Darn good food. We moved to Manhattan Beach about two months ago and the joke already is that Sloopy's should have a frequent customer reward program designed just for us. We possibly eat there 2 to 3 times per week. Their breakfast is amazing foodie quality cuisine, all their food is, actually. We enjoy all meals there. Salmon is lovely as are their Tuesday burger specials and amazing desserts. Try their mushroom scramble! Their gourmet espresso drinks seal the deal for me. Came here for lunch and had the fresh quinoa salad with tofu. The quinoa is actually soaked for 7 days, rather than cooked, so it's firm rather than the usual soft quinoa. The salad came with lots of tomatoes and a tasty balsamic dressing. Yum! The ambiance is adorable, with street-side seating for sunshine and a glimpse of the ocean, or shaded patio seating with lots of orchids for a feeling of serenity. Service was friendly and fast! The inside is like a cozy clean greenhouse with a fire pit and worth checking out. I don't typically eat a lot of meat and my options aren't always satisfying. I really like this place. There was a period of time when they turned lunch time into table service, (everyone on one bill, which was a huge PITA) but now they they went back to order-at-counter they are on my A-list again. The day was a bit cloudy but my buddy, Alfred, was in town for work. We said, what the heck, let's take him to an oldie but goodie. Sloopy's is in the heart of Manhattan Beach. It is located on Highland, the main street cutting through the residential and shopping area of Manhattan Beach. The inside of Sloopy's looks like a cabin you would crash at after a fun day of hiking in Yosemite or Yellowstone. There was a fire pit to warm the dreary day away. It is a family-friendly place to have lunch or dinner with the kids or a place to drop by to have a beer with a friend. The atmosphere is laid back and easy-going. I ordered the Mushroom & Swiss burger. Boy, the burger was pink and juicy. The flavors just melted in your mouth. It comes with fries on the side. That was the best burger I have had since Slater's 50/50 and is much less expensive.. Two pluses in my book. And, they have been good for years. The third plus to make a franchise eatery in my book. The menu consists mainly of sandwiches and burgers. It is pretty much regular diner fare. The service is pretty much self-service. You order as you walk into the door. The staff is very friendly and helpful. There are daily specials but since this is a comfort food place for a great price. Just go with what you like. I will definitely have this again on my regular lunch runs in the following days, weeks, months, and maybe years! LOL Enjoy! read more

Sloopy's is an interesting place. They are quite consistent in their pros and cons. Pros: 1) Wait staff is nice and reasonably attentive 2) They are open until 10 PM 3) Their milkshakes are AMAZING 4) They have a few outdoor tables Cons: 1) Their food is mediocre - we had one good burger and onion rings out of four or five visits 2) It smells funky in their dining room. How a lot of rain could cost this restaurant a lot of money, but also make it flourish. The dinning area is broken down into two sections. One is inside, the other is outside-sort of. Because of the small building the back dinning room feels like you are inside, but are actually outside. The entire restaurant is covered with plants and flowers and random garden decorations; thus making it feel like you are at grandma's old patio. But then there on the wall of the outside area is a digital television. I asked the waitress what they did when it rains and they cover it up with plastic and hope it doesn't get ruined. So if it rains hard enough the TV might be a goner, but those plants will sure be happy. The tables are a bit awkward. Poles holing them up are positioned in such a way that you either have to straddle it or confine your legs between them. As for the food, I have always gotten the Jalapeno Burger. Nothing too amazing, but still delicious. The fries were warm and salty. I ordered blue cheese dressing on the side, and it didn't have that strong cheese taste. The shakes are wonderful. There is much to choose from and boy are they thick. It takes a lot of work to suck one of those things down, which I like. This place is quirky and showcases a wide variety of food options. But much like the ambiance, the menu isn't that focused, and though that might hinder them in some respects, it does show charm and originality. read more

I used to enjoy coming here but the last two times were TERRIBLE, I'm so sorry to say! About 2 months, the husband and I ordered fish entrees. He ordered the Mahi, Mahi salad and I ordered take-out: Teriyaki Salmon. The fish tasted disgusting and old...like old frozen fish. Those entrees are not cheap either and I picked at the rice that came with mine and my husband bared down and ate his meal. The teriyaki sauce was not even good... Totally not cool. I even commented on their facebook page, but no response. I didn't feel like a call was necessary. Last night, we ordered take-out again. I'm prego and anemic so need my leafy greens. Husband called and asked if the chinese chicken salad was iceberg lettuce. The girl asked someone and said she didn't think so. We asked if we could sub for spinach or romaine and she said no. We get the salad and guess what? A big plate of chopped iceberg lettuce. I called and complained. The girl was unresponsive and barely said an I'm sorry. I asked, do I need to call back again and speak with a manager and she said yes. Total lack of customer service or ability to handle a complaint. Came in late night on a weekday. Food was good, service ended up being good. Ordered the cheeseburger. Was good, nothing to write home about and I always find it strange when a place puts mustard and not ketchup on a burger. Only reason that they lost a star is because 90% of the menu features cracked pepper mayo and I hate mayo. Since all of the sandwiches have it, it just guarantees the it will come out dry if you don't like mayo. Service was a little rough at first but the waitress warmed to us and it ended up being a nice time. Ok, so you guys might start thinking I'm bipolar right now, because I am writing yet another review about this place. I decided to give Sloopys another chance even if they took away my salad, so I dragged my friend there to have a late night snack yesterday .They were about to close when we got there at 9pm, but the owner was there and told us we were more than welcome to stay and eat by the fire. When we placed our order we started to talk to the waitress and she was soooo friendly and nice. We ended up talking till we got the food, and she was just so happy even if we made her stay later. I have never seen her there before, but they made a good choice when they hired her. I'm all about service, and I am giving them 5 stars because they let us stay even if they were closed, and THAT my friends is what I call excellent service! To break out my review: Ambience: 3.5 stars (for having a living jungle around me while dining) Service: 3.5 stars (Stephanie was awesome) Food: 2 stars (protein overcooked) One thing to bear in mind, a lot of reviews are talking about "consistency" being a problem, so perhaps they were having an "off night". We were looking for something simple tonight, so we headed down with the intent of burgers and beer. We live down in the Venice area, so it is a nice drive along the ocean to get here. It is located right as Vista del Mar becomes Highland Ave in Manhattan Beach. Ambience: The restaurant is kinda cool...I won't deny that. It has a nature-rich theme, and there are plants everywhere. I have to give mad props to the gardener who maintains a living jungle, in which people eat food :). Orchids are fairly fragile, yet they seem to flourish at each table and in high traffic areas between the kitchen and upper seating area. I also like the fact that they had outdoor seating. In retrospect, I kind of wish we had eaten outside. When we got there, I wasn't expecting live music. Don't get me wrong...it's a nice touch, in the right sized restaurant. The fact is though, the dining area in Sloopy's is a tad bit small. Combine that with tons of wood surfaces, means there is a bit of echo and it was LOUD. In the same respect, the jazz was good. I wished I called ahead to see how loud it was going to be, as we kinda wanted a quieter meal, so we could have a conversation. My mistake ;). Service: Stephanie seems like she is well known in this restaurant, and for good reason. She was basically taking care of every table, including a 7-10 top up front. She was still friendly and was on top of keeping our drinks refilled. Menu: WOW...you guys have one hell of a menu. It is kind of all over the board though. Burgers + Sushi Rolls + Breakfast + Salads + Sandwiches + desserts. It seems like it would be a lot for your team to manage and maintain consistency in all products...especially since the kitchen didn't seem large either. Food: I was disappointed. I saw all of these 4 star yelp reviews and was expecting better :(. I had the Seared Ahi Salad, my partner had a plain burger with fries. The fries were decent, but the burger and Ahi were overcooked :(. The burger was ordered medium, it arrived well done. The Seared Ahi was served around medium, even though it should have been a cold red center. If you've ever had Ahi served medium, it is a little strange. First of all...it isn't very appetizing :(. Second of all, as a delicate protein, it gets a strange texture. Also, given that Ahi is delicate...you have to be careful what type of oil and whatnot you use for searing. I don't know if it was burger grease that got on it or if it was cooked in butter, but it was a little greasy (for a super lean protein) and it tasted like butter or burgers...it was hard to tell. Also, it appeared that there were only sesame and honey wheat buns available for burgers. Those are kind of odd options, that are not universally loved. Have you considered perhaps a simple Brioche Bun? Tastes great and super simple. It also looks great on a plate ;). Tips to the Restaurant: * Consider reducing your menu to something more manageable. When patrons complain about consistency, it usually means you are not able to effectively manage your menu. With so many items, your food costs must be off the charts. Beyond that, your chefs are all over the board trying to make everything good, but it usually doesn't end up that way. * Cohesion...it's a thing. If you wanna be a burger place...be a burger place. It seems like your menu is all over the board and you try to be everything to everyone. If the items on the fringe of your menu are mediocre...that's not good for you or your customers. * Oil Choice is also a thing. The primary reason that a seared fish makes it to your patron overcooked...is probably because you are cooking with an oil that burns at too low of a temp. Therefore you can't get your cook surface hot enough to sear fast, without overcooking the rest. * Avoid non-neutral oils for cooking delicate fish. Again, I don't know if it was burger grease or butter, but the Ahi was greasy and didn't taste the way it is supposed to, because it picked up an oil flavor. It's a delicate protein...be nice to it or don't have it on your menu :/. The TL;DR: I really WANTED to like it. It seems like a cool little place. The food didn't cut it though. It was just "eh". It wasn't particularly bad or good. Unfortunately for Sloopy's, there are tons of FANTASTIC restaurants in the LA area, which makes it hard to justify giving them a second chance :(. read more

I absolutely love this place! I am a vegetarian and my boyfriend is a meat eater, and this place can satisfy both of our different taste pallets. I always order either the kale salad which has a strawberry vinaigrette which is amazing! Or the tree hugger sandwich :) The staff is always friendly and very helpful. Some nights bands play which makes the night exciting. But what is my most favorite is the scenery , I feel like I'm eating outside :) gorgeous orchids everywhere. :) read more

Came upon this place randomly, and I am glad I stopped by! I loved the interior of Sloop's there many plants hanging from the walls and beautiful flowers on the table. There is also this huge fire pit in the middle of the restaurant. Their menu is really big, and so it was a challenge narrowing down what to order. Veggie sandwiches, burgers, grilled fish, the special that night was trout mmmmm. I ordered the Tree Hugger sandwich with coleslaw. Our table also shared fried zucchini, a kale salad, and a mac and cheese. The food was very delicious and tasted fresh, I loved all the veggies in my sandwich, and their coleslaw was crunchy and had a bright flavor to it (It wasn't mayo based). My friends ordered the shrimp basket and the seafood risotto. The risotto was amazing, rich, creamy, and just enough garlic in the sauce. I came on a Tuesday night, and it was not crowded, so I loved the atmosphere. Our server was really friendly and checked in on us often. I will definitely be coming back here, to try other things!! Sloopy's is a classic spot I grew up with. Their shakes and fries were always the best. I hadn't been in a little while so I went the other day and it's now a full service restaurant which is cool. Our server was great but the shake wasn't as good and not as big as it used to be. I ordered the burger medium rare and it was soooo rare in the middle, basically not even cooked and cold plus the fries were not really seasoned this time. I had a couple bites of the burger but really couldn't eat it like that so I took it home and cooked it myself so i wouldn't waste it lol . A hidden secret this place is...the exterior is not interesting at all, but walk in and...it is TRUE AMBIANCE. Festive, sunny, charming and pretty with a warming fire pit in the center of the main floor, tons of plants and flowers, sky light and much more! As for the food, correctly stated...fairly simple and good. They have beer and wine too which is always a plus. I had the steak and eggs which was a large portion and it was pleasantly tasty. I believe my friends had the burger and some other sandwich which they thoroughly enjoyed. I am definitely going back...I enjoyed my experience. Staff was friendly but the place can take a while to get your food if its busy which it is on weekend after 11am so be prepared to wait a few. Where to begin. Got this food delivered by postmates. I ordered the veggie Benedict with my egg poached. When I opened the box, it was a mess, eggs in my salad, nothing on top of the bread. Whatever, it happens with delivery. There was a liiiiittle bit of hollandaise sauce smeared on the side of the box which is the best part of a Benedict honestly. When I cut through the eggs, nothing ran out, both cooked all the way through. Come on guys. If you're going to offer this item, do it correctly. The bread was so hard to cut through it broke my plastic knife which I had to go get from chipotle because there were no utensils or napkins. The salad had a few old pieces in it. The salad dressing was bomb. But all in all, terrible. read more

After a nice day at the beach, I sometimes go to Sloopys for lunch. Parking can be a bit of a pain because there is only metered street parking, and sometimes there are no spots to be found. Once you are inside though, you are transported into a really cool indoor / slightly outdoor cafe oasis. At the front you can place your order and then they will call you to pick up your food when it's ready. Near the front is the inside portion of the cafe, which has a large fire pit that is usually on. All of the tables are unique natural wooden tables, which usually have beautiful orchids on them. At the back you can chill out in the unroofed section and get some sun and fresh air. The food here is pretty reasonably priced and good. The chicken soup and arugula salad are one of my favs. The burgers and sandwiches with fries are always up to par. The smoothies are decent. All around, you pretty much can't go wrong with the food here. The best thing about this place though is its really chill and unique ambience. I really haven't been to another cafe quite like Sloopys. read more
