There are regular tables and booths that have a griddle to cook your own pancakes. We arrived at opening time and were promptly seated at a table with a griddle. The waitress explained how the menu worked and gave us a few minutes to decide. The coffee was weak and bland, which took us by surprise! I asked if they made espresso and she said no. Bummer. A place like this that packs out with people should have a good French roast to start, at least one would think so. We ordered the loco moco, basic scramble with potatoes and ciabatta, DIY pancakes with lemon curd and side of Portuguese sausage. Everything came out pretty fast and hot. Unfortunately, the taste was mediocre at best, with the exception of the Portuguese sausage. The patty on the loco moco, although having grilled marks, seemed to be frozen and not fresh. Rice was good, as well as the gravy. Green onions gave it some freshness and color. The egg scramble was basic, and honestly, it's hard to mess up. The bread didn't seem to be toasted, but if it was...it was so light that one couldn't tell. The pancakes were decent, yet nothing to write home about. Lemon curd was ok, too. My hubby and I loved to go to this local resturant for breakfast annually (when we are vacationing in Maui). Like previous years, we returned to order our favorite meals. To our surprised, the menu was changed into a standard type of breakfast... The specials they previously had brought us back to annually, disappeared. What happened? During this visit, it took a long time to order & get our food. They were not busy either. Overall, the food was okay & the service was slow. There was nothing special about the food served. We stopped in for breakfast after a morning of jet skiing, and it was perfect! There was no wait at all, and we were seated right away. It's a cute experience for the kids, they do loved the idea of making their own pancakes. However, idk if Juan, our server was new or just not friendly. Our teenage son truly enjoyed this and I think it was satisfying to him knowing how delicious he could make his pancakes. If you choose to make your pancakes they have prepped batters in 8 oz squeeze bottles. You then choose what fruit, sweets, and or fillings you want. There are also signature plates like you would see on a Denny's or IHOP menu if you didn't want to put in the work of making your own pancakes. This is what I ended up doing and chose the Classic Breakfast. Nothing exceptional yet nothing terrible either. I did love their homemade strawberry jam! I've come to Slappy Cakes every year when I visit Hawaii, which makes this experience even more disappointing. For years, Slappy Cakes didn't serve specialty coffee, so before coming in we grabbed coffee across the street like we always have. We waited outside with our coffees until our table was ready. Only after we were called inside were we suddenly told we couldn't bring them in because they now sell specialty coffee. That isn't customer service--it's a great way to alienate loyal customers. If you've recently changed your menu, tell people. A simple, "We recently started serving specialty coffee, so we'd appreciate it if you purchased it here next time," would have taken 10 seconds and left everyone happy. Instead, we were forced to choose between throwing away nearly $50 worth of coffee or leaving after patiently waiting for our table to be ready. I've supported this restaurant for years, and this is how returning customers are treated? Policies are one thing, but good customer service is about using common sense. Calling us in while we're holding our coffees and then telling us to get rid of them is unnecessarily rude and completely avoidable. This wasn't about coffee--it was about how customers are treated. Unfortunately, that's what I'll remember most from this visit. EDIT: We were a party of seven with two kids. Instead of all of us ordering breakfast, we decided to just get batter for the kids and skipped coffees and meals for all of the adults out of principle. The kids still had fun, but the restaurant lost out on the additional business it would have received had we been treated like valued customers instead of coffee cattle. Forcing us to choose between keeping our coffees or feeding our children cost this establishment about $300--the amount our family of seven would normally spend on breakfast--all over three coffees. Instead, we only bought batter for the kids so they could still enjoy the experience. We spend several weeks in Maui every year and used to visit Slappy Cakes multiple times during each trip. Very much the usual collection of pancake centric breakfast options; servings were large and our server was just the right level of attentive. It is a family friendly restaurant, so gets a bit noisy in the main area. There is a quieter section near the front , if that's more your thing. Prices were fair for what we got, though like some others I was irritated by the small 'kitchen service charge'. One thing stood out to us at this restaurant and we didn't get to personally experience it but we watched others and it looked like a blast. You can make your own pancakes! They have griddles in some tables where everyone can participate in making breakfast, fun for the whole family if you ask me. We had banana pancakes, the breakfast hash, and the Slappy grand slam, all were equally satisfying, and a good bang for your buck. We came at closing time so service was a little bit slow, but everyone was still very kind and overall we had a great experience. The restaurant had just recently opened after the Lahaina fire and to our surprise there was no wait to get a table. We had a great waiter and the ambiance was pretty chill. We ordered the free Gluten squeeze bottle due to a deal my wife had. We did have 3 breakfast sides and combined with our drinks it came to about 27 bucks total for our breakfast. Everyone else ordered plates for breakfast, but my son and I did the MYO pancakes. The bottle of batter easily fed the two of us. The add-ons, which make the pancake experience fun, can add up fast. They're $3-4 each. We got chocolate chips, mac nuts, and coconut syrup. If you want pure maple syrup, it's an extra $4(!) otherwise, there's pancake syrup on the table.
