Tried a little bit of everything. Brisket was chopped and sauced. Good flavor but I prefer sliced. My coworkers plate had a piece of sliced which he said was good except for trying to cut it with a plastic butter knife. BBQ was seasoned well, didn't need any sauce imo. This is a butcher shop and restaurant. We were welcomed by Kevin the chef and he helped us navigate the menu written on a large sheet of craft paper hanging the full length of the wall. He recommended the brisket, which had been cooking 16 hours. It was delicious and the sauce was spot on. Also shared entrees so we could sample more, tried the pulled pork on cornbread. Cornbread pretty much crunched apart and it had to be eaten with a fork. Loved the mustard that came with it. We didn't get the slaw that I thought came with it, but did get stir fried veggies as my side and LA had sweet potato fries. The restaurant is wide open, clean, modern and claims to be super nice to their farm animals before butchering them for us. My friend couldn't handle the sweet animal pictures hanging inside and went with children's grilled cheese and a side salad. What a deal for $3.50. The red velvet cake available only on Fridays and Saturdays wasn't very good--but I forced myself to eat all $5 worth of it. read more

This little gem is on a side street in downtown Kingston, NC. I had the Texas style brisket and it did not disappoint. Bark was great, good smoke ring and a layer of fat they somehow made kinda crispy. The collards are spicy and cooked with meat as well. Wonderful place! We had the brisket sandwich. I prefer my brisket without sauce and if you do too, just let them know. Nonetheless excellent! The star however were individual whole fried okra pods... perfect salty, crispy, lightly cornmeal battered. And the corn and green bean casserole was delicious too. Great ambiance, friendly host (owner?) and gorgeous butcher counter that made me wish I had a cooler (and lived within driving rather than flying distance). Never been to downtown Kinston before; thriving cute downtown with lots to do. It's hard to find farm to table places anymore. That is why this place is a unique gem. All of their meats are grass fed and organic. Which makes it better and healthier all around for the consumer. Plus it is very high quality as well. It is also hard to find places that still butcher their meat on site. There is so much to choose from brisket to sausages!!! So this place also serves food as well. I ended up having lunch here. I wasn't disappointed either. I decided to try the Texas brisket. It was probably the best brisket I've ever eaten. It was perfectly done and the fat on it was nice and charred. I usually trim the excess fat of on any meat that I may order. But not this time. I also ordered fries with it as well. With the fries on the side you didn't get a lot. I also got a side of Mac n cheese. I was pleasantly surprised that it was smoked to. Not a morsel of my food was left. The place was also nice and clean. The only real complaint I have is it was a little too pricey and the portions were a little smaller than I expected. Would I eat here again? Yes I would. IMHO, the best BBQ in Eastern North Carolina, and it's from the restaurant division of Rainbow Meadows Farm. This family has been farming in Greene County since 1746, and their Berkshire pork is pasture raised on a diet that includes acorns, grasses, and herbs. The farm's American Devon cattle is grass fed and pasture raised without synthetic hormones, never finished on corn, and is dry aged for 3 weeks. They deliver from their extensive website every two weeks to New Bern and Raleigh farmers markets. or if you're up Kinston way, stop in, pick up your order, and have lunch. Meat and ready made items are available for take home from the restaurant as well. The BBQ is smoked for 16 hours on hickory and mesquite, and this transplant was happy it wasn't in a vinegar sauce. The brisket and pork were wonderful. You'll want to take some to go too. Get the fried okra as a side...it's whole fried okra...yum! read more

Fresh ground chuck cooked on a flat iron to give it a slight char. A simple soft bun with lettuce and tomato. A side order of fried okra was a trwat. For a business to say that they are farm to table meats and have certain cuts of meat the kitchen does them no favors. I have gone 2 times and have not been impressed. First time was a bbq sandwich on a cornbread, could not eat as a sandwich as the cornbread fell apart and it did not have a great flavor. Second time I had the beef stroganoff. When I think of that dish I think creamy and big chunks of meat. Instead I get ground beef and dry noodles with no seasoning. Need to update recipes in kitchen. read more

Quite honestly the best meal I've had in a long time. I got a cabbage roll dish called Ukrainian Holuptsi. Not your grandma's cabbage rolls! The flavors were very deep, rich, complex, and spicy. My side of squash casserole was excellent, also the best I've had in a long time. The portions were very generous; I had enough to bring home for a good-sized snack. At $10 for the entree, the side, and tea or lemonade, it was a very good deal. If I lived closer, I'd eat there every week, or more. However, some of Ms. Pridgen's entrees are available frozen at the New Bern Farmer's Market, so at least I can get some of this great food from that venue.
