Just got my muffler replaced here. Was able to come in without an appointment so it's first come first served. Todd helped me and it took just under three hours so much sure you plan some time. They have a small waiting room with two tvs. It was $575 for replacement of two parts of the muffler. Unfortunately I did have to take it back due to a sound when going over bumps but I was able to bring it back next day and it was fixed! They are currently going thru renovations but very open! You can see your car getting repaired and downside is you can hear EVERYTHING. Plenty of parking in their private lot which takes up a whole corner in Covington. Would I come back for work? rating 0 stars ... made me hit one star to save the review took my 2015 jaguar xj to verify if in fact i needed to replace my catalytic converyer. . car running fine no issue. just a week before engine comes on . so they charged me 150 diagnose fee . ok then claimed they needed to look further...me being played says ok. now charges me 250.00 to search futher???? missed that flag. then they say something about my water pump which the pump was never the issue. wasn't have any issues. so they go on about oh yea it was the catalyttic converter quote some outrageous price. so iwent and i picked up my car. 2.23.26. took it in on thurs. 19th picked it fudged up 2.23.26 barley made it home car overheating crazy. had to stop once back in cincinnati get it towed. my car was driving just fine until they touched it . they did something...they made it into a worst problem. they jacked up my jaguar. i feel violated and cheated they took me for for close to 500.00 just for a diagnose and then damaged my jaguar talk about being used and taken advantage of. so now i to spend more money filing a small claims suit in kentucky. now thats another nightmare. horrible business...ihave nrver experienced anything like ever...with any dearlership mechanics auto shops...horrible violation. i am so upset and distraught. Great muffler shop that does excellent exhaust work for a reasonable price. They do other automotive maintenance as well, but are known for exhaust work. No appointment necessary, large staff of mechanics ready to go. They offer a shuttle service to a reasonable distance. Smiths is a no frills place. Inside is what you would expect from a 50 year old plus business. I have to say the service writers are knowledgeable and ready to help. I have been going to Smith Muffler since 2006. They are professional, accurate and keep you posted on all car expenses. There are two things I really like. First, you bring your car in the morning, and they will tell you to wait, return at the end of the day or wait for a phone call. They have never been wrong! Second, they handle my stress well. Two years ago, my 91 Honda Civic was only using 2 cylinders. I didn't believe them. They were kind and patient with me and insisted on running the test with me watching. When I was still a bit overwhelmed about what to do, they talked with my brother (a car mechanic). Great Fast Service While visiting Cincinnati my alternator failed. The AAA service truck driver suggested Smith as one of a couple shops that he felt did good work. They were amazing. My car was towed, checked out by one of the good Smith folks and my new alternator was in and we were on the road in LESS that TWO hours - and at a price several hundred bucks less than what was suggested on internet as average cost for my car. Given the circumstances of being from out of town, needing it in a hurry, etc. they could have jacked up the price ... and didn't. Mid February on a cold and rainy morning we were headed to the airport. Traffic was awful and then we hit the mother of all potholes in downtown Cinci. Crossed the bridge and got off the exit and the tire is got a huge hole. Saw Smith Muffler and pulled into their lot. They said they could fix the tire and we could leave the car there for a couple days. Called an Uber to take us to the airport, and 5 min later the Uber cancels. I tell my husband and the owner says no problem he would take us to the airport. He got us to the airport in time (at this point we were cutting it close!) and arranged for us to pick up the car after hours when we got back. Definitely recommend! read more

I have been to Smith Muffler and Brake several times since I moved to Northern Ky. Mostly muffler work for cars and trucks. So when my wife's Subaru Outback needed a Muffler we passed the CarX and Midas shops on the way to Covington. The News was not good and it got worse. It took 4 hours to diagnoses the problem and give us a price. It was obvious they were busy so we cut them some slack. $940 for a Y pipe and catalytic converter. With no other options or cheaper fix. It took 7 days to order the parts???? Seemed a little long to us while driving a loud car. Everyday they kept saying we'll call you. On the 7th day My wife called and Todd said you are next in line..... that is great except our car was not in the shop. So she dropped it off waited another 5 hrs to call them back to be told we were just getting ready to call you to say you are done and we close in 30 minutes. Smith muffler was a little light on service. Car is fixed we're $940 lighter. We'll probably go back but we will shop around more next time. Ooops her brake light just came on today. read more

Reasonable price and prompt service. Reason for only two stars is they did not use a torque wrench/bar on my wheel lug nuts. This is a short cut that was disappointing. Also was told at quote that the brake parts (pads/rotors) would be Wagner; they were not. Torquing the wheel lugs per mfg specs is standard procedure nowadays when reinstalling wheels at any other car service places I have used. I questioned why Smith was not using a torque bar on the wheels and really did not get a good answer other than we have been doing it this way for xx years. DON'T EVER USE THESE CLOWNS,, THEY ARE BORDERLINE CRIMINAL,,,THEY'RE A RIP OFF & THEY CAUSE MORE DAMAGE THAN THEY FIX!! I gave my car to Smith Muffler to repair engine mounts, they broke the air induction box in the process. They would not fix the damage and didn't want anymore to do with the issue. They failed to follow proper repair procedures for my vehicle. I needed the front brakes replaced, I instructed them to use the existing brake springs already on the car (original Jaguar) and not the cheap spare set in the trunk. After getting the car back I noticed they had used the cheap spare brake springs in the trunk and thrown out the original set that I told them to use. They didn't offer any compensation, their attitude was oh well,, too bad. I needed front suspension bushes replaced, they quoted $450 for all 5 bushes. They did 2 bushes in 1 hour and charged $330 (they couldn't do all the work in 1 day, as they did the O2 sensors too, so I had to bring the car back), then when I brought the car back to complete the remaining 3 bushes they wanted $650 instead of the remaining $120. They refused to honor the original quote of $450 for all 5 bushes. I don't know where they get their pricing from, but I've never heard of any mechanic charging $330 for 1 hours work. I also needed exhaust work done just two resonators deleted and new cats installed, all parts supplied by myself, these bozos quoted $900. I laughed and went to Flowtek Custom Exhaust and Auto Service and they did it all for $290. I had an exhaust pipe / Resonator pipe installed yesterday. After driving it home it started to make a rattle noise from the rear near the muffler. I took it back and they got me right in and found the issue and corrected it. The "Heat Shield " over the muffler area was bent down contacting the muffler and pipe they replaced. A very simple fix was done in just a few mins. My issue is with the Service Tech. He told me the good news on the simple fix, but he added.."It was not like that when I backed it out yesterday". These are some of the shiestiest b*stards I have ever met. I am a young woman in my 20s and the salesman completely lied to me to try to over charge me and take advantage of me because he assumed I know nothing about cars. He was right, but I do know how to shop and when I'm getting screwed. My 2010 Kia Forte was making noises when I used the brakes, and a friend recommended I go to them. They did look at the car immediately and told me I needed 2 front rotors, 2 calipers and break pads all in the front and it would cost $833. I said wow I was not expecting that I was hoping for about half the cost. He said my calipers were bent and everything was necessary. But also my back brakes were at 30%. That was way too much to pay on my POS car so I immediately picked it up. I got another recommendation to go to auto masters in Florence. I went there and they looked at my car and said I do need brake pads and rotors but my calipers are fine and they do not bend- lie #1 (about a $300 lie). Then said the back brakes are at 80% (lie #2). Out the door adding an oil change was $419. They provided excellent service and were honest and helpful. I recommend you go to auto masters in Florence and stay away from smiths!! read more

Judging from the positive reviews here, some people have had good experiences with Smith Mufflers and Brakes. Unfortunately, my experience was not so positive. I had recently relocated to Covington and as luck would have it, my car refused to start one morning this past September. Not knowing much about the mechanics in the area, and despite being warned against Smith by a friend and former Smith's customer, I figured I didn't have much choice and had the car towed to Smith's since it was close, and being so large a business, I figured it could be fixed pretty quickly. It turned out that I needed a new alternator, and while I knew that wouldn't be cheap, I was shocked when the total bill came to over $650. After the fact, I discovered that there were cheaper alternator options, but the Smith's technician didn't mention them. He claimed they would have to get the part from "northern Ohio". Later on, I found out the Autozone in Covington had an alternator for my car in stock and it ran about $150-160. The cost on my bill from Smith for the part was $300. When I went to pick up the car, the technician tried to sell me half a dozen other services, including an air filter. Not an expensive item, but at this point, I didn't want them doing anything else. He became aggravated with me when I said I'd take care of the filter later : "Really?!? Your car has to have this!" He then proceeded to put on the receipt in all caps that I refused the air filter. His attitude and manner of speaking were belittling. I figured I'd chalk this up to a bad decision on my part to go to Smith's and just find a different mechanic for future repairs. Fast forward to this past Friday night: my car stalled at a busy intersection in downtown Cincinnati. When I tried to restart it, there was a very strong smell of gas. I had the car towed to Firestone in Covington and the next day when I called, they informed me that the fuel line was knocked loose. I lost about a half a tank of gas. When I asked how the fuel line could come loose, the technician told me that fuel lines typically don't just come loose and that the line most likely was knocked loose when the alternator was replaced, since they are in close proximity. Of course, I don't think I could prove this now since I went to a different mechanic, and frankly, I don't want them touching my car again. Since the alternator was replaced, I've taken several long road trips. I could have broken down, alone, at any time. Like I said, that's great that others have had positive experiences, but I am of the opinion that maybe Smith has gotten a little too big, perhaps. They don't seem interested in finding affordable options for their customers or in doing consistently high quality work. My friend the former Smith's customer told me that she had them service her car for years without issue but then in the last few years, their quality had taken a nosedive. I guess with their volume of business, they just don't care when they do something wrong or not to the best of their ability. read more

They have always been timely and courteous and I've never felt as if I've been taken advantage of. They are very good about keeping you informed about the status, timeline, and cost of repairs; I've worked almost exclusively with Alan there, he is a very personable and knowledgeable individual and I feel as if their aim is to give you an honest repair at a reasonable price. We asked them if they started because we had got a better quote he said they had already started. An hour later one of the workers informs us they just got the part an are about to start. Well here is your 1 star earned fair & square shady dealings from a shady company. . . Excuse me I take that back its been over an hour and he said as soon as the part arrives they will start.update: We've been here four hours in the part still hasnt arrived had he informed us they didn't have the parts we would have got it done the next time but because they lied we ended up here for over 5 hours and counting. I'm constantly trying to find a mechanic that won't completely take advantage of me. I'm not completely sure that Smith has lived up to my expectations but they have been pretty consistent with service and I've been going there for years. I've had them work on brakes, exhaust and have almost exclusively been getting my oil changed there. Drop your car off early in the morning and they will have an estimate to you in several hours. Work can often be completed on the same day. When I was working downtown they offered drop off and pick up to my job which helped my maintain my transportation. Be aware if you are a non-smoker that the waiting area can be nearly intolerable. read more

The service counter can be a bit intimidating when you walk up with staff on the phone, printing service orders and talking to customers describing the rattle that occurs when they hit the brakes on a hill but they WILL get to you and all those fears will fade away. Crooks, liars and dishonest. Before going in, I checked my transmission fluid, the color and the levels. It was low and dark. After few hours they called saying the car is ready for pick up. We picked it up, drove somewhere private to check if the quality of their work. Alas to our dismay, the car was never touched. The transmission fluid was still low and still dark. We went back to get a refund. To our surprise these crooks insist they worked on the car. We were going to let them do every service on all our cars. But I'll be a fool to come back for any reason. ***ATTENTION ALL*** If there was an option for no stars that is what I would pick!!! I've been taking my car to Smith for about 2 1/2 years for oil changes and never went to another service center. As of my last oil change a week ago I've noticed small leaks and thought it was oil run off. I took it in today and they had actually stripped almost every thread out of the pan. I was told by the owner, "it's not my fault and it just happens". I disagreed as there are specs and procedures to tighten the bolt which I'm sure was not followed. He would not do a thing except make me pay $75.00 to fix there damage. Highly unprofessional or fair. I even asked to meet him in the middle and he said "how about $150.00 and then $75.00".
