Going to close out the year with a review of a classic barbeque shack, Grady's! Dropped in on a trip out to Kinston and it was totally worth the detour. White cinderblock restaurant with no windows and weathered signage. Inside there's an order window with a piece of paper listing the menu items and prices in hand-written type. I did the barbeque dinner with 2 sides for $12. You get a heaping pile of tender pork, smokey with a hint of sweetness, delicious! And live the field peas on the side, I was less thrilled by the cabbage which was just ok. But overall, I loved my meal and would like to come back and try the chicken if I'm in the area again! read more

Great bbq with super friendly staff. Stopped in on the way back to Raleigh from Wilmington, not too bad a detour and a more interesting drive than i40. Oh, my goodness!!! This was some of the best Eastern North Carolina BBQ I've ever had, and I've had lots. It was so tender and smooth, and it didn't need any additional sauce although sauce was available. The restaurant is an iconic stop on the NC BBQ Trail for a reason. The ladies who work behind the counter are just as sweet as can be. Lovely, gracious ladies! As for the atmosphere, it's typical old-style NC BBQ joint. Very informal. The health grade was 100, for those who worry about such things. read more

UPDATED REVIEW: Grady's is definitely known for their bbq which is delicious fresh and taste good. Definitely enjoyed the collard greens which also had a good flavor I personally felt the cabbage wasn't quite to my liking but everyone season their cabbage differently. Hush puppies were ok but the sweet potato pie was definitely a 10/10. Not only is the food good but their customer service was great friendly and got my order out quickly. read more

Hole in the wall type of a place, located in the middle of no where. No muss, no fuss. Stand in line and order. It is whole hog bbq that brought me, but there are several other options- bbq chicken, chicken fried steak and so on. Ordered the bbq dinner, comes with 2 sides and 4 hush puppies. Sides are what you would expect- green beans, slaw, cabbage, boiled potatoes et al. Absent the cabbage, everything was delicious. To me, the real star was Grady's bbq sauce... maybe the best I ever tasted. They will sell you a bottle of it, but order it with your meal otherwise you have to get back in line. This place is 100% eastern NC bbq... awesome testimony to how good bbq can be when done right. read more

Grady's (grah-dees) rocks. Classic eastern NC pulled pork with fat back mixed in. I grabbed the bottle of sauce but wisely took a bite before adding...doesn't need any sauce. Flavor is on point straight from the well worn wood block. Slaw is on the sweeter side. Corn bread is a the dense variety but good. This is a destination bbq spot worth the trip. read more

The fam and I stopped for lunch on the way to the beach. Very glad we did. Lions and tigers and pigs - oh my! Grady's pulled pork is about the best I've ever had (outside of mine, and even then, it's pretty doggone close). Chopped from a whole hog cooked over wood, the pork was full of flavor, unctuous with the right amount of fat, and kissed with smoke. Eastern Carolina sauces were on the table, but the meat did not need any. Sides were varied (collard greens AND cabbage greens! Black eyed peas, field peas, AND green beans! Potato salad AND cole slaw - and hush puppies, fries and more). All were great, but my heart (and my stomach) always returned to The Pig. Sigh. Don't worry about it being "out of the way." It isn't; Grady's is just 5 minutes off N.C. 117 on the way to Seymour Johnson AFB. It will be our go-to place on future trips. Talk about fast. They must have fixed the plates before we walked in the door. Everything was great; just wanted some banana pudding and collard greens but my stomach couldn't take anymore. Delightful little spot at a literal fork in the road. We could tell it was good because the parking was full, so obviously Grady's is sought after. Excellent, juicy chopped pork with the most exceptional North Carolina style BBQ sauce (is there any other kind in NC?) I've ever had. The BBQ chicken is tender and juicy with plenty of smoky flavor. Grady's is some of the best NC pulled pork barbecue I've had, and it is a worthy member of the North Carolina barbecue trail. From the outside, it may not look like much, but the inside has a family-run feel to it, and the people are very friendly. I came on a Saturday for lunch around 11:45, and we arrived at the right time, because after we ordered, there was a line forming to the door. Efficiency at the ordering window wasn't their forte, so the line tended to move slowly. If you happen to get stuck in a long line - wait it out, it's worth it. I shared a bunch of food with three other people, and here's what we tried: Pulled pork barbecue - You must order pulled pork barbecue of some kind when you come to Grady's, or else your trip is wasted. It is moist, tender, smoky, and I actually like that they include the rinds. Their vinegar sauce is also on point - it has the right amount of tangy-ness and spiciness to pair perfectly with the meat. It's nothing short of amazing. Cole Slaw - They shred their cabbage into larger pieces, which I like. It makes the slaw taste more homemade. It's not too heavy and not slathered with mayo, but it has enough in it to make it tasty. Potato Salad - The potatoes are cut into large chunks, and some of my potatoes were a little harder than I generally like them. The flavor was great, and it wasn't too heavy, either. Hush Puppies - The hush puppies were solid, but didn't blow me away. They had an added crunch on the outside that most hush puppies don't have, but overall, it seemed like a pretty standard hush puppy. Sweet Tea - Hard to go wrong with sweet tea. Banana Pudding - Nothing spectacular with the banana pudding. It was a bit on the sweeter side for me, but still tasted good. Overall, it was an excellent meal, and I wish I had more space in my stomach for more barbecue. Do yourself a favor and make your way out to Brady's to try some incredible pulled pork barbecue - you won't regret it. read more

I took a detour off from a long day's drive on I-9 to check out Grady's on a Saturday afternoon. Waited in line about 45 minutes. Would I do it again? Absolutely! Since I had a long drive ahead, I didn't sit down and eat. Instead, I picked up a chopped pork sandwich (with slaw, of course) and it was spectacular. The hush puppies were outstanding as well. I'm glad I bought a pound of chopped pork and a pound of slaw to take home. Cash only. They don't have a web site, but they do take phone orders. Grady's was the fourth stop on our one day Eastern NC BBQ Quest For The Best - Part One (included B. J.'s Grill & Ken's Grill in La Grange, Wilber's, McCall's, Jack Cobb's in Farmville. and Holt Lake BBQ in Smithfield).At each stop we sampled some fresh BBQ (sandwich or tray), and bought some (also fresh) to take home - amounts varied on the take home, here it was 3 pounds. We got here just after 11, and were the first customers of the day. The reason we started with B. J's, Ken's, and Wilber's is that they are close together, and all 3 serve breakfast, so you can get the BBQ goodies early, and move on. The BBQ was every bit as good as I remember - moist, tender, with some smokiness, and great flavor. I still consider this one of the top five Eastern NC BBQ joints. read more
