I opted for the fried chicken with cabbage and tater salad. The young guy that took the order was clean cut, well mannered and polite. We were given a number and seated ourselves at a window seat. On each of the tables were a bottle of Texas Pete, napkins, an unknown BBQ sauce that tasted like Sweet Baby Rays and a pepper shaker. No salt. The window and windowsills had plenty of evidence hygienic practices weren't their strong suit: Remnants of what appeared to be days-old hush puppies, pulled pork and perhaps green beans (?) were visible along the window sills and the bench seats were long past their prime which made the mere time someone had invested into the wall decor and cosmetics perplexing. It was very brief observation our food appeared via a very friendly young lady. ...In styrofoam containers with plastic utensils. Mildly reassuring the same people responsible for the dining room's cleanliness weren't also responsible for washing actual dishes and silverware. Being a Southerner, I could see the cabbage had not been seasoned with anything - Not so much a speckle of pepper nor an onion sliver. Forget a hint of fat back, hog jawl, or even a bacon grease sheen - So I asked for vinegar. Our server gave the option of regular vinegar or pepper vinegar, I chose the pepper and she returned with such rapidly. White vinegar with a pinch of red pepper flakes in a pre-portioned plastic container. No celery, no pickles, no identifiable parts it was just cold mashed potatoes covered in a runny egg/maybe knock off Miracle Whip and cheap mayo blend and takes the award for being the absolute worst "potato salad" I have ever eaten. Noticing all the nods to Christ and Jesus being Lord and Savior all I could think was, "Amen. I hope this doesn't make me sick." The fried chicken? Straight outta a US Foods or Sysco wholesaler. Really strange considering it's an unobstructed easy WALK to the adjacent Food Lion where someone could buy lard, chicken, flour and seasonings to do up some yard bird. It was clearly nothing battered there in house and the nail in the coffin was those hush puppies. Those tasted like a Temu version of hush puppies someone would fry up after frying fish with an odd mix of House of Autry breading with sugar added. The service was great.
