    Ken's Grill, La Grange

Far from fancy and perhaps even a little divey in a cute and appealing way, Ken's Grill stands by the side of a busy highway. It was rather crowded with lunch diners today when I arrived and was able to be seated at the counter immediately. A very busy but friendly waitress took my order. A few moments later, a massive pile of food arrived. Pulled pork with onion rings and cole slaw. Yes, I ate one of the delicious hush puppies. A little sweet but yummy. The pulled pork was amazing. It needed no sauce and was moist, flavorful and fantastic. Five stars. Onion rings were fresh and the cole slaw was creamy shredded cabbage with the right amount of vinegar for tartness. I was sitting at the counter so I could see hard work going on as they prepared burger after burger. Maybe when I'm back in the Kingston area, I'll try one of those cheeseburgers. Wow. Wednesday Bbq special with double coleslaw.

I love this place, great food always, the staff is always nice and accommodating. Always get the BBQ special on Wednesdays, it's so moist and flavorful, and I like the other sides as well but the slaw is great, I crave it.

Large bbq plate, BBQ pork, 2 sides and hush puppies.

We pass by this place every time we are heading to/from Emerald Isle (right off HWY 70) and no matter what time it is, there are always cars in the lot. We finally stopped today and now know what the hype is all about--- their BBQ pork is scrumptious! My sister and I shared the large plate, which came with 2 sides (potato salad and onion rings)---PLENTY of food for less than $10. The pork is mixed perfectly with a spicy vinegar sauce. They serve you free crispy pork skins (but you must ask for it) which are delicious to eat along with the chunks of pork. Our sides were good too, as typical sides (our server also threw in a side of cole slaw) but the pork is truly the star. We will probably stop often, now that we're hooked. This is a no frills place, clean and busy. The service is quick and not super friendly (at first) but I imagine it is because they are hustling. You must ask for anything you need (crispy skins, more sauce, etc) and they definitely bring it to you, so don't be shy. I highly recommend you stopping, regardless of (and yet especially because) everyone else is!

    So North Carolinian and cute!

We stopped by this restaurant on our way to Atlantic Beach over labor day weekend. It is truly a local spot. I got the fish stew - which, I've never had before and I would say it's quite different...wasn't my cup of tea. I wish mine had more fish, it was a lot of potatoes and a TON of eggs. Like I think I had 6 eggs in my bowl. We also got the BBQ there, which we thought was okay... but what really shined was the burger..I think we got the Ken's Big Boy Burger? It was delicious! Come here for the burgers...!! Just really simply done, fatty, juicy ground beef patty...yum! I did notice some flies but honestly the hospitality was so amazing from everyone who worked there and I love supporting local businesses! Worth stopping by for their burgers!

Very busy upon arrival. Place was all local folks. Leave your jackets and sweaters in the car because your clothing will smell greasy. Butt this didn't take away from the deliciousness pkg the food. Our pork sandwich was delicious and the flat top Ken's Big Boy burger was seared erfectly.

I'm not going to be cute or clever: This is the grill you need to hit when you're driving from Raleigh to the Crystal Coast. Old-timey diner with the best flat-top cheeseburger ever (I get mine with mustard, raw onion, and homemade chili). It's almost always filled with locals, and the parking lot is filled with work trucks at breakfast and lunch (a true sign that it's good). It's likely your waitress is someone's grandma, and she probably has a beehive and thick blue eye shadow. Ken's doesn't have french fries, they have USA fries (ha!). They're of the crinkle-cut variety and always hot, crispy, and perfectly salted. They open at 5 a.m. and close at 8 p.m. Closed Sundays. Friday is fish stew day, and the place is packed (I'll stick to my burger but I hear the fish stew is famous). Daily specials include fried chicken and barbecue that they cook out back. So skip King's or Wilbur's and give Ken's a try. I think Wednesdays and Saturdays are 'cue days.

Ask the Community - Ken's Grill

Is the fish stew good. Can you buy some for take out?

Yes, it's good, but unless you're a true East Carolinian, beware of the bones. They took me by surprise the first time, but after I got past that initial shock and got down to just enjoying the flavors it was a real treat. Regarding carry-out, I… Read more

I'm a big Cole slaw fan and this was very finely shopped up slaw with amazing flavor. They leave the crispy skin in the pork to give you these little yummy surprises as you eat. I did like their sauce and this part of my meal. Coleslaw- too sweet for me. Nice texture. Potato salad- didn't care for it. Slightly to sweet. Corn cake- sorry but what is this burnt dense piece of square? I couldn't finish it. Banana pudding- had good flavor but I really struggled with the mushy texture and brown color here. Pork Bbq- hubby reported good taste and texture but was very room temp. Could have stood to be hotter. I guess sitting out on the wood block doesn't help. For me, not a great value. When you only enjoyed 1 of the 5 things you ate, that is a low rating automatically. Service- friendly and quick. As soon as we sat down, there was a homeless guy begging for food. This was upsetting because we don't know this individual or knew what intentions he had. Just came out of nowhere into the dining room. Not sure if the employees noticed while they were cleaning up the kitchen. Play back the camera feed. What if I was alone without my hubby. Very unsettling!!!!! We won't be back,

The restaurant itself felt comfortable as well: the table tops were worn, the small booths felt worn, the decorative metal siding was oxidized, and even the plates and silverware seemed worn. This comfortable atmosphere also persisted with our meals. I tried the beef tips and they were OK after I added a pinch of salt. The portion was adequate but not especially generous. Likewise, my yams were not very sweet and served in an unusually dark sauce. The brunswick stew, which I paid an extra $1 for, had a strong smoky BBQ flavor but oddly had peas in it. While my sides were not very good, it just felt like they were the prepared the same way they had been prepared for many years. My dining companion enjoyed her grilled pork chop, noting that it was clearly cooked to order, but thought her string bean side was really mushy, seasoned poorly, and just not good. The basket of hush puppies was a complete and utter failure: cold, undercooked, greasy and flavorless. blah. Our server clearly enjoyed being comfortable too. Unfortunately, we needed refills on our beverages and the extra effort impacted her comfortableness. So sorry, not sorry. Kings seems like the sort of restaurant that meanders along until one day they realize they lost the qualities that made them successful in the first place years ago and they drift away into oblivion. There's a cost to being comfortable. Not recommended.

I was stationed at Courthouse Bay and it was the first time I experienced Carolina whole hog bbq. Dan worked on base, but also provided the instructor staff with Carolina bbq and all the fixins'. I was hooked! After years of serving all over the place, I was happy to find out he opened his own place, Thig's BBQ House & catering. The family and I ate here a few times trying everything they had. Every time we come here, we know the food, service, and atmosphere is great. We enjoyed it so much, Thig's catered my retirement. All communication was through the daughter, who I believe handles the catering. I gave her the back story which she appreciated. She delivered the catering on time and set it all up. There was so much food! Brisket, pork, fried chicken, vegetables, and tea. Everyone raved about the food! I think we ordered too much, but it was worth it. We ate leftovers for as long as we could. I'm definitely impartial to Thig's for Carolina BBQ. I'll continue to enjoy this place as long as I can. Highly recommend giving Thig's a try!

I hope they spruce the place up over time. Like many places post-COVID they have things on their website menu they no longer sell. My wife made a point of praising the hushpuppies, some BBQ joints are not worth eating but these were good. I was hoping for spare ribs, Kansa City style ribs or beef ribs but they don't do those anymore. The beans were good and worth eating, the brisket was moist and not too smoky. We generally liked everything. One thing for oaths with sensitive hearing, because there are few decorations and hard walls and floors the room is kind of loud and echoey. I hope they make some effort to soften the sound, hang some soft decorations or do something to make the sound more appealing instead of the sound of an empty warehouse.
