Needed to grab something quick and had a hankering for some BBQ. I never stop here and based on the last few and far between times that I have gone here only reinforces why I go to Sam Jones. Smithfield's needs to take pride in what they do and what they offer. We went through the drive thru and ordered 2 barbecue sandwiches...which came very light on the coleslaw and the meat was not chopped....instead it was trings of meat and the cole slaw was more like cabbage leaves--not finely chopped at all. And then to have waited for cold food? And as for the large coke (32 oz) chock full of ice barely any coke. 8/6/22: We've been here twice in the passed few weeks. We go through the drive thru & the order taker hasn't been the friendliest either time. I ordered a chicken tender kid's meal, & wing snack, bbq sandwich. Both times, my wings were cold. My son enjoyed his kid's meal & my friend also enjoyed the bbq sandwich. This visit to Smithfield's was absolutely epic! Our dinner service began with placing a very quick order, which Mr. McKennies to extra good care of our party. We selected to sit at a table near the northern face of the establishment, which provided comfortable couch seating and two additional static chairs. The food came in a jiffy (extra ordinary swift); hot, and perfectly to our specifications. I have to be critical when I say the fixings on the side need to be a bit more bulky, as they were epically good but, vastly small in proportion. The main courses (chicken & shrimp) were delicious and not full of grease. I do understand food cost is paramount but, having a good balance of food is in order. This is absolutely something I would present to the owners of Smithfield's. I say this not because I think customers should have a plate overflowing with food but, I will volunteer that precautions need to be equally substantial. I go on to say... Lady Mia our iconic waitress performed iconically; even went beyond our expectations, as a member of out party is allergic to shellfish, which Lady Mia stepped in to pull another table near just for our party's convenience of seating. Though-out our Smithfield's experience located at: 4000 Jones Sausage Road Garner, NC 27529 we were showered with good ol' home cooking, great southern hospitality, and professionalism beyond normalcy. After years of passing Smithfield's locations and never stopping, I finally decided to try it. I had heard the barbecue was surprisingly decent for fast food and I found that to be largely true. Now, no one would mistake this for a famous plate of 'cue from a master smoker, but for a mass-produced product, they do pretty well. The restaurant is a bit cleaner than your typical fast food spot. Not quite Chick-Fil-A clean, but it's not a Burger King or something gross. The menu offers a wide variety and the sides are better than what you'd find at most fast food restaurants. The fried okra, for example, is pretty tasty. I also liked the soft serve ice cream machine and it was kind of like being in an old-school cafeteria again. If you want North Carolina barbecue, don't go here expecting something great. But if you are traveling through and need a quick vote then you could do a lot worse than a meal here. read more

This restaurant is another one of my spots! love the meaty barbecue with slaw on top and seasoned just right! It's a bit pricey but it's worth it! Their French fries are great, they don't lay on my stomach like bricks making me in the process! you can find them on the highway while traveling but I wish they were everywhere!! I highly recommend them if you're looking for change from other fast food restaurant. They have a variety of items and plates you can purchase as well, but I mainly go for the barbecue sandwiches and fries! They are very friendly.. Smithfield's Chicken 'n Bar-B-Q is the hometown brand. The company started down the road in Smithfield, and it should surprise nobody that they serve chicken and Eastern NC style barbecue. For the uninitiated, Eastern NC style barbecue sauce is vinegar based and slightly spicy. It is also known as the superior style of NC barbecue. Anybody who disagrees is simply mistaken. Outside of chicken and barbecue/pulled pork, Smithfield's also serves fried shrimp and catfish. Menu items average slightly over $10 for platters, under $10 for sandwiches. I ordered a pulled pork sandwich with hushpuppies and a sweet tea for $7.53. I tried to ignore the fact that the cashier was coughing without covering his mouth, but ew. Dude, cough into your sleeve. Couple that with the fact that he was dressed like a manager, and things are slightly questionable. The food was good, but there is a high bar for barbecue in the South. Smithfield does manage to set itself apart with its friendly service. Despite being a fast food restaurant, employees regularly walked through the dining room to offer drink refills. Coughy McCougherson aside, I had a good dining experience. Smithfield's is not quite good enough to go out of your way to find, but it's a good choice for a meal if it's convenient to you. read more

I was passing by on the way home and it was lunchtime and once I saw the sign I knew it was time for some Brunswick stew, hush puppies and chicken. My experiences with Smithfield's have always been good ones and this restaurant was the same, consistently good food, plentiful, clean restaurant and excellent service. I had the two piece chicken with barbeque sauce. I remove the skin and eat it with the coleslaw and it is a wonderful meal. I know the chicken is fried, but it doesn't have any breading on it, so once I take the skin off, it tastes great and I can tell myself it is remotely healthy. I've been pleasantly surprised by the food at Smithfield's. Normally, I avoid this sort of chain, especially for something like BBQ, where the quality (and style) can really vary a lot from restaurant to restaurant. Then one day, my wife brought back some leftover BBQ from Smithfield's and it was pretty tasty. So I finally got myself into one of their restaurants and had a great meal. The BBQ is very tasty, with a great sauce that reminds me of Clyde Cooper's. The fried chicken is really good, too. Overall, much better than I was expecting. The restaurant was also clean and everyone who worked there was friendly and helpful. My only complaint was that the banana pudding was artificially-flavored commercial pudding (tasted like Laffy Taffy) rather than vanilla pudding with sliced-up bananas in it. Really really poor service and food is as reviewed by others to be below par. I have been to this location a number of times and each time have left with a feeling of real disappointment. We have arranged for a birthday party there for our 11 year old son. At the time of cutting the cake , we asked the guy and lady at the counter for a cake knife. I've eaten at this Smithfield's over the years, but the last couple times in the past few weeks will have me going to another location soon. I usually ask for my hushpuppies on the side, because I don't like them getting soggy with other items on the plate. The oldest visit, the manager was running the register and was texting or doing something on his phone the whole time I was ordering and checking out, so much so that he walked a couple feet with phone in hand to get my drink only to have to come back to the register to make sure of my drink order. I stated I would eat in, and HP on the side. First, the meal came to me in a bag and styro container with everything together. I told them about both errors. The second time the meal came back in a new bag and styro, with HP in a separate bag. I immediately asked from some butter also. After about 10 mins, I walked up to get my butter. The receipt stated to go and HP on side. This visit, I requested the same thing, eat in, HP on side. First, everything was piled on one plate. The girl that took my order noticed it and had trouble getting the chef/preparer to understand what was wrong (same chef/preparer as last time BTW). Finally they brought me my food with the Potato Salad and Slaw on the side in separate dishes, but at least things were separated. The receipt stated eat in, and HP on side. Another practice I've found odd, for security reasons, they will take your card and then go and get your drink(s). Then they will come back, swipe your card and give it back to you. Granted you can see them the entire time with your card, but I find it peculiar that they do that with your card, instead of quickly swiping and giving back to you, or getting your drink and then take your card. I find this as a small security risk that is clearly not needed. read more

As someone who is used to a thick BBQ sauce, I was unpleasantly surprised by this restaurant. The server had to wrap the takeout box in saranwrap to keep the relatively thin sauce inside the box. The sauce smelled primarily of vinegar and the chicken and sides were ultimately inedible. At most, it could be equated to chicken pieces bathed in a strongly vinegar based soup. While the service was personable, prompt and pleasant, I feel as though the food was sub par. If you enjoy a very strong vinegar base to your BBQ than this is for you. If not, steer clear! read more

Some like the native vinegar style, and some like the smokey sweet sauces from around the U.S. I tried Smithfields since it's known as one of the big 3 or 4 barbecue joints in the Triangle that represents a unique approach. First, one must admit to a certain subjectivity when it comes to this food alley, but Smithfield's ranked pretty low in my experience in the region. Going the half star route, I would give this location two and a half, because it has been clean and efficient. I'm sure that there are much better versions of the barbecue around town. What disappointed me the most was the hush puppies--they are a way that I judge these types of places, and the hush puppies here were very blah.
