Maybe, I'd give this place 3.5 stars. You'll know you'll see some sleek minimalistic modern designs when you enter just from seeing the SmashBurger sign in front of the establishment. Upon entering, you go up to the counter order your meal then find a seat and the staff will bring you your meal. My friend who was with me labelled this place "high class fast food". I ordered the single bacon smash with smash tots and my friend ordered the kids meal burger and fries. She like the taste of her cheeseburger and liked the fries. The bacon smash is delicious. It's a good, solid burger. My only complaint is that for $6 I'd like a heftier burger like some of the other burger joints offer. The smash tots were good and greasy. The tots are made with rosemary, garlic, and olive oil. While eating, a staff member came up and asked how the food was-nice touch. So this was my first time even trying Smashburger, and it was very disappointing... I ordered the "Spicy Baja With Guac Burger" and was informed that they were out of guacamole, but they offered avocado as a substitute. This would have been fine until I received my order and saw the receipt attached to the bag, noticing they charged me extra for the avocado they used to cover for the missing guacamole. That, combined with the fact that the food here is barely on par with places like McDonald's and Wendy's guarantees that I will not be coming back. Also, they have signs all over indicating that masks are mandatory unless you're seated at a table, but this is not being enforced at all, as I watched quite a few maskless fools walk up to the counter and place orders, despite the MASKS REQUIRED sign right in front of their idiot faces. read more

Finally tried Smash Burger today. When i walked in i was promptly greeted by the staff. The lady at the register was nice and answered all my questions. The store and restrooms were clean. I ordered a single burger and smash fries. Everything cost $10. The sides are kinda high priced. The fries were good but I'd prefer a larger portion. $4 for fries is hard to swallow. We decided to come here for lunch on a Saturday. I won't lie, the reason why I haven't yet been here was because of all the bad reviews I saw on Yelp. I DID take into account how new the business was, so I just put them on hold. They weren't really busy. There was no line, the man at the counter was very helpful with telling us what was on the menu. He was also very patient since I was asking lots of questions. We ended up ordering a kids cheeseburger meal with a drink. It came with fries. I ordered a single patty smashburger with sauce, lettuce and tomato. I substituted pepper Jack instead of American cheese. Hubby ordered a truffle mushroom burger with onion hay stacks. Our food was brought to us (by the same man) in bags. Take out bags are now because of post Covid. Everything was good. The fries were seasoned with olive oil and Parmesan cheese. The burger was tasty. The smash tots and fries have a delicious flavor. The rosemary, garlic, and olive oil compliments the tots the best. No complaints there. The burgers are the issues. They are tiny. McDonald's size patties. Thin and dry. No flavor. No juice. Dead and boring. The bun is okay. That one little burger will cost you $5.39. Want to add some shoestring onions? That'll be another $1.29. So in total one burger can cost you $6.68 and you don't get a drink or side with that price. $3.59 is the price for a regular size tots or fries with the SmashBurger seasoning. We walked up, ordered, paid, and waited for our food to be brought to our table. Our burger and fries came out, but we were almost done eating and still no milkshake. Had to inquire about it and turns out they had completely forgotten. The burger itself was really tasty! We split the double bacon cheeseburger with fries and a milkshake. I loved that the burger was super cheesy. Fries were just ok. Why only a 3-star rating (well 3.5 rounded down): it was pretty expensive for what it was. Our total was about $15! The most conflicting experience I've ever had with a restaurant. We got there an hour before closing. We ordered, got our drinks, and sat down. We kept waiting for our name to be called and thought we heard it at one point but another guy got the food so we just thought we had heard wrong. Several minutes later that same guy comes back and tells the girl at the counter he grabbed the wrong order. That order turned out to be ours. The girl sits the bags on the back counter without communicating what has happened to anyone. After several minutes another girl comes and asks what the bags are and the first girl tells her the order needs to be remade. Finally she gives the ticket back to the kitchen to remake the order. None of this is communicated to me or the person I'm with. I only know because I watched the entire thing happen. We wait and wait until about 15 mins til closing and finally get our food. The person I'm with goes to refill their drink before we go but uh oh! - the drink machine isn't working. My friend goes to tell the girl behind the counter and she can't be bothered to take out her Airpods, just keeps saying "huh? what?". Turns out they've already shut off the drink machine and it's not even closing yet. My friend says they were given attitude for asking about it from the other girl that was back there and when he asked to speak to a manager he was told "they're too busy right now". As someone who has works in customer service, I know that's not an excuse. We left with a really awful impression of the place, and I did not have high hopes for the food. Then we got home and ate our food and omg, it was so damn good, probably the best burger and tater tots I've had in Chesapeake, if not ever, so fresh and just delicious. Because of that, I will definitely be giving Smashburger another chance. I'm hoping maybe the service will be better earlier in the day not so close to closing. I was given a BOGO entree for here so we decided to try it not. It was in the midst of last minute Christmas shopping so it was pretty busy. The inside was pretty small but manageable. The service was lacking as the cashier who greeted us had an RBF (resting bitch face) and didn't seem happy to be there. We stepped to the side and looked at the menu and put our order in. I created my own burger with the spicy chipotle bun, smash sauce, and a fried egg with most of the toppings. I got the smashfries on the as well. He woofed this down in minutes along with his tater tots which were also on the smaller portion size. I had more than enough fries so I was able to share those or otherwise, he may have left feeling only somewhat full from what could (and honestly should) have been a bigger meal! I also decided to try a milkshake and appreciated that they let me pay with the rest of the order but not make it until I had finished my meal so I could take it to go. They quickly made it for me upon request when we were about ready to leave. I had the chocolate shake and thought it was tasty and well-made. I read other reviews and saw that they use premium Hagendaz ice cream which could account for the good taste! TLDR: only come to this place if you have a LOT of patience and don't really care how your food turns out ... We waited over 30 minutes for our food, and when it came out it wasn't even hot. It must have been sitting over there the majority of the time we waited because my fries were soggy and cold, my burger wasn't even made correctly and it was like warm at best... I was very hungry so I ended up eating it instead of waiting however long for a new one to be made, but there was definitely a lack of attention to detail and service at this location. I visited this location between the lunch and dinner rushes so keep that in mind. You walk in and the set up is perfect in the sense that you wait in line to the left up against the wall to order. It is separated by a divider so that guests dining in aren't being disrupted if a long line forms. The hanging menus are huge behind the registers but the font is pretty small so you can't really see them until you are next in line to order. There are a lot of options though! You can guess by the name that this is a burger joint but SmashBurger has subtle twists including options for a chicken burger, turkey burger, and black bean burger! I love the variety. They also have a few different versions of fries including sweet potato, smash fries, and regular French fries. The variety of this place really differentiates it from other places like Five Guys. It is a little pricey so that can add up if you come in with a family of four but they do offer military discount and I believe first responders as well. When I visited I ordered my food to go. It took about five minutes for three burgers and two orders of fries (It wasn't all for me). I appreciated the big bag they gave me which had smaller, individual bags inside separating my food. Nothing is worse than a food place trying to stuff everything inside a medium bag and fries spilling everywhere. I do think I'll visit again because of the variety of burgers but I'll try to avoid the busy times. I think my visit went very smoothly but at 4pm on a Sunday I wasn't expecting it to be hectic. P.S. The burgers are tasty, but so are Steak-N-Shake's. The difference? Price. Smashburger is way overpriced for what you get. You can spend half the amount at Steak-N-Shake and be just as satisfied. I will, however, give Smash props for their milkshakes--they are EXCELLENT and every bit worth the $4.45. If you dine in, they will even give you the extra milkshake in a separate container . . . and there is ALWAYS extra milkshake, AND they use Hagen-Daas ice cream so you know they're serving legit shakes. My first time visit was with my sister and cousin, we all added their Smashburger App and got a (buy fries and a drink and get a burger free.) I'm really not a burger person, but when I crave for a juicy burger you just have to have one. And the burger pattys here are made fresh not frozen, which means it's juicy and good! I always get the same thing every time I come here, it's that yummy. I have had smashburger a lot! I have had it up north years ago, and I even ate it in Kuwait where they had an awesome Kuwaiti Burger with Kuwaiti fries. This new location is still good to me. I like that crisp of the burger and I love their house sauce for their burger. Their smash fries are awesome and so are their Haystack onions. Shakes are yummy too. However...I don't feel their food is worth an upscale price...I think it should be fast food prices. The food service isn't that great tho...they take a very long time...very unorganized...they will bring you your food but not your shake...and then you will be done with your food and you still gotten your shake or your kids meal...the cashiers aren't welcoming...and these people are not quick to bus tables. If you read my reviews you know that I love a good burger. Despite a couple of visits now, I haven't found it at Smashburger. My first visit here was a carry out order. I was on my way to work and decided to grab something to go. I walked about 30 minutes before closing and the place was empty except for the staff. There was about 5-6 employees just hanging out. I reviewed the menu and not seeing anything that I wanted I opted to 'craft my own burger' as the menu says. As always, I selected my benchmark, a variation of the bacon cheeseburger. The lady behind the counter asked if I wanted it large? Sure go ahead I said. Then on to the choices. First the bun, Wheat. Then the cheese, Sliced aged cheddar. Third the toppings, Lettuce, Onion, Pickles & Tomato. 4th, Sauces, Yellow Mustard. Last but not least the extras, Applewood smoked bacon. I added a large fry to that as well. Price came out to about $13 for these 2 items. This had better be good. I selected a table close to the counter while waiting for my meal to be prepared. After a short wait an employee brought the bagged meal out to the table I was sitting at and off to work I went. I'd say about 10 minutes passed between getting the meal and arriving at my desk at work. I unwrapped the burger wow, what a greasy mess. First thing I noticed was that their "big burger" was a huge puck that was larger than the bun, sticking out all around it. Second, the burger was so greasy that basically the bottom bun had mostly disintegrated into a multi-grain mush. Last but not least, the large fry was a joke. If you compare Smashburgers large fry to say a McDonald's large fry, it costs a dollar more and it comes in a smaller container. I found the burger to just middle of the road. There's nothing special here, certainly not enough to warrant the price they're charging. I did give them another chance, and on the 2nd visit I ate in, however the result was the same. Man if it wasn't for the food I would give this place a 1 star only because the service was a 4 thumbs down. We were greeted by the cashier with her angry lookin face. Not very welcoming. The waitress who brought our food to us just kind of slammed it on our table and walked away. We didn't get an "enjoy" or "let me know if you need anything," none of that. The wait for food was OK. What an experience I had tonight! Take out the popcorn!! Let's begin. So, I was excited to see Smashburger had turkey burgers on their menu and even more sweet potatoes fries! So I'm trading the apron for some burger take out! There was a pretty decent line at 8:15pm and the restaurant was pretty packed. But it gave me time to look over the menu since it's essentially "make it your way". Hubby and I placed our order and found a table to wait. It was dirty but we figured it will be a quick minute and we're not touching anything so we are good. About 5 mins in, we realized NO ONE in the restaurant had their food! It's looking really suspicious here. The table behind me was already waiting 1 hour! Half of them had their order but the other guy didn't. I told him they must have lost his order, he went up and they sure did! While the rest of us patrons were waiting for our food, we were entertained by a disgruntled worker who was fired earlier and the managers (who were the cooks) go at it in the middle of the restaurant! I had front row seats, I guess sitting at the dirty table paid off. But the manager couldn't take this to the back? At first you didn't really know there was "beef" (lol since it was a burger joint I wanted to throw that word in) between them but the fired worker had his immature hype man of a friend egging him on so it went bad real fast! The Police was called, the workers at the register and kitchen was looking and laughing and goofing around as this was going on instead of continuing to serve the customers. One of the managers was crying, everyone was hungry waiting on their food, workers were confused and dazed. It was just bad (in Trump's voice) just bad! Even though it was good entertainment, I was hungry, it was late & after 40 mins of waiting for our take out, I had enough. I asked the girl up front where is our food and she said the food is at a stop right now because the burgers were cooked by the manager, who is dealing with the disgruntled employee. Huh? Really?! The manager finally kicked the worker and his friends out! So I went to the manager and told him that everyone has been waiting for an hour or longer for their food. I proceeded to tell him, he carried the situation with the employee unprofessionally to have it out in the open, the kitchen should not go unmanned without a cook, he had unprofessional untrained employees and after 1 week of opening, this was unacceptable. Hubby said he looked like he was going to start crying again! And when the police comes, they're going to have me arrested too! Well I had a long day too! And After spending $20 for two burgers and 2 fries, this is unacceptable. Fast forward.... got our food home, it looked good and taste good. Sweet potato fries with the garlic rosemary was the best! Forgive my ignorance, but I knew there was on in Richmond, but other than that, I never really knew about them. That is until hearing the hype that they were opening in Chesapeake. People were eating, no one in line, so that was a good sign that I wasn't going to be waiting long. I ordered the traditional Smashburger and their signature fries to go. It took exactly 10 minutes to get my order, so it was the typical time for a made-to-order burger joint. The staff was very friendly, no goofing off, and professional. I was impressed. As for the food, I wasn't really that impressed. Don't get me wrong, the food was good, but my expectations were In and Out/Five Guys good. I felt like this was more on par with Steak and Shake. A $12 meal should be on par if not better than Five Guys, and this missed the mark. With that said, the burger was a nice and juicy, medium well cooked patty, and the fries were good. It was a good meal, just not $12 good! So is this on my return list? Maybe if I'm in the Greenbrier area. When you order they give you a number as you find a seat and they deliver it to your table. It had a shake shack vibe. I had ordered the Classic SMASH burger but with turkey and added sliced avocados because you are also able to create your own burger, they ask you if you want to make it a combo and what side, of course I ordered fries but they do have an option of fried pickles, tots, or veggie frites. My husband ordered the triple decker with tots which was the special for the day. Each day there's a different special. We then received our order and I honestly thought the burger would be bigger but the taste did not disappoint so it didn't matter the size. Let me start by saying that Smashburger is in competition with Five Guys, not Burger King. Both atmosphere and price are in the same realm as Five Guys. I had the Double Bacon Smash. It was juicy -- actually dripping juices -- hot and tasty. The toppings were fresh and it was delicious. The menu is more like a restaurant in that they offer pre-designed sandwiches -- classic, avocado-bacon, mushroom -- with standard toppings. Additional toppings are available at additional prices. I suspect you can substitute certain toppings, like switching the type of cheese, without an extra charge. The service at this location was friendly and efficient. read more

I use to love this place . Service has gone down hill it took 10 minutes to order girl had no clue then order totally wrong got french fries in stead of onions strings wife asked for sauce twice to no avail. no tomato or lettuce or oinons which i asked for on my burger , And they owner seemed lost . First time today. To be honest, I wasn't impressed with the burger. It seemed a bit small to me, I prefer a thick juicy slab of meat instead of a flat flavorless piece of meat......Sad to say, I prefer a Wendy's burger than this. Smash Fries were the only thing that would want me to return. Garlic truffle fries with a burger, can't beat that. The egg-bun was pretty good but like I mentioned the burger itself was pretty small. Would I ever return? Maybe. Do I plan to return in a few days. I doubt it. I will give this place another try but I have no clue when. read more

I met up with my husband here for lunch because it's really close to my job and I've heard many people talking about it. We both got a burger, fries & drink. We paid $23 for two single patty burger combos. Ok so here's the pros and cons: Pros - fast and friendly. The food came out super fast and was delivered to our table outside - several options. You can choose a signature burger or create your own - healthy options Cons - I really wanted to try the smash fries with my meal combo, but was told that wasn't an option. I'd have to pay a la carte for fries and drink. That'd be close to another $4 just to have special seasoning on the fries. - the burger quality was not up there with comparable restaurants such as mooyah and five guys but has similar pricing All in all, decent place but they need to make some changes if they want to compete. read more

Let me preface this by saying I am not a fan of fast food. I was hoping this place was on a five guys type level. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger with fries and drink for about $14. I would say this burger was more McDonald/burger king quality than five guys. And for the cost, I expected much better. The fries were nothing exciting.
