I really liked the large open space interior. I went during my lunch break and though I made a rather bizarre seating selection, I really enjoyed my avocado toast! (I sat in an armchair at a low table that may have made more sense for happy hour). It wasn't packed at all when I went around noon. My avocado toast totaled to about $7-$8 (before tip) and filled me up. It did kind of turn into more of an avocado, egg and greens salad since it was so loaded, but I didn't mind. Definitely going back to try some other toasts! (The menu has more than just toast though). read more

Inexpensive for pretty fancy toast. Our strawberry toast was a bit on the dry side with an abundant amount of the jelly/jam type spread. It would be good for those with a sweet tooth. The cinnamon toast with sautéed apples, pecans and cheese espuma looked incredible. The toast was toasted just enough. But the apples soaked in cinnamon glaze and the bitter cheese didn't seem to complement each other too well. More pecans may help. The lone bartender/barista/server/bus boy was very nice and pretty attentive for being pretty stretched with the about a dozen customers all around. He did handle it pretty well. The atmosphere was nice and warm. It looks like it could be the trending after work spot for drinks vs an early morning breakfast spot. read more

Now I understand the comments regarding the dark lighting. It's not bad, the setting is intimate enough, I think it's different because brunch places are generally brighter and more open. Nevertheless, the atmosphere was great! The staff was knowledgeable and attentive without being overbearing. My friend and I started with the Burrata and eggplant as an appetizer on the recommendation of our waitress. It was so delicious. The bread, which is baked in house was crispy and chewy, a great complement to the eggplant sauce, which was positively delightful. I am a fan of eggplant, but was pleasantly surprised when you really couldn't taste the "eggplant" flavor at all. The combination of tomatoes/spices and the melted cheese on top was great! There were 6 triangles of bread, so my friend and I both had 3. At $8 total, so $4 each, this was definitely worth trying. We were then served our Beef&Egg and Avocado Toast. The beef tartare had a very smooth flavor, a great combination of sweet and savory. And the Avocado with sprouts had a bit of a kick to it with some red pepper flakes, but I felt the flavor was a little bland. Eggs were both served poached and the yolk was great bringing all the flavors together. Unfortunately, I would have preferred my eggs slightly more well done, so I wish we were offered to customize our order a little (also with the bread for each toast), but it was fine as is. We came for coffee and toast and were not disappointed. The brioche was a nice thick piece for $3 with plenty of berry/plum jam and a WAY TOO BIG mini crock of butter. The brioche was already buttered but they gave more and both the bread and butter needed salt. They said the jam was berry but it definitely had plums or other brown fruit in it. The decaf cortado (espresso with a tiny shot of hot milk) was smooth and had a nice little white foam heart on top. The cappucino had a white foam multi-heart on it. Heard the staff say they are changing menus soon. Good location close to the Ogilvie Transportation center. If around fir drinks or dinner would stop in again. read more

I came to Slightly Toasted for lunch and I found my new favorite. Aly helped me with the menu in recommending the different menu items good for sharing. First from the "Shareables", we ordered the Garlic Pretzel Knot and I've never had anything like this. It was very flavorful. The mustard really put it all together, and the buratta on top.... It was perfect. Then we decided to order a burger to split, so we ordered the ST Burger, it was very good. Definitely would come here again for the burger. We also ordered the Avocado toast, my favorite. It was very fresh and a good amount of flavor. Truly appreciated that. Also, the bacon and egg toast was really good. The sourdough bread with both of the toast was perfect. Just the toast alone, is a great reason to come here for breakfast, lunch, or even dinner. Definitely adding this to my favorites list. Wandered in the other day for lunch on a Wednesday with a bunch of business friends. Got seated immediately - this place is pretty low key at lunch. Good for lunch time conversation - the room works well for this. I've only been here before for happy hour when it can be packed and tough to talk. Totally different and civilized at lunch. Our table had a variety of well composed salads. The Bibb salad with peaches and green goddess dressing was exceptional. The whole grain salad also got great reviews. We started with the Chef's Board selection of meat and cheeses. This had something for everyone and was a nice way for the group to get things kicked off. Finally, and perhaps, most importantly, the bar is open during lunch. When one of our group decided it was a cocktailing lunch Slightly Toasted was happy to oblige. Their Liquid Lunch program begins at 11am and features $6 Old Fashioneds, so what's not to like? read more

What a quiet and quant location. Extremely cozy. I arrived with coworkers today and was immediately greeted. Waitress was attentive and constantly filled our water glasses. I ordered the HMS (Hot Meat Sandwich) which is pretty much Braised Short Rib with pink coleslaw. YUMMMMYYYYYY!!! The chips taste like they're homemade which is a plus. What a convenient location to have a cup of coffee, a quick drink, or a delicious breakfast in record time. As I waited for my train, I was able to sit down with a delicious latte and bacon and egg toast. The egg was cooked to perfection with a gooey center that drizzled over crunchy toast melted down with cheese and crispy bacon. The combination of chives, red pepper and bacon was a flavorful explosion. It was such an indulgent breakfast on the go! All of it ~$11. There are other options including avocado toast and pb&j toast for others who have dietary restrictions. You won't be sorry you stopped in. Loved this place! Great ambiance, delicious food, and fantastic drinks. Everyone who was working was extremely friendly, kind and helpful. The Becky berry drink was delicious! My friends and I had a small birthday happy hour gathering there and it was great for our small group. We ordered some food and everyone agreed that it was all delicious. PLUS they serve breakfast food all day!!! I had the breakfast sandwich while everyone else had burgers. $4 for a delicious biscuit breakfast sandwich is a deal (especially for West loop area)! I grew up with an English mother, so toast served a variety of ways speaks to my way of life. I was slightly disappointed to find that my kale salad hit the mark more than my simple buttered toast. While a large piece, my toast was 100% cold and a bit on the bland side even with the butter and jam. You cannot serve cold bland toast at a restaurant that's all about toast... The concept is intriguing, the whiskey list is surprisingly impressive, but the food is underwhelming at best. Slightly Toasted was not what I expected.. It felt like a whiskey bar located in the lobby of a corporate building, that just happens to also serve coffee, toasts, sandwiches, and shared plates. They offer an exceptional selection of both standard and hard-to-find bourbon, rye, scotch, and Japanese whisk(e)y options. Anything ranging from Very Old Barton to Pappy Van Winkle, with Nikka and Lagavulin in between. Although their pours are relatively pricey, they offer 50% off whiskey (neat or on the rocks) on Monday's - most limited options are excluded. On the other hand, the food was just average. The ST Burger had all the right ingredients (caramelized onions, jalapeno aioli, bourbon pickles..) but ultimately wound up being fairly flavorless. The Chicken Bahn Mi had some decent heat, but the flavors weren't overly complex and fell a bit flat. Definitely worth swinging by for a drink after work, but head a few blocks over to the West Loop for a ton of better lunch or dinner options. read more

This has to be one of the better whiskey lists in the city. They go pretty deep on Scotch, bourbons, and ryes (though the Irish selections are a little light). Still it's a great list, with plenty of fine choices available. Be sure to catch them on Whiskey Wednesdays for half-off certain samples. Nice vibe inside too, and right next to Ogilvie. It was their grand opening and they didn't even have a Yelp page so I couldn't even check in. Art was the owner/manager on duty, and Josh was our server. Both men showed us outstanding service. I'm proud to say we popped the cherry of their Plinko look alike game. For those who never watched The Price is Right hosted by Bob Barker and now Drew Carey. Plinko is a game where contestants drop a disk from the top and they take home whatever amount the disk lands in. Big prize was 25K. The equivalent of that at Slightly Toasted is a shot of Remy Martin XO. It's $5 each play, and we ended up with syrup like shots of i don't even know what. One of them was a malort. They gave me a free tequila cocktail b/c of a wrong order. Just one did the job. I was feelin' the buzz. I went back for another work HH earlier this week. It was a packed house by 6pm. Tried a couple of their draft beers. They were ok. $6 is a good deal. They have a huge selection of whiskey/scotch/rye/bourbon. Good amount of beer and wine options. Very limited cocktails. They've got small bites and looked good but i've yet to try any. I have a strong feeling i'll be frequenting this place often. Great selections and good prices. A clear winner for HH in my book. I feel slightly jazzed to write a review of this in-office-building spot. I enjoyed my first visit this morning and certainly will go back. Had the avocado toast (sans goat cheese and egg- kept it vegan(ish)!) and loved every single morsel of it. I may have eaten the paper it was on. Also had a macchiato. A real one, not a crappy Starbucks imitation, sugar filled, garbage cub of foam filth. It was good. The low down. The prices are a premium, but you are getting things hand made while you wait for you. The drinks are made by a real human that doesn't accept your order from a mobile device. They guys behind the counter were nice. The vibe was dark, but welcoming. Equally appropriate as a break from the office as for a happy hour after work with colleagues. Will be back for more. We were really excited to try this restaurant, especially after looking over the menu!! We started with the burrata and eggplant. What we were given was eggplant with a dime size of burrata with something only slightly resembling pita. Next we ordered the avocado toast with and egg over hard. Our server explained that they didn't have the equipment to cook and egg over hard. I just want to repeat that so that it sinks in. They don't have the equipment to cook an egg over hard. Our small piece of toast was served with no egg, three thin slices of avocado and a white spread that appeared to be, at tasted like, Greek yogurt (not goat cheese as stated on the menu). The sprouts that were advertised on the toast in the menu was actually a pile of shredded lettuce. We will not be back. read more

As a fan of any kind of toasted carbohydrate, especially the kind with avocado or tartare on top, Slightly Toasted checked all the boxes for me. However, I haven't been able to visit since since they are only open on weekdays. They are located conveniently by the French Market and offer a wide variety of entrees for lunch and specializes as the name indicates, *toast*! Being a graduate student, I usually aim for coffee shops and snack places to have a bite, get a change of scenery (from the library), and to study. On the Yelp information bar, it listed Slightly Toasted as a good place to do work. It may be the case as they do have WiFi available (the Slightly Toasted WiFi wasn't working, but the bartender kindly alerted me to use the building's free wifi service instead), but I wouldn't say it's the greatest study spot as the illumination in the restaurant (it's more of a restaurant/after work bar than a snack place) is quite dim. Service is attentive and quite friendly. They don't push you to order quickly nor do they push you to leave. Despite already paying the bill the bartender kept filling my water until I left. Unfortunately, for a place that specializes in toast, the "toast" falls a little short. I ordered the Steak & Eggs Toast. I really wanted to like it. Like I really, really wanted to. For $7 I thought this place was going to blow my mind however the thing that really ruined my Steak & Eggs Toast was the sourdough toast that it laid on. It was a strange mixture of a rock hard crust and a chewy, mushy centre (not in the good way that sourdough normally is... sourdough is one of my favourite types of bread!) and made eating the toast really cumbersome since it was difficult to cut, hard to chew, and not absorbent enough for the egg yolk. The cranberry-to-tartare ratio was a little off -- the cranberries were VERY, very much present and its flavour overpowered the tartare. Ingredients list garlic aioli, but something else in the Steak & Eggs Toast I ordered was unexpectedly spicy and didn't really blend well with the other ingredients on the toast. I would recommend manually spreading the mustard across the toast evenly as eating it as it comes doesn't provide a balanced flavour profile. Lastly, the poached egg that sits on top of the toast came popped (poached eggs aren't the easiest to make so I understand... but sad times) so all the fun of poking the egg disappeared as the glorious egg yolk dribbled off the toast to waste (since it wasn't being efficiently soaked up by the sourdough bread to be enjoyed). If Slightly Toasted can change their bread, increase the amount of tartare provided, and decrease the cranberry portion the Steak & Eggs Toast would be exponentially better. Overall, I really wanted to like this place (and I was worried I was going to return here constantly), but it fell short of my expectations. For a place with toast in it's name, the bread was a little disappointing. I would probably come back for drinks with a friend opposed to my usual study/snack hunting adventures. If a friend wants to try the place, I'll come back with them as I would like to try their salad and burgers but I wouldn't go out of my way to return here again. read more

This is another one by the father-son duo Art and Tyler Mendoza of Barrel Aged Hospitality. I didn't have the toasts 'cause I was hungry for lunch. So I had the Turkey Sandwich that was slicely thick cut which came with chili oil, sprouts, avocado, lettuce, tomato and white cheddar. It comes with bacon but I don't eat pork. I definitely tasted the chili oil. The bread started to break off as I was eating it. I thought the bread was a little soft. They ran out of chips 'cause they didn't get enough for the day 'cause their housemade so they ask me for a substitute and I had the Kale and Sherry Salad that came with pecan parmesan and cranberries with their housemade Balsamic Dressing. I will come back for their toasts and whiskey's since that's a household name. They will launch Mercurio in March, more of that later on. The staff was great. I'll be back for those chips! read more

For how upscale this place looks, I thought that the food would follow suit. I was dead wrong. I'm gluten free, and they did not have gf bread. Bummer, because it seems like that was the only good thing on their menu. Instead I ordered the salad with carrots and goat cheese and added chicken. It was definitely lacking substance and still felt hungry after. It was actually gross, looking back at it. They served me maybe 2 or 3oz of dry chicken that was so unbelievably dry. I had the turkey sandwich which was very flavorful and tasty but it was not carved turkey just deli meat. The price was decent at $12 but the chips were bland and burnt. Pretty dissatisfied with homemade chips which I don't remember ever having that experience. This place is truly just a bar with some bonus quick bite snacks. If you like craft beers they have a good selection. But, if you like whiskey, they have pretty much all of the common and rare selections. I was extra impressed with the reasonable prices for the pours. Only $10 for Elmer T. Lee, where most bars don't have it and if they do, they would charge double. The only downfall is that they strictly measure the shots so you get an actual one ounce pour. This is understandable with the crazy prices these bottles fetch on the secondary market. In an area full of depressing train bars and whatever it is you call Dylan's, this bar stands out as a classy choice, with high quality drinks and tasty food. If you're looking for somewhere to go after work that isn't filled with a bunch of sad people downing well martinis before they get on a train to see their families in the suburbs, this is the place. That said, it's my experience with the staff that has me giving three stars. I always get the feeling I'm annoying the servers by wanting to order. And that's after a long wait just to find one. In my experience, this isn't a place that will make you feel particularly welcome. But, again, the drinks and food are top notch, so if you don't particularly care about the (lack of) love, I highly recommend Slightly Toasted. read more

We came here for a midday drink and toast snack and were really happy with it! We got frose which was really yummy (although not quite as sweet as I would have liked), the Nutella Butterscotch toast, and the Strawberry Ricotta Toast. Both toasts used amazing bread that was toasted to perfection. The Nutella one was great, except the whiskey butterscotch held onto the whiskey taste a little too much - it sort of felt like you were taking a shot every time you got a big bite of butterscotch. The strawberry ricotta toast was also good, although I wished the ricotta was a little sweeter. The atmosphere was strange, however. It's a very dark bar atmosphere - not exactly the type of place you expect if you're looking for a cute midday toast snack. We ended up sitting outside so it worked out. I was in Chicago for training and Slightly Toasted was pretty close to my Hotel. I came here my last night after a long walk around the city. It was about 8 pm on a Thursday and the place was pretty empty. I sat at the bar and was helped after being passed by about 3 servers. After that service was good, they engaged in conversation after checking my ID and finding I was a lonely Texas girl just looking for a break before heading to the hotel for the night. Their menu was intriguing. Lots of good options for a sandwich like toast and some really good and diverse appetizers. They also had a pretty good beer selection. I had a coffee bean IPA... We came here for a coworker's birthday lunch, and it was fantastic! We had some high top tables reserved for us and then moved them over to the end and luckily the staff didn't flip out on us for rearranging and actually helped us instead when I thought they might be upset. We were able to get a few coffee drink orders started and then got to ordering, and I split the strawberry delight and the cinnamon toast. For my meal I had the Smoked Trout Tartine. All of the food was delicious, and my only disappointment was having chips be the side and no other option. Our server was responsive and nice. The prices were reasonable and I hear they are opening another location closer to our office! I have already suggested we come here for team meetings for breakfast. read more

We walked in not really knowing what to expect since the majority of their business seems to come during the day, but were pleasantly surprised. We started with the hummus toast, which was a really nice mix of creamy, crunchy and tart. Good beer list, reasonable prices. I accidentally ordered the Apple salad wrongly, but it was delicious!
