We were traveling south and were interested in sampling some BBQ for lunch. We came upon this place and found it to be quite popular with the locals as there was a line around the block for the drive through. So we thought we would give it a try. The good news ... from what they had to offer, the food was quite tasty. The bad news ... the offerings were limited. From what we saw on the menu, it seemed to be mostly chicken (with a lot of it fried) and some chopped pork. Now I know this is the Carolinas so brisket may not be an option. But the pig is so revered I thought we would see that offered a number of ways, and at least see some baby back ribs on the menu. Not sure this place is named properly as I expected to see more BBQ than anything else on the menu, and that is simply not the case. read more

Bill Ellis. IYKYK The atmosphere isn't even close. It's very much like a standard fast food outlet, but who comes here for atmosphere? The fried chicken is the star. Fresh, crispy, and delicious, this chicken might even rival Parker's. My only complaint is that I don't think I've ever seen such small chicken parts. The bbq is pretty good, not the best but very far from the worst. Sides are the usual choices. Slaw and boiled potatoes are standard, stew was damn good, yams taste like dessert which is exactly as it should be, and collards left something to be desired. You get a choice between hush puppies and ENC corn sticks, which I appreciate as I've never cared for corn sticks, but the puppies would have been a lot better if they were fresher. I brought home a container of chicken pastry so we'll see how that goes. Next time - and there will be a next time - I'm getting the fried liver and gizzards. Any place that serves fried livers owns a piece of my heart (probably the part that the cardiologist tends to). The parking lot is small but there's overflow parking adjacent. The food is awesome, really unbelievably good: almost as good as home cooked. The service is incredible as well. The prices are already reasonable AND veterans get a 10% discount on meals, 365 days a year- not just on Veterans Day! It's no secret that the food is good: at any given time that they 're open, you will see the cars coming to the drive through out in the street on both sides of the driveway. Tried the restaurant again 3/27/26, around 4:30pm, fish and shrimp, slaw and potatoes. After waiting in the drive through for 15 minutes, still had to pull aside and wait even longer. Got the food home and why was it not hot? Don't live far from the restaurant. Came straight home and the food had NO hot or warmth to it. Ate some and was sick on the stomach all night. Hush puppies were large but had a dull color to them as if they were recooked. Room temperature seafood probably just cooked early and served later to me. This food is mediocre at best. Seriously. The fried chicken is very dry, very overcooked or refried. The corn sticks are overcooked and hard all the way through, I would expect a soft center. I was recommended this place based on my love for Bill Ellis food. This place was opened by his son, so you know the food is going to be about the same - right? First off, the location is a bit hard to navigate as the there is very little parking, the line is around the building, and you have to make sure you are going to right direction to enter. I was there during a busy timeframe - so that was a little overwhelming to deal with for a first time. However, I give it to them they have a system in place where you the staff is friendly and get you in and out as fast as possible. Within the drive-thru (how I ordered) they came to the car took the order via a pad, you drive up to another window and pay, then you go to the last window to get your food. A rule of thumb, if you forget something - THEY WILL NOT ALLOW YOU TO ADD IT ON. I saw this message all over the building. They stated it causes issues, which I can understand. So, keep that in mind. If you want something additional get back in line or walk in and order it. For the amount of food we got, the pricing was very good! However, I do have some elements of what we got that I wouldn't go back for and there are somethings I would! What would I go back for? The chicken - juicy and fresh! The chew bread - amazingly good - want some now. The liver - cooked good, made to order with great flavor (need to ask for additional gravy next time). The banana pudding - very very very rich, but good. What I wouldn't go back for? Yams - where is the seasoning? Green beans - where is the seasoning? Slaw - celery seeds - yuck! Mac and cheese - not horrible but nah you can keep it. The location inside looked to be clean and well lit. We might go back to try some of the other items on the menu. Visited Marty's for the first and last time Saturday, 8/30 at approximately 3:30pm with immediate service as I noticed a long line the day prior. Upon submitting my order, as a person who's never dined at this place, I asked the cashier how many pieces of oysters were in the seafood platter and what type of fish. Only to be told they don't know as it may vary. Fair enough. I asked what are corn sticks as my family order included hush puppies and my additional platter could offer another option. After getting an answer decided to choose oysters only with corn sticks along with the white meat family platter. I was rushed to pay and move up as there was no one in line behind me which was noticeably a complete difference from what I saw the day before. Once I viewed the receipt I realized I had been charged for an extra fish and oyster platter. And on top of that my receipt had RUDE written at the top. Totally appalled but at the mercy of Marty's because I still hadn't received my order, I decided not to actually BE RUDE but instead share my experience. Once home to closely look at my order I learned I did not receive white meat as there was a thigh and leg in my order and all corn sticks. Marty's it doesn't matter if your food is good or not, which it isn't. The sweet potato's are bland and the macaroni is made with cheese sauce. Your customer service needs to be up to par. Don't have hot, bothered, impatient employees taking orders. I would never recommend this place or dine there ever again. Why would you even allow an incompetent employee to be able to label someone else as rude when clearly they are rude and unhappy? Spent almost $70 and they aren't worth 7 cents! read more

We are driving back to NY from FL. We were craving famous NC BBQ. Based on reading reviews we decided to venture from the hotel. Its a gem of down home cooking. The BBQ sauce was juicy and tangy. The collards were nicely chopped and not bitter or greasy. Mac & cheese was spot on. We got there at 4pm on a Saturday night and the crowds were starting to arrive. The staff is super helpful and courteous. My only complaint is that I didnt order a large dinner I received 2 very tiny pieces of chicken. I don't normally eat meat and this was delish! I came into town for two nights from Arizona on a work trip. My local contact suggested Marty's He is close with the family owners. Gotta say I love this place. The counter service order had the sweetest ladies taking orders We sat down the seven of us at two tables at opposite ends of the small dining area inside. The same sweet lady who took our orders and another to help her brought the meals to us and one by one made sure everyone had the right order I had the bbq sandwich combo with fries hush puppies and a fountain drink as well as the banana cream pudding. Every year we stay overnight in Wilson while traveling south for the winter and each time we go to Marty's. The food is excellent and you can't beat the price. My wife and I had the fried chicken and it was very flavorful and southern authentic. The hush puppies and sides were also delicious. The atmosphere is very clean and simple and the staff very pleasant. Cars were lined up around the block for pick up and that has to tell you something . Great customer service at the drive-thru with the cute girl but it was 45minutes from closing and the food was dry and flavorless. The soup was the only thing that we could taste flavor from the spices. The lines are usually long but this is not the best BBQ I've tasted. The chicken did not have enough meat on it. I've been visiting Wilson for at least 10 years. This time, I wanted some BBQ and this came up. Since there wasn't a delivery option, I made the 3 mile drive and notice that I wasn't the only one that wanted BBQ. The drive-thru line was sooooo long that it went out the parking lot down the street. I was trying to figure out what in the world they put in the food...just kiddin. I met Wanda in the parking lot and she guided me where to park my car. It was a madhouse out there. I parked and walked in. It was maybe a dozen people inside either eating or waiting in line. I see Wanda again. Her smile lights up a whole room. She greeted me and we chatted for a bit. She said that Bill's was another spot that was opened and her husband owned it. I do remember hearing about that place. This place was very busy and it had to be like 15 people in the back. It was a full production. Wanda offered some BBQ to me as a sample, I said that's ok because I already ordered some. A few minutes She brought out a sample to me. Why be mad, it's southern hospitality. I had a great conversation with Wanda. The food for 4 people was under $50 which is not bad. The staff all had smiles on their faces and the wait wasn't long either. I am from North Carolina, but live in Texas (at the moment, anyway). The #1 BBQ in the world is Eastern NC BBQ. My family lives in Wilson, very near Marty's, and this is a must-stop every time I go home to visit. Also, we always stop at Marty's for a pint or larger to take to the OBX with us. All you need is that, a loaf of bread, and Duke's mayo. The chicken pastry here is nearly as good as my grandma's was, and that's saying A LOT. Very, very tasty. Stopped by Marty's on the way to emerald island. The drive through line here was ridiculous. We settled on parking at the Walgreens next door and ate there. If you walk in and get takeout it only takes a couple minutes. As for the food, I got a bbq sandwich and large bbq dinner. The damage for those two things was 15 bucks. It was a pretty good value. The string beans were canned; I would avoid. I got the Mac and cheese that was not bad. Needed salt. The pork was not too bad. It was better with cole slaw.
