I serve as the Hospitality Committee Chair at Martin Magnet Middle School, and we recently ordered from City Barbeque for our Meet the Teacher Night. With so much happening, we appreciated having a convenient option close to our school and the experience was wonderful from start to finish. I arrived early, as usual, and the team was already preparing our order. One employee greeted me warmly before connecting me with Jack, who was kind, knowledgeable, and incredibly thorough. I watched him carefully check off each item as he packed everything, making sure nothing was missed. Jack also helped carry the order to my car and load it. Another employee, who was already off the clock, stepped in to help as well. Their thoughtfulness made me feel truly taken care of. The restaurant was also clean and well maintained. Our teachers and staff loved the food! The pork, chicken, and delicious sides gave everyone a variety of options, and everything was hot and ready to serve perfect for our busy evening. My second time here, this time with two friends, after a visit to the museum nearby. I got the brisket again with no bun, but two different sides. I got the potato salad and the fried okra. I was disappointed in the fried okra, but the potato salad was good and the brisket was very good. I like the sweet BBQ sauce but they have several different kinds. Tea is great too.... The dining room was not very clean....had to search for a clean table, but finally found one, and we came at a down time, it was not busy at all. I did not see anyone cleaning tables the whole time we were there and we sat and talked for awhile. My friends got pulled pork sandwiches and both got mac and cheese. They said it was all good and they had never been here before. The food came out quickly, but was put in take out bags and I know I said it was dine in....oh well, I did take some of mine home for later, but the other two ate all theirs. If it had not been so hot, we would have sat outside. The tables there looked nice. I would return to this location. read more

Okay when down in the south I had to try this chain BBQ spot. As soon as we walked in we were greeted, friendly customer service. I got a two meat tray. The 18 hour brisket was delectable, tender, and tasty. Pulled pork was also tender and flavorful. The corn pudding was amazing it was a mix of corn pudding and bread. I enjoyed the collard greens. It was a very rainy Sunday, and I decided to get an MMR shot at the CVS at Landmark and Lake Boone Trail. When I walked out of CVS, the smoky aroma was so prevalent that I had to get some BBQ for dinner. You order at a counter at the front entrance, and they call you when your order is ready. I have been to the City Barbecue at University City in Charlotte and this one on Lake Boone Trail. It is a good national chain. I love the contemporary commercial architecture with the neo-industrial interior design of this stand-alone store. The person at the counter was very polite and friendly. Besides ordering my dinner, I also purchased a bottle of their Original Craft Barbecue Sauce, which is one of my favorites and I find it great for all types of meat. I decided to get the City Sampler for dinner, which includes brisket, a sausage link, carved turkey breast, and pulled pork. I had coleslaw and fried okra as my sides. I thought I was also supposed to get Texas Toast; however, they left it off my order. The turkey breast and sausage were outstanding. The turkey was moist and smoky-tasting -- this was my first time getting turkey here, and I am sure I will order it again. The sausage link was well seasoned and very flavorful. Like the turkey, I also had never had it here before, and plan to order it again. Although good, the brisket and pulled pork were a bit fattier and greasier than I'm used to getting here. I might be getting spoiled by all the great local barbecue joints in the Triangle area. City Barbecue's Fried Okra is always the BEST -- this trip was no different. Their slaw, however, was nothing special, definitely disappointing for a barbecue restaurant. I don't remember it being so bland before. Hopefully, it was just a so-so batch. My half-sweet/half-unsweet tea was very fresh and delicious. Tea and fountain drinks are at a stand in the dining room near the food pick-up area, along with silverware, plasticware, barbecue sauces, and other disposable service items. I sat at a group high-top table near the condiment area. The dining room is very clean and well kept. Overall, this was a better than average but not outstanding meal. The crew was friendly. The restaurant is nicely designed and clean. The turkey, sausage, and okra were excellent. I didn't get my Texas Toast, and the coleslaw was so-so. 2nd visit I had the brisket sandwich and ordered a 3 side meal- mac and cheese, bake beans and fries. The brisket was delicious. The Mac and cheese and baked beans were good. The fries seemed to have been sitting and never should've been placed in my order. They belong in the trash. At pickup the staff here wasn't busy at all. There wasn't much going on. I observed one staff lying over the counter. I'm not sure why these fries could not have been prepared fresh. This was unacceptable! read more

Was visiting Raleigh on a work trip and a colleague took us here for lunch as I had a hankering for some BBQ. I noticed three massive smokers as we walked in, which is always a good sign. They have a decent variety of meats to try and even more sides to complement them. I ordered the brisket, pulled pork, and turkey along with the beans and green beans. The lady at the front helped me and even offered for me to try the beans first, which was a nice gesture and solidified my choice as they were delicious! I made an Arnold Palmer with about 70% lemonade and 30% sweet tea which hit the SPOT, especially when paired with the savory profile of the meats and sides. I tried three of their sauces: Original, Swine Wine, and their Brush Fire. The Brush Fire was my by far my favorite, followed by the Swine Wine as both had great flavor profiles. The original was enjoyable, but nothing to write home about. The meats were flavorful, but all were on the dry side (especially the turkey) which admittedly was quite the let down and the reason why I'm giving this review 4 stars and not 5. The pulled pork was a bit on the salty side and the turkey didn't have a lot of flavor, so the sauces really came to the rescue. I'm not picky, so I enjoyed the food and the meal in general was still very satisfying but I did want to be honest in my assessment. A couple positives are the portions, which were generous, and the prices are quite reasonable to boot. Would definitely recommend this place if you want a quick BBQ fix, but would caution to keep your expectations to a minimum. read more

Had a great experience! Easy ordering and quick service with plenty of seating! Was on a business trip and this spot popped up as it was nearby the airport. The set up is similar to Panera, you order and pay then they call you when your order is ready. So easy! The menu was excellent and loved the drink selection (sweet tea was so good), it was recommended by the cashier to try the sliced turkey - wow it was so moist and I really liked the pulled pork too! I was thinking of the pulled chicken sandwich, but I asked about the 'Bama sauce and they said it was a creamy marinade. I wasn't feeling creamy so they said the could make a plain chopped chicken. It was a rainy day, but needing to run a couple of errands in the area, I stopped in. I'm a big fan of their chicken and turkey, but I decided to go a little different direction. The Not Sloppy Joe stood out since it has 3 meats: pulled pork, pulled ribs, and brisket. They chop the meats up, so they have the consistency of a sloppy joe. Then they mix that in a unique BBQ sauce, that was called chipotle peach, but I got a lot more of the heat than the sweet. Then crispy onions and pickle slices finish it off. The toasted bun was just strong enough to not completely fall apart, but the battle was serious for a while. The baked beans are pretty good, maybe a bit saucy for my taste, but I like that they add brisket! I also liked that the mac has several cheeses. I added a little firecracker sauce to it and it works if you like some heat! The restaurant was kept pretty clean during a busy lunch rush, and that's not always easy to do. I also like the large vats of unsweet tea, sweet tea, and lemonade and the variety of BBQ sauces to choose from. read more

Had the two meat sampler with two sides. For the meats, ordered the brisket and the chicken. For sides, got potato salad and Cole slaw. I found the brisket to be dry and chewy. The chicken was an odd pile of what looked like chicken salad. I don't think there was mayonnaise mixed in with the chicken, but the chicken glistened as if coated with some mayonnaise-type substance. It was off-putting. My dinner partner independently had the same impression: brisket was dry and the chicken had some mayonnaise-y appearance/texture that resembled a chicken salad. The potato salad was meh. The Cole slaw was good, not too much mayonnaise and a nice crunch. I liked the slice of toast that came with the platter. I will say the restaurant does have a nice variety of bbq sauces, from spicy/tangy to vinegary to sweeter side. The highlight of the meal was dipping the bread into the different sauces. Bottom line for me: I judge a bbq meal in part by how much I have to depend on the bbq sauces. In some joints, the brisket is moist and seasoned so no sauce is required. In this case, the brisket to me was dry and chewy and pretty tasteless - required lots of bbq sauce to provide both flavor and a moist feel. The cafe was closed at the museum so I ended up at City Barbeque as I hadn't been to the other location in a while. After the visit here, I remembered why. City Barbeque does not fulfill orders correctly. Had I remembered that, I would have checked my order before leaving. It wasn't busy at all and I didn't order much so I thought they could get the order right. I was wrong. Now the phone call to the restaurant was also disappointing. The phone number takes you to a call center somewhere not the actual restaurant. I was told I would need to get the City BBQ Rewards App to get the credit for the missing item. It seems they should be able to pull up the receipt and issue a credit to my credit card. After I insisted on my credit card getting refunded this was done but they needed the card number so I will closely be watching that as I don't trust this company. If you do carry out here, make sure to check your order before you leave. read more

This wouldn't be my first choice for bbq. I think most of the food just lacks seasoning and flavor. Mac and cheese needs much more seasoning. It just tasted bland. The fries are way too salty and crispy enough. Hush puppies were crispy but not flavorful enough. The nachos are pretty good, but not enough toppings/not layered which is a pet peeve of mine. Stopped in first time recently. The restaurant looked like it was a good place to get some good barbeque. Had been by there several times wanting to try it. Went in and ordered three meat plate. Was very disappointed, the price was too high for what you get "almost $25.00". The three "four inch long" pork ribs almost no meat "all bone", almost burnt, dry and tough. The two "four inch long" beef ribs were nothing but bones (no meat). The chicken "ok", nothing to brag about" a leg and thigh. The brisket ok, overdone, dry, flavor was ok, again nothing to brag about. The sides (mac & cheese) spiral noodles with melted cheese mixed in "run of the mill". The (bake beans) best thing I had to eat on the plate. Don't think I will be going back anytime soon (ever). read more

Recently I tried ordering from City BBQ for dinner and really enjoyed the quality of the food and prices. I ordered the sampler, with mac & cheese and a banana pudding as my 2 sides. I enjoyed everything. The serving size was enough to have lunch the next day. The brisket, turkey and pulled pork were all tender and moist. My favorite being the brisket. The Texas toast was fresh, toasted and soft. I enjoyed the Mac & Cheese made with cavatappi noodles instead of elbow. It gave it texture and the dish was not overly salty. The banana pudding was also very good, just too sweet with added sugars. There were so many side dishes on the menu to choose from. I would definitely order and dine in again. CBBQ is a chain and this particular restaurant is located on Lake Boone Tr. adjacent to Rex hospital. It is cleverly decorated and has indoor/outdoor seating. Predictably the menu has pork, chicken, beef items, and sides. I ordered the Nashville tenders (Spicy), fries, double mac&cheese. Treated myself to an Arnold Palmer with their freshly brewed tea and lemonade. it was the perfect libation paired with southern fare. Gwen and MK were very friendly, and hand delivered our meals to us. Good service. Meals are fairly priced with the option to get catered items. We have gotten take out here a few times and both times they were delicious. We have tried their sausage, brisket, pulled pork, Mac and cheese, hush puppies, collards, baked beans, corn pudding and Texas toast. All their meats are very good and we love the sauces that come with them. The cornbread was a little dry for my liking and the Mac and cheese wasn't our favorite. Overall, food is delicious. The most off-putting thing about this location though and why I docked a star, is because everytime we go, the outside area smells so incredibly bad,liked backed up sewage. You'd think as a store owner, you wouldn't want that smell around your restaurant and would call the city to do something about it. Whatever it is, I hope it goes away soon because sometimes I don't feel like picking up Togo because I don't want to experience the smell. read more

Nice spot. Prices are fair. I had brisket and pulled pork. Both were dry. They sprinkle some salty seasoning over top of the pulled pork to try to add extra flavor. All it did was create a crunchy texture and made it too salty. I wouldn't not come back, but it's not the best I've had. I think the 3.5 stars that this restaurant has is an accurate rating. read more

Overall I thought that it was just an okay experience. I have been to a different city barbecue (by southpoint in durham). That city barbecue was so much better than this one. It is a nice place to go if you want a good quick dinner of barbecue. As for prices, it is on the pricey side of normal barbecue places. It is bright, roomy, and very clean which is a great touch to have going in. The decorations are nice and it is very roomy inside. Now to the food: French fries and Mac and cheese - definitely the best sides here. Both are fantastic and worth getting. They are the OG sides but here they do make them very good. Hushpuppies - they were super over cooked and really hard to bite into, definitely will skip next time. City Sampler - You got three meats and it seemed very small when brought out to us but as we ate we did fill up. It ended up being a good amount. The brisket was very greasy and a little tough. When it should fall apart in your mouth. Sausage was good and exactly what you would expect to get from it. I wish it was a little more special (if they had a twist on it). Smoked turkey - worth a try. It was not dry at all and did have very good flavor. Ribs - Extremely disappointed in the size of them. They had almost no meat, I do not know if we ended up getting the end side of the ribs and that is why. They were very dry and just no meat. The sauces!!! This is the one thing that I think makes city barbecue stand out compared to other fast food barbecue. They make home made sauces and my favorite is the texas one. It is a little spicier and vinegar based (how barbecue should be of course) and had phenomenal flavor. I definitely would dip everything in it if you go here. read more

City Barbeque is a nice place to go for a good quick dinner. Upon entering it is bright and roomy, You order at the front, wait for your food then seat yourself. We had the sampler platter which seamed really small for two but as we ate it was just enough. The sausage and brisket had good flavor. The smoked Turkey was very good (and I don't really like smoked Turkey) The bbq didn't have any flavor but you can go ask for different sauces.
