Some of my favorite places to eat are in close proximity of a gas station, and this is no exception. You need to put this on your next road trip list of places to stop. I had no clue what to expect being a first time patron. My spouse had been here several times and was always raving about how good it was. The stars aligned and we finally made it during a meal time. We came in and ordered and paid at the counter, found our seats, and then waited while our food was being prepared. There's something to see on every wall, and you can tell they know what they're doing with all of the trophies on display that they've won throughout the years. The indoor seating isn't too ample, so don't plan a family reunion, but it can hold a few families at dinner time. There's not a bad meat on the menu. If you're a vegetarian, this is not your new favorite spot. We got their brisket, chicken leg, and smoked turkey. The sauces at the table were tasty, and everyone found a favorite. We were thankful for the ample supply of paper towels, because our littles chowed down and needed to be wiped clean. This Redneck BBQ Lab knows what they're doing. On this particular night, they had too many leftover chicken halves towards the end of the evening, and were selling them half off, so we ate our food, and then got chicken to go for a future meal. If ya have to go thru Benson, pull right off I-40 at exit #319 and belly up to the bar at the Redneck BBQ Lab, where they spell Sawse right, make cornbread and Tater Salad as good as yer Grandma but don't burn the brisket like yer daddy always does. Meat is sold by the pound here. 1/4 pound don't sound like much but fills an average person up nicely. If yer like me, n want leftovers for late-night tv watchin', or t'take to work for lunch t'marra, go ahead n order a half pound. I ordered brisket, which was so tender it fell apart on my fork, n sausage, which was already cut in slices for me but dripping juice anyway. (They serve it right here, too, obviously). You git yer choice of their house sawses. Their Grand Champion Sawse, which is a smoky-tangy-sweet, or Competition Sawse, which is "tangy-sweet w/a little heat" (I didn't find it "hot" but I'm used t'eatin' jalapenos) or the North Carolina Sawse, which is yer Tarheel Vinegar style. They're all good, and I et a bit o each, but the Competition Sawse is prolly my fave. The food is very reasonably priced, especially for bbq, and you won't spend n arm n a leg if'n ya eat here. Exceptional food AND service!!! The Redneck BBQ Lab is conveniently located right off of I-40 and is a great place to stop in for a great meal. If you are traveling (or just need fuel) you can fill up at the fuel pumps while grabbing a bite to eat, as this restaurant is connected to a gas station! The brisket here is tender and has a great balance of fat and lean meat. Their competition sauce goes great with it, along with some freshly brewed sweet tea to chug it down! The jalapeño mac and cheese is awesome but you can definitely taste the jalapeño. It is not subtle. They also give you a biscuit AND a slice of cornbread! Even though this is a "help yourself" restaurant with free seating and grab-it-yourself utensils, there is an employee frequently walking around asking if he can refill your drinks and is welcome to strike up a conversation with you. The one in particular is extremely friendly, and is always at the restaurant to make your experience more enjoyable! read more

Great food. Surprisingly so. Pulled pork and sausage are excellent. They were out of brisket when I visited but I'm convinced that it's equally special. Customer service was decent. This place is amazing! I'm not going to lie I was reconsidering trying it out just because it's located in a gas station which isn't always the best type of food. But this place changed that theory for me, I got the fat redneck and a large side of jalapeño Mac and cheese. Only regret is not getting an order to go! They have plenty of seating inside and they also have a lot of trophy's and metals they've won in bbq competitions, which is pretty neat. Will definitely be returning! read more

We drove off of I-95 about 8miles to get here. Sounds so good and it was worth the side trip for lunch while traveling. The wife and I both got the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw on the side. I got combo with potato salad and a drink. There are 5 different BBQ sauces to pick from. It on the side of a BP gas station. They have small main room and bigger second room to handle the crowd. Service was quick and one the guys walk around taking trays and refilling drinks. If you like good BBQ (they lots of awards) then I highly recommend you make a stop here. read more

Our first visit was yesterday and the line was really long and the drive through was just as long! I realized why this place was packed after eating their pulled pork! I visited this restaurant on my drive from Raleigh to Wilmington since it received good reviews and it was something my picky colleague could eat. He hasn't been too happy with some of the Texas style bbq restaurants I've picked when we've traveled outside of Texas..but this one was a little different. After looking over the menu, I decided to order a la carte and picked 1/4 lb brisket, 1 sausage link (black pepper garlic), and the 2 bone st louis ribs. My favorite of the meats I ordered was actually the ribs. Although I asked for moist brisket, the brisket was half dry and half moist. The sausage was good but not quite what u get in TX. Redneck Barbecue Lab was a mixed bag in the best-and-worst way. The brisket sandwiches and smoked turkey were really good, and the BBQ sauce options were the cherry on top. The decor is awesome--super country and exactly what you'd expect from the name. But the ambiance felt mid, and the staff/service was almost non-existent--our food took forever to hit the table. A colleague picked up take-out from Redneck BBQ Lab. So this review is only for the food...and a data sample size of 1... The Fat Redneck is a laughably large sandwich featuring both sliced brisket and a ridiculous amount of pulled pork. Rather than dislocated my jaw on this beast, I opted to dissect it with a fork...also so I could try each protein separately and get a taste (pun intended) of their lab work. Both meats were good, but certainly not the best BBQ I've ever had. Both were tender, had decent flavor, but also nothing particularly noteworthy. If you dip them in their "Sawse" it was better, but also they do sweet sauce, which is not my favorite, as it covers the wonderful Smokey flavors of BBQ. I got collards and green beans on the side...both exceptionally average. All-in-all, this was a Quantity over Quality situation. But a decent sandwich at the same time. I won't be seeking them out for a second round. But if we happen to go there for lunch or someone is picking up more take out, I'd still go in for them again. read more

A must go in NC for sure! When you walk in the walls are covered with plaques and trophy's they have won and so well deserved! They are popular so expect a little bit of a wait but nothing too bad. When we went we maybe waited to order and then waited for food for half an hour at most. Seatings a little limited when busy but we found a spot. They also have outdoor picnic table seating. It's attached to a gas station so it's definitely a tiny but cozy atmosphere. Everything was delicious! The mac and the beans were our favorite sides. The staff was absolutely amazing. They were moving so fast and still so friendly and welcoming. Would definitely stop by again on our way to Wilmington. A cool rural farm and barn interior with old signs sharing a space with a BP gas station north of Benson . Very friendly and helpful staff. There was a line but it went pretty fast, plus I was inside all the time and not in the heat for about 30 minutes. AC and fans, yeah! First time here, so I went hog wild so to speak. I got 5 1/4 lb serving of meat and one side. Had to try the collards which were good but average. The cornbread came free which was good because unfortunately it was sweet not just good old buttermilk. Luckily I was there on a day when they have burnt ends and jalapeño cheese sausage. The sausage was very juicy and cheesy with a bit of heat. The pulled pork was good but sang with the vinegar sauce. The brisket tasted good if a bit dry which was fixed with their smoky sauce. I really enjoyed the smoked turkey with their sweet and spicy sawse. But the best was the Burnt Ends, delicious! I'd be coming here again but I heard they've opened up a place in North Hills Raleigh which is closer to home, but if you're near there you need to stop in. Once upon a time myself and 15 other bikers took it upon ourselves to ride all around the triangle from Wake Forest to Benson and try all of the top rated barbecue...12 places in one day. To keep it fair, we got 1lbs of pulled pork at every stop and then another item. Of the 12 places we tried, Redneck BBQ lab reigns supreme and is the king of bbq as far as we were concerned. If you can get their burnt ends they are to die for but if you can't, go for the brisket. If that's not on the table then the ribs. The chicken and pork are great too especially the pulled pork sandwich with coleslaw on top...yum!! The collard greens here are some of the best anywhere and you can't go wrong with some jalapeño cornbread. The potatoes are also a favorite. They have two dining rooms so there's usually plenty of space to sit down and eat and they have an outside area as well. My only gripe is that the drinks are kept behind the counter and staff is not trained well to refill drinks for those who are eating when you approach the counter. They have an assortment of sauces on the table, I suggest trying them all but their BBQ is good enough to not need any sauce if you're a BBQ purist. read more

Everything was terrific here. I had the pastrami which is a Sunday special! My husband had pulled pork and my mom had the ribs. My mom always has the ribs, coleslaw and green beans here. Traveling to NC and wanted to try some BBQ, so we stopped here. Don't be thrown off by the location- it is in a gas station plaza- because the atmosphere inside is fun and kitschy, and the service is quick and efficient while maintaining a friendly air. Wow! Magnificent BBQ!! We were on our way back from Orlando and found The Redneck BBQ Lab on Yelp. It's an unassuming little restaurant on the corner of a gas station. Let me just say the staff were very friendly. Meat and side dishes were abundant. The brisket is the most moist and flavorful I've ever eaten. Better than City BBQ, way better than the new Missions BBQ. My son said the pulled pork was fantastic. The baked beans were really good. They're more on the savory side but if you want the beans a little sweeter squeeze some of their award winning BBQ sauce on them. Collards were spot on. I really don't care for collards that are sweet and their collards were spot on. Green beans as well. The corn bread was a little dry but some might like that. You can tell a really great BBQ place by their Mac and cheese and let me tell you it's phenomenal! Especially when it has jalapeño peppers or brisket mixed in. Like I mentioned above the sauces are amazing and full of flavor. The only reason I did give a 4 star and not a 5 is the little dining area when you walk in to order was very dirty. All the tables had food on them and the condiments were sticky. I know it was a Sunday towards 4pm but there was plenty of young employees talking and goofing off in the back. Probably could have used some of that energy to sweep and deep clean the tables and floors. We are about an hour and ten minutes away from this BBQ gem and we will be back! We came here based on the winning reputation and trophies. Tried to order brisket but they were out, the brisket Mac also out, got the regular Mac and it was terrible it was old and hard. The pork ribs were not bad just not competition worthy in my opinion, perhaps I'm jaded by Franklin's in Austin and Heritage in San Juan Cap.
