Super convenient location right off of 40 with some terrific food options. Been to this franchise before so decided to swing off of route to grave 2 pints of pulled pork to take home since we don't have any of these franchises at home (unfortunately). Very clean and well kept restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating. They even have additional picnics tables out back as well. Lots of BBQ options. They also have chicken fingers and tons of sides. They have pork rinds that are great as well. They even sell some merchandise to take home with you. Don't leave without some pulled pork! It's a vinegar based sauce and oh so delicious. Worth the stop!!! Super friendly employees and just a terrific NC local restaurant offering fabulous food with lots of options.

Excellent flavors, quick service, clean restaurant. Quality fast food. I got the barbecue plate, with Eastern NC style bbq, potato salad and beans. The beans and potato salad have amazing flavor and the barbecue comes a bit bland but moist, so if you like a lot of flavor I suggest adding vinegar. The bbq sandwich with slaw is delicious. And their fries are tasty too. Great for a quick stopover to eat true southern soul food.

Brunswick Stew and the BBQ are exzilerattigly good. I love the sweet tea also. Charger electric cars in the back although on their own one because I like raw horsepower

The classic: bbq sandwich, hushpuppies, baked beans, iced tea.

There was a very real risk of wasting an entire day. Thankfully, Skylight Inn delivered in a big way. First, this is the kind of place that attracts everyone: police officers, construction workers, families, businesspeople in suits, and that's just on a weekday. That's always a good sign and something I love to see. Their whole hog Eastern North Carolina barbecue was absolutely worth the effort. It was incredibly flavorful and packed with texture. The crispy skin is expertly mixed throughout the meat, alongside moist pork and just enough rendered fat to create a perfect balance. Every bite had something different going on. The sweet tea was excellent, the slaw was solid, and the picnic-style potato salad hit the spot. The cornbread, however, deserves special mention. Unlike what most people think of as cornbread today, Skylight's version is made with only stone-ground cornmeal, water, salt, and pork drippings. It's dense, chewy, and rustic. No wheat flour, no sugar, and no fluffy crumb. It may not be everyone's favorite, but it's a fascinating piece of barbecue history, and I respect that they're still making it the traditional way. I came. I saw. I ate. Then I bought three pounds to go and grabbed a T-shirt on my way out. That's about as strong an endorsement as I can give. PS.....Walking the grounds is fun as well.

There is no seating inside the building, but take your meal and walk around to the back. Here you will find a truly unique picnic seating. The price point here is superb. $26 bought two trays-- chopped pork with sides of coleslaw and mac 'n cheese, a rib plate (4 bones) with sides of baked and green beans, a sausage link, and two cans of diet Pepsi. The mac 'n cheese, which is an in-house recipe, is one of the ten best that we have so far found in BBQ circles nationwide (346 stops in 35 states) . The coleslaw is neutral, making it ideal to cleanse the palate as you move between different meats. We also liked the beans, especially the green beans. The sausage link had good snap and flavor. and the in-house vinegar sauce really brought the pork to life, but our meat of choice here would be the ribs. Beautifully prepared, with a clean bite and a tasty rub and light sauce, they are simply delicious. So, we strongly recommend that you make the effort to get here ... but go early! We were eighth in line at the opening, and worried that we might miss out because, as is always the case in the universe of small town American BBQ, when it's sold out, they are done for the day.

Southern Smoke BBQ provided free food to the first 500 people, so I can imagine how much work they did to prepare the food. The pulled pork was the best North Carolina barbecue I have had so far. It was so moist, flavorful, and well-shredded. It had enough flavor that did not require additional sauce. However, their bottled vinegar sauce did add an extra oopmh, that I would still recommend adding. Their mac and cheese made with penne pasta was also very good. The pasta was a little overcooked to my taste but I still enjoyed it. It was creamy and packed with cheese. I could eat this every day. The coleslaw was good too, more on the sweeter side, but not overly sweet. Will need to stop by the restaurant next time I'm in the area!

They no longer serve either one. Perhaps after COVID and the very high prices of beef these days but the menu is really pared down. But here are the highlights. The baby back ribs are meaty and moist with a little too much dry rub (for my tastes). There is a wide selection of sauces, but they are not typical, dinner, and lighter than most BBQ and smokehouse restaurants. The flavors were not canned; they were very authentic and clearly original. The owner seems to work hard to be authentically original. The other thing we tried was the burger because the waitress nearly drooled telling us about it, and several people asked us if we were going to try the burger. The burger was not some skinny smash burger or a pretender frozen patty. This was a handmade, very thick, and juicy burger with tons of flavor. My wife ordered the burger, and it was huge (see my pictures). I might try the burger the next time. We also had Mac and cheese (good, not amazing), collard greens (amazing, not just good), and my wife had fries that reminded us of Five Guys. There was a ton of fries, and they were tasty. We both ate them because there was enough to share. I ordered the full rack of baby back ribs. Some BBQ places seem to be cheating somehow; a full rack has gotten both smaller and less meaty, and I have no problem finishing a full rack at most places, but Tony's was a real full rack! This rack was so meaty that I ended up taking half home, and it made a full meal the next night too! They talk up their banana pudding, but they were out. We split a cheesecake, and it was very good too. We had the plain one. A good cheesecake doesn't need to be drenched in pie filling if it's good. The staff was friendly and several people checked on us, but they were not pushy or intrusive. We did not try the brisket or pulled pork. I really wish they had beef ribs, even if it was only once a week, and the same for spare ribs, perhaps as a special. The prices were higher than we expected, more than we have paid for similar meals at other BBQ restaurants, but it seems all food, and especially meat, costs much more today.

Other than the prices and Wilber Shirley's absence, it really hadn't changed much in the past 20 years. The decor is "1960s eastern NC BBQ restaurant", which adds to the appeal. Service was friendly and attentive. Our drinks never went empty during our meal. The owner also stopped by to check on us as well. Our server brought us a small basket of hushpuppies, clearly just out of the fryer. While hot, the recipe had not changed over the years and were just as bland as always. Accompanying the hushpuppies was a small serving of some sort of sauce; it didn't had much flavor but I think it was supposed to be butter or at least buttery. My dining companion got the quarter-rack rib special. The ribs were meaty, very flavorful, and tender. They were good enough that the accompanying barbecue sauce really detracted from the ribs. The potato salad was as good as ever. The serving included 4 ribs for $12.50, which I thought was a very good value. I had my standard, the Pork Plate with slaw and potato salad. The serving of chopped pork was generous, but was too dry and over seasoned for my taste. The slaw was fine but unexceptional. The $12.56 price on the menu was a reasonable value, however after we paid we found out that we were charged $13.50. It turns out that the printed menus Wilber's provides in the restaurant don't reflect their latest prices on Toast. Our server did not mention anything about price discrepancies. The difference in prices doesn't seem like they are just rolling in the sales tax to the orders either. This is absolutely unacceptable and reflects a huge failure in judgement by the management and owner. Shame on you. All in all, our experience rates a four-star review. However, when taking the price discrepancies into account, Wilber's earns a 3-star review and that is generous. Restaurants need to accurately advertise their prices to their Customers, whether dining in or getting take out.
