Deducted 1 star because NC style barbecue sauce is just god awful and it's all they have here. Even the "red barbecue sauce" I tried to order tasted like straight vinegar. The exit where this Smithfield's is located is one of the last good stops in the drive from Raleigh to Wilmington and unlike the other places around, Smithfield's is one of the few sit-down places. With a large restaurant with plenty of long tables, it's great for a group. You order at the front and you listen to your number to pick up your food and sit. Prices are reasonable ($8-10 for most plates/platters) but the plates are humongous and I wish there were slightly smaller options for people who can't finish 3 huge chicken tenders and three sides. Food was cooked to order but still kind of seemed like they were popping frozen chicken into a fryer and there was a lot of extra fat in the tenders. Fries and hushpuppies were the standouts, with the hushpuppies light & fluffy inside. Baked beans were forgettable but at least not vinegar based like everything else. Sweet tea was basically pure sugar and needed to be cut with lots of unsweetened tea to be palatable. Brunswick stew that my friend ordered was the most reasonably portioned item but really just seemed like all the meats this place cooks thrown together in an unappetizing-looking tomato-based stew. I would not come here again by choice, but it did fit the need of having something passable to eat from a clean restaurant right off the exit when we needed it. read more

This place made me feel like I was home. And I'm not even from NC. My grandma didn't make our food, but it was made with so much love I would've thought she did. This was my first time at a Smithfield's and we picked it because it was right off of Rte 40 and a better option than the fast food nearby. I had zero expectations, and honestly, I was blown away by the customer service if the entire staff. From the woman who took our order, friendly and helpful, to the staff who kept checking on us and keeping our ice tea refilled, even though we're were drinking unsweetened -gasp- and they had to make a separate trip for us. At one point we spilled an ice tea and a team of staff descended on our table and cleaned it with minutes. The food is good, fast and very reasonably priced. The Brunswick stew is a star here, evidenced by the number of people ordering it. And the hush puppies, typically I could care less, but they were delicious. At this exit, your choice is McDonalds, Subway or Smithfield's. In my mind, it's a no brainer. We had the 4 piece chicken and the bbq platter. The chicken was juicy on the inside, crispy on the outside and not too much salt. The bbq needs sauce and they will give you some if you ask. The coleslaw is sweet and the fries were yummy. The customer service is always great and just when I needed it, they came and asked me if I needed a refill. Thank you. Is it the best bbq? Being from the Midwest I was expecting something with a little flavor from my fried chicken strips. They were blah. My platter came with stew which was a nice touch. The hush puppies were ok. The thing that stands out to me was the staff. They checked on us several times to make sure we were doing fine. You typically don't see that at diners like this. read more

Ate here on a recent road trip. I HATE to give fast food 4 stars. It will kill me in the end. But... They're fast. Food was HOT and tasty. They were courteous and polite! So often you go into a fast food place and the people are like "Night of the Living Dead" and I hate that. Who wants to get food from such complacent people?? (I always think in such places, they are complacent about other things). But not Smithfields... Smithfields is always very courteous and polite. The food is excellent for what you pay. Smithfield's BBQ has never impressed me all that much. I find the meat to be stringy and wet, but somehow a little dry tasting when I chew on it. It goes OK on a sandwich with some of their sweet cole slaw, but if you get a BBQ plate you might be disappointed. Also, I think their hushpuppies are some of the worst in the business. I find them to be overly firm and mealy. They could stand to spend a little less time in the frier and maybe a few recipe tweaks. Now that I've got the bad stuff out of the way, Smithfield's is generally a good crowd pleaser at various stops on the way to NC beaches. They have some darn good fried chicken, and for the price, you might even like their seafood platters. Also, they serve those yummy shoestring fries, and they've really nailed it with getting them cooked just right every time. And that sweet tea... man it is good. So while Smithfield's has its flaws, it certainly is going to be a better option for you than many of the fast food offerings you would encounter on your trips to the beach. After living in Raleigh for 5 years and hearing about the wonderful SCNB I decided to check it out on the way back from the beach. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich combo, which came with fries and a drink. The pulled pork was delicious and served Eastern-NC style. The bun was fresh, the serving size plentiful and pulled pork delicious. The fries needed some salt, but were great! Definitely recommend for a quick stop on a road trip. If the restrooms were a bit cleaner I'd give it 5 stars, but overall a great quick serve dining experience. read more

The great - the BBQ chicken. They batter and fry the chicken and then coat generously (pour) a honey/ hot pepper sauce over the top. The chicken was outstanding! The good - the pork BBQ. Above average Eastern style. The vinegar based activator has a generous amount of crushed red pepper which makes it better than most. The average - cole slaw which is more like KFC than vingard based BBQ slaw and the southern style potato salad were good but not great. Overall - place was incredibly clean, well lit, fast service...Many of the best "Q" joints are holes in the wall and this is a whole 'nother level. Go get the BBQ chicken with slaw and a sweet tea and by all means get a jar of that sause to GO! read more

My family visited the Newton Grove, NC location on Saturday, April 10, 2021. We were passing through while returning from vacation. We have never been to this location but was SO impressed with the staff. Everyone was very helpful, polite and courteous. My elderly mother was with us and she was treated like royalty. I can not say enough good things about the whole staff and the food was excellent. It's nice to know good eating places still exist! read more

I happened to stop by 07/30/18 at around 9pm Drama, as soon as I walked in the door all I could hear was a argument that was coming from behind the counter ... apparently two staff members were having a argument That escalated to the point that one of their parents showed up and her sister holding a baby... more cursing,slamming hands on the counter... some very choices words that I probably can't write on here!! again more yelling and threats one girl clocked out and waited with her mom in the car for back up to arrive ... also the staff just seamed to find it funny and laugh it off like it was a every day thing ... not sure how it happened but a McDonald's employee just happened to walk back behind the counter to talk to the other girl involved and then later walks out from behind like it was no big deal ... when I left the "fine establishment" momma, sister and the employee and lets not forget the baby were still waiting in the car for backup to arrive .... based on that not sure how family friendly this place may be! read more

We stopped at this Smithfields off of 40 on the way to the Coast. It was clean, comfortable, and service was very good. We each had the Pork Sandwich Combo (with slaw), fries and a drink and it really hit the spot and got us back on the road feeling fulfilled and ready for the rest of the trip. As someone else mentioned they have old Hollywood pics on the walls, lots of Ava Gardner and Elvis in our section. The music was 50's classics. This is a really nice Smithfields location. read more

This place is a good stop off the highway during a road trip. You order at the front area and then sit down and wait for food to be served to you. The turnaround time is pretty quick. They have quiet a few people working at a given time, so I witnessed a front bus person go around and ask people for drink refills, and then the manager check in with everyone and do the same thing, pretty well. They keep the dining area much cleaner than some of the restaurants in a similar category. The price is reasonable for the wood quality and portion. read more
