The Dog House is a Reading staple that everyone knows, and the locals here cherish this little mom and pop type of a shop. I mean its hot dogs, and burgers people. Basically it's a slice of Americana that can never go wrong. I was impressed with the menu with the different variations one could enjoy a hot dog. They do have burgers , but this day was a dog type of day. The staff was very friendly, and helpful when it came down to getting the right order. If I'm ever back in the Reading area I'd definitely stop in again and tackle some more dogs off their impressive menu. read more

Hot dogs! What else is there to say? Small grilled snappy little bites of deliciousness with a crazy menu full of different combos. They have old school hamburgers and FRESH cut fries as well. Street parking and old school cafeteria feel from the few tables inside with friendly folks behind the counter ready to take your order. They need their menu printed, nothing more that I hate then to have to read a menu board above the counter guys head while i stare at the multitude of choices. I stopped in for a quick bit while in the area. I was hungry and needed to run. I got the Coney Island dog. I liked the steam bun. I didn't get a lot of flavor from the dog overall but I was hungry and don't take my time. So that might be my fault. However I really enjoyed the fresh cut fries. Just like from the fair or boardwalk. Really nice. I'm not in the area too often but I will probably stop in. Was a bit pricy though. 1 dog, small fries, and a bottle of iced tea $9. I was driving past heading to the farmers market and was sold on the look alone. Very retro, looks like it's been apart of the community for a while so I had to try. The inside doesn't look like much so I just knew the hot dog was about to be amazing. Didn't get as much as I usually do because I wasn't that hungry. With so many options I just decided to play it safe & go with the Coney Dog with cheese. Got my son a plain dog, no bun or toppings (he's super simple.) Also got a small side off fries. Fries: boardwalk & delicious. Hand cut, as I saw the potatoes cut and sitting in a bucket of water waiting to be cooked. Best way to make them. Coney Dog with cheese: hot dog is small and reminded me of a 7-11 hot dog flavor. Chili and cheese was nothing to write home about. A bit salty. I was truly disappointed. You would def need at least 2 hot dogs to get full. I will try this place again, only to try their Coney Burger I saw others ordering, and to try a sausage dog if they have one. The hot dogs need to be better quality because right now they are a thumbs down. Also loved the hometown feel of the place and the customer service. They also have a cool loyalty program. read more

The ultimate hot dog stand. About two weeks ago I was daydreaming about the upcoming new year, and my mind eventually wandered to pork and sauerkraut. For anyone not familiar, that's the traditional new year's day dish in Pennsylvania (much to the chagrin of children across the state). Anyways, my daydreams of sauerkraut eventually led to daydreams of hot dogs (clearly I was having a productive day at work). My absolute favorite way to "enjoy" sauerkraut is on hot dogs. I started Googling local hot dog joints, and voila, The Dog House materialized. It also helps that I'm a fan of hot dogs in general. They are like, the ultimate vessel for food. Try to think of them as the tofu of meats. They just seem to infuse so sublimely with whatever toppings you decide to heap on. My order consisted of three varieties: the DeVine (topped with bacon, cheese, chili, onion, ranch and fresh jalapenos), the Cubano (topped with ham, Swiss cheese, spicy mustard and pickles), and finally the Reuben (topped with sauerkraut, Swiss Cheese and Thousand Island dressing). All told, there are close to two dozen different hot dog selections on the menu. I have nothing to complain about the fresh, yummy toppings. The hot dogs themselves... well, it was lacking that nice "snap" that you always want on the first bite, but other than that slight quibble, I can't fault the place for much. read more

They have a wide variety of hot dog combinations, but the size/quality of the food is pretty basic. Burger was on par with a standard McD's cheeseburger size-wise but 2x-3x the price. Standard hot dog as well -- if i'm paying $3.50-5.00 for a hot dog, I expect more than a 10/lb dog, dwarfed by the bun. It's fine, just a disappointment after the hype. read more

Ate here and it was the worst hotdogs I ever had! I was told by someone that this was a place they went when they were a child and they had fond memories of eating there...back then...but when I was takin' there.... it left a lot to be desired for me...as an adult who enjoys even average quality when done right and getting what you pay for. We were served wet spongy hotdog rolls soaked in sour kraut juice! I ordered a Cuban hotdog also and it advertised ham on it, but what they gave me, that was called ham, was like a wee paper thin crispy piece of salty whatever they were...mystery meat the size of my thumb!? In most respects, Dog House is a fast food restaurant run as a mom-and-pop operation. The hotdogs are tasty and there are many variations offered on their menu board. The best hotdogs I've ever had? No, not by a long shot. The worst hotdogs I've ever had? No, not by a long shot. Service is friendly and fast. Seating inside the restaurant is limited, including three tables and several high-top stools along a back-of-the-wall counter. Something has changed. The Coney Island sauce isn't nearly as good as it used to be. My father actually thought it was under new ownership. I suggest going back to the way it used to be. Very tasty. 3 stars b/c it's a wee bit pricey for a hot dog with some topping, ($2.95)and it was a regular size dog, not a larger one normally served at a place like this. This used to be one of my favorite places to eat a quick lunch. I would eat here almost weekly. Unfortunately, quality seems to be dropping ever so slightly as time passes. Every year or so I go back to see if they have improved. Unfortunately, the only change is that their prices keep going up. While they did add quite a few non-standard offerings "Southwest Dog," "Gyro Dog," etc, that isn't what I personally want from my coney island dog house. I want prompt service and fresh coney dogs/burgers at a reasonable price. While this used to be the case (5 stars for sure), it no longer seems to be so. I still like the food but the slow service, slight decline in quality and rising prices make this a once per year place instead of a once per week place. read more
