rent the pace. I hope their landlord fixed/fixes whatever was wrong (it's an old building) so it doesn't put more folks off. I haven't really been back since my first order. Mostly because I forget it's there. read more

First time there, Italian with hard roll wasnt bad, havnt had anything else, location is a bit difficult to get too, would return though for work lunch. read more

Let me preface this by saying that I'm not a fan of most of what they serve. Their italian sandwiches taste like something you'd pick up at Turkey Hill, and their cheesesteaks are watery and bland. But I'm not here to knock their shortcomings. I'm here to discuss the nectar of the Gods, their ham on roll. I was a strict "mayo on turkey, mustard on ham" person. This sandwich changed my mind. The mayo, the gobs of ham, the mayo, the onions, the mayo, the ATV roll. 2 stars for their other sandwiches. 5 stars for the ham on roll. Rounding up to 4 stars just based on this Berks County staple. read more

Just like my post on Google. I want people to know how things were and how they are today. Screpsies has been around for a long time. I graduated high school in 1978. I loved their sandwiches. Now I have a family. I wanted to introduce my son to a meatball sandwich from there. What a mistake. He asked for a toasted meatball Parm sandwich TOASTED. Maybe the young people who are trying to make the sandwiches just don't really care what the customer wants. Did you ever try to eat a cold meatball Parm sandwich? It's not good. For $12 you would think they would at least give you what you ask for... The original Screpsies... The people who put their heart and soul into that business are rolling around in their graves... Rest their souls read more

Very pricey , for the little bit of meat they put on their sandwiches . If you order extra tomatoes it's four for a dollar . Stay away

What happen to the Ham sandwiches. You change the ham. I got one and throw it out. You had the best ham sandwiches in town.

I heard so many great things about their sandwiches and wow, disappointing. I got the tuna and it was terrible. The tuna was drenched in mayo, it was soggy, and I just threw it out. Not sure if I got them on a bad day. My brother raves about this place and I was hoping I was gonna love it but I didn't at all. read more

Overall pretty good place and good food I usually get an Italian sandwich. Wish the ingredients were a little fresher tasting though.

This is the best Reading hoagies. They are NOT Philly hoagies. Same as cheesesteaks, if you don't understand there is a difference between what you get in Philly versus Reading, I can't help you. If you want Philly style, get on 422 and head east. These are READING sandwiches, and they are damn good. read more

I've been enjoying "Italian" sandwiches from this flagship store since the 50's. Their ham on roll can't be beat. First, all the rolls are from ATV bakery. Second, the sandwich has a lot of meat! With lettuce, tomato and gobs of thin sliced sweet onions. Something rather different: they dress it with Hellman's mayo. And it works! You can add provolone cheese on request. What a work of art! Folks come from all over the county for this treat. I'm not knocking their Italian sub's, which are tasty too (never tried their hot sub's). Simply put, probably the best ham on roll in the known universe. Don't pay any attention to naysayers and whiners reviews. This one is worth the trip (tip: take along a small container of their peppers in oil!). read more

This place is a joke. To call what they serve hoagies is an insult to a real Italian Hoagie you'd get in Philly. Where's the spicy capicola? Where's the sharp provolone? Where's the roasted Italian peppers? Where's the crusty seeded Italian roll? Berks County wouldn't know an authentic Italian hoagie if it slapped them in the face. So lame. read more

Ordered sandwiches today (4 ham and cheese and a steak sandwich). Got home, no steak sandwich! Called up and talked to the young guy that works there explained it to him and said I'll be over for my sandwich. Walk in, get waited on, told the guy I was there for the steak sandwich they forgot. It wasn't even made! I am at a friends house four blocks away and they couldn't even make it in that short amount of time. So, I get my sandwich, go back where I was at, open my sandwich and it was ice cold!! Almost like this was done for spite because I complained. Normally I have no issues with them, this time was a complete failure! Total disregard for customer service. On top of this I got questioned by the guy about if I checked the bag! Uhm, I think I know that! read more

This place ROCKS!!! Absolute gem!!! Classic Italian subs and salads are PERFECT, and this is spoken by a Jersey boy, where Italian subs are made like nowhere else. Well, until Screpesi's! Seriously, this place should be on a TV show. No exaggeration. Loads of crisp fresh lettuce, juicy white onions, red ripe tomatoes, all FINELY sliced, and deli meats that are perfect. But don't forget the hot pepper spread. This perfects it! Wait, you won't forget anything because the ladies here are so good at what they do they ask you! This will definitely be a regular stop when I'm in Reading. Hours: M-W 10-9 Th-Sat 10-10 Sun 10-5 read more

Sandwich is decent. The reviews below are clearly the owner because the sandwich is average. Best hoagie is Shillington Farmers Market Richard Stricklers stand. Chapmans makes a better hoagie than them too. read more

I see many reviews saying their hoagies are nothing like the ones in Philly....well GO TO PHILLY for your hoagies then because when here, you're eating in READING. I know....mind blown!?! Right? With that said, I will agree that the italian and cheesesteak, although tasty, are not THE best I've had, however they are still pretty good BUT lemme tell you... their ham & cheese and tuna are THE BEST in Reading, hands down and I'm willing to arm wrestle those who don't agree LOL but seriously my mouths watering just thinking about them!! Anyways...there are a few down sides to this place, main one is the location! I wish they would move somewhere else besides Lancaster Ave., because...well if you're from Reading, you don't have to ask. Parking does suck and lately the young girls they have working in there are a hott mess!! They are, most of the time, rude! They rush you through your order and more than half the time, get it wrong. I wish the older, more seasoned ladies were back because they cared and took your order correctly. If they would make these minors changes, I would probably eat here at least once a week. Happy Yelping!! read more

Awsome subs! Well worth the extra cash. Only down side is --- they could stand to wear gloves or wash after handling money. Still, the subs truly rock. read more

Screpesi's makes a great sandwich, no question. In addition to the Ham or Italian hoagies that everyone mentions in their review, the tuna salad hoagies are really good too. Keep in mind that they really are take-out only, they don't have a table and chairs for you to sit at. read more

After Chubby's closed and Santo's vanished, the last of the great Reading sandwich shops rests with Screpesi's. Living in Arizona no one has a clue what an Italian sandwich is suppose to be. Love, love, love. Ham on a roll. The Italian. That's all I'm saying! Nothing here is a disappointment.

Great bread and sandwiches, try the local chips and sodas, also good!

I do enjoy the Italian hoagies. Closest to real Philadelphia Italian hoagie in the Reading area.

Greatest sandwiches around. Employees are very polite and cheerful.

Visiting from NY. I had the Italian. Just the right amount of super tasty meat. Great seasonings too on the hard roll. Great fresh lettuce, tomatoes & banana peppers. The woman was very nice behind the counter too. Don't forget the "Good's" chips. They were great too. Just what I needed. read more
